<b>"Wait!!! I have so many unanswered questions!"</b>
(link: "Psst! What's Thedas?")[
<i>What's Thedas?</i>
Well, trivia tells us it was originally shorthand for The Dragon Age Setting, which means neither you nor I will ever be able to take it seriously ever again. But to answer your question, it's the setting in which the Dragon Age games (made by Bioware) take place!]
(link: "What's all this then?")[
<i>What exactly is this?</i>
Have you ever wished that you could replay a favorite game all over again just like it was the first time? Or maybe that a story you loved could be different and surprise you by including new content the next time you looked it over?
That's what this is supposed to be! I'm not sure if the experience will be quite the same for players who don't know the original source material, but I've made efforts to make this accessible regardless of past gaming experience with the franchise.]
(link: "I want more info about what this game will entail?")[
<i>I want more info about the game:</i>
This is a loving retelling of the story of Dragon Age: Origins, with some significant edits (added content here, ignoring some content I don't feel like rehashing there, etc.) I won't be lifting the dialogue from the original game, though the basic plot outline will, in theory, still be the same.
Some differences are present, though, hopefully to the enjoyment of you, the player. Think of it like a big interactive fanfiction!]
(link: "I'm totally unfamiliar with Dragon Age as a series, what is the lore?")[
<i>Clue me in on the lore:</i>
Once upon a time, The Maker created the world. Then humanity decided they were Super Cool, and some of their mages broke through the barrier between the normal world and the Fade, where Dreams Are Real. Their goal: enter The Maker's Golden City and show off just how Totally Rad they were.
Trouble was, as soon as they touched the Golden City, everything turned black with corruption from their greed. Those who'd dared to go there were cast out, infected with a horrible plague that made them zombie-ish. These creatures propogated and became a worldwide menace, colloquially referred to as "Darkspawn". (Cheery, right?)
Cue the modern day: All signs now point to a Blight happening soon. That's what it's called when the Darkspawn have a leader, and instead of just mindlessly shuffling around being undead they actively try to ruin life for the rest of the living. Blights have happened before, but they're never pleasant, and everybody loses when a Blight happens.
That's where you come in.]
(link: "It's asking me to choose what I am, the options are a little confusing?")[
<i>It's asking me to pick what to be without much info, I'm hesitant.</i>
Don't worry! Character creation will give you the option to pick over again if you decide you don't really like how things came out with your first choice, before you actually start the game proper.

(link: "Ok, I played the original Dragon Age: Origins game and I //know// there weren't any Qunari origins!")[//Ok, I played the original Dragon Age: Origins game and I //know// there weren't any Qunari origins!"//
You're right! This wouldn't be much fun as a fan-project if I just rehashed the exact same game, would it? So there are five additional origins:
<b>Human Urchin</b> - You're a poor human just trying to make a living in the Hinterlands.
<b>Surface Dwarf</b> - You're a Surface-dwelling dwarf Enchanter! You are capable of making works and wares imbued with the essence of magic, and can safely (sort of) work with Lyrium where your human and elven competitors can't.
<b>Qunari Tal-Vashoth</b> - You are a lone Qunari mage who rejected the Qun and now wanders the southern lands of Thedas, seeking a new purpose for yourself.
<b>Qunari Ashaad</b> - You were sent to scout Thedas. This is your role, 'Ashaad'.
<b>Qunari Tamassran</b> - You are a Qunari Tamassran who chose to seek to spread the Qun outside of your homeland. It is your opinion that this is what the Qun commands.
]
You are a Human Noble, of the house Cousland. Your family is part of the ruling class of Ferelden. Your lot in life is to someday become Teryn Cousland, and you could conceivably be in line for the throne if there's no ruler in the future and you're able to sway enough people to support you.
Your parents have raised you to be a strong fighter, specializing in the use of bladed weapons, shields, and bows. Most of your training has been with your friend, Ser Gilmore, and practice dummies, but you're pretty sure you could take on the world if you had to!
You have been allowed to go on several hunts, and your crowning achievement at this stage of your life is that you are exceptionally good at hunting boars. Maybe it's not the most impressive sort of life to have led up to this point, but you're reasonably content with your place in life and your accomplishments. You're also skilled at horseback riding and have helped train several warhorses for use by King Cailan's armies.
