Andromeda Prologue

The //Osiris// comes out of warp. Streaks of light trail behind from the mass effect relay. The ship drifts idly through space. [[Inside Osiris]]

The crew of the Osiris is tapping away furious at their control panels. The ship is full of lights and people running back and forth. One of them runs up from the crew pit up the bridge. COMMANDER SIF is looking over the galaxy map as the crew member approaches. [[Commander Sif]]

Sif is a tall, fit looking woman with shoulder length black hair tied back behind her head. She’s wearing a standard commander’s uniform. There’s an emblem on her shoulder indicating she’s part of the Andromeda Protection Force. [[The crew member salutes her]]

CREW MEMBER (respectfully) We’re coming up on the planet Freya now, Commander. Sif looks up from the galaxy map and turns to her crew member. She nods curtly. SIF (plain expression, this is simply part of the job) Good. Set a patrol course around the planet. [[She steps over to address the rest of the crew]]

SIF (telling everyone what they already know, but trying to make light of it) Settle in guys. We’re going to be here for a while. An alarm beeps on the console. [[The crewman nearest goes over and checks the message]]

CREW MEMBER 2 (alarmed) We’re getting a distress call from the planet’s surface, Commander. Sif immediately runs back to the galaxy map. SIF (in battle mode) Send it to my console. [[The crew member types on their console]]

The galaxy map disappears and a woman appears in holographic form. MINING CAPTAIN (greatly distressed) Thank God you’ve arrived. We’ve been sending distress signals for the past few hours! Sif looks confused. SIF (suspicious) We never received any distress signals. We’re just a normal patrol ship. [[Continue]]

MINING CAPTAIN (freaking out) I don’t care, I’m just glad you’re here! Sif takes a deep breath. SIF Tell me what happened. [[The Mining Captain looks behind her at something beyond the hologram]]

MINING CAPTAIN (trying to contain her panic) There was an explosion. The crew saw something they thought was a human. So they dug deeper than they should have. Now most of our equipment is fried and we can’t get inside to see what happened. Sif nods. SIF (mentally preparing) Alright. We’ll be there shortly. Keep the rest of your people away from the mine’s entrance and seal the area until we arrive. The Mining Captain tries to calm down. [[She nods silently and the call disconnects]]

Sif looks over at the crew pit. SIF Ready a shuttle. And ready the away team. CREW Aye, Commander! [[Sif runs towards the elevator]]

INT. OSIRIS LOADING BAY The elevator door opens and Sif comes out. The loading bay is full of shuttles and cargo supplies. Four of the crew stand near the shuttle. They’re the party members the player starts with. From left to right we have THOMAS FERRIS – a human soldier in his early 30’s. He holds his gun close to him, like he’s afraid something might come after him if it leaves his side. Next is ZINI CHUL – a female a Turian warrior. Her armor is torn up with the scars of battle that she couldn’t be more proud of. She greets the Commander with a smile. Beside Zini is DRAX, a large Krogan female. Her scales are a deep red and orange, giving the illusion that she radiates flame. She nods to the Commander. Lastly is XI-TAO, a Selco. The Selco are a species native to the Andromeda galaxy. The closest way to describe them would be bi-pedal insects. Kind of like mantises but with smaller eyes and no mandibles. He salutes Sif. [[Continue|Continue1]]

SIF (to Zini) It’s good to see you again, Zini. She looks to the rest of them. SIF Drax, Thomas, Xi, pleasure. I know you three have just been stationed on the Osiris. I’m sorry this has to be your introduction to how things work. Drax shakes her head. DRAX It’s of no consequence, Commander. I’ve been stationed on other ships before. [[Sif nods with approval]]

SIF Noted. XI Any trial is welcome, for we shall learn all we can from it. Sif’s eyes narrow at Xi. She steps in front of him. SIF That’s right. You all have the hive mind thing going on. Xi smiles as well as it can. XI Close. We’re all connected, but only for the sharing of knowledge. Otherwise we are all allowed to be ourselves. SIF (understanding) Good to know. [[She moves over to Thomas]]

SIF And you? Thomas holds his weapon closer to him. THOMAS (shakily) I’m ready for anything. Sif gives him a look as if she doesn’t exactly believe him. SIF (looking at his weapon) You can handle that? Thomas takes in a deep breath. THOMAS I’ll do what I have to. Her eyes narrow again. [[But she moves on]]

