Your alarm goes off, it is 7 in the morning and you know you have to get up now in order to get your two kids ready and take them to the bus to get to school by 8am.
[[Go back to sleep]]
[[Get up]]Your kids come running into your room and wake you up, and because you slept in and want to get to the food pantry by 8:15 to get a good spot in line, you don't have time to eat breakfast before going to the bus stop. So you [[head to the bus stop]] with your hungry kids.
You head to the kitchen and discover that you do not have enough milk for bowls of cereal for you and both of your kids. You can either eat a bowl yourself and have your kids share, since you need energy, or you can give your breakfast up for your kids.
[[Eat a bowl yourself.]]
[[give your bowl to your kids.]]Your kids have to get to the bus to get to school by 8. You want to get to the food pantry by 8:15 to get a good spot in line, but if you walk your kids, you might get there late.
[[Walk them to the bus stop.]]
[[Your kids are old enough to walk by themselves.]]
You are a single mother of two elementary children and must provide for them while they are with you. You have a small apartment in a not-so-good side of town, and have to juggle work, custody, providing food, and transportation for your children to get to and from school. You work 4pm-1am at a gas station and your goal is to get your kids to school, get to the food pantry, pick your kids up from the bus stop after school and walk them to thier dads house so you can go to work. You also need to find time to look for a higher paying job with better hours.
Good Luck.
[[Start your first day ]] Eventhough you did take some extra time to get your kids to school safetly, thankfully the food pantry is not busy. Its already your turn to [[walk through the pantry]]You get to the bus stop late, so the kids missed their first bus and now have to [[wait for the next bus]]Your kids get on the bus, now you have to [[hurry to the pantry]]Since you slept in and then had to wait for the second school bus, you don't get to the pantry until 8:30, so now you [[wait in line]] for it to be your turn. Meanwhile you notice a lot of the good food is being taken. You've waited, and now it is your turn to [[go through the pantry]]A volunteer is with you as you come to the first station. Unfortunately, there are only a few boxes of milk left so you are only able to grab one.
The volunteer takes you to the protein station next. Which protein do you take? [[Cans of salmon]] or [[cans of chili and beans]]A volunteer greets you and begins at the first station which is milk, you get 3 boxes of milk because they just got another truck load in! Next is the protein section, you can either have [[2 summer sausages]] or [[a can of chili and beans]] You grab 2 cans of salmon and [[head to the vegetable and fruit station]]You got 2 cans of chili and beans, and you [[head to the vegetable and fruit station]]You now have a choice of [[spinach and peaches]] or [[green beans and mixed fruit]]You got the spinach and peaches, which your kids love. Now you [[move onto the breakfast section]]You got the green beans and mixed fruit. Now you [[move onto the breakfast section]]Next you have a choice of either off-brand pumpkin pop tarts or a box of plain rice krispies. Your kids hate rice krispies, but rice krispies are healthier than pop tarts.
You choose [[off-brand pumpkin pop tarts]] or a [[box of plain rice krispies]] Even though your kids dislike the rice krispies, you chose them. Next, you go to the [[lunch]] station. Your choices at the lunch station are 2 cans of vegetable soup or a box of spaghetti. You don't have any sauce to go with the spaghetti, but you think maybe you can pair it with butter and herbs if you get it.
