The Unseen

Duke sits on a cot in a makeshift shack. It has a blanket hanging over an opening in the front as a makeshift door. Duke leans against the wall and looks dejectedly at the ground. His legs hang over the side. He's staringdown at a picture of him and another man who looks just like him. A heavy set, dark-skinned man with a beard pushes aside a curtain. "Good morning," Glenn greets. [[Good morning.]] [[Say nothing.]]

"Ready for your first mission?" His voice is concerned, like a dad asking his kid if he's ready for his first big football game. He stands in the doorway waiting for an answer. [[Say nothing.]] [[I hate it out there.]] [[Ready as I'll ever be.]]

Duke pushes aside the blanket hanging over the door and steps out into the camp. Other shacks surround him, make of the same sheets of metal and wood as his own. There are tents scattered among the shacks, as well. There are groups of people huddles together talking among themselves. [[Explore camp.]] [[Go to the armory.]]

Duke walks through the camp. The people in the camp come in every skin color, size, and gender. There aren't any young children in the crowd. Most of the people here are twenty or older. The one thing they have in common is their color. It's dulled, as if someone has drain the hue out of everyone. There's a table off to Duke's left. A group of people crowd around it, but you can make out an older man in an apron. There's also a group of people off to Duke's right. They sit in a circle around an older lady in a wheelchair. She holds a book open in her hands. In front of Duke, is a fifteen-year-old girl. Her colorful, vibrant clothes contrast with her dark skin. Her curly hair is pulled back into two pigtails. She bounces on the balls of her feet as she flips through papers on a clipboard. [[Talk to the fifteen-year-old.]] [[Talk to the man in the apron.]]

Kai greets you. "Hey." [[Hello, how are you today?]] [[Let's get this done.]]

"That one's my favorite," Lisa says. [[Leave armory.]]

"That's a good choice," Glenn says with a smirk. Duke takes the shotgun. [[Leave armory.]]

"If you're done, let's go." Kai says. Duke got the handgun. [[Leave armory.]]

Kai, Lisa, Glenn, and Duke walk out of camp. As the gates open, the guards shout things from their towers. "Good luck." "Kick some, ass you guys!" "Those monsters won't know what hit them." The gates close behind them. [[Foward.]]

"Not one for conversation, huh? I was like that when I first got here, too." Glenn walks over and puts a hand on Duke's shoulder. "If you need anything, I have your back. I just want you to know that." Duke looks up at Glenn. [[Thanks. I'll keep that in mind.]] [[Stay quiet.]] [[I hate it out there.]]

"We all hate it out there. I know it's scary at times, but sometimes you just have to push through the fear," Glenn says. [[What if I don't make it back?]] [[I'll try.]] [[I don't know if I can do this.]]

Glenn gives Duke a small smile. "That's the spirit." His voice changes, as if he's comforting a nervous child. "Don't worry, you'll be fine." Glenn stops at the makeshift door. "We're meeting up in the armory. Come there whenever you're ready." [[Stay and think.]] [[Leave shack.]]

"Oh so you do have a voice," Glenn jokes. He gives Duke a smile. "I hope it stays that way. I know we may have more important things to worry about, but I like getting to know my soliders." Glenn turns to leave, but throws a glance over his sholder. "Meet Kai in the armory whenever you're ready." He disappears from the doorway. [[Stay and think.]] [[Leave shack.]]

"Guess you really are the strong silent type," Glenn says. "Whenever you're ready, meet Kai in the armory." Glenn leaves. Duke is left alone again. [[Stay and think.]] [[Leave shack.]]

Duke stays and wallows in his thoughts. He thinks back to when he first landed in this world. The faceless people. The blob-shaped monsters that chased him relentless. He swore he saw hallowed eye socks and open gaping maws in the lumps of the monster. Duke shivers. [[Leave shack.]]

"You will." There's no hint of doubt in Glenn's voice. "That's why we go out in teams. As long as you watch our backs, we'll watch yours." "Kai's a great leader. She'll make sure that you make it back." Glenn gives Duke a smile. Glenn stands and makes his way to the door. "Don't forget, we're meeting at the armory." [[Stay and think.]] [[Leave shack.]]

