Why Don't You Just...

Welcome players to Caleb's Test. In this game you'll be playing the role of Caleb, a 14-year-old, African American boy who struggles with balancing school and taking care of his impoverished family. Throughout his last week of 8th grade, he's faced with decisions that predicts his future success in life. Will you help him stay in the cycle of poverty or will you lead him to the road of success. Caleb wakes up to his mom's movement downstairs, who just got back from her third shift part-time job. He turns to his clock and see that it's 7 am. He gets up and wakes his siblings in which he share a room with. All three of them get dressed and head into the kitchen. Caleb decides to... As he heads to the cabinets and opens them, he realizes they have no food. "Mom, did we ever get our food stamps?" he yelled to his mom, who was about to leave for her second job. "We got the letter with the card but there wasn't any money put on it yet. The money won't get on the card till tomorrow." she yelled back and left the house. He closes the cabinets and finds his school supplies. [[gather your supplies]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Caleb realizes that they don't have food in their house anyways. He then sees and grabs the food card without reading his mom's note that was next to it. His stomach starts to growl but he dismisses it because this always happens. He gathers his school supplies and his siblings' and head to the bus stop. Standing at the bus stop, he sees his middle sibling coughing violently and he shrugs it off. He didn't think much of it but then again his sibling has been sick for a few weeks now. "I'll get soup and some cough syrup when I go to the store," he whispered to himself. The bus arrives and they get on. [[go to school]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

They arrive at school and Caleb helps his siblings to their classes. He makes it to his class attendence. Later in the class peroid, his teacher annouces that their final test of the school year is Wednesday. Caleb is right on the border of passing or failing 8th grade. "There will be a review day tomorrow for Wednesday's test," says the teacher. The rest of the school day was him worrying about his sick sibling and passing 8th grade. At the bus stop, Caleb decides to either go to the store to buy food and supplies for their house or go home and finish his homework and help his siblings with their homework. [[go to the store]] [[go home and help with your siblings' homework]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Caleb and his siblings take the bus to their local Convience Store. He sees that there isn't a lot food in there but the next grocery store is 45 mins away and didn't have time to go there and get home on time to get his chores done. He picks out some eggs, bread, and milk. He also grabs soup and cough syrup for his sick sibling. As he proceeds to the check out line his youngest sibling asks him if he can get a candy bar. His sibling is happy stays quite for the rest of the evening. They all head to the check out line. [[head to the check out line]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

His sibling starts to have a fit and cry over the candy bar and Caleb tries to ingore it but his tautrum gets louder and louder. He grabs his youngest sibling by the arm and head to the check out line. [[head to the check out line]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

At the check out line the cashier begins to ring up the groceries. The cashier tells them what the total was and Caleb gave the cashier his food stamp card. The cashier swiped the card but said that it had a zero balance on it. "How is that possible? We just got it today..." he said and realized the note that was left on the table this morning. He... [[negotiates on getting the groceries for free]] [[leaves the groceries and head home]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Bus stops in front of Caleb's street and him and his siblings walk home. At home, He starts to do his chores which consist of cleaning the dishes and doing the laundry. His siblings begin to do their homework and Caleb, to hungry to do his homework or help his siblings, watches Tv. His mother came home at 6 pm and brought home dinner. Caleb leaves the couch to eat. At the table his mother asked Caleb to do something for her. "Caleb, sweetie, is there anyway you can stay home tomorrow and run some errands for me please?" "Mom, I have a review day tomorrow for my test and if I don't go I will fail 8th grade." Caleb said. "Please Caleb I won't have any time this week to do them." By knowing that he won't have food till tomorrow, he'll have more time to help his siblings with their homework and get his own homework done and his chores. He gathers his school supplies and his siblings' and head to the bus stop. [[head to the bus stop]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"Please sir, is there any way I can get the groceries for free? At least let me have the cough syrup or soup for my sick brother. I'll do anything, please." Caleb pleaded to the cashier. "Sorry kid, if you don't have the money then you don't get the groceries. Store policy." the cashier stated. Caleb... [[continues to plea for the groceries]] [[leave and head home]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Emarrassed and frustrated, he and his siblings take the bus home. [[take the bus home]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"Sir please, there has to be something that I can do to get these groceries." Caleb affirmed. "Kid, like I said before, if you don't have the money you can't have the groceries. Now leave there are other customers that need to be checked out." Caleb stares at the cashier plotting to steal something but removes the thought and collect his siblings and leaves. Right before he leaves the cashier yells at him. Caleb... [[turns arounds to hear what the cashier has to say]] [[ignores the cashier and heads home]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Tired of what the cashier has to say, Caleb and his siblings leave emptied handed and go to the bus stop to go home. [[take the bus home]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

