She smiles faintly. The corners of her eyes crinkle. You wonder if this is how it feels to save the entire world. To give someone joy from your actions, however small they may be.\n\n“Thanks, <<$name>>.”\n\nYou nod. Aleta slowly lowers her eyelids, as curtains drawn upon the last act in a play, until the lashes rest just on the upper curve of her cheeks. “Oye, don’t you think it’s getting a little bit late?”\n\nYou point out that it’s the weekend and that you two can stay up ‘till the cock crows. Not literally. But she yawns and rubs her eyes almost comically on the heels of her palms. “Pretty please?”\n\nIntro Choice3-4
Though Aleta says nothing, her frozen expression lacks the warmth of her previously animated self. Her fingers curl inwards. The tendons on the backs of her hands rise from her skin. “I’m going to bed,” she announces, rolling over. Feeling as though you’ve just destroyed something precious and unmendable, you flick off the light to flood the room in darkness.\n\nWhen you awaken the next morning, she’s gone. So is her backpack. So is your car. All that remains of her is the thick rope tied to the foot of your bed that extends through the open window and down to the driveway.\n\nYou never see her again.\n\nED 1: TODAY OP WAS A PIECE OF TRASH
She wins the game of //Monopoly// after the two of you fight for the racecar. Several rounds of //Uno//, laughing over shit anime, and just generally talking about nothing at all later, you somehow end up lying horizontally on your bed with her on your right side. From your position you can feel her warmth radiating from her. She lifts her head up slightly from the bed.\n\n“Oye, <<$name>>.”\n\nYou blink.\n\n“You think I’m a girl, right?”\n\nIntro Choice3-2\n\n[[You’re not sure. At least, not entirely. LT-HS ED Choice2-2\n\nLT-HS ED Choice2-3
The two of you take turns brushing your teeth, showering (turns out she showers at night rather than in the morning, another fact you log away in your growing book of memories), the nighttime ritual.\n\n“Oye.”\n\nYou look over your shoulder to her. She doesn’t appear to have changed into any pyjamas and you’re curious if she simply sleeps in her day clothing. But then why the backpack?\n\n“You don’t have any security types of things on your house, do you? I got in without a sweat.”\n\nRight. You’d nearly forgotten about that. Actually, you //had//, but there’s no need to admit it so openly. Both the security and the fact that you hadn’t locked the door when you’d come in’ you’ve got to be more mindful than that. You explain that the security’s set to “stay”: If anyone opens one of the doors, it’ll start beeping everyone’s ears off. Her brow furrows, and she exhales slowly, a tremor running down her form. Unable to read her emotions, you slip from your bedroom and enter the password to turn on the home security.\n\nBy the time you return she’s already turned off the light. And is lying on the floor. Drat. You were about to take the floor to give her the bed. Kneeling by her side, you slide your hands beneath her and try to pick her up, but your muscles fail you and you do nothing but hit your own head on the wooden frame of your bed.\n\nIntro Choice4-1

When you awaken—or think you’ve awakened, at any rate, given the contents of some of your dreams, starting off perfectly normal only to steadily descend into horror—you sense movement by your side. For a terrifyingly long second you don’t remember Aleta’s presence and consider this the end.\n\nYou’ve had a good run, really: Your parents have never bothered you; you’ve got fantastic grades; you’ll undoubtedly accepted into some college or other; you’ve never truly suffered for want of something; and in seventh grade you beat your then-archrival in a game of review jeopardy (math class was never the same). Boring, sure, but not bad. Then reality comes crashing in and you sit up to meet the massive knot of a thick rope tied around the foot of your bed.\n\nYou follow the rope like a small child following a trail of sweets to the window. Where Aleta perches on the edge, the breeze from outside rippling her unzipped jacket into a pair of wings.\n\nRapidly you fumble for the lights. The //click// coincides with her swinging her head towards you. Her lips part; her eyes widen; she wobbles on the sill and just barely grabs the open frame for support. Her other hand hangs loosely down as though she were in the process of reaching for her backpack.\n\nYou stare at her. She stares are you. An explanation? She has one: “Sorry for trying to pull a fast one on you. I’m going on a roadtrip. Just a little one around. Before college, you know? Like a gap year compressed into a couple days, neh?”\n\nThe opportunity that has just landed in your lap seems unbelievable. More than a miracle, but an escape from the monotony of your mundane life. Not that your parents would notice you missing. They’ve been gone on a business trip for the past week. If it’s only for a few days, you could have the adventure of a lifetime and still be home in time for their return.\n\nAnd Aleta. //Aleta//. Anything she does has to be the best decision, right? Right?\n\nIntro Choice4-2\n\nIntro Choice4-3
