They shift their balance from one leg to the other. “Hey. Can you hear me? Winter freeze your ears off?”\n\n[["…"|bar1c]]
"Fine." They take the cup and drain it themselves. "You do you." They stare at you, silently, chewing with a passive expression. "Let me know if you end up wanting something. Or, don’t, I guess." They pick up the empty cup, take another drink from their bottle, and [[disappear|bar1s1]] behind the shelf of drinks. <<set $alc = "no">>
Ko and Mekki are sitting at the bar along with some other residents of Hub. Most are wordlessly sipping their steaming drinks at the counter. A few others are sitting here and there at the other tables in quiet conversation.\n\nKo and Mekki had kept a seat reserved for you. "Hey," the barkeep says as you sit down beside the pair. "I got some lunch for you: hot redroot soup." They slide a metal mug over to you and pour the chunky soup into it. "Use the handle when you lift it up." It looks like everyone at the bar here is drinking the same thing.\n\n[["..."|bar3a]]
"Damn, it’s tough talking to people who don’t… talk. How the hell should I know what you want?" They slam the cup down and cross their arms. "Well, this is alcohol. Drink it or not, whatever." \n\n[["…"|bar1e]]\n[[[Sip]|bar1fv1]]

They take a big swig from their bottle as they disappear behind the shelf.\n\nYou finish your drink. The Home Soup warms your veins and relaxes your tensed muscles. It is filling.\n\nOther than the door that took you here, there's another [[unlabeled door|hh1]] to the side of the room. The box you're sitting on is [[surprisingly comfortable|bar1s1]] thanks to the warm vent in the counter.
"Even if you can’t talk, you gotta have something to trade. I know you can hear me. What’s underneath all that cloth, huh?"\n\n[["…"|bar1fv4]]

It’s a long walk. Every shuffling step kicks up a blast of snow which is quickly carried away by the wind. The passage of time is difficult to track. The only indication of change at all is the shape on the horizon slowly growing [[closer|c1]] as you walk.
Mekki says, "Take your time! We're going to get our supplies, then you can meet us at Transport once you're finished lunch." Ko and Mekki wave their thanks to the barkeep and leave you to your redroot soup. You take a sip. It is somewhat tart.\n\nThe barkeep, leaning on the counter, says to you: "You know, during the day, I keep wishing it's night so I can just relax. But when it's night, I wish it was day so I'd be kept busy." They sip their bottle. "Well, hell if I know what I want, huh?"\n\nAnother patron calls the barkeep away, leaving you to finish off the soup alone. By the time you finish, most of the other patrons are gone.\n\nMekki and Ko are waiting for you at [[Transport|t2]].
Mekki yawns, stretching her arms above her head. Her eyes are still a little puffy from the night before. "Stranger says, 'Thanks, friend.'" The barkeep does a small bow and steps away.\n\nKo and Mekki had already finished their soups. "You were sleeping for a while," says Ko. "Jek was worried you died because you sleep so still. Well, you didn't die, which is good." She scratches her arm. "Anyway, you still interested in taking a job?"\n\nMekki says, "I have a few more details about being a Trader that might influence your decision. Um, you're going to be around a lot of people. Luckily, you don't have to talk -- all that's really necessary is that you show trades. Sometimes, we have to harvest the trades ourselves -- but that means we're free to keep what we can take. Oh, and you'll also get to meet some interesting people... did I already say that?"\n\nKo says, "As an engineer you'll be alone for long periods of time. We gotta travel out to the coreline generators but the paths aren't safe. I'll teach you what I know once we're there. And once you got a handle on things, you'll have to help do the busywork while i figure things out."\n\n[["..."|bar3b]]
You stand up.\n\nThe snow-covered plains stretch out equally empty in most directions, though a small dark shape rests on the horizon. \n\nBeside you is a neatly folded heap of cloth and a pair of large boots. It takes a moment to pull the cloth apart. It unfolds into a set of grey robes. \n\nYou step into the boots and force yourself into the cold cloth robes. It's just large enough to fit on your body, but while it shields you from the wind, the chilled cloth itself numbs your skin. You better [[find shelter|fs1]] before you freeze.