The cashier yells to Caleb saying that there is a job position open at the store and that way he has money to pay for the groceries and also have a discount on them. "Thank you sir." Annoyed that he can't get the groceries, Caleb left the store with his siblings and goes to the bus stop. [[take the bus home]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

The bus stops in front of his street and he and his siblings walk home. When they arrive home it was 5 o'clock at night. Caleb didn't have time to do his chores so he and his siblings start their homework. Around 6:30 pm his mom arrived home from work. She brought home dinner and everyone sat at the table. Caleb told his mom about the incident at the grocery store and his mom replied by saying he needs to read her notes then he would've known that there would be money on the card tomorrow. Later His mom asked him if he could stay home tomorrow from school. "Caleb sweetie, is there anyway you can stay home tomorrow from school and run some errands for me." his mother asked. "Mom I have a review day tomorrow for my final test." Caleb replied. "I know this test means a lot for you but these errands need to be done sooner rather than later." Caleb decides to... "Fine, I'll stay home tomorrow. It gives me time to go to the grocery store." Caleb sighed. "Thank you so much and I'm sorry that we live like this but we need to make sacrifices some time." his mom said rubbing his shoulder. He finishes his diner and goes to bed. "I'm sorry mom but I need to go to school tomorrow so I have a fighting chance to pass my test." Caleb said. "I understand but I need you to stay home tomorrow." his mom insisted. His mother yelled at Caleb and told him he has no choice and is staying home tomorrow. Upset, Caleb starting eating his food. [[stay home tomorrow and do his mom's errands]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

In his room he contemplates on doing his mom's orders to run her errands or say that he is going to run her errands but actually go to school to make it to his test review. He chooses to [[listen to his mom's orders]] [[lie to his mom]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

The next morning, Caleb got his siblings ready for school and went downstairs to receive the errand list from his mom. "Your top priority today is going to the store and buying food. There is now money on the card so you should be fine to get groceries." his mom stated. "Will do mom." Caleb said hugging her goodbye before she heads to work. After she leaves, Caleb's sick brother, still coughing violently asked Caleb to stay home from school and go with him to run errands. "Please Caleb, I'm really sick and can't make it through the day. Let me stay here please." "Buddy... [[yes you can come with me"]] [[no, you have to go to school because I can't watch you]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Caleb decides to lie to his mom and goes to bed. In the morning his mother hands him her errand list before leaving for work. Caleb smiled and took the list. When she left, he placed the list on the counter and gathered his school supplies and got his siblings ready for the bus. His sick brother still, coughing and weezing, was slugglessly falling behind them as they headed for the bus. "Caleb, is there any way I can stay home, please?" weezed his sick brother. "Sorry bro, there's no one home to watch over you." Caleb said putting his arm around his sick brother. They got to the bus and headed to school. [[at school]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

At school, Caleb makes it to his review day but things get a little dicey with the review. His teacher wants to play a fun review game but Caleb wanted to talk to his friends and goof off with them. "CALEB, if I were you I would pay very close attention to this review. You never know, this might bump your grade up. [[listen to the teacher]] [[continue to goof off]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Caleb's younger brother looks at them asking if he too can stay home. Caleb thinking about how much in trouble he will get in decides to... [[allow his younger brother to come with him]] [[doesn't allow him to come with them]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Coughing harder, his brother listened to him and took their youngest brother to school. Now that his brothers were gone, Caleb started his mother's list. The first stop of three was to go the store. [[head to store]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Now happy, his younger brother throws his backpack across the room and ask what's the first thing on the list. He also promises to not tell mom that he allowed him to stay home from school. Caleb says the store and he gets the food stamps and they leave the house to go the bus stop for the Corner store. [[go to the corner store]]