Part2 Both4-1
She studies you for a moment. Then she shrugs. “Mejor para mi,” she mutters to herself. For an instant she hovers on the edge, about to open her wings and take flight; in the next she’s out of the window and out of your life. Forever.\n\nYou never see her again.\n\nED 2: STAYING IN THE NEST
She studies you for a moment. Then her fingers squish yours, the tips calloused, the palm warm and soft. “Sure. Why not. The more the merrier, eh? Welcome aboard. I’ll go down first, ‘kay? Then you can toss my pack to me. You can do that for me, can’t you?”\n\nNodding, you watch as she squeezes through the window and scales down to the driveway. “Throw it down,” Aleta yells up to the window. You oblige. It’s heavy, but the //thwmp// of her catching it pleases your senses. “Now throw yourself down.”\n\nOh. You hadn’t thought this through. When you peer through the window, however, everything seems so high up that you can’t help but reel yourself back before the dizzying height draws your dinner up your throat.\n\nThen you realise you could simply turn off the security and go through the front door. //That// might explain her dive through the window.\n\nAs you rush through your house, scarcely bothering to grab even another pair of clothing, it comes to just how goddamn fantastical this entire day has been. Like the first episode of an anime, complete with a girl falling out of the sky.\nSometimes things happen that are so surprising, the rest of one’s life pales in comparison to this single jewelled moment, so wondrous that it could make high priests switch faiths, nations rise from barren rock, and entirely new planets to simply blink into existence with a sound like gum popping. Spearmint gum, specifically, swaddled in the shiny wrappers that she collected on the back of her notebook. She’d drawn in a map of the world and was in the process of colouring them in with wrappers, charting the oceans in blue and the land in green, with a strange streak of red running diagonal across the United States in the shape of a bird’s wing.\n\nSometimes these things are so surprising, in fact, that you can’t help but stare at them, transfixed. For example, if the sun suddenly gleamed a vivid green. Or if the cement beneath your feet cleaved in half to reveal the pale molepeople come, at last, to claim the surface world. Or if the fictional characters you adored sprang to life to invite you to a roadtrip with them.\n\nThough they don’t have to be fictional to invite you, somehow, to a roadtrip.\n\nPart1 Trust1-1

The bed, the small collection of items from various fandoms you love (you don’t exactly have entire great wads of cash sitting around in forests of green paper, but you do get some income via commissions), the textbooks on the makeshift desk, the unfinished homework that was technically due today (begging the teacher granted you an extension over the weekend), the complete mess on your floor, the rumpled clothing that you //neglected to put away how could you have been so forgetful//, the millions of mistakes that abruptly call to you with the unending chatter of anxiety.\nYou swallow. Sometimes things happen that are so surprising, the rest of one’s life pales in comparison to this single jewelled moment, so wondrous that it could make high priests switch faiths, nations rise from barren rock, and entirely new planets to simply blink into existence with a sound like gum popping. Or if the fictional characters you adored sprang to life to invite you to a slumber party with them.\n\nThough they don’t have to be fictional to invite you, somehow, to a slumber party. After all, even from your room, where you’ve tried to put on the best clothes you have, you can hear the doorbell ring and you understand that the invitation that morning wasn’t a mere dream.\n\nIntro Choice1-2\n\nIntro Choice1-3

