Welcome to the 5th Grade Science Living Website on Matter!
We've got a bunch of different projects to show you, so come on in!
Why don't you start by clicking here [[Here->Matter]]?Clicking any of the links below will take you to an introductory 'webpage', which will also direct you to where to find the physical station with more information!
Happy Surfing!

[[Crystals]]
[[Quarks]] Go see Ida to learn about the periodic table.
The periodic table is a way of listing elements. The elements, such as [[Carbon]], are listed in order of their atomic number which is the number of protons in each [[Atom->Atoms]].
Scarlett will tell you more about Atoms! She has the table in the middle of the room!
Atoms are the builiding blocks of matter! Nature's 94 kinds of atoms combine in many ways to form many different kinds
of [[Matter]], in structures like [[Crystals]] or [[fluids->Non-Newtonian Fluids]]. Scientists have identifed 10 millon combinations.
Go see Guinness and Jane-Claire to learn more about fire!!!
Q:is fire a solid,liquid or gas?
A:actually fire is a chemical reaction, an oxidation reaction. when wood gets warm enough, the large hydrocarbons break down to solids.Fire mainly consists of [[Carbon]], water vapor, oxygen, and nitrogen ore elements, on the [[Periodic Table]], so click on these to see Ida!Find Noah or Maki at the chalkboard to see the Radioactivity Poster!
Radioactive decay is the spontaneous transformation of an unstable atomic nucleus. A nucleus is made out of protons, neutrons (and that's made out of [[Quarks]]) as a nuclues decays into a lighter one, it emits beta particles, gamma rays and other particles. A nucleus is part of an [[Atom->Atoms]]. Welcome to the Carbon Station with Axel!
Carbon is the "King of Elements!" It can form around 10 million compounds - ranging from one the hardest surfaces ([[Diamond->Crystals]]) to one of the softest (Graphite) and is even found in the human body! This makes humans known as a "Carbon-Based [[Life-Form->Living Matter]]" because it occupies about 18% of body mass. Go to Bridget and Tessa's Table to learn about Non-Newtonian Fluids!
Non-Newtonian fluids don't pour and can be ripped. They are sometimes solid and sometimes liquid.
Go to Shea and Abi's table to learn about [[Crystals]], which are the different structure of [[Matter]] than of Non-Newtonian Fluids. Crystals are minerals that form into a particular shape based on their chemical combination. You will see Shea and Abi with science cats on their poster!
Crystals are an interesting structure of [[Matter]] , to learn about a different structure of matter go check out Tessa and Bridget doing [[Non-Newtonian Fluids]]. Crystals are made of [[Atoms]] , to learn more about them go check out Scarlett doing Atoms. See EJ to learn more about Plasma!
Plasma is a state of [[Matter]]. The most commmon states of matter are Solid, Liquid, and Gas, that's why Plasma is called the 'Fourth State of Matter.' Plasma is formedby adding energy to a gas so that its [[Atoms->Atoms]] Seperate into negatively charged electrons and positively charged ions.Look for Willy or Hudson for the Dark Matter Station!
Dark matter is NOT a state of [[Matter]].....[[Matter]] or [[Atoms->Atoms]] being anything that takes up space, Unlike [[Carbon]] dark matter cannot be found on the [[Periodic Table]] to learn more about Dark matter go to the Dark matter poster!Adele and Bashert have the inside scoop on quarks, so find them to see their poster!
A Quark is a microscopic particle of [[Matter]], a fast moving point of energy. protons and neutrons are composed of two types of quarks: up and down. [[Atoms]]
are composted up of protons electrons and neutrons wich are made up of quarks. Go to Clio and Olivia's table to learn more about Living Matter!
What makes [[Matter]] living? The answer is living [[Matter]].[[Matter]] has to do certain things to be living.....for example, react to the environment. Come to olivia and clio's table to learn about living [[Matter]] and DNA!!! [[Carbon]], like DNA is the building block of life.
