The world around us... It's not safe anymore...
Actually, it hasn't been safe for a long time...
But... At the same time, it's all I've ever known. Some people around the city have said this whole thing is a 'necessary evil', but I still can't help but wonder why.
Even though I live in the capital of my country, I can't really call myself all that wealthy or fortunate. If anything, the fear that we might be attacked one day seems more like an imminent reality than a childish nightmare.
Even still... I try my best to have a normal life. It's all that I can do. But...
Now everything's changed again. And my parents keep telling me it's my destiny. Yet I can't help but feel like this whole thing is a mistake.

//During a warring period in Japanese history, 16 young men and women who are the best of their craft are offered a safe haven. A promise that no matter how bad the outside world may get, whether it be from war or weather, that they will remain safe. However, the walls of Heaven’s Bridge Academy hide their own dark secrets and a massive castle that looked safe and inviting from the outside quickly warps itself into a nightmare for its 16 guests.//
Meeting SaneyoOh, I should probably introduce myself.
My name is Saneyo. I'm just a normal girl. And yet, here I stand. In front of my eyes I see a large castle. I've actually seen this castle quite a few times in the past. In fact, I've passed it nearly every day while running errands for my family.
But this time, I'm not just passing by. This time I'm here with a purpose. And that purpose is the scrap of paper I'm clutching tightly in my hand. Although you can't really read it while it's still in my grasp, I can assure you that all it says is...
<center>[img]
Saneyo
First Rank Chosen One</center>
You see... I was invited to this castle. This place is named Heaven's Bridge Academy. Apparently they've picked 15 young men and women across the country with exceptional talents. These chosen 15 are known as the First Ranks, as they are the absolute best at their crafts.
However... Outside of those 15, there's one more. A lottery was held, entering 10,000 young men and women without exceptional talents into a small chance at winning the final spot at Heaven's Bridge. And somehow... Out of all 10,000 participants... I was the name they drawed. Which is why I'm known as the First Rank Chosen One. Yet, that talent seems a lot more grand than I am myself.
When I first received the invitation, my first instinct was to turn it down. But my parents insisted that I had to attend. Because, you see, Heaven's Bridge Academy is more than just a school. It's a safe haven from the torn world outside.
So standing in front of this castle just feels bittersweet.
Castle GatesThe expanse of castle grounds was overwhelming… Craning my neck upwards and it seemed as if the building could reach the heavens themselves… I have never been to such a large and elaborate area in my life. The castle town below the hill was already exhausting to walk through but now my legs shake at the sight of the actual gates before me. There are some Guardhouses nearby the walkway.
In the distance I can see a figure. It appears to be a Meeting Akinari.Oh I should probably go talk to him... He's probably here to let me inside.
SANEYO: Um… Excuse me-!
AKINARI: Ah, I see. So you must be the last one to arrive, then.
Getting a closer look at him, he seemed pretty stern. His striking red hair and the katana fastened against his hip isn't really easing my anxiety, either. But... I have to do this.
SANEYO: Arrive… where exactly?
AKINARI: You were invited to come attend Heaven’s Bridge Academy, were you not? If not, I may need to have our guards escort you out.
SANEYO: Eee.. !! N-No, you’re right. Sorry, I’m just not used to… well, being so close to castles. Why, I’ve never been to one in my life!
AKINARI: Hm… That’d make sense, I suppose. I heard that there was a lottery held to decide who the last member of our class would be. So whoever was selected probably would be a commoner like yourself. Do you have your invitation with you, just so we can verify that you’re actually meant to be here?
I quickly hand over the scrap of paper I had been holding onto so tightly... Oh I just hope it didn't get all wrinkled...
SANEYO: Right here!
AKINARI: Ah, then everything checks out! It’s very nice to meet you, Saneyo. Shall I introduce you to the rest, since you’re the last one to show up? I wouldn’t want you to feel left out because everyone else has already gotten time to start making friends with others.
SANEYO: Oh, thank you very much! Um… What should I call you?
AKINARI: Right, I guess I forgot to introduce myself. You can call me Akinari. I was selected to be the First Rank Samurai.
<center>[img]
Akinari
First Rank Samurai</center>
SANEYO: Oh wow… A samurai? Well, it’s nice to meet you, Lord Akinari!
AKINARI: Eh… You don’t have to call me, Lord. I know I might be the son of the Shogun, but that doesn’t mean you need to call me Lord. Besides, I have enough people implying I only received my title due to my blood relation.
He seems a little annoyed... Ah, I hope I'm not too bothersome here...
SANEYO: Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that… Alright, let’s be friends then, Akinari!
AKINARI: It’s quite alright. Anyway, shall we get going, Miss Saneyo?
Central BaileyAfter a series of gates and bridges, it’s nice to be somewhere else. It looks like this open area can take you to several different places.

I still haven't met some people yet... I should try and find them first.