With all of the grace of someone who hasn’t left <<$obPro>> room, other than for school, in more than a couple years, you open your door, give everything a final sweep, and step into the hallway. While you look for her silhouette at the door, you realise with a start that she’s already inside. You realise a moment after that the room appears to be spinning. Belatedly you notice that you’re falling.\n\nWelp. There it is. You just fell on your damn ass in front of her. In front of //her// of all people. Then her dark hand comes into view, pulling you up. “You ‘kay there, <<$name>>?” she asks, her easy smile one of amusement rather than contempt.\n\nIntro Choice1-4

Hurriedly you try to throw your hair into less disarray as you observe yourself in the mirror. The longer you stare at yourself, the lower you can feel your confidence sink. When you go to fetch the //Monopoly// box, you note for the first time the heavy backpack she’s brought with her, significantly larger than anything one’d really need for staying over at someone’s house for one night. Unless she’s somehow decided to literally bring a spare bathroom for herself. Not that you’d know, since you’ve never been to anyone’s house. Or had anyone at your house. Until tonight.\n\nIntro Choice3-1
“Ooh, trying to be a rebel, eh?” She winks. Aleta. Aleta has winked at you. While sitting on your bed. In your room. If your legs collapse beneath you at any moment, you’ll have no one to blame but yourself. “Wanna start the evening off by being true blood United States-ians?”\n\nYou tilt your head to one side questioningly.\n\n“Got any board games? Something short’d be right up my alley.”\n\n//Monopoly// might be a good idea. The other board games you’ve got in your stash run upwards of a few hours, while a decent game of //Monopoly// between two people is decided the instant someone has more money than the other.\n\nYou’re still fixated on her left eye. The one that winked. Reflected over again in the lens of her glasses, you can see That wink. Wait. Wait. You need to calm down. Calm is good. Calm is the key to winning.\n\nIntro Choice2-4
“Sounds neat.” She dips her head. “So, wha’cha wanna do? Board games or something?”\n\nBoard games. Board games are always nice, right? Or tabletop games. You’ve got a few and offer them. She settles on //Monopoly//: “Turns out that things that suck offline end up pretty fun online. Nothing like a good reminder that the world around is a crapsack, eh?”\n\nYou raise an eyebrow in her direction. Usually she’s pretty upbeat and optimistic. Which isn’t to say she’s //wrong//, of course. You don’t know much about economics either way. Ah, but: your guest. Mustn’t be distracted. Intro Choice2-4
Aleta Lupe Almahilla-Encarna. She’s a senior in high school—the same grade as you yourself—and she’s in the running to be valedictorian. President of the local FBLA chapter. She’s dressed in a loose black jacket and baggy jeans that cut off below the knee along with a pair of sandals. Your gaze darts from her black hair, kept back in a short ponytail, to her red-rimmed glasses, standing out against her brown skin. Her spread fingers reveal trimmed fingernails painted a brilliant blue.\n\nYou’ve spent much of your class time over the three years simply watching her. It’s not as if you were obsessing with her or something like that. But the two of you kept ending up in the same classes, at least until this year, when she started taking more AP courses that you could dream of. Merely the thought of that much work manifests in droplets of sweat on your forehead. And, you suppose, sometime over the course of those three years, you became more and more interested in who she was, in what she had to say. \n\nEspecially as you watched her transition. You don’t really remember her before she announced that she was a girl. If you dredge up your earliest memories of her you can vaguely call to mind a curly-haired kid you perceived as a boy and didn’t think anything of. You’re not sure if she’s started hormone replacement therapy or anything like that yet, but as far as you’re aware the school took her gender in stride as she grew her hair out and experimented with dresses.\nBut the courage to say something like that. //That’s// what inspired you all of these years. //That’s// why, when, out of the blue, she inquired if she could come over to your house (you’d been complaining about your parents’ eternal absence from the house to another schooltime acquaintance), you almost didn’t have a choice in your response.\n\n“Can’t believe this is the first time I’ve been to your house,” Aleta says. The words break you from your introspection. She smooths her hand over the bedsheet. “S’ pretty spacious, y’know? Oh, ‘fore I forget: How late can we stay up?”\n\nIntro Choice2-3\n\nIntro Choice2-2