SIF Alright! Let’s gear up! **Now is the time for the player to choose two additional party members:** First choice: [[Thomas Ferris – Assault Rifle]] [[Zini Chul – Sniper Rifle]] [[Drax – Shotgun & Melee]] [[Xi-Tao – Bionics]]

EXT. FREYA MINING PLATFORM – DAY The shuttle comes down just outside the mining platform. Sif and the party members exit the shuttle. **The player would take control of Sif here. They’d be allowed to explore the landing pad and learn the basic movement controls. When ready the player could move towards the mining entrance.** [[Move to the mining entrance|entrance1]]

Sif approaches the Mining Captain, who has been standing guard near the entrance. MINING CAPTAIN (relieved) Oh you’re here! Thank the gods! SIF (all business) Has anything changed? The mining captain shakes her head. MINING CAPTAIN Not that we know of. We’ve lost all communications with the miners inside. We don’t know what’s going on with them. SIF [[Has anyone tried coming out?|dialogue1]] [[Is there anything else you can tell us?|dialogue2]] [[Alright, we’ll take it from here.|dialogue3]]

MINING CAPTAIN (fearful) I’ve heard something that sounds like screaming inside there. I’m just hoping it’s whirling robots or something. I really don’t want it to be the miners… [[Has anyone tried coming out?|dialogue1]] [[Alright, we’ll take it from here.|dialogue3]]

MINING CAPTAIN Great. What should I do? SIF [[Stay here and make sure no one follows us.|dialogue4]] [[Your job is done here. Try and get out as fast as you can.|dialogue5]]

MINING CAPTAIN (disappointed) Alright. I’ll do what I can. The mining captain remains where she is. The door to the mine opens. Sif and company head inside. [[The Mines]]

MINING CAPTAIN Thank you. Good luck to you in there. The mining captain runs off past Sif. The door to the mine opens. Sif and company head inside. [[The Mines]]

INT. MINES – DAY There are definitely human screams coming from further down the mines. SIF Weapons ready. Everyone goes into combat mode. **The player would receive a brief combat tutorial here** [[The party continues down the tunnel.|tunnel1]]

Sif and the others continue down the tunnel, looking for anything suspicious. THOMAS Is it a bit quiet for anyone else? DRAX The silence makes my scales shake. [[They turn the bend and go further down.|tunnel2]]

INT. MINES – DEEPER INSIDE The party turns the bend, coming up a more open area of the mines. Several equipment containers are stashed around the area. SIF Check around for any hints of the miners. A scream comes from the tunnel on the other side of the circle. Suddenly an INFECTED MINER comes running into the round area, shrieking. The miner’s equipment has been sealed to its skin with various wires and crude looking oil. Sif fires a shot from her rifle, bringing the miner down instantly. SIF Combat positions! [[Take Cover]]

Several more infected miners begin running into the room. **The player receives a brief tutorial on taking cover, shooting while in cover, and managing squad abilities** Once all the infected miners are dead, Sif and the party come out of cover. THOMAS (panicked) What was that? What happened to them? Why did they attack us? Sif walks over to one of the bodies and kneels down to take a closer look. We see that the miner has been transformed. DRAX Sad. They clearly weren’t themselves. I wonder if they had any knowledge of what they were doing. Sif sighs and stands back up. SIF We’ll have to take one of these bodies back for examination. (beat) Let’s make sure there aren’t any left. She pulls her gun back at the ready and [[continues down the tunnel.|space1]]

EXT. SPACE The Osiris continues to maintain orbit around Freya. A second ship of similar class comes out of warp. INT. OSIRIS The crew is going about their usual duties when one of the consoles lights up. CREW MEMBER We’re being hailed! The crew member presses a button on the console and CAPTAIN GROL – a male Krogan dressed in the same official kind of uniform Sif was – appears on screen. GROL Greetings. My name is Grol, Captain of the Ra’s Wing. Is your commander aboard? The crew member shakes their head. CREW MEMBER She’s down in the planet’s surface. We received a distress call from a mining platform. GROL Yes, that’s why I’m here. We’ve been receiving similar distress calls across the sector. I need to get in touch with your commander as soon as possible. CREW MEMBER The mines are making it tough to get comms through. There’s some kind of interference. If I can get through I’ll patch you through immediately. [[Continue|tunnel3]]