Glenn gives a small smile. "That's all anyone can ask for. Come to the armory whenever you feel ready." Glenn exits the shack. [[Leave shack.]] [[Stay and think.]]

"We all felt that way at one time or another." Glenn sits down on the end of the bed. "You can do this. Trust me." Glenn moves towards the door. "When you feel ready, come to the armory." [[Leave shack.]] [[Stay and think.]]

Duke hears the girl hum to herself as he approaches. She looks up when she hears the crunch of his footsteps on the grass. "Duke, hi!" Her voice is chipper, like a bird during sunrise. "Lisa, right?" Duke replies. "Aw, you remembered my name. How sweet." She gives Duke a smile. "What can I do for you?" [[People don't remember your name?]] [[What are you doing?]] [[Where's the armory?]]

Duke walks up to the lady. Her long, silver hair is pulled back into a ponytail. She closed the book she was reading. "Alright, that's the last chapter for today," She says.

Dan has short black hair and blue eyes the color of the night sky. His five o'clock shadow just barely hides the cleft in his chin. The apron he wears is splattered with food stains. Dan gives Duke a side-glance as he hands out food to people in the crowd. "Sorry, you'll have to wait your turn like everyone else." [[But I'm hungry! (Lie)]] [[I'm leaving camp soon.]] [[Okay. (Wait in line).]]

Lisa's eyebrow's furrow in anger and she puffs out one cheek. "I'm just a kid to a lot of people. I'm invisible, a lot of the time." [[I remember what it was like to be that young. It's hard.]] [[You are a kid.]] [[That's rough.]]

"I'm making a list of supplies we need. Dan told me we're running low some things. I usually handle putting together supplies for the team before a mission, too." Lisa replies, tapping pen to her chin. [[Go to the armory.]]

"It's right behind me." Lisa points to a wooden building that looks a lot sturdier than most of the others around it. It looks like toolshed without any paneling or paint on it. The door hangs open. "Did you need anything else?" [[What are you doing?]]

Lisa gives you a sweet smile. Relief shines in her eyes. "Thank you, Duke. People usually don't care about my feelings since I'm so young." She gives a little huff. "They think I'm overracting because of hormones. We don't exist anymore. I not even sure I still have those." A blush creeps up her face. "Oh, I'm ranting, aren't I? Sorry." [[Don't worry about it.]] [[I don't have time for your life story.]] [[I, uh, don't really want to hear about your hormones. No offense.]]

A sly smile appears on Lisa's face. "I may be a kid, but I'm still the best shot in camp. You need anything else, or do you want me to one up you some more? I can do this allllll day." [[Where's the armory?]] [[What are you doing?]]

"It is, but I'll survive." Lisa rolls her eyes. "Need anything else?" [[Where's the armory?]] [[What are you doing?]]

"You're so sweet Duke. We're lucky to have you," Lisa says. "Was there anything else?" [[Where's the armory?]] [[What are you doing?]]

Lisa crossed her arms and stick one foot out and taps it. She glares at you. "Don't ask if you don't care. I don't need people to pretend to care about me." Lisa goes back to flipping through her clipboard. [[Try to talk to her again.]]

Lisa gives a small laugh. "Fair enough. Was there anything else?" [[Where's the armory?]] [[What are you doing?]]

Lisa ignore Duke. After a few minutes of Duke awkwardly standing around her, she walks away. [[Explore camp.]]

"Oh we have a real smart-ass on our hands." Lisa snickers. "You asked for it buddy. Don't blame me if you run back to your shack crying."

"Wow, so defensive. What I //meant// was that I don't want you to //die// out there. Carrying your corpse back would be a waste of resources." Lisa says this in her usual chipper voice. Her look softens. "Even Kai gets injured out in the feild. You need to make sure you're well stocked. Your condition effects the whole team." [[Take potion.]]

Dan snorts. "Too bad. You're not more important than any of these people." He doesn't stop handing out food while he talks to you. A dark haired lady takes a bowl of rice and leaves. [[I'm working with your leader.]] [[Okay. (Wait in line).]]