As you arrive at the Corner store, the cashier says, "Hey kid, aren't you the kid that ask for free groceries yesterday?" Caleb, giving the cashier a look, says... [[ "Sorry sir, I but I think you confused me for someone else." ]] [[sighs, "Yes that was me, but this time I have money." ]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"Sorry kid, I thought you were someone else." apologized the Cashier. Caleb and his siblings walk around the store collecting the supplies his mother had written for him. Once they got everything on their list, his sick brother started coughing and made Caleb realize he almost forgot the soup and cough syrup for him. "Ahh I thought that was you." laughed the Cashier. "Came back to negotiate so more did yea?" "No I did not and for your information I have money this time." Caleb glared. He went throughtout the store collecting the items his mother said to get. His younger brother threatened him to get him a candy bar or he'll tell their mom. Caleb decides to... Waiting for his turn to check out, Caleb saw a "Help Wanted" sign and started to think about taking it to bring in some extra cash and lower the work load his mom has to endure. Finally, it was his time to check out. The cashier rung up his groceries and said what he had to owe. Caleb handed him the food stamp card. The Cashier swiped the card and said that food stamps don't cover the cough syrup. Confused Caleb... [[Puts back the cough syrup and pays for the rest of his groceries]] [[He ask how much the cough syrup was]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

He left the store without the one thing he needed. After the store he read what's next on the list and head for the next stop. [[go to next stop]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"This cough syrup isn't covered by food stamps but I can get you one that is." said the Cashier. "Thank you sir that would be great." The Cashier went in the back and got the cough syrup. It wasn't the best cough syrup but it was something to help his sick brother. He gathered his groceries and left to go to the next stop on the list. [[go to next stop]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

At the store, the Cashier gives him a look as if he knew him. He asks, "Hey kid, weren't you here yesterday?" Caleb answers... [["No"]] [["Yes"]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Pouting, his youngest brother throws a tantrum, threating to tell mom that he allowed their sick sibling to stay home from school. Caleb now... [[keeps his word and not let him come]] [[allow his younger brother to come with him]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"Oh sorry you look like this kid that was in here yesterday." Said the Cashier. Caleb nodded at him and went to pick up the items that were on his mother's list. Once he got all the items he went to check out line. [[at the check out line]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"I thought you looked familiar. Do you have money this time or are you gonna negotiate again." laughed the Cashier. "Yes I have money. I won't be here if I didn't again." Caleb said grinding his teeth. He walked through the store and gathered the items his mother said to get. Once he got those items he went to the check out line. At the check out line, Caleb places the items on the counter and sees a "help wanted" sign on the store window. "What positions are you guys hiring." asked Caleb. "We are looking for cashiers and stackers, why you insterested?" questioned the Cashier. Shaking his head yes, the cahsier gave him an application and to think out it and ask his parents about the job. Caleb hands the Cashier his food stamps to pay for his groceries. Before leaving he thanks the Cashier for the application and leaves. [[head to next stop]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Annoyed with the Cashier, he kept his head down until he was told to pay for the groceries. "Well lookie here, you paid for your groceries witout getting them for free. Caleb... [[Takes his grocieres and leaves]] [[looks at the Cashier and gives him a piece of his mind]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

The next two places were close on unexpected notice, so Caleb headed home. They headed went home, unloaded the groceries and waited until 3 o'clock to go pick up his brothers. Caleb went to his room and studied for a bit. At 3:30, Caleb and his brothers all arrive home. Caleb helped them start on their homework and studied more. Around 5:00, their mother arrived home and asked about their days. As she was starting dinner, Caleb went to... [[go study]] [[do some chores]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Once again embarrassed he leaves the store upset with the Cashier and heads to the next stop. [[head to next stop]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"For your information sir, I made a mistake yesterday and really hope you drop it or else." Caleb declared. "Yea what are you gonna do kid?" the Cashier teased. Annoyed Caleb grabbed his groceries and marched out the door ripping off the help wanted sign. Upset, he headed to his next stop. [[head to next stop]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Caleb takes his hystical brother to the bus stop and waits with him until it arrives to pick him up. After the bus picks him up, he and his sick sibling go to the store. [[head to the store]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