INT. MINES – EPICENTER Sif and the party comes through another tunnel to see a large crater before them. THOMAS My God… Sif holsters her weapon and takes a step forward. She peers over the edge to look down. The crater goes about fifteen feet down. It’s covered in the same crude oils and wiring that the infected miners were filled with. At the center of the crater is a YOUNG WOMAN. She looks to be in her young twenties. But she’s missing the skin over her left eye, revealing something cybernetic beneath. The wires are wrapped around and through her skin. Many are connected to her skull as well. YOUNG WOMAN Help me! The others join Sif at the edge of the crater. THOMAS Holy shit! He lifts his weapon and takes aim. [[Sif puts a hand out.|tunnel4]]

SIF Wait! She looks back over the crater. SIF (continued) Are you alright? What happened? The young woman’s eyes dart around in fear and nonunderstanding. YOUNG WOMAN (confused/afraid) I don’t know. I just woke up like this. There was an explosion or something and I just came to. SIF Do you know what happened to the miners? YOUNG WOMAN No! I have no idea! Please help me! I don’t want to be here anymore! SIF It’s okay, we’ll get you out. THOMAS Are you insane? Did you see what she did to the miners? What if she infects us as well? DRAX There’s no way to know that she did it on purpose. She’s clearly very scared. We need to take care of her. THOMAS I don’t care! I don’t want to take the risk. She could bring down the whole ship. DRAX Just look at her. She’s just a child. She needs our help. THOMAS You’re insane. SIF [[Enough!|choices1]]

Sif looks over at the young woman. Her eyes continue to dart around. She struggles against the wiring a bit. SIF [[We’re taking her with us.|choice1]] [[She’s too dangerous.|choice2]]

Sif takes out her pistol and fires a few shots. Each of them snaps the wiring that’s holds the young woman the crater’s wall. The young woman screams briefly before dropping to the ground. Sif holsters the gun and slides down the dirt. She crouches down and lifts the woman into her arms and over her shoulders. YOUNG WOMAN Thank you… She then passes out. Sif reaches up for a helping hand. Drax holsters her weapon and helps bring Sif over the crater wall. THOMAS This is a bad idea… SIF Your concern is noted. Come on, we need to get back to the ship. Sif walks off camera. The other party members follow behind her. [[FADE OUT.|end]]

Sif takes out her pistol and aims at the young woman’s head. Her finger edges against the trigger. Before she can fire there’s a beeping noise on her omnitool. She’s receiving a comm message. Confused, she answers the call. Captain Grol’s holographic form appears in a miniature on her arm. GROL Commander Sif. I’m glad I could reach you. Have you reached the crater? SIF Who are you? GROL Excuse me. I’m Captain Grol. We just came from a similar incident over at Set. I have orders from on high I need to relay to you. Sif doesn’t move her pistol away from the young woman. SIF Go ahead. GROL If you’ve reached the crater, the epicenter of the explosion, then you’ve no doubt encountered a young human, no? Sif nods. GROL We need you to bring them onboard your ship. The Jarls want them collected. SIF You’re sure? GROL We’ve got ours onboard already. A young boy. Poor chap had no idea what had happened to him. Sif sighs. SIF Very well. GROL Good. We’ll rendezvous back at the High Temple. Grol out. The hologram disappears. Sif fires a few shots down at the wiring. The girl screams and falls unconscious as she hits the ground. Sif holsters the gun and slides down the dirt. She crouches down and lifts the woman into her arms and over her shoulders. Sif reaches up for a helping hand. Drax holsters her weapon and helps bring Sif over the crater wall. Sif walks off camera. The other party members follow behind her. [[FADE OUT.|end]]

ZINI We need to be careful. It’s possible that if they touch us we’ll get infected too. We should shoot on sight. Sif sighs and stands back up. SIF We’ll have to take one of these bodies back for examination. (beat) Let’s make sure there aren’t any left. She pulls her gun back at the ready and [[continues down the tunnel.|space2]]

SIF Wait! She looks back over the crater. SIF (continued) Are you alright? What happened? The young woman’s eyes dart around in fear and nonunderstanding. YOUNG WOMAN (confused/afraid) I don’t know. We have to be careful about possible infections. We don’t have the slightest clue what she is. THOMAS Exactly. We should go back and get some equipment to examine her. ZINI I advise caution as well, Commander. SIF [[We don’t have time for that.|choices2]]