You choose [[2 cans of vegetable soup]] or the box of [[spaghetti noodles]] Oh no! As you are grabbing the soups from the shelf, you accidentally drop one can, and it spills all over the floor. Because the food pantry has others to serve and has a low supply on soup you cannot grab another can. Embarrassed and frustrated, you quickly move on to the [[miscellaneous]] section with your one can of soup and let the volunteers clean up the mess. Even though you'll have to be inventive when cooking the pasta, you get spaghetti noodles. Now you head to the [[miscellaneous]] section. In this part of the pantry you have many different items to choose from, such as desserts, energy bars, spices, and protein shakes. Because you arrived to the pantry late, all the good items have been taken, and you are left with a family-sized [[bag of chips]], which are your kids' favorite snack, or a 6 pack of [[glazed donuts]], which are 3 days expired but probably still good, especially since you don't get donuts often. You grabbed the chips, hoping this brings a smile to your kids' faces. Last but not least you need get your [[meat]] Even though the donuts are 3 days expired you grab them anyway and hope they make your children happy. Last but not least, you head to the [[meat]] section. The food pantry allows 1 pound of meat per family member, so you are allowed to choose 3 pounds of meat and ask a volunteer what kind are available. The volunteer replies, "We just ran out of brats and chicken breast, so we only have chicken paws left." No one in your family likes chicken paws, but you need them for meals throughout the week and ask to have a whole 3 pounds of [[them]] You have finally made it through the pantry, and it is time to go catch the bus. You have 5 bags in total, and you are having trouble carrying them all.
Do you [[ask a volunteer for help]]? or try to get it [[all by yourself]]You are happy to get something different, and can't wait to try your summer sausage. Next you go over to the [[vegetable and fruit]] You grab your chili and beans and move on to the [[vegetable and fruit]] As you look at your selection, you notice fresh [[cantaloupes and corn]] and think this sounds great. You are about to grab it but remember your youngest child is alergic to cataloupes. Your other choice is [[pears and green beans]]Your youngest child can still have the corn, hopefully they aren't too upset with you. Next is the [[Breakfast]] section Both kids like pears and green beans, you are pleased with your choice, next you head to the [[Breakfast]] section Your are excited to see they have your favorite breakfast item, maple and brown sugar oatmeal. You love eating this for breakfast but both kids hate it, you either can get [[oatmeal]] and enjoy it yourself or [[cereal]] and know your kids will have something to eat. You feel guilty about getting the oatmeal but think your kids will understand, next you move to the [[lunch section]]You decided that you didn't want to upset your kids or start an argument so you just went with the cereal this time. Next you head over the [[lunch section]] Because the food pantry is not that busy the selection for lunch is still pretty good. You have your choice between either a box of [[Kraft macaroni and cheese]] or [[hamburger helper]] As you grab the the box of macaroni and cheese you also notice a a bag of rice and your volunteer with you mentions that you can have three bags of rice since they are smaller instead of one box of mac and cheese. Do you choose the [[mac and cheese]] or the [[bags of rice]] After grabbing your hamburger helper you head to the [[miscellaneous section]] of the food pantry. You still decide to go with the mac and cheese, you put it in your bag and move to the [[miscellaneous section]] You beleive this was a good choice because you know you can make 3 bags of rice last longer than mac and cheese, next is the [[miscellaneous section]] This is a section in the food pantry where you are able to choose from many different items such as desserts, energy bars, spices, or protein shakes. You have it narrowed down to a large [[cookie cake]] that is big enough to last you and your kids the week, or a couple [[protein shakes]] that you give your kids to supplement a meal. You ask for another bag because the cookie cake is so large, you can't wait to show your kids! Last but not least you are at the [[meat section]] Last but not least you are at the [[meat section]] Your choices for meat are either a [[6pk of brats]] or [[chicken breast]]
Great, you finally made it through the pantry. You have 5 plastic bags in total and they are pretty heavy, you pick all of them up and start your walk to the [[bus stop]] or [[ask a volunteer]] to help you carry them even though you will feel embarrassed. Great, you finally made it through the pantry. You have 5 plastic bags in total and they are pretty heavy, you pick all of them up and start your walk to the [[bus stop]] or [[ask a volunteer]] to help you carry them even though you will feel embarrassed. You decided to carry the bags on your own and your own and the handles rips on one of them. Unfortunately some of your goods are ruined, and you cant carry them all on the bus. You are forced to leave one of the two items. Do you [[leave the cookie cake/ protein shakes]] that your kids would really like? or do you [[leave the corn/green beans]], which they really need? The volunteer is more than willing to help you, he helps you carry them up stairs and out front where the bus stop is. You say thank you and [[wait for the bus]]
The bus comes pretty quickly. You get on the bus and head home to put away your food and get ready to go to work. [[Take a quick nap before work]] or [[watch tv]] The gentleman you asked was more than willing to help out, so you both carry the bags up the stairs so you can [[wait for the bus]] You decided that you can carry them all by yourself. While walking up the stairs, you drop one of the bags that had your milk in it. It sounded like the milk broke, but you hope it didn't.