At the Corner store, his sick brother notices a "help wanted" sign and told Caleb maybe he should apply here. Once inside the Cashier asked, "Hey kid, weren't you here yesterday asking for the free groceries?" Caleb looked at him and said... [["Wrong person? I wasn't here yesterday"]] [["Yes that was me"]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"Oh my bad, yesterday a kid came in here and ask if he could get his groceries for free." The Cashier stated. "Well I bet he didn't get them did he." Caleb shrugged and collected the items his mother left him. When they got all the supplies his brother reminded him to get soup and cough syrup. They wne back to get soup and cough syrup, the one that food stamps covered and headed to the checkout line. Upon the checkout line, he decides to buy a candy or not so his little brother wouldn't tell his mom on him. [[buys candy bar]] [[doesn't buy candy bar]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"I thought I recongized you. Come back here to negotiate some more." The Cashier laughed. "No I'm not, but this time I have money." Caleb glared at him. "That's wonderful news, now you can pay for your groceries without complaining." The Cashier stated. Angry, Caleb ingored his brother's coughing and went throughtout the store to gather the things that were on his mother's list and head to the checkout line. [[at the line]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"Maybe this will make our brother happy and not tell mom about you staying home from school." Caleb said to his sick brother. Coughing his brother said, "Haha yea. Wait we still need the cough syrup and soup remember." His brother said. "Oh right, I almost forgot." Caleb remembered. He walked back through the store to get soup and cough syrup. He looked at the cough syrup and grabbed the expensive one but saw that food stamps doesn't covered it and got the store brand one instead. Once they got that, they went back to the checkout line. In line, Caleb saw the "help wanted" and asked what positions were they looking for. "We are looking for cashiers and stakers," said the Cashier. Caleb nodded and paid for his groceries and left with the thought of possibly working here for money. He looked at his list and saw what was next. [[head to the next stop]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"He'll get over it, he always does." Caleb rensured himself. His sick brother begins to cough and made Caleb remember he needed the cough syrup and the soup. He went through the store and and got the soup and the cough syrup that food stamps would allow and proceed to the checkout line. In line the Cashier told him about a job opportunity as the store if he was interest in appling. Caleb is... [[interested in the job]] [[not interested in the job]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

The next stops were closed on unexpected reasons, so Caleb and his brothers went home and waited for their mom to come home. During that time, Caleb unpacked the groceries and did some of his chores. At 5 o'clock his mom came home from work. She started to make mac and cheese for dinner and ask Caleb about his day. His little brother nudged into the conversation and remembered his promise with Caleb and lied to his mom about how much fun he had at school. Caleb gave a sigh of relief and told her what happened with the other two stops on the list. "Well you could've gone to other places that a bit far away you know." His mom stated. "Yea but I didn't know where there are." Caleb said. When dinner was ready, everyone sat around the table and starting eating. His sick brother began coughing and Caleb... "You need to stop threatening me with telling mom bro." Caleb said grabbing the candy bar. "Besides didn't you get one yesterday?" "No I didn't get one yesterday because we couldn't pay for the groceries, remember." his little brother said. Now heading to the check out line the Cashier gave Caleb a grin and ringed up his groceries once again. "Hey kid, if you want to make extra cash, we still have a job position open if you want it." The Cashier said. "I'll have to talk to my mom about it but I would like that." Caleb grinned. The Cashier told him his total and Caleb gave him his food stamps. After that, he left the store but he left that he was forgetting something but couldn't think of it. He looked at his list and saw where he had to go next. [[next stop]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"I'm sooooo gonna tell mom on you." His brother insisted. "Even though you promised me you won't. If you won't tell mom, I won't tell her that it was you that flushed her earrings down the toliet." Caleb smirked. "Ahh fine you win. They headed to the checkout line and the Cashier told him about the job position that was open. Caleb nodded but didn't want to take it because he didn't want to work with the guy after all he did to him by embarrassing him. Caleb paid for the groceries and head to his next stop. Caleb smiled and finished paying for his groceries. As he headed out the store doors, he turned around and thanked the Cashier and headed to his next stop on the list. "I'm sorry, but I have to much on my plate already but maybe next." Caleb apologized. "That's ok," the Cashier said taking Caleb's food stamp card and finished the transaction. Caleb said his goodbyes and headed to his next stop. [[head to the next stop]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"So your back, do you want to hear what I have to say about the job position that we have here." The Cashier asked [[no and pay for your groceries]] [[yes and pay for your groceries]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"Why don't you want to hear about the job." The Cashier questioned. "Because this will be the last place I would want to work. After all the things you did to me, I will never work here." Caleb declared. "Wow ok I guess." The Cashier rung up the groceries and gave back the food stamp card. Caleb took his sick sibling by the arm and marched out of the store. "SHOOT, I forgot the cough syrup. Sorry bro, next time we can get some ok." Caleb suggested. "But can't we just go back in there, and what happens I don't make it to next time?" his brother weakishly said. "Don't think like that, you'll be fine. They both headed to the next stop. "Well we are looking for people to be cashiers or stakers if that sounds like you can do that?" Asked the Cashier. "Yea I'm totally in for that do you have an application." Caleb asked. The Cashier nodded and handed him one and finished ringing up his groceries. Caleb collected his groceries and left the store thanking the Cashier. Headin to the next stop Caleb realizes he forgot the cough syrup and forgives his brother that he forgot about it. [[the next stop]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