<</if>>
<</nobr>> There’s a staircase that walks up to the gates. The gates are wooden and have elaborate designs on the top. It’s extremely tall and wide, connected to walls that surround the actual grand building further in.
Castle GatesI cannot see if there is anyone in there but… there probably are, right?
Castle GatesIt looks like people upon horses are supposed to dismount here. I don’t see any horses here though.
Castle Gates
Just as I noticed two others in the hall with us, I watched the two of them collide right into each other as they were walking. One of them is a guy, and the other is a rather short looking girl.
MASAMORI: Looks like someone doesn’t know how to walk.
KIYONO: Ah… I’m sorry, I did not mean to get in your way. I was just a little preoccupied with the conversation I was having.
MASAMORI: Conversation? You’re as much a dullard with talking as you are with maneuvering it would seem.
Akinari and I listened in on their argument for a bit until finally he spoke up.
AKINARI: Ah, it seems that there’s still a few of the others lingering in the main hall. I can introduce you to these two first. Although… I should probably warn you, they’re some of the stranger ones.
SANEYO: Stranger… What do you mean by that?
AKINARI: It’s probably better if you just see it yourself.
AKINARI: Hey!! You two!!
The two cocked their heads in our direction. The girl seemed to have a curious look on her face, but the guy just looked rather annoyed.
MASAMORI: Oh… it’s you.
KIYONO: Hm… Is something wrong?
AKINARI: Come now, Masamori. Can you lighten up for once, all I want to do is introduce the last guest.
MASAMORI: Fine, but ONLY an introduction. Remember my name well, peasant. I’m Matsudaira Masamori, the First Rank Poison Tester.
<center>[img]
Masamori
First Rank Poison Tester</center>
AKINARI: Thank you.
And then he was gone... What a jerk. Even though I know he was only saying those things to get a rise out of me, I still feel a little hurt.
AKINARI: Don’t mind him, he’s just a little full of himself. But what he says is true, even at his age he is a skilled poison tester. Most in his field are usually much older, and prone to dying off from things other than just poison. I won’t ever deny his skill, but his attitude needs a little work.
It's probably best if I just don't think about it. There's still someone else here I need to introduce myself to, anyway.
SANEYO: Um… What about you? You said you were busy talking to someone, but I couldn’t see them… Is now a good time to meet you?
KIYONO: Oh… That’s right… You can’t see them, can you?
SANEYO: See who…?
KIYONO: There’s so many wandering spirits in this castle… I don’t really understand, I thought this academy was only constructed recently…
SANEYO: Uwaaah?! Spirits?!
AKINARI: Ah, right. Now I think you understand what I was talking about earlier. This is Kiyono, she has a gift that’s a little different from the rest of us. Hers is of… the supernatural variety.
KIYONO: Ah… I’m sorry, I just assumed you would already know. I’m not exactly used to people not knowing me for my spiritual abilities and nothing else. But yes, I am the First Rank Spirit Medium.
<center>[img]
Kiyono
First Rank Spirit Medium</center>
Ghosts... Spirit mediums... This is a lot to take in.
AKINARI: I’m surprised you haven’t heard about her, Saneyo. She’s gotten a lot of attention for her ability to contact the dead. I’ve heard that she’s even capable of allowing spirits to use her body as a vessel and allow us normal folk to communicate with dead as well.
SANEYO: Has she? Sorry, but if it means anything, I think I heard my younger brother talk about spirit mediums. Maybe he’s a fan of yours, Kiyono…?
KIYONO: A fan…? Ah… By the way, your name is Saneyo, is it not?
SANEYO: Yes.
AKINARI: Ah, Kiyono, you might be able to relate to Miss Saneyo a little. She’s a bit different to the rest of us, too. Rather than being selected for a particular skill, she was chosen to attend Heaven’s Bridge through a lottery. For that reason, she’s known as the First Rank Chosen One.
I don't know how I feel about him comparing us like that... But, at least he seems genuine.
KIYONO: Ah… I see… It’s nice to meet you, then, Saneyo. Perhaps we could be friends.
SANEYO: I would love to.
AKINARI: I'm glad that you two could hit it off, but we should probably get going, Miss Saneyo.
SANEYO: Ri-right!
Central Bailey
<<set $Met += 1>>There’s not much here since it’s supposed to be a great series of hallways… Aaah… More walking… More fresh air… Maybe my hope of being “somewhere else” was too much of a dream… At least the grass is nice?
Central BaileyA room that is barren in the center but houses an alcove on one side to bring variety. There is also a small lantern on the ground to illuminate the room. On the side of the room adjacent to the alcove, there is a screen door.
Central BaileyA large space with dais at the far end of the room and behind it a scroll. The floor is covered, providing a neat look to the entire room. There is little to concentrate on besides the conversation that could be happening here…
Central Bailey
A room with bookcases mostly filling up the majority of the space. There is a low desk and a big sphere thing next to it. Beside that is a collection of large maps. There’s a lantern to the side of the room by the Screen Door and, last of all, in a corner is a tea set.