You open the bag to luckily find that nothing is broken. You continue your way upstairs to go [[wait for the bus]] You wake up after a short nap. It was good that you got some rest because you have a long night of work ahead of you. You find that now it is time to get ready for work. After you get ready, a coworker picks you up, and you [[head to work]]
You turn the TV to watch Judge Judy. After a few episodes, you look at the clock and realize it's time to head to work. Unfortunately, you werent able to get any rest, and you know tonight will be a long night. Your co worker comes to pick you up and you [[head to work]]
Your alarm wakes you up, but your home is a little quieter than usual. You walk out to the kitchen and find your oldest child sitting at the table waiting for breakfast. You walk to your children's room and see that your youngest child is still in bed with a fever. You think that he has fallen ill with the flu.
You can either [[Take them to a clinic to see a doctor]] and hope your insurance will cover it, [[Take the morning to take care of them]] in hopes he might soon feel well enough to be left at home so you can run your errands. Or you could gamble, and [[Send them to school]]Against their protests to stay home, you get them ready and are they [[head to the school bus stop]]You bundle the youngest up and take them with. You didnt want them to stay home alone. However, about halfway there, the youngest began to feel nauseous, so you turn around and let the oldest [[walk the rest of the way by themself]]. You get your healthy child ready to go to school, and you [[walk them to the bus stop]]You feel bad so instead of making your child go hungry, you [[give your bowl to your kids.]] Now its time to leave.
[[Head out the door]]
Great, they got to the bus stop safely, but you are late and have to jog to the bus stop so you can [[get to the pantry]].Ok you saved some time by letting them walk to the bus. You hope they got there safely and on time. Now you just have to make it to the bus stop [[to get to the pantry]]Even though pop tarts aren't that healthy, you know your kids will be happy. You now move to the [[lunch]] station, where choices aren't looking too appetizing. Unfortunately, you dont have adequate insurance, so to avoid a bill you can not afford, you will have to [[Take the morning to take care of them]] or [[Send them to school]]
You got your oldest child ready for school, now you have to decide if you [[drag your sick child into the cold with you to drop your oldest off at the bus stop]] or you could [[leave the youngest at home by themself, you will only be gone shortly, after all]].You take your chances and send them to school; you can't stay home all day. So you [[feed them breakfast, and give your youngest some dayquil]]You get your youngest home just in time. You realize it is more than just a cold, and you will most likely be stuck taking care of them all day, so you [[go to the Kwik Stop convenience ]] down the street to get some flu medicine, some Gatorade, and some crackers for your sick child. You get them to the bus stop, and say goodbye. You start the short walk back home. The whole way home, you are just hoping your sick child feels good enough to be able to leave at home for a little bit so you can at least go to the Career Planning Center, where you have an appointment to go look over your resume, conduct a practice interview, and look over some better job openings.
By the time you are done worrying about all of this, [[you have made it back home]]They make it to the bus stop, and make it to school. Fortunately, the Dayquil has kicked in and you sick child is, at least, being able to function. Next, you get ready, and [[head to the door to go to the Career Resource Center]]. Unfortunately, due to your not having someone to watch your sick child, and not being able to just leave them at home, you are forced to forgo your plans for the day. Unfortunately you will not be able to go to the Career Center, go grocery shopping, or even take a nap to get rest for work.
Even though you make a tough decision that may impact your advancement to a better career, you made the best decision as a parent. Sometimes things happend that hinder you from getting to where you want to be. You'll just have to wait for another day to schedule a meeting at the Career Resource Center.