The next two stops were closed unexpectedly, so Caleb and his sick sibling went home and waited until 3 o'clock to pick up their little brother. During that time, Caleb went and did some of his chores and studied a little bit for his test. After 3 o'clock, he and his siblings all arrive home. Caleb sat at the table and helped his siblings with his brothers' homework and studied for his test. At around 5 o'clokc, their mother came home and started making dinner. Caleb told her about the other two stops and how they weren't open. At around 9 o'clock, Caleb fell asleep and slept until the next morning. [[tomorrow morning]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Caleb's friends tried to get him to goof off again, but he realized he did need this review or he shouldn't have come to school then. He learned about different ways to solve the equations and scored the highest for his team in history trivia. His friends ask to go to the bathroom which their teacher granted them and told Caleb to do the same thing. Caleb... "CALEB, this is your last warning, if you can't handle it you will be sent to the principal office." his teacher sternly stated. "Yea yea whatever boss." Caleb snickered. Caleb and his friends paid attention a little bit learning different ways to solve equations but his friends started to goof off and Caleb decides to.... "Can I go to the bathroom please." Caleb asked. "I don't know can you. Yes you can go." Joked the teacher. Annoyed, Caleb left the class and went to the bathroom. In the bathroom, his friends were smoking and asked Caleb to join them. Thinking of how much trouble he'll get in, he chooses... Caleb learned a lot in his review day and was thankful he decided to go to school. His friends tried to get him to got to the bathroom but he ingored them. Later in the day he found out his friends were expelled because they were smoking in the bathroom. Caleb thought about how much he dodged a bullet. At the end of the school day, he found out his mom had picked up his sick sibling from school and realized the potential flaw to lying to his mom. He thought he could... Caleb continues to goof off which made the teacher go off on them. "If you think this all fun and games and don't think studying before the test is beneficial, than you guys don't need to take the test and can fail and retake 8th grade or just drop out. You three will be getting a phone call to your parents by the end of the day explaining what happened here today. For the time being, since you can't settle down, you can go and sit in the office until I come and get you." The teacher explained. The boys got up and went to the office. After the teacher's warning, Caleb listened and ingored his frineds. His friends tried to get him to goof off with them but he focused on his work. The told off his friends and told them to go to the office if they think that they don't need this study time and will receive a phone call to their parents aout their behavior in class today. Caleb thought about if he would've been caught that his mother would know he lied to her and would be in even more trouble. At the end of the school, he gathers his siblings and notices that he has some extra time to go to the store and get some supplies. So Caleb decideds to... Realizing how much trouble he'll get in and the potential phone call to his mothe would get him even more trouble for lying to mom and going to school. "Come on man, what's wrong with you? His friends said pushing him into the stall. "I really have to review guys. I want to graduate and go on to high school. I want to get out of this situation." Caleb said pushing them aside and goes into the stall. "Listen Caleb, you know the chances of people like us on getting a higher level education? Low like very low. No matter how hard you try you won't go anywhere." Stated his friends. Pushing that what they said out of mind and finished using the bathroom and headed back to class. Already feeling rebellious from lying to his mom, Caleb decides to join them. He and his friends smoke for about 20 mins until another teacher notices smoke in the hallway and enters the bathroom and sees them smoking. "WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU BOYS DOING?!?! The teacher screamed. The male teacher questioned them on who's their teacher and took them to him. Caleb begins to... [[cry and say sorry]] [[fight back and run away]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