Central Bailey A hallway with many sliding doors leading to the personal rooms. This area looks like it was meant for women at first but we all are lumped here anyway. We’re next to a courtyard at least.
Central Bailey The floor is covered by rush-covered straw tatami mats. Very fitting.
Reception Room It’s a sliding door made of a lattice screen covered with white paper. Some light can filter in through this.
Reception Room A small lantern sits on the floor, illuminating the otherwise dim room.
Reception Room There appears to be an assortment of rather pretty flowers. There also seems to be some scrolls, but I probably shouldn't mess with them.
Reception Room There is a clearing next to the corridor. Only one step off of our platform and we can be greeted by the sun and grass. There’s a plum tree growing here as well…! It looks like this place also serves as a training ground.
Living Quarters There are several platforms low to the ground. They're probably used for sitting on, but they look a little too fancy for me. I'd worry too much about getting it dirty or something.
Audience Hall There's a very large scroll with some sort of story written on it. There are some washed out drawings to help visually aid the story.
Audience Hall A large decorative carpet covers the floor. I can only imagine how expensive it must be.
Audience Hall There are a wide variety of books on the shelves. A lot of them seem really complicated, and I don't even think some of them are in Japanese...
Administrative Space I wonder what kind of secrets this desk might hold... Although, I really shouldn't mess with it.
Administrative Space I’ve never seen one of these items before… Is it something from the Europeans? It is rather large and can spin if I put my hand on it. Drawn on it seems to be a map of some sort, but I can’t really read it. Where are these locations…?
Administrative Space There are several maps displayed on the wall. One I can pretty clearly tell is a map of Japan. It even has all of the different clans mapped out. There's some other maps, but I don't recognize any of these locations...
Administrative Space This tea set looks so fancy... Considering where it's located, I probably shouldn't mess with it.
Administrative Space A cramped space with room enough for a futon for one patient. The rest of the place is occupied by lockable compartments, wheeled trunks, and medical cabinets, though there is a desk and lantern in here as well.
<<nobr>>
<<if $Peasants == false>>
It seems that Meeting Haruharu and Teishi are already here.
<<else>>
Nobody seems to be here right now.
<</if>>
<</nobr>>
Central Bailey There were already two people in the apothecary. A fancily dressed girl and a rather plain looking guy.
HARUHARU: This place has a lot of useful things, don’tcha think, Teishi?
TEISHI: Uh-huh… Sure, Harumaru…
HARUHARU: Um… My name’s Haru//haru//.
TEISHI: Oh? Is that so? Sorry, it must’ve slipped my mind! Teehee.
HARUHARU: Aw gee, that’s okay, Teishi. Don’tcha worry a thing! I’m sure a cute gal like you didn’t mean anything by it.
I was fixated on their conversation. I guess you could even call it eavesdropping.
AKINARI: So, this is the apothecary. If there’s ever a medical emergency, this should be the first place that you head.
SANEYO: I… I’d prefer if there wasn’t an emergency in the first place…
AKINARI: I feel the same, but it’s better to be prepare for the worst.
AKINARI: Hm. It appears as if there’s already some others in here with us. Shall I introduce you to them?
SANEYO: Um… That would be nice.
AKINARI: Hey!! Teishi! Haruharu! I’d like to introduce you to our last guest! This is Saneyo.
The two of them ended their mild bickering with each other to turn towards the two of us.
SANEYO: Um… H-hello!
TEISHI: Ohhhh is that you Akinari? All ears open for you!
HARUHARU: Um, aren’t we supposed to be talking to Saneyo though?
The girl seemed to immediately perk up once she noticed Akinari in the room... I wonder why.
HARUHARU: Well, I guess you gotta do somethin’ yerself if you really wanna have anything done. Hello and nice to meet’cha, Saneyo! M’name’s HaruHARU! I’m the First Rank Farmer!
TEISHI: I suppose Akinari wants me to tell you my name? I’m Teishi, and I am the First Rank Kimono Designer. It must be so nice to meet!
SANEYO: Um…!! It’s nice to meet the two of you! You already know my name, but I’m the First Rank Chosen One. I know it sounds a little… extravagant. But it just means that I was chosen at random from a lottery to attend.
TEISHI: You were chosen from a lottery? My, that sounds so--
HARUHARU: NEAT!! You’re like a one in a ten thousandth chance then! Heck, you might be even cooler than the rest of us combined!
TEISHI: Haaa…. Y-You think so, Harumaru? You really, reeeally do?
HARUHARU: Yeah! And um… didn’t I just tell you--? N-Nevermind…
AKINARI: Anyway, don’t mind the banter from these two, they come from two different worlds. I wouldn’t look down on Haruharu just because he’s a farmer, he’s still exceptionally talented. He was able to take his farmland from rags to riches, well, as rich as a farming town can get.