"You should have said that first," Dan grunts. He slides a bowl to you. Go one bowl of rice. +1 rice bowl. [[Go to the armory.]] [[Talk to the fifteen-year-old.]]

Duke stands at the end of the line. It takes about ten minutes before Duke is at the front of the line. "Now that wasn't so bad, was it?" Dan asks, as he sets a bowl down in front of Duke. +1 Rice bowl. [[Talk to the fifteen-year-old.]] [[Go to the armory.]]

"Well unless you got a mission today, you're wastin' my time." Dan gives Duke an annoyed look. [[I do.]] [[I think I'll just wait in line.|Okay. (Wait in line).]]

"Well you should have said that first," Dan said. He rubs his temples. "Hold on." Dan disappears from the front of the stand and a second later he appears with a bowl of rice. "Here you go." [[Thank you.]] [(set: $choicea to false)[[Took you long enough.]]]

"Don't mention it, kid." Dan says, as he hands you the rice bowl. "Don't get too banged up out there. Kai needs all the help she can get." Dan turns and goes back to working in the kitchen. [[Talk to the fifteen-year-old.]] [[Go to the armory.]]

"Listen, kid. Kai doens't care for rude people. She'll drop you like a bad habit if you don't do that same to that attidude of yours." Dan said, his expression unreadable. "You haven't been around her long enough to figure that out yet, so I'm doing you a favor. I don't like seeing anyone here get hurt, even if they happen to be a snot-nosed brat." He slides you a bowl of rice. [[Who are you calling snot-nosed, old man?]] [[Is that a threat?]] [[Okay.]]

"I've heard better comebacks from my dog," Dan replies. He turns and returns to work. [[Talk to the fifteen-year-old.]] [[Go to the armory.]]

"No. It's a fact. Kai doesn't like dead weight and if you can get along with your teammates, that's what you'll be to her," Dan explains. Some of the people around Duke snicker at him. Others sneer or shoot him harsh glares. A few of them look down into their food, avoiding eye-contact and eating quietly. Duke swallows and looks down at the rice. "I didn't poison it. I'd let Kai do the honors herself." Dan turns and walks back to the stove without another word. [[Take the rice.]] [[Don't take the rice.]]

Duke's voice squeaks as he gives a pathetic "Okay." "Yeah, that's what I thought," Dan says, before going back to work. Duke walks away from the kitchen stand with his tail (metaphorically) in-between his legs. [[Talk to the fifteen-year-old.]] [[Go to the armory.]]

Kai gives a smirk. "Did he? You shouldn't provoke him. He was in the Mafia. And food is always scarce around here." Duke gives Kai a horrified look. "She's joking," Glenn deadpans. "I am not. Dan really was in the Mafia at one point. Told me himself," Kai replies. [[I am going to apologize to him as soon as we get back.]] [[Oh fuck.]] [[Really? He seems like such a nice guy.]]

"Yeah, you'd better." Kai laughs. "Now let's get ready for the mission. Pick a weapon." [[Pick weapon.]]

Kai laughs. "Yeah, you're in some deep shit. You can deal with that when we get back from the mission. Now, pick a weapon." [[Can't I do it now?]] [[Pick weapon.]]

Kai chuckles and shakes her head. "Well, at least you got a sense of humor. Let's get ready for the mission." She motions to a rack of weapons. [[Pick weapon.]]

Kai raises an eyebrow. "Uh, as good as I can be while trapped in an world with monsters trying to kill me." "At least he's friendly," Glenn says. [[Fair enough.]]

"Quick and to the point. I like it." Kai says with a small smile. "Take a weapon." [[Pick weapon.]]

Kai walks through the streets. Cars are stopped in the street. Faceless people are in the cars, their hands are on the steering wheel facing ahead. The same faceless people stands frozen mid-walk. "If we're not careful, those people will know we're here," Kai states. "They don't seem to be a threat," Duke replies. Lisa turns to face Duke. "Not now, but monsters come from them. If they're not now, they will be." Kai motions for the rest of the group to duck down behind a car. Duke looks up to see the person in the car slow turns its head his way. He screams and fires at the window. The glass shatters. Whisps of smoke leak out of the people. Kai screams at them to run. [[Run.]]