"I'm sorry." Caleb cried and begged the teacher to forgive him. But the teacher sent him and his friends to the principle office and expelled them. Caleb woke from his sleep and thanked God that it was just a dream and told himself he would never do this. He sat up and rethought about his decision about lying to his mom or running her errands. Since there was a lot of smoke in the bathroom, Caleb was able to hide himself from the teacher and run away. He and his friends were able to escape and they ran away from the school. A few minutes after he got to class, another teacher came in with his friends saying he caught them smoking in the bathroom and will expell them. At the end of the day, Caleb got his siblings and head for the bus. He saw his sick brother still coughing and saw that he can at least go to the store and pick up some cough syrup and soup. As they were on the bus, Caleb thought about how he should've taken the list to see what groceries he needed but realized he made a mistake and will at least get the soup and cough syrup. Once inside the Cashier saw him and his siblings and ask if he was the kid from yesterday. "Hey kid, weren't you here yesterday?" The Cashier asked. Caleb said.... [["Ummmm.... No"]] [["Agh... As they were heading home, his sick brother began coughing horribly. Caleb felt bad but he really needed to pass this test and study. They arrived an hour before their mom came home. During that time Caleb studied for his test a bit more and helped his siblings with their homework. Finally their mom came home and the sick brother asked her if he was able to stay home tomorrow. His mother agreed and called into work to say she's taking a sick day. As she was making dinner, Caleb... In the office Caleb blames his friends and himself that he got in trouble and his mom will find out how he lied to her. As he sat in the office, he sees his sick brother come into the office with an adult. When he saw who it was started to cry. It was his mom and she was picking up his sick brother. Caleb tried to... He would tell her that he really wanted to study and wanted to do well on his test. At the end of the school day, he collected his siblings but saw that his youngest brother was waiting for him. He asked him where their sick sibling was and his youngest sibling didn't know. Caleb then went to his sick sibling's classroom and asked his teacher where he was. "Ooh your mother picked him up around noon today." The teacher said. With panic, Caleb grabbed his youngest sibling and headed to the bus stop to go back home. He tried to place his face in the wall of binders and pretend to look for a phone number. But the receptionist asked him what he was doing and told him to sit down in the desk. At first Caleb didn't budge but then the principle came out and called him and his friends name into his office. His mother saw him and the look on her face was sadness and anger. She asked the principle what happened and grabbed Caleb by the ear and left the school with his sick brother. He thought this will be a terrible idea and will get in even more trouble with the law, school, and his mom. He quickly thought about it but ultimatley went home and accepted every fate he was about to face. He also thought he might quickly finish his mom's errands. Caleb was unsuccessful with trying to finish his mom's errands. He returned home preparing himself for his mom's wrath. I can explain." Caleb tried to explain. "No buts. I gave you an order and I had your word but you still lie to me. I won't have that type of behavior in my house." "Oh sorry. You look like another kid that was here yesterday asking for his groceries for free." The Cashier stated. "Ahh well I'm only here for cough syrup and soup." Caleb said walking to the back of the store to the pharmacy aisle. Looking at the cough syrup, Caleb saw which medication would be the best to buy on food stamps. He found one that would help a little bit with his sick brother's cough but it's all they can afford. They went to the go get soup and after that they procceeded to the checkout. "I thought that was you. Come back to negotiate some more?" The Cashier laughed. "Nooo, I've come to pick up my sick brother's some cough syrup and soup." Caleb growled. He kept his head down and took his siblings to the pharmacy asile. There he picked up a cough syrup that food stamps covered and picked up some soup on the way back to the checkout line. There his little brother asked Caleb if he can get a candy bar. "Come on Caleb, if you get this for me, I'll won't tell mom." He said. Caleb... The youngest sibling smiles, picks out a candy bar and promises he won't tell mom. When it was their turn to checkout, the Cashier told them their total and Caleb handed him his food stamp card. While the Cashier was ringing them up, he asked Caleb if he was interested in apply for a job to have some extra cash. Caleb... "I'm telling mom." His younger sibling threaten. "Go ahead, I don't care." Caleb said placing the groceries on the convayer belt. "We are looking for a part-time person to either run the cashier or stack the shelves with supplies." The Cashier said. "Sounds interesting, I'll hsve to keep that in mind." Caleb smiled. The Cashier continued talking about the position and placed their groceries in the bags. Once he was done, he handed the bags to Caleb and told him to have and nice day. They arrive home a few minutes before their mother got home and Caleb found the list he left on the table and throw it away. A few minutes later his mother came home. She ask if he got everything on her list and Caleb lied to her again. "Sort of, the store was out on most of the items on your list but I got cough syrup and soup. Also the other things on your list weren't open for some reason." Caleb lied. "Well that's to bad. Is there anyway you can go tomorrow and finish the list?" His mother asked. "Sorry mom, this time I can't. My final test is tomorrow and I can't miss it." Caleb implied. His mother frowned and went to start making dinner with the few things they had in their house. Also he threw away the your list to seem like he finished the list." His mother looked at Caleb and didn't scream. Instead she told him to go get a belt and bring it to her. Back at home, his mom went and got the belt and whipped Caleb 15 times for lying and getting in trouble at school. To get on his mom's good side and make her forget about the day, Caleb helped his mom with dinner. Caleb tried to change the subject so he won't be caught in a lie. His mom gladly talked about her day through dinner time. His youngest brother interrupted her by telling