<center>[img]
Haruharu
First Rank Farmer</center>
HARUHARU: Hey… I feel like I’m being insulted here!
TEISHI: Oh silly, shouldn’t you feel proud enough to have Akinari’s praise? Count your blessings he could find that much to say.
AKINARI: As for Teishi, the same can be said for her. She came from a rather poor family, but turned everything around for herself by starting her own kimono business as a child. So perhaps all three of you could relate in a way?
<center>[img]
Teishi
First Rank Kimono Designer</center>
TEISHI: ………
HARUHARU: ………
AKINARI: Anyway, Saneyo, shall we get going?
Akinari…. doesn’t really realize what he’s saying sometimes, does he?
Central Bailey
<<set $Met += 1>><<set $Peasants = true>>It doesn't look very comfortable to lay on... Even in a fancy place like this, I guess these kind of places always have an uncomfortable feeling to them.
Apothecary They won't budge no matter how hard I pull on them... Maybe that's for the better, there must be some dangerous equipment or substances in there.
Apothecary One part of me is interested in what's in these things, but the other part of me is telling me I'm probably better off not knowing.
ApothecaryThere appears to be various vials full of foreboding liquids. Uuuh I'm not sure how I feel about this.
Apothecary There's a desk with a few papers on it. The handwriting is too messy for me to read, though. There's also a lantern, which seems to be the only thing lighting this room. It really only makes the atmosphere of a creepy place even creepier...
Apothecary At the entrance is a sign. It looks like as you go further in there’s a large pool of water in the center of the room. On the sides are some buckets. It’s kind of difficult to see in here...
<<nobr>>
<<if $TheBoys == false>>
The bathhouse already seems a little crowded. It's hard to make out, but I can see Meeting Shigetaka, Nagatoki, and Marcelis.
<<else>>
Nobody seems to be here right now.
<</if>>
<</nobr>>
Central Bailey Steam and fog obscures my vision. I think if someone were to trip and fall on the other side of the room, I wouldn’t be able to see it happen..!
Bathhouse There are quite a few buckets, but they all appear to be empty right now.
Bathhouse There is a large pool of water in the center of the room. The water looks so warm and relaxing...
Bathhouse There's a sign that indicates what hours the bathhouse is operational during. It's also separated by gender and... It looks like the next few hours are allotted for men's use only. Should I really be here, then...
Bathhouse A thick layer of steam seems to be hiding us from the three bathing in the warm water.
SHIGETAKA: Hey, pigskin! Do you even know what this place is called? Actually… Hm… Can he even understand what I’m saying… Now this is a little awkward, isn’t it?
MARCELIS: Is ‘pigskin’ a fun name Japanese people use for classmates…?
NAGATOKI: Ah, I believe he is making a vulgar comment towards the pigment of your skin, Marcelis.
MARCELIS: Do you know how to say ‘vulgar’ in Dut-- Why did I ask that? Neither of you would know. Sigh… I will learn it later.
I can't really tell what's going on, but it kind of sounds like one of them is being bullied around...
AKINARI: Hey, you three! I’d like you introduce you to the last guest to arrive. This is Saneyo, and she’ll be your new classmate.
Akinari and I step a little closer, out of the thick layer of steam.
SHIGETAKA: HEY WOMAN!!! CAN’T YOU READ!!!
A green haired boy rises from the pool of water shouting and pointing at a sign. Although it's a bit hard to read with all the steam.
SHIGETAKA: This sign pretty clearly says that now and the next few hours are allotted for men to use the bathhouse!!
SANEYO: AIYEEEEE!! Sorry!! I just walked in and-- and-- Oh dear…
I quickly bow my head down while Akinari gets the three to get out of the pool and into some robes.
AKINARI: Hey, I thought I told you guys not to use the bathhouse until we had everyone gathered in the first place?!
SHIGETAKA: Ugh, and who do you think YOU are to try and tell us what to do anyway?
NAGATOKI: Shigetaka, if I remember correctly not only is Akinari the headmaster’s son, he was also put in charge of organizing everything.
SHIGETAKA: Your point?
MARCELIS: Miss? Can I say something?
Before I can say anything, the boy approaches me. I notice that he's very clearly not Japanese. I've never actually seen a foreigner in person before...
MARCELIS: I have no idea what is happening either.
SANEYO: Hahaha…
I can't help but laugh a little nervously
At least he's honest...
AKINARI: Don't let him get to you, Marcelis. Shigetaka just likes to mess with people.
AKINARI: Saneyo, as I’m sure you can tell, Marcelis here isn’t from Japan originally. He comes from another country called the Netherlands. He comes from a powerful trade family, which is why he gained the title of First Rank Trader. Families like his are especially important for us, because they can help bring us all sorts of supplies and inventions from across the globe that we can’t get here.
