Thank you for going on this Procession for the Many Dead with us.\n\nThe prayers used in the procession were taken from The Litany to the Many Dead by Rebecca Lynn Scott. You can find more information about it
here
.\n\nThe Procession for the Many Dead was created by Rebecca Lynn Scott.

A Procession for the Many Dead is an online ritual, an attempt to give you a taste of what taking part in such a thing would be like in the physical world. \n\nA procession like this one is meant to be participatory. Text that
looks like this
is meant to be read aloud by you.\n\nThis is a ritual for the Dead. Not all of the Dead died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. We will be praying to those who died by violence, who died enslaved, who died victims. There are no graphic images here, but some of these prayers do address these things. Be aware.\n\n\n\n\n\nAre you ready to begin?\n\n[[Yes|Enter]]
And now you all stumble out into the predawn light, back in the world of the Living. People huddle together quietly, talking of going all together for food, or of home and bed and sleep. Everyone has been touched, has been changed, by this Procession for the Dead.\n\nYou stop and turn back to look at the graveyard. It looks different as the light slowly turns from blue towards grey. What did you touch? What were you changed by? What will you take away with you?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
[[(fin)|End]]
\n

As you say farewell to the Dead, the priestess in the skull mask calls you over to her to speak to her privately.\n\n"The Living need the Dead, and the Dead need the Living. Will you take oath to serve the Dead, to come to know them, to make regular offerings to them, to serve as oracle to them? It is a heavy choice, and only you can choose for yourself."\n\n[[Yes, I will serve.|oath]] -- [[No, I cannot promise that now.|Closing]]

Here in the center is a trench in the ground, like a shallow open grave, loose earth piled beside it.\n\nThree priestesses in blank white masks step forward. One carries a flask of milk, one carries a flask of honey, and one carries a flask of wine. As the pour their offerings into the trench, the priestess in the skull mask speaks.\n\nWe make offering to the Thirsty Dead\nWe make offering to the Thirsty Dead\nWho are relegated to the Dry Lands\nBeyond the Rivers and Springs\nPlease accept our offerings\nWe make offering to the Thirsty Dead\nWe make offering to the Thirsty Dead\n\nYou feel the spirits of the Dead flow towards the trench, eager to taste of the offerings. More members of the procession move forward to set their own offerings around the edges. Food, drinks, flowers, anything that might please their beloved Dead.\n\nWhat have you brought for yours? Who among the Dead do you honor tonight? Who haved you loved who has passed beyond? They are here tonight, with you. Speak to them. Tell them how much you love them, miss them. Tell them what has happened to you this year. Tell them of your joys and sorrows, triumphs and failures. Feel them around you, and know that they love you. Listen to them as they tell you how much they love you.\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen you are done, [[tell them goodbye|question]].

You all stand at the entrance to the graveyard, which has many paths. All of you are masked, and all of you carry offerings, of food, of drink, of incense, of candles, of votive figures.\n\nThe priestess in the skull mask carries a drum, and beats out triplets behind the words as she recites the opening prayer. You and the others in your band echo back the first and last lines.\n\nWe pray to the Many Dead\n
We pray to the Many Dead
\nAll over the world and throughout history\nAll those who have gone before us\nWe remember you, and hold you in our prayers\nWe pray to the Many Dead\n
We pray to the Many Dead
\n\n\n\n\n\nShe leads you all forward, to the [[first fork|West]] in the path.
As the Living and the Dead finish their conversations, and dawn draws near, the priestess in the skull mask steps up to the trench, and with her bare hands begins to fill it with loose earth. The rest of the band joins in, adding any food or drink to the trench, picking up everything else. It's soon full and smooth again, the flowers laid atop it.\n\nThe priestess speaks the prayer from the beginning of the procession again, this time sounding tired but fulfilled and contented.\n\nWe pray to the Many Dead\nWe pray to the Many Dead\nAll over the world and throughout history\nAll those who have gone before us\nWe remember you, and hold you in our prayers\nWe pray to the Many Dead\nWe pray to the Many Dead\n\n\n\n\n\nAnd now it is time to [[leave|Exit]].