about his day. Caleb gave him a dirty look to remind him to keep his promise by Caleb buying the candy bar. His brother looked at him and gave a smile and talked about school. After dinner, Caleb got ready for bed. "So how was everyone's day?" She asked. His youngest sibling started talking about his day and Caleb gave him a dirty glare at him to remember his promise he made from the candy bar. He didn't want to tell her that he didn't complete the other two things on her list because she'll give this whole lecture about how their are other stores somewhere that had what they needed but he was to lazy to go to them. Later his mom called from the kitchen saying dinner was ready. At the dinner table, his mom ask how running errands were and Caleb told her the truth. "Well, you know you could've tried the other places that are a bit further away instead of quitting after the first one." His mother implied. "Well I only of that location." Caleb said. They continued this conversation until his sick sibling started coughing. Caleb got up and handed his mom cough syrup he got. He got it out of the cabinets and gave it to his mom, who then stopped eating and gave some to his sick brother. The sick brother finally stopped his coughing fit and continued eating. When their mom finally came home, Caleb told her what happened at the two stops and was understanding of the situations. "Well you still could've gone to other palces that were further away." His mother stated. "Yea but they were far away." Caleb said. She started to make mac and cheese for dinner and ask how everyone's day was. At around 5 o'clock, their mom came home and without a beat his little brother told their mom that Caleb allowed their sick brother to stay at home with him. "Well child, your brother is very sick so it was great judgement on Caleb's part to keep him at home. Caleb stuck his tongue out at his little brother and continued to study. While their mom was making mac and cheese for dinner, his sick brother began to have a coughing fit. Caleb... Caleb gave the cough syrup to his mom so she could give it to him. She told Caleb to finsih making mac and cheese while she helped his sick brother. After the mac and cheese was finsished and the coughing fit subsided, everyone sat at the table and ate dinner. After dinner, Caleb went to his room and studied some more. He found some eggs and toast he bought yesterday and made his brothers and him breakfast. Before his mother left for work, the sick brother asked her if he can stay home. "Sweetheart is there anyway you can go to school?" Their mother asked. "Mom please." His sick brother coughed. His mother sighed and called into work and told them she needed to take a sick day. She unfortunately, she wasn't able to take one and stay at home with him but allowed him to stay home by himself for once. Caleb and his little brother finished breakfast and headed to school. As they arrived at school, Caleb went to his class and quickly studied for his test. The test was right away in the morning and was an hour long. The teacher took attendance and talked a little about the test. Caleb was really nervous now and whispered to himself that he got. "Ok class, the tests will be graded before lunch since its scantron, so remember to look outside the classroom to see the posted grades. If I catch anyone of you cheating I will take your test and grade it as is. Also for the ones that are on the border of repeating 8th grade, you'll need a 70% or better to pass this grade." As soon as Caleb looked at his test, he blanked for at the first question and started to panic. He calmed himself down and answered the first question. "Just once." Caleb thought to himself when he looked at his teacher to see if he would notice Caleb cheating. Caleb slighty turned his head to his neighbor and copied their answer onto his. "I'm better than this." Caleb thought to himself. He thought about the question and realized that this is the question he focused on a lot when he was studying. He got the answer and continued with the test. [[continue the test]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Caleb was now half way done with the test, but another hard qestion presented himself to him. Caleb tried to figure it out but wanted to cheat again. He thought about skipping the question but would forget about the question and be off by one on the scantron. He again decided to... Again Caleb looked at his teacher to see if he was searching for cheaters. He wasn't and Caleb peered over the same neighbors scantron to look at their answer. He heard his teacher yell at another student for cheating and took their scrantron and scored it, Caleb quickly looked back at his own test and continued his test. He read the question and started to eliminate answers that didn't make since. He finally got an answer that worked with the question and continued with the test. [[continue with the test]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Caleb was now on the finally page of the test, but once again a hard question came up. Caleb tried to bring himself to not to cheat but he really wanted a good grade. He decides to... [[cheat one last time]] [[guess and finsish the test]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Caleb looked at his neighbor without looking at his teacher and got caught. "Caleb! Bring your test here. You're done. I told you no cheating." Caleb got up and dragged himself to his teacher's desk. Caleb tried to come at it a different way, reread the question, and tried to eliminate options but it didn't work to get an answer. Caleb didn't know so he guessed at the question. Finally everyone was done and the teacher allowed them to have free time as he went to score the scantrons. Nervous, Caleb stayed in his seat finished some homework he had. About 15 mins later, the teacher came back and posted the scores on the classroom door. Caleb ran to the door and checked his score. He saw his score, which was a 71%, and smiled because he passed his finally test of the year. "I PASSED 8TH GRADE!" He shouted. His teacher came up to him and congradulated him. At home, Caleb did his chores and thought about graduation on Saturday. When his mom came home at 5pm, he told her how he is going to graduate 8th grade. "My baby passed his test. This calls for a celebration dinner." Right before they left for dinner, the sick sibling fainted. His mom dropped everything an pick up the sick sibling and brought him to his room. After about 30 sec, he regained conscinousness and started to cough. [[wait downstairs]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