(link: "I do have other hobbies than killing things, though.")[There's a great deal about the world you have been sheltered from thanks to the life you've led up to this point, but you are intimately familiar with the hatred sewn between your home nation and Orlais, the power-hungry Empire that not so long ago held Ferelden in occupation. You've never really interacted with any Orlesians, but you know how your parents feel about them, so you have learned to mistrust Orlesians intrinsically. You imagine that someday, you will get to ride off with your father and possibly the great hero, Teryn Loghain, in combat. It's a bit fantastical, you know, but you dream occasionally of driving back the Orlesian forces from Ferelden's western borders, where they yet linger to this day.
Ser Gilmore has told you time and again that the Orlesians are no longer a threat in the modern day, but you have a feeling that such sentiments are those afforded the impractical and the short-sighted. You have no doubt in your heart that someday within your lifetime, hostilities between Orlais and Ferelden will reach a boiling point once more, and you intend to be prepared to ride West and give aid to Ferelden's bravest when that happens.
]You are something of a nationalist, but who isn't, especially when born to such a proud and loyal family? Your parents certainly don't try to dissuade you from your passion for Fereldan history, and your rapt interest has made you a model student for your instructors, as well.
Last but not least, what Fereldan would be complete without their own pet Mabari hound? Mabari, as you are fond of reminding those that would slight them, are dogs of such high intelligence that they rival humans for strategic capacity. They are a symbol of pride, loyalty and honor among fellow Fereldans and you spoil yours constantly because it is, in many ways, your best friend.
[[Ferelden is great, and Orlais stinks! Yeaaah!!|Cousland 001]]
[[Nope, that's not me. Start over please!|chargen]]
You are a magically talented human. You were born into the Noble Amell line, which has been relatively magical for quite some time, much to the chagrin of your forbears. Of course, when you awakened as a mage your family was disappointed but not surprised. You were disowned by them, turned over to the Templars, and sent off to start a new life.
According to the tenets of the Andrastian Chantry, this is standard for any mage in Thedas. Magic is considered unpredictable and dangerous, after all. In no time at all, you were sorted out and sent to the Circle at Lake Calenhad, where you could study magic safely away from //normal// people. You have long since learned to loathe that word, for it is used too often like a weapon against you and your fellow mages.
The Circle has not been especially good or bad, you think. You have memories of pleasant times and memories of horrible times, after all. Still, you have made all of those memories as a prisoner, and you have never forgotten that fact. After all, mages aren't permitted to return to their families for any reason. Mages are discouraged from pursuing romance, probably because the idea of more mages being born amongst you is distasteful to your jailors. You are constantly under guard by the Templars. Yes, you're supposed to believe that all of this is done for your own safety, for your own good.
You have never really bought into that idea, and you know you're not alone.
(link: "Well, then, I'm going to do something about it!")[You also know that speaking out against this obviously unjust oppression is dangerous, because the people who mete out the laws of this system have the freedom to deem you "irrational and emotional", and therefore susceptible to demons. If they do that, they're authorized to sever your connection to the Fade and your magic-- an experience which you would prefer to avoid.
This ritual-- called the Rite of Tranquility-- is used often enough that you have friends in the Circle who are now Tranquil. You have to interact with them every day, wondering if they are secretly wishing for you to help them. Tranquil are excellent enchanters, capable of speech and still able to take care of their own basic needs, but they have no passion, no joy. They seem utterly unconcerned about their past and their future.
You want nothing more than to give your friends their emotions, their magic, their //souls// back, but the scholars say it's not possible. On your darker days, you give up hope and believe them.
]Honestly, things are pretty bad for you. Sometimes in your most bitter moments, you wish you could have been born without your so-called 'Gifts'. If it wasn't for them, maybe you'd be living a better life right now.
[[Not exactly the cheeriest start, but okay! I'll see where this goes.|Amell 001]]
[[Whoa whoa wait! This isn't what I was expecting. I'd like to start over!|chargen]]You are the second child of the noble dwarven king, Endrin Aeducan, favored in his heart and gloried by your heritage. You, like your elder brother Trian and your younger brother Bhelen, are the product of the honored line of Paragon Aeducan, who led the armies of Orzammar against the Darkspawn upon the dawning of the First Blight. Battle is in your blood, and you have never wanted for purpose in your life, as you took quite naturally to it.