<center>[img]
Marcelis
First Rank Trader</center>
MARCELIS: I feel like I was supposed to say something here…
SHIGETAKA: Hey, he did you a favor, didn’t he? He used more than ten words in Japanese in that explanation, I don’t think you’d have been able to handle it.
MARCELIS: He did me a favor? Oh, thank you, Akinari!
And I feel like he’s misunderstanding all this… Oh well.
SANEYO: And who are these other two?
NAGATOKI: Actually, I’d prefer if I got to explain my own story. I wouldn’t want someone… twisting it into something it isn’t.
AKINARI: What exactly are you implying…?
NAGATOKI: My name is Nagatoki, and while I come from a powerful samurai clan like your friend over there, I wasn’t quite lucky enough to be born into the family of the person running this academy.
AKINARI: Tch.
NAGATOKI: No, my story follows a different path. I come from an art focused family. We created masks of many different varieties, but the ones that always seemed to sell the best were our kitsune masks. People seemed to really like those masks, and now they’re all over the country. I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve even seen one yourself. Although, you don’t look nearly wealthy enough to have been able to own one yourself. But I could be wrong.
<center>[img]
Nagatoki
First Rank Mask Maker</center>
SANEYO: Oh no, you’re probably right but… if they look as nice as the mask on your head, I wish I could bring one home for my brother. I’m sorry I can’t do anything as interesting. You see, I’m the First Rank Chosen One! Um… pardon me, that sounds more exciting than it actually is… I just got chosen from a lottery...
SHIGETAKA: So… Why’d they give the completely talentless person such a cool title? Shouldn’t you be like the First Rank Completely Useless or something?
Even though I more or less have those same thoughts as well, I wish he could have worded it a little nicer...
AKINARI: Pay him no mind, Saneyo. This is Shigetaka, and he is known as the First Rank Castle Architect. Honestly, I can’t say I know too much about him myself. I tried to learn a little bit about his skill set earlier, but all he really did was try to get on my nerves. What I do know is that he excels in designing castles, although none of his designs have actually been constructed into real castles.

SHIGETAKA: Okay, one, I’m right here. Two, you realize castles aren’t built overnight, right? I’m a teenager, if one of my castles was already finished I feel like we’d be joined by a First Rank… Castle… Builder… or something. Three! I couldn’t think of anything, but you smell bad!
AKINARI: …
AKINARI: Shall we move along, Saneyo?

Central Bailey As we entered the room, I could tell Akinari was a little nervous. Even though we had only just met, I could tell it was a little strange.
SANEYO: Is something wrong, Akinari?
AKINARI: I-It’s nothing…
GOZEN: Oh, it’s you again, huh?
AKINARI: Look, I’m just here to introduce our last guest here, Saneyo.
GOZEN: Aw, why hello there, sweetie. The name’s Gozen.
SANEYO: It’s nice to meet you, Gozen!
GOZEN: Now then, normally I’d go ahead and explain my title to you, but I’d much rather watch your friend here struggle to explain it to you. After all, I want to make sure he was actually paying attention before.
AKINARI: Ugh… Whatever. She’s the First Rank Kyuudou Practitioner.

Gozen
First Rank Kyuudou Practitioner</center>
GOZEN: Y’gonna add anything more to that?
AKINARI: ...And she’s known for participating in several battles.
GOZEN: I did a lot more than just ‘participate’, but thanks for trying.
OICHI: That’s enough Gozen, you don’t need to keep rubbing it in.
GOZEN: Fine. Anyway sweetie, what’s your talent. I assume nothing too sporty if this loser can bear to be around you.
Suddenly she leapt close to me and whispered right into my ear.
GOZEN: Just between you and me, he can’t stand the thought of a girl being a better fighter than him. Hehehe.
Could that really be true...? I guess we all have our insecurities...
SANEYO: U-um… Anyway! I’m the First Rank Chosen One… It just means that I was chosen to attend this place by a random draw. It’s… really nothing special.
OICHI: I believe that it’s special.
SANEYO: Wh-what do you mean…?
OICHI: Saneyo, do you believe that everything happens for a reason?
SANEYO: U-um… Yes…?
OICHI: Then you must have been brought here for a reason.
SANEYO: What kind of reason could I have possibly been brought here for…? There’s nothing really special about me at all.
OICHI: You’ll find out eventually, I’m sure.
With that, she left the room. I didn't even get a chance to ask her for her name first, let alone anything about her. Still, I tried to shout something about her before she was gone.
SANEYO: H-hold on… I didn’t even get your name yet!!
But she was long gone... How was she able to leave that quickly?!
GOZEN: Typical Oichi. I’ve only known her for a few hours and that’s the third time she’s said something ominous like that and then left without a word.
SANEYO: Oichi…
AKINARI: She’s the First Rank Shinobi. She’s just used to keeping all the details to herself. Spies aren’t really the type to say more than what’s necessary.