His mother came back downstairs after getting the sick sibling stable and apologized about not able to go to dinner. She realized their situation and asked Cale a question. "I know you want to better your life, but is their anyway you can stay here and help around house like taking care of your brother and running errand. What I'm asking you is, can you drop out of school." She asked. "Why can't you just take him to the doctor? Caleb questioned but knew the answer. Caleb decided to continue with his education and went to a decent high school. Fast forward to Caleb's sophomore year of high school. He is stress about school and working at the Corner store as their cashier. Unfornately, his sick brother died at the end of his freshman year of high school from not getting the medical attention he needed. He blames his mom on not taking his brother to the doctor when he didn't, but deep down realize there was no way for her to take him. He struggles deeply in his rest of his years of high school because of work, stress, and the death of his sick brother. [[end game]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

After graduation, Caleb thinks about the rest of his life and decides to dropout of school to provide a better financial sercuity for his family and help his mom run errands and take care of his siblings. With dropping out of school, his mother had time and money to take off of work to take his sick sibling to the doctors and take the help he needed. The sibling got better and now lives a decent life. He took the job at the Corner Store and makes enough money to get him some night classes and the community center. [[end the game]] back to [[Caleb's Test]]

Congradulations prayer! Even though this is a sad choose, you chose Caleb to dropout of school and help with his family. Even though he is continuing the cycle of poverty, his brother was able to get the help he needed and now his family has money to get enough food to have good heathly breakfast and dinners. From his job and the night classes, Caleb was able to pay for some classes at a communtiy college and get an education. He will have more decisions in life to make it better. "Caleb I talked to mom and she said I can stay home alone since I'm really sick. She was going to stay home but she got tolf she needed to go to work." His sick brother said. "Ok," Caleb said. He went to go get the belt and she gave him 10 whippings on the butt. He let out a cry each time. After she was done, he ran to his room and cried and talked bad about how much he hated her. "Aren't you going to make us breakfast?" His little brother asked. "Go make your own breakfast!" Caleb barked at him.