While you are openly regarded as your father's favorite child, spoiled and beloved by him to the occasional expense of your brothers, you love them both dearly and get along with them most of the time. Things are strained between you and Trian, perhaps because he sometimes fears that your popularity will see him made an attendant and you the heir to the throne, but Bhelen holds no such aspirations and is one of your closest friends. You do your best to remain civil with both while maintaining your image of strength, since you are well aware of the deadly seriousness of the court within which you were raised.
It's a difficult position, serving as second in such a powerful line when there are such massive disagreements between your siblings. Bhelen is a voice for change and growth, while Trian is staunchly in favor of traditions unchanging and eternal as stone. Fortunately, you have not yet been asked to offer your opinion on either stance. You spend much of your free time with Gorim, your second, who doubles as your closest confidant.
There is always an undercurrent of political unrest stirring the Dwarves of Orzimmar, for no dwarf can truly ignore the problem of the ever-encroaching Blight. Waves upon waves of unceasing and relentless undead boil in the lost caverns of forgotten Thaigs in every direction. Yours is the last great Dwarven City of an ancient age of prosperity, and your people are never less than poignantly aware of that fact.
Since he's well aware of that threat, your father has named you a commander of the army. Tomorrow you will lead your house's soldiers in battle. Tonight, however, there is a feast to be held in your honor!
[[Let me make haste, then! I'm sure I have some important preparations to attend.|Aeducan 001]]

You were born in the shadows of Dust Town and you'll probably die here. While some would say that being born a dwarf is a great honor that means you're the stuff of noble legends and great tradition or some junk, the truth is, Orzammar's a broken sieve and you? You represent just one grain of the handfuls of sand constantly falling out through the hole. Nobody wants a casteless dwarf like you or your family, and most other folks in Dust Town know the feeling.
If the nobles think it's hard to get food and trade goods, well, it's harder still to get those things when you're destitute and desperate, and that's kind of the standard for anybody that doesn't join up with one of the gangs down here.
Supposedly, it's illegal to trade with the surface and nobody who goes to the surface is considered to be a Real Dwarf anymore once they've been topside, but most of the trade that comes into Orzammar is thanks to the criminal rings run out of your backyard. You're not a sentimental fool like some, and you and your sister Rica made an agreement long ago to get out of the hole by any means necessary.
That's what led the two of you to join Beraht, the biggest boss in your district of down. Beraht's scum, the lowest of the low, but he's got money and powerful connections, and that's what you need to keep yourself, Rica and your mother alive.
You try not to be too choked up about the things Beraht has you do. It's easier when you just think of them as errands.
[[Yeah, that's me. Muscle does what muscle's got to do.|Brosca 001]]
[[No, this isn't really what I had in mind. Start over, please!|chargen]]
You were born to the former keeper of Clan Sabrae and his wife, whose names you have never been told. Though their union was the subject of some controversy they were determined to be together, and they were happy for a time. They were attacked before you were born, however, and grievously wounded, leaving your father dead and your mother near death. She lived long enough to see you into the world before leaving the clan to be alone with her grief.
Now, raised by Keeper Marethari-- your father's successor, and your guardian-- you have become a dedicated Hunter and protector to your Clan. After all, you are Dalish elves, and wander the world from north to south. Just this past year has seen Clan Sabrae traveling through the forests and mountains of Ferelden, starting from the Hinterlands and heading east towards the sea.
Long have elves been forced to live either in servitude to humans or in the wilderness, your ancient temples and cities now in ruins. Little is left to you but the whispered words of memories like Arlathan, a once-great bastion of elven knowledge and culture the likes of which the world will likely never see again.
Grim though this legacy may seem, all is not lost, for the Dalish work hard to preserve and recover the ancient knowledge and secrets of those who came before them. Your clan is a peaceful one for the most part, welcoming to outside elves who may have fled persecution in the human cities of this land. You have many friends among the clan, from the story teller Hahren Paivel to the Keeper's First, Merrill. Best of those friends is Tamlen, your fellow Hunter. So, though at times you feel alone and adrift without connection to your past, your present is full of life and friendship, and you cherish these things, knowing all too well how fleeting they can be.