Duke sees two pathways. One is a tall building with signs out front and a large parking lot to its left. It's filled with empty cars. There's a dark alley next to the building. [[Run through the parking lot.]] [[Run through the dark alley.]] [[Run into the building.]]

Despite the daylight around Duke, the alleyway is pitch black. Duke runs through it. Kai and the group follow. They reach the other side without incident. [[Walk.]]

Duke runs towards the building. "Wait," Kai yells after him. The building has white floors and pink walls. There are cases with purfume bottles scattered around the room. It's crowded and all the faceless people turn towards the group in unison. "That's creepy," Duke states. [[Hit one of the people.]] [[Go behind one of the counters to sneak by the crowd.]] [[Go through the crowd.]]

Duke hits a person. It falls. Whisps of smoke come out from around the person to form a monster. The monsters start appearing a rapid pace. [[Shoot it.]]

Duke croutches and ducks behind the counter. Duke's eyes are wide. The group follows. A bead of sweat runs down Glenns face. Lisa bites her lip. Kai, however, is stone faced. Duke looks up to see smoke starting to seap out of the faceless people. He gulps. The smoke gathers and starts to turn into a monster. The group goes through the crowd, sliding past most of the people with ease. Duke goes through the crowd, twisting his body so he doesn't touch any of the faceless people. Sweat drips down his forehead. As he pasts the last person, a tendril wraps itself around his arm. Duke screams, flails, and falls backwards. A monster appears and Lisa takes pulls out her sword and slices it in half. Duke gets up and brushes himself off, breathing heavy. He wipes sweat from his forehead and the group moves on. [[Start running.]]

Duke aims his gun at the faceless person. Kai's eyes widen and she lunges for the gun. The gun goes off and fires straight through the faceless' person head. A puff of smoke exploes out in every direction coating the whole department store. <audio src="Assets/gunshot.mp3"> The rest of your part says explicitive all at the same time. "Oh, fuck," Kai sighs. "Fuckkkkkk," Glenn says. "Whoopsie," Lisa says. [[Uh....]]

There's a terrible yowl the goes through the the store, shattering glass around the team. A sea of monsters instantly appears. Kai, Lisa, and Glenn give each other pointed looks and take off running. Duke follows, his hands shaking. He can still feel the yowl, as if the sound permitated his bones and made its home there. A group of esclators is up ahead. Behind them, are rows and rows of clothes. There are a few people on the escalators and the clothing shop looks empty. Duke follows them through the women's clothing section of the store. There are a few other people holding up pieces of clothing, or looking through the racks. The party rushes past. The sea of monsters follow, devouring the clothing racks. There are doors up ahead. [[Turn and shoot.]] [[Keep running.]]

Kai lets out a sigh. "Does that kid always have to be a rebel?"

Duke turns and fires a couple rounds into the monsters. A couple fall, but are just replaced with more of the blobs. "Don't stop moving," Kai growls. She grabs Duke collar and pulls him forward, as a monster lands where he was standing. He turns and runs after the group. Bright light shines through the doors ahead. [[Go through the door.]] [[Dive through the doors like an action hero, shooting monsters on the way down.]]

Duke dives through the doors, shooting his gun as he does so. Glass shatters around him and bullets fly through the doors, as well as the monsters. He lands on his side. There's the click of a gun as Duke runs out of ammo. Duke's body jerks as Kai grabs him by his shirt and phsyically drags him out of the store. The monsters hit the doors a moment later. Their tendrils reach for the group, making unhuman noises in frustration as they realize their prey has gotten away. Kai walks over to one of the cars and sits on the hood. She opens her backs and counts their supplies. "This isn't a fucking action movie. It's real life. You can and will die if you keep doing shit like that." Kai's voice is even and matter-a-fact. She doesn't look up from her bag. After a moment, Kai says, "We're almost there." The group continues walking. [[Walk.]]

There's a monster. [[Shoot the monster.]]

The monster is defeated. A group of esclators is up ahead. Behind them, are rows and rows of clothes. There are a few people on the escalators and the clothing shop looks empty. Kai and the others go around the escalators. [[Follow them.]]