This was not the correct outcome of the game, as you did not accomplish your goals, so you must go back and retry [[Day 2]]
You get home to find that your child was able to fall back asleep. This is a good sign. Your interview is coming up soon, and you wonder if you should just [[leave now]] and hope your child will wake up and not need anything, or [[wait for your child to wake up]] to make sure they have everything they need before you leave. You want to get there really early because you know it can be busy. So you are about to leave when your child wakes up. Unfortunately, you arent the most stealthy and accidentally bumped their chair, resulting in them be awoken. They are now up and crying because their stomach hurts. You now have a tough choice, either [[leave them in this state]] or you can [[stay home]]You wait until you have to leave, and they wake up feeling better. Its a good thing you just let them sleep when you went to take the other child to the bus stop. You give them some Gatorade to sip on and you get ready to make your way to the Career Resource Center. Before you leave, you see your free cab fare token. Its your last one, do you [[take it]] to get to your interview a little early to plan? That way, you will also be able to get back to your kid sooner. Or do you [[Leave it]], afterall, it is just a mock interview. You take the ticket, and you call the number to redeem it for free taxi fare. After a short while, the cab is there, and you hop in. Its a quick ride to the Career Resource Center, you get there early and are able to practice and plan for your meeting with an advisor that will include mock interviews, and job searches. After a while, your name is called and you [[head to the advisors office]]You choose to not use the free fare coupon. Who knows, you might need it later. You put it in your pocket and you begin your walk to the Career Resource Center. You are anxious to get there so you can start planning for a better future for you and your family. When you get there, there is someone there helping people with resumes. Good thing you didn't get there too early, otherwise you would have been in your appointment before they showed up.
Do you [[take this opportunity]] to get advice for a strong resume, or do you [[decline the opportunity]]? Your resume is probably good enough. You decide, against your best parental judgement to leave them in this state. As you close the door, the cries of your sick child are too much to bare and you re-enter the house. It is clear that this day will be spent caring for them, so you [[stay home]]You choose to stay home. Even though you make a tough decision that may impact your advancement to a better career, you made the best decision as a parent. Sometimes things happend that hinder you from getting to where you want to be. You'll just have to wait for another day to schedule a meeting at the Career Resource Center.
This was not the correct outcome of the game, as you did not accomplish your goals, so you must go back and retry [[Day 2]] You start your meeting, and it is going great! There is alot of progress being made!
Unfortunately, your phone rings in the middle of the meeting, and your child is vommiting again, and needs you to be there. You used your free fare, so unfortunately you have to [[leave immediately]] in order to avoid keeping your child waiting. You make alot of progress on your resume! They really helped alot. By the time you are done, your name is called and you [[make your way to the advisors office]]You think your resume is good as-is. You take a seat, and wait for your name to be called.
After about 15 minutes of waiting, your name is called and you [[follow your advisor to their office]]You get to their office, and you begin your meeting. Your advisor notices some issues with your resume, and the first 10 minutes are spent on doing what you could have done while waiting for your appointment!
Anyway, you are now onto making some real progress when your phone rings and your child informs you they are no longer feeling better because they drank too much gatorade, and has consequentially began vommiting again. You remember you have your free fare that you didnt use, so you are able to [[stay for the rest of the interview]] Before you get to the door, you see your free fare coupon for a taxi ride. You can either [[decide to use it]] or you can [[not use it]] since you arent running too late. After about 10 minutes, your cell phone rings and you find out your child is sick. Unfortunately you used your free fare ticket, and dont have the extra cash to take another taxi, so you are forced to not only leave your Career Resource appointment early, but your child is left suffering at school for longer. Defeated, and upset with your careless decision to use your ride, you [[head to your kid's school to pick them up]].You call the number on the coupon, and you wait for your ride. Your ride arrives and takes you to the Career Resource Center. When you get there, you are checked in and you [[take a seat in the waiting room]]You think its a good idea to not use it, but you take it along anyway because you remember your child is sick, and could need a parent to come get them. So you put it in your pocket and [[make your way to the Career Resource Center]]When you get there, you are happy to find a guest there helping people with building up and correcting their resumes. You can either [[take this opportunity]] or [[decline the opportunity]]Because you were able to work on your resume before the meeting, you saved some time to do the mock interview and search for better jobs.