I feel a little stuffy trying to eat in there, but it’s got really good food. Her family runs the restaurant and are great chefs. I think she has an older brother who used to also work there, but I haven’t seen him in a while… I wonder what happened? Nevertheless, I guess they’re still doing well-- better than ever before even!

MASAKO: Oh… I’m sorry… I didn’t realize I was supposed to say anything else.
SANEYO: It’s okay… Can you talk more about your talent? I would love to hear about it…!
MASAKO: Ah… Of course. I play the koto. It’s a stringed instrument. My whole family plays it, as well.
SANEYO: Wow, your entire family? Do you have any siblings, by chance?
MASAKO: Yes.
Well… I guess she must be even better than I thought…! Her siblings must be good at it too and gave her some competition for her talent.
SANEYO: Um, Masako? May I hear you play the koto sometime maybe?
MASAKO: Maybe...
SANEYO: M-maybe...?
MASAKO: I'm just not really in the mood at the moment.

SANEYO: Oh, well… Alright…?
There’s this awkward pause here… What should I do? Oh…!
SANEYO: Um, Yukitsuna, what kind of things do you do as a blacksmith that make you special?
YUKITSUNA: Glad you asked! You see, I’ve always dreamed of getting a super valiant, cool death on the battlefield, you know? The guy that gets to be framed in history forever! But, uh… I have a few complications that don’t really agree with me and being a samurai, so I figured, hey, why not try and change history with something else I can actually do? So I’ve worked hard to make the best weapons, and now they’re being used by ACTUAL samurai! And the good ones too. I… couldn’t be happier, you know?
...This was a strangely passionate speech for someone I just met.

I gazed around the room for a little bit. It seems like a dark haired girl and a male companion are transfixed to a particular peice.
AKINARI: And this would be the art room.
SANEYO: Oh! The art here looks so pretty.
AKINARI: That it is. It actually comes from all around the country. So you’re seeing the best that our world can possibly offer.
AKINARI: Although, it appears that we’re not the first to actually show up here. How about you go introduce yourself to these two?
SANEYO: Oh! Alright…!
The two seem pretty undisturbed, even with our presence in the room and our talking. I can't tell if they actually didn't notice us or if they're just ignoring us.
SANEYO: Um… Hello! It’s nice to meet you two. Um… My name is Saneyo and I’m the First Rank Chosen One. That just means that I was chosen to attend here through a random draw. Please don’t think of me as anything special just because of the fancy name.
The boy started laughing. It's a little corny, but if I had to describe his laugh, it'd have to 'ethereal'.

SANEYO: But, if you’re a poet, that means that you spent all day at home working on art, right? That’s still something worth recognizing. At least I think so.
NOBUYORI: Aaaah… only if my mind allows it. It’s no good to spend my time wracking my head for poetry I cannot muster. Still, better than being dragged out to battlefields to spectate, I suppose.
AKINARI: He’s written quite a few popular poems, you’ve probably read a few of them even if you don’t recognize his name, Miss Saneyo. Though, I couldn’t tell you anything about them. I found those written story things to be time wasters.
NOBUYORI: Haha, is that so? I suppose for a man who leads the life of bloodshed, there is little use in slowing down to do things like appreciate little quirks and scenes.
NOBUYORI: Poetry is a bit of an... acquired taste. Hahaaah… I doubt many enjoy my writing as art and more as history. The world works in mysterious ways beyond my comprehension…
CHIYOE: I think I have observed enough of the art around this room.
NOBUYORI: Withdrawing already?
CHIYOE: ...Perhaps.
She left the room without another word. I can't help but feel like I must have bothered her or something. But maybe she actually was just bored with the art.
NOBUYORI: ...Twenty-five. An entire hour, merely twenty-five words and she parts.
AKINARI: I’d try to tell you a bit more about her, but I could barely get anything out of her myself. According to my father she’s supposed to be one of the most promising performers of her generation… But she doesn’t really seem like a Maiko, does she?
SANEYO: Yeah… But, I guess I can understand why someone might want to separate themselves from their occupation. Maybe she just wants to be seen as something more than just a performer.
NOBUYORI: I wish you the best in luck in deciphering her. I’m afraid… I’m not the best at casual conversation to try and probe myself.
NOBUYORI: I suppose she was right… there is not much more to look at in this room. I shall take my leave as well.
Nobuyori left the room, leaving just Akinari and I.
AKINARI: We should get going, too, Miss Saneyo.

<<set $Met += 1>><<set $Hipsters = true>>AKINARI: Well, I'm glad that I was able to help you find your way around the place. But I have to go work on some final preparations. Just wait here, alright, Miss Saneyo?
SANEYO: A-alright…
It sounded like Akinari was busy and I know he shouldn’t concentrate on someone as simple as me but… I’m totally clueless on what to do without him! He told me to wait here but…
MARCELIS: …
MASAMORI: …
Being here with just these two feels rather nerve-wracking… even without having much guidance other than to stay still!