Kai stands at the entrance to the alleyway. [[Go to Kai.]]

Kai raises an eyebrow as you go into the restaurant. "More places with people?" "We need food right?" Duke replies. [[Go into the restaurant]]

Kai walks into the Alleyway. There's a slight shimmer and she's gone. [[Follow Kai.]] [[Ask what just happened.]]

Duke goes into the alleyway deciding to see for himself what happens. It's a small store, it looks surprisingly human, depsite the non-human behind the counter. The thing behind the counter has no face, just empty eye sockets. Its arms are tendrils. It's skin is human color and it wears cloths. [[What the FUCK is that?]] [[Ask cashier questions.]] [[Look around.]]

"We're at the store now," Lisa says in her overly chipper tone. She runs into the portal. Glenn follows. [[Go into the portal.]]

"That's why happens when you stay in the Nether for too long," Kai explains. "Why do you think we want to get out of here so badly?" Duke's eyes widen. [[Walk back to the cashier.]]

Duke walks up to the shopkeeper. [[Who are you?]] [[You run this store?]] [[Why are you here?]] [[Leave.]]

Duke browses the eyeless man's items. Potion: 20 coins Ammo (20): 30 coins. [[Buy a potion.]] [[Buy some ammo.]]

Duke looks around the shop. There's food supplies, ammo, weapons, tents, Anything that you could need to survive here. [[Walk back to the cashier.]]

The place where its mouth should be moves. "Yes." [[Why do you run the store?]] [[Do you like running the store?]] (set: $choiceB to true)

Its mouth is covered in flesh. It moves as the shopkeeper talks. "I run the store." [[Ask cashier questions.]]

It mouth was here, but its gone now. A think dip in the flesh remains and it moves as it talks. "I don't remember." [[Ask cashier questions.]]

"It's my job." [[Ask cashier questions.]]

The restraunt is decorded with simple, pastel colors. There are little statues of cute farm animals everywhere. There are a few patrons scattered around. One man sits alone in a booth, coffee cup at his lips. The waitress stands in front of a table where a couple sits. She's frozen in the middle of putting plates down on the table. [[Take a plate.]] [[Go to the kitchen.]]

Duke sneaks behind the waitress and grabs a plate with his hand. Got a plate of food. +1 plate of food. [[Go to the kitchen.]] [[Go outside.]]

The chef is standing at the stove. His holds a spatula. There are burgers on the grill. Next to the grill, there's a plate with burger and fries. [[Raid the fridge.]] [[Go to the stove.]]

The fridge makes a loud creek when it opens. The chef is right in front of you when he closes the door. [[Fight a Monster.]]

Duke sneaks over to the stove. [[Grab the burger.]]

+1 burger. [[Raid the fridge.]] [[Go outside.]]

[[Hit the monster.]]

Duke wins. [[Go outside.]]

"I don't feel anything, so I don't like or dislike things." [[Why do you run the store?]]

"Alright, enough of the pleasantries," Kai says. "Choose a weapon." [[Pick weapon.]]

If Duke takes the sword, he won't have to worry about running out of ammo. He'll have to get closer to the monsters to attack, so he'll take more damage. If Duke takes the big gun, he won't be as sneaky, so more monsters will notice and attack him. He will do more damage to enemies, though. Uses ammo. If Duke takes the gun, he'll be sneaky, but he'll do less damage to enemies. Uses ammo. [[Take sword.]] [[Take shotgun.]] [[Take handgun.]]

"We got shit to do. It can wait." Kai replies. [[Pick weapon.]]

Duke runs past the monster. It reaches for him with a tendril, but Duke runs past it. It chases after Duke, but Lisa runs past it and stabs it with her sword. The group makes it out of the parking lot.

Kai calls the group back to her. "Alright guys. Finish up looking around. We've got what we came for." Kai says, as she walks up to the counter. She sets a bunch of supplies down. "Mission accomplished?" Glenn asked. Kai nodds. "We got what we came for." "Yay!" Lisa shouts as she throws her arms up in the air. "Let's go home."