[[This is my story. Let's continue!|Mahariel 001]]
[[No, wait. I think I meant to be someone else. Let's start over!|chargen]]You were born into the city of Denerim, and you'll probably die here, a thought which doesn't give you or any of your family and friends much comfort. The trouble with being born as an elf in Thedas is that elves are treated as second-class citizens or worse by the humans who are in power. You can't really see the good behind the bad because you're fairly certain there is no good. It's just centuries upon centuries of power abuse and cruelty with humans.
Of course, there are those among your friends in the Alienage, fellow elves, who buy into it all or worse, spend their days lamenting about the lost glory of the ancient times. Arlathan and the Dalish elves! If those wishes could be reality then you know the lot of them would sign up. It's foolish nonsense to run away from problems, though, a lesson you know all too well. You have your mother to thank for that.
When you were very young, your mother, Adaia, taught you almost everything she knew. She was skilled and smart and never willing to just lay down and let herself be trod upon by humankind. While Cyrion-- your father-- likes to say that that noble and rebellious spirit is what got your mother killed, you're smart enough to know that it was a system of oppression that led to her death, not the justice of the world. While you love your father, he is far more willing to submit to the cruelty of the world than she was, perhaps due to his loss of her, and this is a subject on which you two have frequently argued.
Now your father is trying to find you a suitable partner, in hopes that a marriage to someone of good standing and attractive appearance will improve your lot in life, maybe put you in service with a forgiving human noble. Despite your concerns about how enjoyable such a life would be, he's already set everything up and is financing everything in the hopes that you will be happy.
[[This may be my lot, but I don't have to be ashamed of it.|Tabris 001]]
[[No, I'm not interested in being married, I think. Start over please!|chargen]]You were born elven, and are magically talented. You were born in the city of Denerim, one of the most populous places in all of Ferelden. As is common in human cities, your parents were Andrastian, which is the most commonly practiced religion in Thedas. On the upside, you're great fun at parties, where you can show off your latest hilarious ventriloquy tricks! ...On the downside, Andrastian law doesn't much like mages.
When you awakened as a mage your family was terrified and heartbroken. According to the tenets of the Andrastian Chantry, you were to be stripped of your past familial connections and sent to a Circle, where you could study magic safely away from //normal// people. You have long since learned to loathe that word, for it is used too often like a weapon against you and your fellow mages.
The Circle has not been especially good or bad, you think. You have memories of pleasant times and memories of horrible times, but no more so than you would otherwise...right? All of those memories were made as a prisoner, though, and you have never forgotten that fact. Mages aren't permitted to return to their families even for visits on holidays, and you are constantly under guard by the Templars. You are discouraged from romance with your fellow mages, and you are expected to be content with living out the rest of your life here. You're supposed to believe that all of this is done for your own safety, for your own good.
You have never really bought into that idea, and you know you're not alone.

They seem utterly stripped of ambition and drive, and though they remember everything (more or less), they don't seem to care about what happened to them, or what will happen to them in the future. It's awful, and your greatest desire in the world is to somehow undo this terrible thing.
But you've been told it's not possible. And as far as you know, that seems to be true.

But don't worry! Everything's going to be fine! Because this wacky human just showed up. (if: $origin contains "Mahariel")[Well, anyway, as chance would have it, you and your buddy, your pal, good ol' Tamlen, are out hunting the woods for delicious rabbits. Truth be told, you're both thirsty for the blood of those racist jerk humans who like to poach in your forest and generally ruin your day and //what should you happen to find// but a trio of panicked humans bawling about a haunted mirror. Tamlen looks at you and the two of you have a laugh at the sheer nonsense of it all.
'Haunted mirror? You really oughta lay off the forest mushrooms,' you laugh cruelly, fully ready to attack if that's what it takes to scare these shemlens off. (Shemlen is the elvish term for humans. It's one of the many injustices elves have to put up with, that none of you is fluent in your original language, but you do your best individually to keep the few pieces that have survived the wear and tear of time).
Weird thing is, the humans are really insistent about this haunted mirror. Like, for real, they're more scared you'll send them back than slaughter them. So you reconsider the situation, and decide to spare their lives. All right, whatever. Get out of the forest, and don't come back.