SIF Wait! She looks back over the crater. SIF (continued) Are you alright? What happened? The young woman’s eyes dart around in fear and nonunderstanding. YOUNG WOMAN (confused/afraid) I don’t know. That would require careful analysis. THOMAS And you want to take that risk? XI There’s no need to jump to conclusions. She needs help. THOMAS I don’t want her killing everyone on the ship. XI You can’t know that’s what she’ll do. We should leave it for the Commander to decide. [[Sif looks over at the young woman.|choices3]]

The young woman's eyes continue to dart around. She struggles against the wiring a bit. SIF [[We’re taking her with us.|choice5]] [[She’s too dangerous.|choice6]]

Sif and the others continue down the tunnel, looking for anything suspicious. ZINI It’s too quiet here. I don’t like it. DRAX The silence is quite suspicious. We should be hearing cries for help. [[They turn the bend and go further down.|tunnel14]]

Several more infected miners begin running into the room. **The player receives a brief tutorial on taking cover, shooting while in cover, and managing squad abilities** Once all the infected miners are dead, Sif and the party come out of cover. ZINI Well that was unexpected. Guess we know what happened to the miners. Sif walks over to one of the bodies and kneels down to take a closer look. We see that the miner has been transformed. DRAX These miners are no longer themselves. I hope they died peacefully. Sif sighs and stands back up. SIF We’ll have to take one of these bodies back for examination. (beat) Let’s make sure there aren’t any left. She pulls her gun back at the ready and [[continues down the tunnel.|space4]]

INT. MINES – EPICENTER Sif and the party comes through another tunnel to see a large crater before them. ZINI What caused all this…? Sif holsters her weapon and takes a step forward. She peers over the edge to look down. The crater goes about fifteen feet down. It’s covered in the same crude oils and wiring that the infected miners were filled with. At the center of the crater is a YOUNG WOMAN. She looks to be in her young twenties. But she’s missing the skin over her left eye, revealing something cybernetic beneath. The wires are wrapped around and through her skin. Many are connected to her skull as well. YOUNG WOMAN Help me! The others join Sif at the edge of the crater. ZINI Enemy in sight! She lifts his weapon and takes aim. [[Sif puts a hand out.|tunnel16]]

SIF Wait! She looks back over the crater. SIF (continued) Are you alright? What happened? The young woman’s eyes dart around in fear and nonunderstanding. YOUNG WOMAN (confused/afraid) I don’t know. I just woke up like this. There was an explosion or something and I just came to. SIF Do you know what happened to the miners? YOUNG WOMAN No! I have no idea! Please help me! I don’t want to be here anymore! SIF It’s okay, we’ll get you out. ZINI Sif, I wouldn’t do that if I were you. She clearly caused all the miner’s infection. What if she continues to infect things? DRAX There’s no way to know that she did it on purpose. She’s clearly very scared. We need to take care of her. ZINI I’m not still not sure we should take the risk. We could infect the whole crew. If we do that, how will we contain it? Be careful, Commander. DRAX We have containment cells on the shuttle. I’m sure we can keep her under control. SIF [[I've got this.|choices4]]

Sif takes out her pistol and fires a few shots. Each of them snaps the wiring that’s holds the young woman the crater’s wall. The young woman screams briefly before dropping to the ground. Sif holsters the gun and slides down the dirt. She crouches down and lifts the woman into her arms and over her shoulders. YOUNG WOMAN Thank you… She then passes out. Sif reaches up for a helping hand. Zini holsters her weapon and helps bring Sif over the crater wall. Sif walks off camera. The other party members follow behind her. [[FADE OUT.|end]]

Confused, she answers the call. Captain Grol’s holographic form appears in a miniature on her arm. GROL Commander Sif. I’m glad I could reach you. Have you reached the crater? SIF Who are you? GROL Excuse me. I’m Captain Grol. We just came from a similar incident over at Set. I have orders from on high I need to relay to you. Sif doesn’t move her pistol away from the young woman. SIF Go ahead. GROL If you’ve reached the crater, the epicenter of the explosion, then you’ve no doubt encountered a young human, no? Sif nods. GROL We need you to bring them onboard your ship. The Jarls want them collected. SIF You’re sure? GROL We’ve got ours onboard already. A young boy. Poor chap had no idea what had happened to him. Sif sighs. SIF Very well. GROL Good. We’ll rendezvous back at the High Temple. Grol out. The hologram disappears. Sif fires a few shots down at the wiring. The girl screams and falls unconscious as she hits the ground.
