For a while, this arrangement worked out rather well for everyone. The land was young and prosperous, and the inhabitants of all four lands flourished and grew beneath the trees, the sky, the sun, and the clouds. The four friends were happiest when they were with each other, and almost just as happy when they were apart, and it seemed that nothing could go wrong. And then, of course, things began to go wrong. The Maid of Spring, although lovely and bright, was also an inquisitive young thing, and loved nothing more than asking questions- the more invasive and piercing the better. And there was nobody that she loved asking questions of more than the sky, whose vast majesty was always a source of puzzlement and wonder to her. Although the sky enjoyed her company, the Maid asked the same questions often, and they were questions that it could not respond without repercussions. After a while, this line of questioning tired the sky, and it began to grow bitter. One day after a particularly rapid round of questioning, the sky told the Maid the answer she was seeking. It told her that the only way to find out what was at the centre of everything was to journey there herself. And the Maid, taking this to heart, packed up her belongings and said farewell to her friends and kingdom. Although they were worried, they knew that the only way that she would ever stop seeking answers was if she found them herself, and so they let her go. Before departing, the Maid removed her crown of flowers, and placed them upon the hill of green that she had created, and vowed she would return soon. A short while after the Maid's disappearance, the King of Summer had began to worry. His worries were many and varied - some rational, some not. His friends did their best to reassure him of these worries with soft words and kind thoughts, but the Prince, as clever as he sometimes appeared to sound, often did not know what he was talking about. And the Queen often cloaked her kindness in sharp wit and acerbic spite, and it was hard to trust what she said, more often than not. And so it was that he began to turn to others - inhabitants of his quarter that were, perhaps, more malicious than he had originally created them to be. One of these residents - a venomous adder that nobody could quite remember the origins of - became the King's new confidant. It whispered thoughts, honey-sweet and acidic, into the King's ear, and reassured him of all his worries. The King steadily became more and more withdrawn, talking less to his friends and spending his evenings in near-solitude with the snake twined along his arms and neck. The adder, as all adders are, cared only for the forces of chaos, and encouraged the King day-by-day to attempt riskier, wilder things to attract the awe of his friends - who, the snake assured him, didn't care as much as they appeared to. With two of his friends gone now, the Prince of Autumn was becoming more and more anxious about what was to come. The stars had informed him of another presence - a being, an Other - that was at that very moment travelling across the galaxy, consuming everything in its path. The stars knew that it was ancient and endless and unstoppable, and the sky knew that it was soon to come to the world that the Prince and his friends had created for their own, and once it did, everything would end, for the Other was the beginning and end of all things. The Prince knew that he himself was too weak to prevent what would happen when the Other would reach their world, and with the Maid and the King missing and presumed dead, the four rulers would not be able to stand together as one. He left his quarter of the kingdom, and crossed the lands to visit the Queen of Winter, but she would not show herself. Her servantss informed the Prince that she had hidden herself in her mountain for a great many days, performing hidden rituals and ceremonies to try to catch glimpses of where her missing friends might be. The Prince tried to contact her, but all in vain, because she was so very focused on her work that she couldn't tear herself away, and she did not hear of the Other's approach. And so it was left to the Prince of Autumn to protect his world, and to do so, he returned to the moon from which he had originally come from. He communed with the stars and the sky and after long amounts of discussion, he concluded that there was only one way out. He stood on the edge of the tower on the moon, and looked down at the world below him, and saw how beautiful it was, and looked up, and saw the void-black tentacles of the Other, visible even from so far away. And of course there was only one way to save everything, because every time an ephemeral dies, they become greater and more powerful even at the cost of that death. And the Prince and the stars and the sky knew that. He let out a final sigh, filled with many things - sadness, regret, hope for the future- - and let himself fall down, the millions of miles down, and down to the earth. While the Queen of Winter had seen the Prince's ploy for freedom, she did not know that it was such, and had only seen him fall to what she thought was his death. And so she descended from her mountain to reach his crumpled body, and carried him to the furthest corner of the land of Autumn, where his tomb was located. Carefully, she laid him on a marble slab, and said her goodbyes to him there, for he was the only one of her friends who had a body remaining to say goodbye to. And after hours of mourning had passed, she placed a kiss on her friend's cold cheek, and left him. She returned to her mountain, and there she sat, looking out upon her kingdom and the kingdoms of the three others. At first, it seemed as if the Prince and the Maid and the King had merely left their lands for a short while, because nothing visibly changed. But as time passed, the trees of the Prince's kingdom began to wilt and their ever-present leaves fell to the ground, leaving the branches bare and empty. The leaves withered to grey, and the warm winds of Autumn turned cold and biting. In the King of Summer's land, clouds swept across the sun as the sky mourned, and without the sun, the grass could not grow, and so the ground grew infertile and cracked at the edges. In the Maid of Spring's kingdom, the flowers turned grey and faded away, and a layer of frost crept slowly along the ground, making it impossible for them to ever return. And while all this was happening, the Queen sat, alone, upon her throne, growing colder and more distant. Citizens of the four lands came to talk to her- to beg her to do something, to help- but the frost had crept down her throat, warping her voice into something unrecognizable and monstrous. Days passed, and her skin grew grey with cold and her eyes grew blanker and blanker until she was nothing but a hunched, trembling mass, her crown of ice hanging crookedly over her eyes. And the Other came, sweeping across the lands with a pace and fury defiant, and destroying everything in its path. And still, the Queen did nothing. [[>|Room A]] <<set $diary4Seen to true>>

Finally, the Queen of Winter rose from her throne, skin frosted over and eyes like diamonds, and she stood over everything and stared at the Other, and she knew what was to be done. She drew two long daggers from the crusted mass of frost that was the ground, and took them in her hands, and left the earth and lands behind, never to return alive. She rose into the air as she walked, treading air like it was solid before her, and faced the Other that was threatening the broken land beneath them. It is known that she then spoke words of great power, but they were in the monstrous, cracked tongue that was all that she could speak, frozen as she was, and they have now been lost to time and space. And then they fought for a great many days, or months, or years. The Queen held her own with grace, but even the most skilled warriors will fall eventually, and her movements were slowed by the ice that still encased her mind and body. The Other caught the Queen of Winter in one swift movement- a downwards stroke that should have been easily avoided. And there in the sky, with the stars as witness, the Queen of Winter met the gaze of her attacker. If it had been any other of the three, they would have made peace with their fate, but the Queen was never quite like the others. Defiant to the end, she crossed her daggers in front of her, and even as the Other's blade pierced her heart and drained the life from her body, she held them tight. And down on the ground, the Prince of Autumn opened his eyes, and watched, helpless, as his friend, still frozen to her knives with rage and grief, spiralled to the ground with a flurry of snowflakes. She came to rest in the centre of a forest that was as bare as everything else, and where she landed, the grass grew, curling around and enveloping her until she was barely visible.