...Maybe I should try striking up a conversation?
MARCELIS: Umm… Lord Masamori and Miss Saneyo?
SANEYO: Y-Y-Yes?!
Marcelis gives a relieved sigh. He looks so much more… animated and happy than he was before.
MASAMORI: Don’t stand there with that dullard’s grin. You have something to say, spit it out.
MARCELIS: Hahaha… I am glad to remember your names.
MASAMORI: ...Is that all?
He does NOT look happy at all about this!! Save yourself, Marcelis!
...Is what I wanted to say, but my voice was stuck in my throat. Sorry, Marcelis!
MARCELIS: Hn? What do you mean?
MASAMORI: Wha--
Briefly stunned, soon enough Masamori’s face took on a wicked grin. I had thought the previous look was enough to send a shiver down my spine, but this is much, MUCH worse!
MASAMORI: ...Interesting.
MARCELIS: What is?
MASAMORI: I believe I remember you from a few months ago. You had many men with you, yes?
MARCELIS: Yes. They are my translators and they help me.
MASAMORI: Have you learned anything such as our poetry? I’m sure a smart man like you could interpret it well.
MARCELIS: Huh?
MASAMORI: 「 夢の逢ひは 苦しかりけり 覚どろきて かき探れども 手にも触れねば 」
MASAMORI: 「 いめのあひは くるしかりけり おどろきて かきさぐれども てにもふれねば 」

MASAMORI: It’s simple enough, don’t you think?

SANEYO: ANYWAY-!!!
MARCELIS: Wh-Why are you so loud?!
MASAMORI: Hmph. I suppose I shall ask you another time if the wench insists on grating my ears.
SANEYO: I’m! Still! Here!
He's really starting to get on my nerves... Especially with how he's treating Marcelis.
MASAMORI: Loud and clear, believe me.
MARCELIS: I am sorry, Miss Saneyo. Did you want to say something?
I know I was thinking of saying something earlier but… I can’t really think of anything good now. I know nothing about these two-!
...Wait. Maybe I could get to know the two of them better? But right here? Right now?
MASAMORI: Highly unlikely-- at least, not anything worth my time.
SANEYO: Then who would be worth your time? Akinari?
MASAMORI: Not by choice, I assure you.
SANEYO: What does that mean?
MASAMORI: Don’t you realize who he is? He’s the son of the shogun that owns this place. If any of us upset him, it would be so easy for him to tattle and relinquish your pretty little talent, hm? Status, gone. Just like that. Wouldn’t that be funny?
SANEYO: My talent isn’t anything spe--
MASAMORI: No, but it’s an opportunity, is it not? An opportunity to leave behind your past circumstances no matter how pathetic they are.
SANEYO: ……
MASAMORI: ...Good. Silence suits you much better. You look even tolerable to my stomach as you are now.
I wanted to say something, but I didn’t have an argument. He wasn’t wrong but… there was something off about his gaze before he started smiling again. I can’t quite place it but… I feel like he was doing more than just trying to threaten me somehow.
...I really shouldn’t read into anything that jerk says or does though.
I heave a sigh.
MARCELIS: I want you to smile, Saneyo.
MASAMORI: Didn’t that come out of nowhere…
MARCELIS: You should not look so sad. We are on a start to something big and great, yes?
Marcelis looks at me with such a kind gaze that I’m a bit flustered-- it WAS out of nowhere and we just met! But… he’s trying to cheer me up, isn’t he?
MARCELIS: ...//De toekomst is een boek met zeven sloten.//
SANEYO: Um… Marcelis?
MARCELIS: Yes?
SANEYO: I don’t know what you’re saying…
MARCELIS: ‘The future is a book with seven locks.’ I am afraid that does not make much more sense, correct?
I give him an apologetic shake of the head. He sighs, gaze downcast with a pitiful looking grin. His voice is very soft.
MARCELIS: I knew it. Figures of speech do not translate well directly…
MASAMORI: Learn Japanese better.
MARCELIS: Of course I wish to try! I just do not know much yet… but the only way I know how to cheer up people is in my own language. It is sad.
MASAMORI: Pathetic to listen to, more than anything.
SANEYO: Well, did you understand him? Can you translate…?
MASAMORI: Not at all.
He didn’t look even a bit ashamed in admitting such. He kept that pompous grin. Ugh…
I turn and see Marcelis beginning to leave. Without thinking, I grab his sleeve and stop him. At the same time, it registers to me that a bell is ringing somewhere, but none of us talk about it.
MARCELIS: Huh?
SANEYO: Sh-Shouldn’t we stay here?
MARCELIS: I was thinking if I could not help you feel better, I could try and look for Akinari…
MASAMORI: Well, if you two dullards cared to look the other way, you’ll see that it’s a waste of time. Look who finally showed up.
Akinari
Suddenly, I see Akinari walking down the hall towards me
SANEYO: Akinari…!