<<if $tv is "no">>This impressively large room's mechanical churning, rather than muffled noises beyond the walls, is quite clear and visible. The glass floor allows you to see an indecipherable and noisy mess of machinery just beneath your feet. The room is brightly lit by large arrays of electric bulbs covering each wall. There's also a few iron benches and several large labeled arches along the back wall, with a set of tracks underneath each arch:\n\n"MINES"\n"BEACH"\n"LAND"\n"CHAPEL"\n\nTraleads to blackened, unlit tunnels with no visible end.\n\n<<endif>>Several different individuals populate the main Transport room, most with large bags slung across their backs. Some are sitting while others stand by the different archways, shuffling impatiently.\n\nYou find Mekki and Ko between the BEACH and LAND archways. Mekki stands with two bulky satchels at her feet, her arms crossed, while Ko ties her substantial hair up into a bun. Ko uses a plant stem to hold Mekki's hair in place. "...I don't want to talk to him again," Mekki is saying. "I don't plan on even making eye contacat with the creep."\n\n"Please beat him up if he tries anything," says Ko.\n\nMekki replies, "Oh, [[I will|t2aa]]."
You carry the satchel into the transport while Mekki and Zhola exchange goodbyes. She climbs in after you moments before the platform lowers and shuts the glass roof. \n\nMekki yawns. "Um, I'm going to nap for a while. I didn't get much sleep last night... I'll tell you more about trading once I wake up, though!"\n\nWith the hissing of steam and grinding of metal, the transport slowly picks up speed down the tunnel. Before long, the distant archway of Hub fades into darkness.\n\n[[[End of Part 1]|end]]
While it is not snowing outside, the bitter wind cuts across your face and numbs your skin. The sky is a pale grey, showing signs of early evening. Blank snowy plains reach out in all directions. \n\n[[[Back]|o1]]<<silently>><<set $went_outside_once = "yes">><<endsilently>>
This room is well-lit. It's only slightly warmer in here than outside. The mechanical grinding sound is louder in here and comes from the floor as well. Soon after, a bell on the transport starts to ring. As it does so, the platform to the transport lowers with a low rumble. Ko reaches upwards at the hatch and, with a grunt, heaves the glass roof down over your heads where it snaps shut. You sit down on one of the metal boxes. There seems to be a steam vent in front of the counter. Its warm air revives your frozen shins. There’s a new sound amidst the constant grinding — footsteps from behind the shelf. An individual emerges from behind the shelf with a half-full bottle in hand.\n\nTheir short hair juts out in haphazard directions and ink covers one half of their body in jagged lines and dots. They’re chewing on something.\n\n"Hey."\n\n[["…"|bar1a]]<<set $barv = 1>>
This is an unremarkable hallway with a single door at the end. The interior doors seem to open [[much easier|hh1a]] than the exterior one.
Mekki and Ko are sitting at the bar and talking in between sips. "... He always said the best way to mourn is to keep on living," Ko is saying to Mekki. "So we'll live for him too, now." Ko stretches while waiting for the transport to roll into view. Mekki cover her ears until the sound dies down.\n\nThe transport is a relatively small machine with a glass roof. There's enough room for a small family to sit inside, but not comfortably. The machine looks well-used; aside from numerous scratch marks on the glass, the metal looks nearly as worn as the outer walls of Hub itself. \n\nWhen the transport stops at the edge of the track, somebody within heaves the glass roof open. The sole passenger of the transport has short, jagged hair and a hefty bag in one arm. Ko holds onto the bag while they climb out of the transport. They seem to be chewing on something. "Hey," they say. \n\n"Hi Kalang, Mekki says, "Are you here to see your sibling?"\n\nKo passes the bag back to Kalang and picks up her own heavy satchel, slinging it over her shoulder. "Kit's using your redroot soup recipe. Actually made it this morning."\n\nKalang laughs. "Probably not as good as big brother's. I'm sure it was a good effort, though." He grins. "Well, I'd love to chat, but I'm about to pass out. And I don't want you to miss your transport so I'll catch you all later."\n\nAs Kalang waves his goodbyes and shuffles out of Transport, Ko heaves her satchel into the transport. "This is it," she says, leaning against the transport. "[[Engineer|e]] or [[trader|t]]? Engineer transport's leaving now, so climb in if you want."
You stand up after a time. There’s a door that will take you [[back|o`]] to where you came from, and another [[unlabeled door|hh1]] to the side of the room. \n\nNothing in this building thus far yields any hints as to how, or why, you arrived in this snowy wasteland.
