Though Aleta says nothing, her frozen expression lacks the warmth of her previously animated self. Her fingers curl inwards. The tendons on the backs of her hands rise from her skin. “I’m going to bed,” she announces, rolling over. Feeling as though you’ve just destroyed something precious and unmendable, you flick off the light to flood the room in darkness.\n\nWhen you awaken the next morning, she’s gone. So is her backpack. So is your car. She wins the game of //Monopoly// after the two of you fight for the racecar. Several rounds of //Uno//, laughing over shit anime, and just generally talking about nothing at all later, you somehow end up lying horizontally on your bed with her on your right side. From your position you can feel her warmth radiating from her. She lifts her head up slightly from the bed.\n\n“Oye, <<$name>>.”\n\nYou blink.\n\n“You think I’m a girl, right?”\n\n[[Of course you do. Actually, you //had//, but there’s no need to admit it so openly. Both the security and the fact that you hadn’t locked the door when you’d come in’ you’ve got to be more mindful than that. You explain that the security’s set to “stay”: If anyone opens one of the doors, it’ll start beeping everyone’s ears off. Her brow furrows, and she exhales slowly, a tremor running down her form. Unable to read her emotions, you slip from your bedroom and enter the password to turn on the home security.\n\nBy the time you return she’s already turned off the light. And is lying on the floor. Drat. You were about to take the floor to give her the bed. Kneeling by her side, you slide your hands beneath her and try to pick her up, but your muscles fail you and you do nothing but hit your own head on the wooden frame of your bed.\n\n[[Eventually you sigh, give in, and take the spot of floor between her body and the wall.|Intro Choice4-1]]

When you awaken—or think you’ve awakened, at any rate, given the contents of some of your dreams, starting off perfectly normal only to steadily descend into horror—you sense movement by your side. For a terrifyingly long second you don’t remember Aleta’s presence and consider this the end.\n\nYou’ve had a good run, really: Your parents have never bothered you; you’ve got fantastic grades; you’ll undoubtedly accepted into some college or other; you’ve never truly suffered for want of something; and in seventh grade you beat your then-archrival in a game of review jeopardy (math class was never the same). Boring, sure, but not bad. Then reality comes crashing in and you sit up to meet the massive knot of a thick rope tied around the foot of your bed.\n\nYou follow the rope like a small child following a trail of sweets to the window. Where Aleta perches on the edge, the breeze from outside rippling her unzipped jacket into a pair of wings.\n\nRapidly you fumble for the lights. The //click// coincides with her swinging her head towards you. Her lips part; her eyes widen; she wobbles on the sill and just barely grabs the open frame for support. Her other hand hangs loosely down as though she were in the process of reaching for her backpack.\n\nYou stare at her. She stares are you. An explanation? She has one: “Sorry for trying to pull a fast one on you. I’m going on a roadtrip. Just a little one around. Before college, you know? Like a gap year compressed into a couple days, neh?”\n\nThe opportunity that has just landed in your lap seems unbelievable. More than a miracle, but an escape from the monotony of your mundane life. Not that your parents would notice you missing. They’ve been gone on a business trip for the past week. If it’s only for a few days, you could have the adventure of a lifetime and still be home in time for their return.\n\nAnd Aleta. //Aleta//. Anything she does has to be the best decision, right? You can do that for me, can’t you?”\n\nNodding, you watch as she squeezes through the window and scales down to the driveway. “Throw it down,” Aleta yells up to the window. You oblige. It’s heavy, but the //thwmp// of her catching it pleases your senses. “Now throw yourself down.”\n\nOh. You hadn’t thought this through. When you peer through the window, however, everything seems so high up that you can’t help but reel yourself back before the dizzying height draws your dinner up your throat.\n\nThen you realise you could simply turn off the security and go through the front door. //That// might explain her dive through the window.\n\nAs you rush through your house, scarcely bothering to grab even another pair of clothing, it comes to just how goddamn fantastical this entire day has been. Like the first episode of an anime, complete with a girl falling out of the sky.\nSometimes things happen that are so surprising, the rest of one’s life pales in comparison to this single jewelled moment, so wondrous that it could make high priests switch faiths, nations rise from barren rock, and entirely new planets to simply blink into existence with a sound like gum popping. Spearmint gum, specifically, swaddled in the shiny wrappers that she collected on the back of her notebook. She’d drawn in a map of the world and was in the process of colouring them in with wrappers, charting the oceans in blue and the land in green, with a strange streak of red running diagonal across the United States in the shape of a bird’s wing.\n\nSometimes these things are so surprising, in fact, that you can’t help but stare at them, transfixed. For example, if the sun suddenly gleamed a vivid green. Or if the cement beneath your feet cleaved in half to reveal the pale molepeople come, at last, to claim the surface world.
