Hey there, and welcome to the USA! You and your family just fled from Myanmar. Being Rohingyan, the Burmese government refused to give you citizenship despite your people having lived in Myanmar for over 800 years. They demanded you return to Bangladesh, a country you have never lived in. If not, they will round your family up in a camp surrounded by land mines, or just straight up line you up and shoot you. Your family escaped the tyrannical Burmese government and were granted refugee status in America. That was difficult, but so is adapting to western culture. Do you want to play as: [[Yanadar]] a 33 year old Burmese-Muslim woman. Responsible for cooking, shopping, and caring for her 10 daughter Shimaya. You chose Myitzu the eldest of 3 children. Myitzu is a very happy, energtic, and intelligent girl who strives to learn. Now that you're in the US, you want to learn English in order to meet new friends. You chose Yanadar, mother of 1. Yanadar is very unique and brave, because at 23 she escaped Mynmar and fled to Malaysia where she met her husband Ahmad and had child. As much as you would like to take English lessons, its not possible. Although the refugee center provides them for free, you don't know how to take the busses downtown and have no access to a babysitter. The refugee center provided you with a smartphone upon your arrival to America. With it, you are able to access English learning resources. This is the best way to learn for now, so that you can stay at home with the kids and not have to worry about how to use a bus to get downtown for lessons. Once you got home you see that your mom made something new, called a "cake". Its very good and you keep going back for seconds. Your mom has been learning English on her own while you and your brother and sister have been at school. She teaches you and your brother and sister some English. You and Shimaya love the outdoors, the park was a success! While you were at the park you meet another woman named Amanda that is waitng on her son to get done playing. You two get to talking about your kids and become good friends. Amanda invites you to go out to eat with her and her kids she's willing to pay, but it's almost time for your husband to come home from work you have to cook dinner for the family. You approach the group of kids and try and get on a swing. They all give you a funny look. To ease the tension, you give out a little smile. They are receptive to this, and summon you to join them. The pain is excrutiating, and your friends can tell something is up. They're only a little older, but are not underprivileged and one of them has a phone. He calls 911 for you. [[Go to the hospital]] [[Back to start->Welcome to America]]

You're forced into an ambulance, but thankfully the English lessons you are taking has prepared you for the concept of emergency medical vehicles. However, you are still terrified. You have not been properly prompted on what a broken leg entails, and you're in a lot of pain. The kind EMT's try talking with you to calm you down. Good choice! Although you're too scared and stressed to remember your phone number or address, they can contact your mother using your name. The pizza is frozen! You can't eat frozen food, in order for this to be edible you're going to need to use a stove, but you don't know what a oven is or how to operate it. You have really nice a neighbor she has agreed to show and teach you how to work a stove. During this process she showed you how to turn a stove on and off, how to set the heat temperature,and set the timer. However she moved too fast and you don't know how she set the timer to 20 minutes. Your husband and kids love the cheese pizza you made, they all were so shocked to see a dish like that, they asked questions such as "what is this?", "how did you make it?". And said statements such as "this is so good!" "I love it". Its time for Shimaya to start on her homework and your husband is too tired from work and doesnt understand English enough to help the kid. Helping Shimaya with her math homework was a struggle but with the help of a useful math resource called "Khan Academy" both of you managed to finish. You don't like the feeling of struggling, and you want to learn more advance english and math to help Shamimah do better in the future. You will have some time to go to the Refugee Center downtown in the morning to take Math & English classes while Shamaya is at school and your husband is at work. Your search for looking Milwaukee Bus was a success, you have arrived at the local grocery store. Seeing all this food in one place is not normal for you but it reminds you of streets in Burma, where everyone sold fruits and vegetables. You have a list of foods that you want to buy such as fish, chicken, eggs, pizza, noodles, bread, juice, milk, cookies etc. The refugee center has not provided you with food stamps yet, and you only have 50 dollars to spend and so choise wisely! Great, you were able to find your way to the refugee center. You learned enough math such as multiplying, divison, and fractions and english to help Shimaya with her homework and to communicate with other people in Milwaukee. If you ever feel like you need to learn more, just go back to the refugee center while Shimaya is at school and when your husband is at work. The refugee center has you on hold and a hour has passed. Its best to go the refugee center in person for services that include tutoring in basic subjects such as English, Math, and Reading. [[Back to start->Welcome to America]]

