You turn to page 16. @@.sans;<<if $kid_was_carrying == "stick">><<remember $big_mistake = 1>><<remember $used_fake_dagger = false>>yeah, i messed up. the kid was holding one of those little wooden toy knives you use to chop little wooden toy vegetables. after the last few humans, i thought i'd try giving the next one a scare before getting all buddy-buddy with them. play a little bad cop and good cop at the same time. kinda my thing, you know. but i really overdid it. right there, the knife slips from the kid's trembling hand. it landed in the snow alongside the first few tears, before the big sobs came. (no laugh. tough crowd.) i tried to win them over by saying they should drop by my house later, that i'd give them something good. i think i even saw a flash of curiousity play across their blank expression. i know that seems crazy to you, diary, but hey, i thought it was worth trying to make friends. anyway, you know what they say about keeping your friends close. You turn to page 21.<<remember $genocide_possible = false>> @@.sans;<<if $kid_was_carrying == "stick">><<if not $has_fake_dagger>>thankfully, no, i didn't scare the kid that badly. they looked me straight in the eye(socket) and took my hand. my palm whoopie cushion did its job. with the sound of an embarrassing fart echoing away through the trees, i was firmly in my element. long story short, diary, i managed to invite the kid over for a snack later. good to see the kid's got //guts//. they'll need 'em. <<else>><<remember $used_fake_dagger = true>>before i can move, the kid's arm lances out and drives the knife right into my sternum. my unlife flashes before my eyes, but there's no pain and the kid's just standing there with this goofy grin on their face. they withdraw the dagger and poke me a few more times with it, letting the blade extend from and retreat back into the hilt a few times. a fake! man, they got me good. that fake dagger of theirs... wait. no. not "theirs". that fake dagger of //mine//. what the hell? well. now things are getting interesting. <<endif>>[[Turn to page 27 to find out how things went in the kitchen|Kitchen Scene]]<<else>>Yeah, no, things looked bad for a second there, but turns out the kid wasn't actually looking to use that thing. Not that they actually would've been able to stick me with it anyway, not out of the blue like that. Well, anyway, after that awkward introduction, I ended up inviting them to stop by later. I figure it might be a good idea to keep an eyesocket on this kid. Haven't quite figured out how to judge them yet. <<remember $scene="kitchen">>You turn to page 27. @@.sans;<<if $kid_was_carrying == "stick">>right, so i'm going to skip ahead a bit. you'll have to get used to that sort of thing around me, diary. this happened right after i took you from the kitchen and put you in my room. i like hosting in the kitchen, it feels more personal. couldn't have the human reading you while i made them a snack, right? anyway, we get to talking a bit. they're still a bit shaken up a little bit about the whole... being trapped in a world of monsters who have a very good reason to kill you... but the nice cream is helping. <<if not $used_fake_dagger>><<if visited("A Big Mistake")>><<remember $has_fake_dagger = 1>>that's when i gave them my present. ah, when i showed them how it worked, you should've seen the look on the kid's face. i figure it's for the best if they have something they can wave around that can't actually hurt anyone. maybe if they had had it from the beginning... ...actually, that gives me an idea. excuse me for a minute, diary. <<endif>><<else>>once they'd settled in, i make sure to bring up that fake dagger of theirs. apparently it was sitting right in front of that mysterious door, practically gift-wrapped for them. well, you've figured it out, haven't you, diary? i got pranked! and there's only one person who can prank me. so. i'm curious now. but if that's all the kid can do, then they're still useless to me. gotta figure out whether this is a dead-end or not. <<endif>>anyway, it was right around then i realized i hadn't offered the kid tea. i forget sometimes what it's like. you know, having flesh. making the kid hang out in snowden and giving them nice cream would leave anyone chilled //to the bone//. (i didn't use that one at the time. it's a bonus, just for you, diary.) i asked if they wanted to wait for the tea to steep, or head out. <<remember $scene="living">>You turn to page 36. @@.sans;<<if $kid_was_carrying=="knife">>right, so i'm going to skip ahead a bit. you'll have to get used to that sort of thing around me, diary. this happened while you were sitting in the kitchen. i wasn't too worried about them sneaking a peek at you, since i wasn't about to let them into the kitchen anyway. that's where the knife drawer is, after all. so i'm sitting on the sofa and the kid is just standing there, staring at me. waiting for their "something good". alright. they're worth a shot: "hey, kid. listen. i know we just met, but i want to give you some advice." i look them dead in the eye. here we go. time to turn this thing around. time to get serious. i inhale through my teeth, enjoying that moment of vertigo before going over the precifice, before telling them: "you're short." a beat. nothing. still gotta soldier through it. "not just your height. you're short-tempered. you don't let anything get in your way. normally, that's something i admire in a person. but you? you're short-sighted, too. you're doing a great job of getting there, but you can't see where you're going." i flash the kid a grin. "me, i'm the opposite. i'm good at looking around. i'm good at looking a few steps ahead. i see what's there, what could be there." i pause. "what should be there. sometimes what you want is off the beaten path, you know?" i poke a digit into my bony palm and scratch its bones. "so, i write things down. i plan. i find the shortest path. sometimes it lets me get there ahead of everyone else." i shrug. "and sometimes it doesn't. in the end, i never manage to get much done. you know the feeling, right, kid? no matter how hard you work on something, you always end up right back where you started?" i sigh, and let my gaze fall to the floor. "anyway, my point is that... maybe i could afford to be a little more like you, huh? or maybe you should try to be a little more like me. because if i were you, i wouldn't be happy with where i was going. the problem with thinking you're above consequences..." i take a moment, gather my resolve. "...is not realizing just how hard you're gonna fall." i look up, curious to see what the kid's expression is going to be. blank. still blank. not even listening. damnit. i jerk my thumb over my shoulder, at the stairs. "as a prize for sitting through my speech, i've got something for you in my bedroom." the kid hesitates. "something powerful," i say. the kid jerks upright, and turns towards me completely. "that's right, really powerful. and i'm giving it to you. go on." the kid sprints past me. i sit back, enjoying the sound of frenzied footsteps slam up each step and then across the landing. reminds me of gyftrot morning. the footsteps arrive at my door, followed by the rattle of my doorknob. then more rattling. then slamming. i close my eyes, relishing the mental image of the little scamp throwing their weight against my door. not going to work, kid. a moment later, the sounds stop. i open my eyes to see the kid leaning over the balcony, their blank look gone, replaced by pure venom. it's exactly what i was expecting. it's precisely what i was hoping for. i shiver anyway. "oh, yeah. i locked the door. should've said something, huh?" i fish the golden key out of my hoodie, and dangle it enticingly on one finger. the kid reaches down, beckoning for me to toss it up. i shrug, and slip the key back in my pocket. "nah. i didn't lie, what's in my room is for you. not my fault if you can't get to it." i hear the sound of footsteps racing across the balcony, storming down the steps, descending two at a time, the sound of a knife being unsheathed. doesn't matter. by the time the kid reaches the floor, the couch is empty. i'm gone.