Tamlen looks at you, and you look at Tamlen. The conversation more or less goes like this:
(link: "'So. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?'")['So. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?'
'If you're thinking we gotta check out that haunted mirror, then //YES//.'
Needless to say, this is possibly the worst idea either of you has ever had. Tamlen gets entranced by the creepy thing as you approach it and touches the mirror's surface and then as far as you can tell, everything goes dark. You wake up half-dead three days later back at camp. Tamlen's missing, presumed dead. The only reason you're still alive is the grace of a shemlen named Duncan.
He says he's a Grey Warden, that the only chance to cure you of the lingering, sickly feeling in your gut is for you to join his order. In the pit of your stomach, you have a terrible feeling that he's lying to you.
But it's not like you have a better option, either, is it?
He introduces himself to you formally, and you do him the same courtesy back. 'So,' you ask, once the clan has performed a funeral service for Tamlen and moved on...without you. 'What now?'
'Now we head south,' Duncan informs you, patting your shoulder comfortingly. 'To [[Ostagar]].']]
(if: $origin contains "Aeducan")[Guess what? It turns out you shouldn't have trusted either of your brothers. Guess who's officially taking the blame for this little stunt? Oh yeah. It's you.
While you and Gorim rot in jail for the next several days, seething at Bhelen's opportunistic powergrabbing and reeling in shock at Trian's death, apparently those few who retain loyalty to you at home have decided to give you an honorable death: You'll be sent back out into the Deep Roads to fend off a hoard of darkspawn until they inevitably rip you to pieces and turn you into one of them.
You grit your teeth, stiffen your back, and take this challenge head on. You want these people who have engineered your suffering-- yes, maybe even your death-- to remember your final moments with a vague sense of unease and fear.

So you accept his outstretched hand and agree. You will join the Grey Wardens.
Duncan informs you, 'Then our first order of business will be travel. We head south, to [[Ostagar]].']]]
(if: $origin contains "Brosca")[So, bit of a catch to the whole working for criminals thing: no matter how good //you// are at your job, you can still end up associating with some pretty useless piles of filth, and that's just the situation you find yourself in in what seems like no time at all.
You can feel your life flashing before your eyes even before you pull on Everd's armor. Casteless, sullying the Proving Grounds with your marked ass? Yeah, probably not going to make a good impression on the Stone, let alone the high-strung nobility whose honor you're about to mock. You can't let this go wrong, though. Everd's drunk, and your mother and sister are counting on you. Beraht's a mean one.
Honestly, you figure you'll worry about the rest later.Worse not to compete than to let this fall through, right?
Well...actually, on second thought...maybe you should've made sure Everd was totally knocked out before you risked being seen. The only thing worse than pissing off nobles is pissing off Beraht and you know the kind of temper that guy has. He's going to assume you did the whole thing to embarrass him, not try to protect his investment.
So, okay. This is fine. This is all fine. You're only in Beraht's personal prison. Facing certain death.
[Maybe that's what really spurs you into action at the last second.]<replace|(link: "It's you or Beraht. So...")[(replace: ?replace)[It's Beraht that's going to pay this time.]
You're sick of this endless life of debt and slavery. It's almost pathetic how easy it is to finish him off, but you savor it. After all, Beraht has made life hell for you. It puts you in a good mood to pay a little back. Heck, you're even willing to humor fate when the strange human man, Duncan, approaches you.
He says he saw you, out on the Proving Grounds. Says he was impressed. Says he's a Grey Warden, and could use someone like you.
At first, you're going to tell him no. You have a family to go back to and a sister to take care of. You've got interests to protect. But then-- ahh. Then you just feel so tired. What are you even waiting for?
So you hold out your stubby hand to him and introduce yourself. '$origin. $name $origin.'
Duncan smiles, and you offer a cocky grin back, still dirty, tired, and half dead on your feet. 'It is a pleasure to meet you.'
And then? Well, then you're on the road. On the surface!
En route to [[Ostagar]].]]
(if: $origin contains "Surana")[Well, just when you thought living in a human-made prison for your whole life couldn't get any worse, you wake up suddenly in the middle of the night. //It's time,// some of your armored, drug-addicted, anti-magic guards inform you. This is, understandably, not the most reassuring experience you've ever had.