Showing the list really gave the employee a better understanding of how to help, you manange to find all of the things that you need. You see people standing in lines and paying for their food at the front of the store. [[Get in line to pay for your food]]

American prices are higher than the the prices in Malaysia. Your total came out to be 60 dollars you only have 50 dollars to spend. What do you do? Oh no!! The manager at the grocery store has called the police on you for stealing!! This was not a good idea but you were so desperate to make a meal for your family you truly believed this was the right choice. Now the police have you in custody, and you have to wait until Ahmad is off work so he can talk to the police. Shimaya is on her way home from school soon. You have pre-made cookies and milk ready for Shimaya when she gets home from for school. She tells you that she has learned some new Engish words and wants to share them with you. [[Sit down with your kid]] [[Back to start->Welcome to America]]

Your mom shows up to the hospital in a panic and is directed to your room. She clutches you and you ask what is going to happen to you. She tells you what a broken leg is, but since medical treatment is not the same in Burma she doesn't know exactly what they'll do here. You ask the doctor what happens next, and he's a really nice man. He tries using body language to mime how he is going to cast your leg, but he realizes its not being communicated well. Do you: [[Pretend to understand]] [[Wait for the translator]] [[Back to start->Welcome to America]]

Because Burmese is sort of an uncommon language, the hospital doesn't have a Burmese man on retainer just waiting in the lobby. So instead, a nurse comes in with a phone connected to a translating service. She quickly explains how they cast the leg. [[Relax]] [[Panic]] [[Back to start->Welcome to America]]

You and your mother are nice and calm now that you know whats going on. She holds your hand as they put your cast in place. You are sent home with a cute pink cast. It has been a long day. [[Go see your family]] [[Back to start->Welcome to America]]

You understand the prodecure but you're afraid of it hurting and you panic a little bit. In your panic, you try to get up, and accidentally put pressure on your leg. The pain makes you feel woozy, and you pass out. When you wake up, you have a cute pink cast on your leg. Your mom and you are exhausted, and its time to go home. You nod your head instinctually when the doctor is talking. He gets started casting your leg but as soon as he touches it you go into panic mode. You move your leg, and the sensation is painful and foreign enough to make you dizzy and pass out. [[Back to start->Welcome to America]]

Your little siblings greet you at the door with kisses and drawings they made for you. Your father gives you a big hug and carries you to the couch. Your husband does not know English that well, so he's having a hard time communicating with the police. However the police have shown the video of you stealing the bags of food to Ahmad, so he knows that you can not come home unless he pays 1,000 to bail you out. Sadly, Ahmad does not have the money. You spend 5 months in jail for the crime you have done, your english skills have declined, and Ahmad had to quit his job in order to watch Shimaya, they both are currently homeless. Wonderful!!! You were able to teach Shimaya and Ahmad all of the math and english that you were taught at the Refugee Center. Now all 3 of you will be able to go out in the city of Milwaukee to communicate with everyone. Looks like you guys have learned to adapt to American Culture perfectly. You take up your crutches and hobble over to the group on the swings. As soon as you get close enough, you drop a crutch and slap the girl across the face. She drops to the ground, and a teacher notices the commotion and comes running. As it turns out, the hand motion means something completely different in America. In Burma, it means someone is looking to fight you. In America, it means they just wanted you to come over and play with them. You can't explain yourself. You are suspended from school for two weeks and your parents are extremely disappointed. For the rest of the year, you are unable to make friends, because the other children think you're dangerous. You hobble down on your crutches to the swingset, determined to mediate the situation. As you approach, they are smiling at you. As it turns out, the hand motion just means "come here" in American culture, whereas in Burma they would have been summoning you for a fight. One of the girls apologizes for what happened to your leg. She pulls a pack of colorful markers out of her backpack and asks to sign your cast. She chooses pink, and you say "That's my favorite color". She says "Me too!" All the rest of her friends start signing your cast. Congratulations on your success, Myitzu!