You complete the interview, and it went so well, the advisor gave you a number to call of someone she knows, who would be able to possibly get you an interview with the new factory that opened. Do you [[take the number]] or [[respectfully decline]]?You pick your child up from school and head to the bus stop to go home. After 30 minutes on the bus you finally get home and make sure child is comfortable.
Eventhough you make a tough decision, you made the best decision as a parent. Sometimes things happen that hinder you from getting to where you want to be, or simply just make life harder. You got a little progress toward a new job, but now you must be there for your child.
Go back and retry [[Day 2]] You are forced to leave immediately and go back home to be with your sick child. You were able to get something out of the meeting however, and hope this leads to a possible new job. For now, thought, your concerns are toward your child.
Eventhough you make a tough decision, you made the best decision as a parent. Sometimes things happen that hinder you from getting to where you want to be, or simply just make life harder. You got a little progress toward a new job, but now you must be there for your child.
This was not the correct outcome of the game, as you did not accomplish your goals, so you must go back and retry [[Day 2]] You stay for the rest of the interview, and recieve a list of places to call for interviews. You immediately call for a taxi so you can get to your sick child.
You [[comfort them and get them all cleaned up]] as well as another dayquil in hopes of making them feel betterAlthough the job isn't much better than they one you currently have, it is better hours, and better paying. This could even free up enough time to possibly take some classes at the local Community College, in the future, to become a nurse like you have always wanted. You [[thank her for all of her help]] and leave the office. This is a great opportunity, but you dont feel like you could possibly be hired. The advisor explains to you that this could mean a better job and better future for you and your family, and that they believe you have what it takes. She has swayed you, and you decide to [[take the number]]As you are walking out, your sick child calls your cellphone and explains that they dont feel well again due to drinking all of the gatorade way too quickly. You are done at the Career Resource Center and remember you didn't use your coupon for your free ride, you call the number and get a quick ride home to [[tend to your sick child.]] You get home and check on your child and make sure they are okay. You then get out the number you were given and give them a call, after a quick 1o minute conversation you are asked if you can start next week! Without even thinking about it you say yes and relaize you have just acquired a new job!
Throughout these two days you were able to get to the pantry, take care of your children, get to the Career Resource Center, and get a new job! Congratulations you have completed the game!
[[A Few Days in the Life ]] Eventhough you make a tough decision, you made the best decision as a parent. Sometimes things happen that hinder you from getting to where you want to be, or simply just make life harder. You got a little progress toward a new job, but now you must be there for your child.
This was not the correct outcome of the game, as you did not accomplish your goals, so you must go back and retry [[Day 2]] You make it to the bus stop, and ride the bus to the pantry. You get there early, having let your kids walk by themselves, so there is no wait. Next you [[walk through the pantry]]Your shift is long and hard. You cant wait for your appointment at the Career Resource Center that you have tomorrow. You hope you will be able to make a mock interview and go over job openings with your advisor.
Your shift ends, and your coworker gives you a ride to your children's father's house to [[pick them up]] so you can take them to school the next morning. You unfortunately have to leave whichever you took from the misc. section: cookie cake/protein shakes. The kids would have been so happy with either of those, except they do really need the healthy veggies. Now that you have everything else, you begin to [[wait for the bus]]You have to unfortunatelly leave the item you chose at the vegetable station: corn or green beans. You hope your kids will like the cookie cake that you decided to save for them. Now you [[wait for the bus]]Although they are unhappy to be awoken in the middle of the night, they are getting used to it. Your youngest isnt feeling well, but you hope they are just tired. Unfortunately, you cant just leave them at their fathers because he has no way of getting them to school. You feel bad, but you know it must be done. Your coworker gives you all a ride home, and you tuck them into bed and get some much need rest. [[Day 2]]