They push you through the halls from your bed to an altar. Your heart is pounding. There's a lyrium concoction there and apparently, you have to drink it. No explanation, nothing, just-- drink this! Drink it //now//.
You conclude that your life is really, very weird, when you think about it. But you do it. You drink the potion, and are transferred from consciousness directly to lucid dreaming in the Fade. Oh, great! You're in the demon place. Where demons live!
Through a bit of careful deduction you quickly ascertain that the guy who's acting like he's an innocent student and trying to supposedly help you out is actually trying to hitch a ride with you. That's not happening. But you're left with more questions than answers, really. Why is the Fade so feared? What is the difference between the enraged, //demonic// seeming creature that sought to ride in your head out of here, and the lazy or calm manifestations of Sloth and Valor that you ran into?
These are the kinds of things you recognize could get you in a lot of trouble if you talked about them, so you don't. As soon as you wake up it becomes clear that you just got put through the worst of the Hazing rituals in the Circle-- the Harrowing, which determines whether you get to become a full on mage, or endure an involuntarily surgery to remove your magical capabilities and make you complacent. You're relieved, you're so gratified that you made it through, but doubt follows you out of the Fade and all the way back to normal life.
They say you're official now, but what good is that? Even First Enchanter Irving will be prisoner for the rest of his life. Being in the hierarchy isn't fighting the system, the oppression. It won't protect weaker mages like your friend, Jowan.
Jowan, who you do your damnedest to protect despite his ridiculous ideas and not-so-subtle blood magic. You wish you could be surprised when he panics and reveals himself before the Andrastian maid he'd claimed to love, but you're just disappointed in him. You were so close to making your case for him, but now--!
Now he's on his own, and you'll probably face the consequences.
Only after the fact does Duncan approach you and make it known that maybe, just maybe-- you don't have to. You've heard of the Grey Wardens; you know more about them than most common people probably do, having often read up on them in your spare time here at the Circle. You're a little worried that you won't have what it takes, but enough is enough. This place will be unbearable without Jowan around.
If he's gone, then you want to be gone too.
You graciously accept Duncan's offer, and join him as he travels South. When you ask where you're headed, he informs you that the destination will be the ancient battlefield of [[Ostagar]].

(if: $origin contains "Cousland")[Arl Howe shows up on a seemingly routine visit and invites your father out to join him in battle or some such. You're not entirely sure what's going on. Nobody will let you participate (you're the //heir//, as your mother and the castle servants so readily say), even though you're a superb fighter and as soon as a Grey Warden shows up scouting for recruits you just about explode with excitement. This, of course, is the opposite of what your parents wish for you. They would much prefer you stay home and mind the castle, get in some good Boring Leadership experience.
They don't understand. They can't possibly understand the glory of battle, how it calls to you! Or so you think.
Then you wake up to the bark of your faithful hound, just in time to grab a $weapon and fend off an attack in your bedchambers. And what you find as you dress and rush to your mother's room, your brother's, to the guest chambers-- what you find is pure cruelty. Slaughter has visited your home, left gory wakes pooling under every door. Your friends and castle servants and even those you didn't much care for, all of them-- every last one, save your mother-- lies dead.
You're too much in shock at first, when you come upon Ser Gilmore and he tells you that your father yet lives, and had fought his way into the kitchen. You're not thinking as you rush after him, your mother close behind-- you're not expecting it to already be too late to save him.
This isn't what you wanted. This isn't...
It isn't right. It isn't fair!
When Duncan begs you to join him, to serve beside him as a Grey Warden-- when your mother swears she will stay behind with your father and die protecting him and you-- you aren't ashamed to cry. You do your best to master those emotions, though, and accept the offer.
As many times as you glance back after you've followed Duncan through the secret passage to safety, the sky still seems just as black and red, as though the whole world were burning. For you, it is.
Only when morning comes do you find your voice again. 'Where are we going?'
You feel hoarse and numb and stiff and cold and miserable. Some distant part of you realizes that you have company, though-- that your Mabari, at least, made it with you. That brings on a whole new onslaught of tears, and at first you miss Duncan's answer.