You climb into the transport. Ko grins and says, “Alright. I got enough supplies for both of us.” \n\nMekki steps onto her toes to hug Ko. “Be safe, Ko!”\n\nKo replies, “You be safe!”\n\nKo climbs into the transport beside you. Nobody else seems to be going the same way as you two, allowing you ample legroom and space for your supplies.\n\nA bell on the transport starts to ring. As it does so, the platform to the transport lowers with a low rumble. Ko reaches upwards at the hatch and, with a grunt, heaves the glass roof down over your heads where it snaps shut. Hissing sounds come from all directions, and steam spraying out from the transport accompanies its slow acceleration. Ko nods at a waving Mekki before the two of you disappear into the tunnel. A clunky grinding sound under your seat loops faster and faster as you speed away from Hub unti it becomes a constant buzz. \n\n“Here we go,” says Ko.\n\n[[[End of Part 1]|end]]<<set $j = "e">>
The dark shape is a large metal building. It stands alone in the snowy wasteland, the only darkness amidst the white and grey of its surroundings.\n\nYou hear mechanical grinding beyond the dark walls as you approach. There is a door. It is large and metal like the rest of the building, and has a thick bar protruding from its surface. The bar looks capable of sliding across, so you press both hands onto the frozen steel and push. After a moment of struggle, the lock snaps across with a loud clang. \n\nYou push the door [[open|o1]].\n
You stand with the others in a circle around the fire. The others bow their heads, so you do the same.\nNobody speaks.\n\n[[Time passes|hh1h]].
Mekki shakes her head, saying, “If only you could speak... Are you sure you can’t? I need to calculate how long he has been gone, I need to ascertain the cause of… Ugh, there is just so much we need to know! We need to find a way to—”\n\nKo glances at Mekki. Mekki pauses, then lowers her head. “…Sorry. It’s been rough, recently.”\n\nThe singers by the fire stand up. "Gekim?" says one of the singers. "Is he really...?"\n\n"I'm afraid so," Jek replies. He steps to the fire in the center of the room along with Mekki and Ko. Jek beckons you over, saying, "We say our [[goodbyes|hh1g]] while the pain remains fresh."
Ko curls her hands into fists and steps towards you, but Mekki's hand on Ko’s arm stops her in place.\n\nMekki says, “Ko, look at these robes. There’s no rips or stains. And you can see the fold marks…” she points at the creases of your robe. “…including here, and here. You know how our cloth works.” She looks up at her friend. “…Ko, Gokim must have had his robe folded like that for days.”\n\nThe three of them pause. Ko looks down at Mekki, face impassive. “So he was…”\n\nJek bows his head. “…[[Waiting for Spring|hh1f]].”\n\nThe singing by the fire stops.
Jek says, “Mekki said her traders should be back in about two days. Should have more than enough to last us until then.”\n\nThe short one nods, then turns to you. “Hi, by the way! I’m Mekki, Hub’s trade co-ordinator. The big one with dark hair is Ko. She’s our engineer. And you met Jek already. He keeps the people of Hub together.” She tilts her head. “But who are you? "Well… I’ll take that as a no. Welcome home, anyway." He gives a brief smile before turning and walking back to his conversation. He gestures you over, so you follow him into the conversation.\n\n"…’s a shame we can’t visit the core," says a tall and wide person, thick hair tied up in a ponytail. "Lots of energy. I bet lots of secrets too."\n\nJek shrugs. “Dunno, our coreline is energy enough to run all of Hub. Secrets, though... you never know.”\n\nA short and slender individual, their light hair falling past the waist, says, “But we don’t know if there’s anything at all down there. We only really know there's lots of heat — but nothing's really certain.”\n\nThe tall one nods. “I like to dream. Still hate relying on trades to get our food. "Aw, you’re not deaf, are you?" He squints at you. "…No, I don’t think so. Can you speak?"\n\n[["..."|hh1c]]
This square room is much larger than the bar. A complex-looking device whirs in a pit in the center of the room, generating a moderate flame. Around the perimeter of the room, thin metal walls jut out from the floor. The walls divide the room into what looks like different sleeping areas. \n\nAbout twenty people populate this room; some sleeping, some sitting and singing into the fire, and some in animated conversation with each other.