AKINARI: I'm sorry to keep you waiting, Miss Saneyo.
NENE: Wowowoooah, you guys are already here?! Are you guys like, ninja fast?!
I notice now that there’s a crowd of people filing in behind him-- everyone I met from before in fact…! I take a step away from Akinari and stare at them, nervously grabbing at the folds of my kimono.
NOBUYORI: Is it not more likely that they all were already here?
NENE: Baaw… That’s so BORING of an explanation though!
AKINARI: Alright everyone, I need you all to come with me to the Audience Hall.
YUKITSUNA: Say, why’d you take us out of the dining hall? Wasn’t there supposed to be a feast there?
AKINARI: There will be plenty of time for feasting later. First, I'd like you all to meet someone very special. He is my father, but more importantly he is also our headmaster.
We filed into the audience hall behind Akinari, letting him be our guide and host, but he stopped very suddenly in front of us only a step into the room. A few of us crashed into each other, but Akinari seemed to pay us no mind, his eyes only staring forward. I couldn’t see his expression but a part of me wanted to reach out to him and ask him if something was wrong.
???: Heeheeheeheeheeheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…!!
HARUHARU: Wh...What was that?!
AKINARI: ………
Nobody has any answers, or at least nobody wanted to say anything. Akinari moved away from us with a blur-like speed, abandoning us in a split second to make his way to the dais. He crouched down and shook something vigorously--
Cold TruthAKINARI: F... Father?!
???: Chin u p, A k i n a r i !
All of a sudden, a cacophony of bells jingled and a ferocious wind blew through the room. The noise rung in my ears and grew louder and louder and I shielded my ears to try and block it out. Even after it subsided, both the jingles and the wind, the sound of bells still resonated in my ear drums.
After all that commotion, a doll made of a ball, string, and white cloth magically swings through the air and moves about as if it had its own free will. It hovers over Akinari, deciding to hang in place near the ceiling.
TERUBOZU: This is only th e b e g i n n i n g !
NOBUYORI: Ah… a teru teru bozu…
TEISHI: Uuuum, shouldn’t it be hung in the door frame to ward off rainy days?
MARCELIS: It looks like a ghost…
CHIYOE: Yes… it would give that image, wouldn’t it?
AKINARI: Wh-Who the HELL are YOU? And... And... What have you done with my father?!
All the commotion beginning to brew up between our voices died down with Akinari’s cries. It sounded so anguished that it felt like a knife to my heart.
TERUBOZU: Have you been enjoying your st a y h e r e….?
TERUBOZU: How about it STAYS FOREVER LIKE THIS?
HARUHARU: Wh…?!
TERUBOZU: Sunny days, protected days, in f i n i t e d a y s…
TERUBOZU: You’re all here FOREVER-!!
TERUBOZU: I am Terubozu, your new headmaster, and you all are Heaven’s Bridge students-- or, well, yo u w e r e…
YUKITSUNA: Oi-!! What’s that supposed to mean!?
TERUBOZU: You are now the rightest, the brightest students who will stay in the confines of this castle forever and ever and EVER!!
TERUBOZU: Regular folks separated from a world of war-- isn’t that great? Super duper wonderful! Buuut… if you ever want to go back to the outside world, you can always pay a price: kill someone else here.
What…?
TERUBOZU: Execute them however you see fit! Righteous, sneakily, with honor, without honor-- anything goes! Just… don’t kill everyone in one go, OK? We need them for the fun afterwards! Buuut if you get away with just even ONE murder, you’re free to go back to the horrible outside world!
TEISHI: But um… Mr. Teru Teru Bozu… what about the rest of us…?
TERUBOZU: You die here if they get away with it!
TEISHI: …!!
Her expression grew dark… I’ve never seen it like that before…
TERUBOZU: Haven’t you heard how sometimes when you take a castle, everyone dies in it no exceptions? Men! Women! Ch i l d r e n t o o !
TERUBOZU: Heeheeheheeeeheeeeeeeeee…! Are you all caught up to speed of the t r u t h ?
TERUBOZU: I’ll leave you a gift in the morning in the central bailey, but until then: remember!
TERUBOZU: Do make tomorro w a s u n n y d a y !
With that, it spiraled until it disappeared completely-- to where, I’m not sure, but we’re all left behind with an uncomfortable silence. I bite my lip, unsure where to look until Akinari stands up again from the place where he was kneeling.
YUKITSUNA: H-Hey! Akinari, none of what that thing was saying was anything we had to listen to, right?! We just… will meet the real headmaster and have a feast and forget about all that, yeah?
AKINARI: I'll never let you get away with this. I'll find a way to end this horrific game of yours, you monster.
Without another word, Akinari strode out of the room, pushing his way through us and none of us followed him. When we looked to where he was standing and covering this entire time, we finally saw what cast that shadow over his face…
...a corpse of the Shogun slumped over with a sword pierced through his back and covered in blood.