yeah, you guessed it, when i come back, the kid is still sitting where i left them, legs swinging back and forth in contentment, all smiles and innocence. gave me a warm fuzzy feeling, right in my rib cage. we passed most of the afternoon there, chatting, trading jokes, drinking hot tea and eating cold ice cream, watching the snow pile up on the windows. i gotta say, it's not what i was expecting when i first saw that human. everyone will tell you i'm easy to get along with, but even so, i was surprised i felt comfortable around this kid. it made me feel...<<remember $mysteryC = 1>> [[If it made me feel happy, turn to page 37|Happy Memory]] [[If it made me feel uneasy, turn to page 44|Uneasy Feeling]]

yeah, the kid told me they were going to wait for tea. well, that was alright by me. i like patient people. <<rollMystery>><<if $mysteryRoll>>@@.sansgaster;they remind me of something.@@<<endif>> i like the opportunity to just sit and watch the pot for the water to boil. you know what they say, about a watched pot never boiling? that's not true. <<rollMystery>><<if $mysteryRoll>>@@.sansgaster;...he taught me that.@@ <<endif>>i've tried to show papyrus, but these days it's all i can do just to keep him from dumping pasta in the tea kettle while it's still lukewarm. we actually spent the rest of the afternoon in that warm little kitchen, just wasting time and enjoying each other's company. i might have prattled on a bit, i'm afraid, telling them this or that about these monsters i know. maybe just to be friendly. maybe just to make things easier for everyone tomorrow. this human... they're a good kid, diary. but they're not who i've been waiting for.

so i'm coming back from the kitchen, still a little flustered, and what do i find the little scamp doing? going through the sofa cushions, looking for loose change! what a scoundrel! i think i like this kid. <<if not $couch_change>><<remember $couch_change to 1>>i cough to get their attention, and they drop the cushion they were rummaging under with a guilty expression. i walk right by to set the snacks on the table, explaining, "don't worry about it kiddo, but you won't find anything in there. it's only wednesday." the kid shoots me a puzzled look, so i explain, "i only plant spare change in the couch on friday, so papyrus has something to look forward to finding on saturday morning. it's a big deal to him, coming to me to tell me exactly how much treasure he's found." this earns me a giggle, which i eat up. yeah, it's a shame papyrus isn't here. i can just imagine the two of them rooting through the couch together, counting out their loot, figuring out exactly how much... ...would you excuse me for a moment, diary? i have to make a note of something. ...okay, i'm back. what's that, diary? you want to know what i was writing down? wow, that's so nosy!! but alright, but keep this between you and me: from now on, i'm going to hide change in the couch on tuesday evenings, too. keep it a secret, wouldya?<<else>>i watch silently from the kitchen doorway as the kid finishing fishing out the last few coins. i watch them count out their spoils. most people, they'd just jam the coins in their pocket right away, the better to avoid detection, right? not this kid. i knew it. they're curious. they look for hidden things. perfect. i wait until i'm sure the kid has found every last cent before i cough to interrupt. they turn, then calmly put back the cushion they were holding before walking over to offer me the change. i glance down at the coins in their hands. yup, seventy-seven cents exactly. curious //and// thorough. perfect. they thrust the coins towards me again, but i wave a dismissive hand at them. "nah, kid, keep it. that's what i get for leaving the couch unguarded, huh? anyway, i normally only plant the coins there to put a smile on papyrus's face, but his smile is fixed on his skull whether he likes it or not. why not try it on someone who has a choice?" ...speaking of choices. time to skip ahead a bit.<<endif>><<remember $mysteryD = 1>>

yeah, the kid wasn't in the mood to stick around. fair enough. i guess they had their big adventure ahead of them, huh? tough luck for me, but what you can do? so the kid hops down and heads back into the living room. on a hunch, i make sure to get there first. and i guessed right -- they turn and make a move to explore the rest of the house, only to find me sitting on the couch already. they startle a bit, equal parts guilt and confusion. "what, were you hoping to raid the couch cushions for spare change?" i shrug. "nah. that's not for you." the kid hesitates, still off-balance.