He kindly repeats himself, once you've gotten your emotions under control. 'We go to [[Ostagar]].'

(link: "A Note about Disabilities and Representation in this Game")[A Note about Disabilities and Representation in this Game
I want all players to be able to create a character as much like themselves as they should desire! With that in mind, every disability represented here is also presented as something which the player character is confident about, and has some kind of aid to help them with. Thedas is a land of magic and dragons, and so I have decided that for the purposes of this game, Thedas also has excellent magically enhanced prosthetics for the physically disabled, and excellent herbology for the treatement and maintenance of pain, mental disabilities, and health conditions (such as a weak heart, etc).
The point of these things is not to give your character a penalty, but to grant you representation. Therefore, representation comes with an explanation of how magic in Thedas is aiding you in living with your disability, and will hopefully not negatively affect the play experience of any character.]Okay! When we say 'gender identity' here, we are talking about what you present as and what you are. For the purposes of this game, I wrote the whole thing intending to be trans-positive and trans-friendly, so anyone who identifies as male counts as male, and anybody who identifies as female counts as female. I'm not going to ask what your character was assigned at birth because in this world, that doesn't matter. Everybody is going to respect and validate the identity you choose. [[I can use my legs but they cause me pain regularly or constantly.]](set: $mania to "yes")You experience mania. Sometimes you just can't stop bragging about yourself, and you don't really care about anybody else in the room. You may have a slightly increased sex drive, and at times you can be reckless because of your confidence.
While in the midst of a manic episode, you might find it questionable why someone would consider this a condition that needs treating. When you are not, however, the reckless and sometimes self-endangering things that mania makes you do sit poorly with you, and you want to avoid the risk of being hurt because you didn't recognize that there was a danger present. To mitigate the bad parts of mania, you drink a potion once a week, mixed from trace amounts of Bloodstone, copious amounts of bitter Deep Mushrooms, and a soothing apology of savory flavored Dogweed (a flower native to good ol' boggy Ferelden). It helps you to control the urge to say "Of course I can!" whenever the question "can I really see myself doing this?" arises.
[[Okay, anything else?]] (set: $depression to "yes")You experience depression. Sometimes you just can't summon the energy for any part of living. It can be difficult to stop crying, or even to identify why you're crying. At these times sometimes you struggle with self-worth or even the base desire to continue to live. You are highly sensitive to emotional lows and sometimes having to talk or eat or acknowledge the world around you is too much of a burden to bear.
Untreated, your depression is overwhelming and sometimes drives you to dangerous places. However, you have access to a potion concocted using Rashvine Nettle, a ghostly fungus called Witch's Kiss native to certain bogs, and Elfroot: once a week, you drink a draught of this and it helps to keep the worst of your symptoms at bay. When you are in the middle of a depressive episode even the potions are not necessarily enough to help you cope, but regular use of them helps to mitigate the harshest of your low emotional moments, and makes it possible for you to get through your day to day routine.
[[Okay, anything else?]] (set: $socanxiety to "yes")You experience social anxiety. The idea of being in a room with other people is overwhelming and scary for you, and you would prefer to avoid having to brave that at any cost. It's not a rational thing. You experience the same ordinary fears as any other person might when faced with a crowd. The difference is that you can't dismiss those fears.
To combat this, you consume a potion made from Bruin berries and Myrrh once a week. It helps to lessen the overall feeling of unease and fear, and gives you strength to handle day to day life. It's not perfect, but it helps.
[[Okay, anything else?]] (set: $anxiety to "yes")You experience generalized anxiety. You find it very difficult to remain calm, even when there is no evident reason for you to be concerned that things are wrong. It's hard for you to control the fear that whatever the worst possible thing that could happen IS happening. Sometimes this extends to your relationships and goals, and you even find yourself unintentionally sabotaging these things with your own fear that something will go wrong. For example, sometimes you might catch yourself telling yourself that it will never work out with a friend or that they hate you, or giving up on a goal before you even start to work to achieve it. Being anxious is extremely exhausting and frustrating.
To combat this, you consume a special potion of Bruin berries once a week. It doesn't make the feeling of unease go away completely, but it helps you to be able to cope, and that's what matters.
[[Okay, anything else?]] (set: $sensoryoverload to "yes")You experience sensory overload sometimes when presented with what, to other people, is considered a 'normal' amount of external stimuli. When this happens you have to retreat from the oversensitizing stimulus if possible. Sometimes this means leaving a place or finding a quiet spot to curl up in until you are ready to handle the world again. You keep a specially designed cloak with you at all times to help for these events. It is made of a fabric that helps to dampen sound and ground you with a welcome and soft physical sensation. When you pull up the hood and close your eyes it can help you to recover from the overload.
[[Okay, anything else?]] (set: $hallucination to "yes")You sometimes experience sensory illusions or hallucinations when your body is stressed or you are overstimulated; a sound may seem to become distorted or you may heard sounds that you are reasonably sure are real, but no one else can hear. Alternatively, you may see warped versions of the world around you, or images of things that other people do not seem to see, though they feel very real to you. This can be somewhat terrifying at times and sometimes it is difficult to identify what is real for the world at large, and what is real only for you.
You wear a charm to help mitigate the effects of these hallucinations, and it protects you from the worst effects. It was carved from silverite and etched with dwarven and elven runes for healing magic, and when you touch the charm it helps to lessen the reality of your hallucinations, making it easier for you to reassert what is real and what is not. You also drink a potion made of Bruin berries and Witch's Kiss once a week, and doing so regularly has made sure that the frequency and severity of your hallucinations is much more manageable than they might be otherwise.
[[Okay, anything else?]] (set: $disconnect to "yes")You have a disconnect between the way you perceive the world, and the way other people expect you to perceive the world. Things like body language don't make sense to you, and you have difficulty gauging the mood and feelings of people around you, sometimes. This is not to say that certain elements of body language are not logical and understandable to you: you find it much easier to understand the needs and desires of animals and other non-speaking creatures, who communicate clearly, simply, and effectively.
In order to bridge this gap, you do your best to explain your every intent exactly to the people around you. Sometimes they do not understand, but those who are close to you understand that if they have failed to communicate a point to you, it must be restated in another way for the point to make sense. Sometimes you can't process information quickly because you are thinking too much, or otherwise need to release energy by flapping your hands, tapping your feet, maybe chewing on something. These activities help you to center and process things, and your friends understand and accept that this is a part of who you are and how you communicate, and know to give you some space if you are being overstimulated.

Frequently these are made of elfroot and prophet's laurel, both of which you recognize in their natural state, so you are confident you know what to look for should your supply ever run low.
[[Okay, anything else?]](set: $fullbody to "heart condition")You have a heart condition and as a result, you need to be careful in how much stress you put your body through. Fortunately, Thedas's magical herbs include numerous useful potions that help regulate your heartbeat and keep you strong. The primary herbs used in such a concoction are the ominously named deathroot, whose leaves are considerably less poisonous than the infamous roots, and dogweed, a common herb in Ferelden.
[[Okay, anything else?]](set: $fullbody to "arthritis")You experience arthritic pain throughout your entire body, and this regularly interferes with your daily routine. Fortunately, Thedas's magical herbs include numerous useful salves that help reduce the pain to a manageable level.
[[Okay, anything else?]](set: $fullbody to "epileptic")You are epileptic or otherwise experience seizures if exposed to bright or flashing lights. While this experience is very unsettling and you prefer to avoid it, mage healers can help you and have done so in the past when you had difficult seizures. A certain enchanter gifted you with a stone pendant, when you met them once. This pendant helps you to mitigate the severity of your seizures and emits a sensation of cold when you are near to having a seizure, allowing you to get to a safe place and avoid getting hurt until the episode has passed.
[[Okay, anything else?]](set: $compulsion to "yes")You have developed certain repetitive behaviors which you feel compelled to do, to the point that failure to do them can make it difficult or even impossible for you to continue on with your day until order has been restored. While some of these personal rituals can be helpful and even pleasant for you, you are making efforts to avoid the compulsions that can be detrimental to your health. You haven't worked up to completely stopping these compulsions yet, but sometimes you are able to delay them and even forget about them if you concentrate on resisting the urge to complete them.
A side-effect of this is a reasonable amount of anxiety, which doesn't surprise you, even if it is unpleasant. To help mitigate that and, subsequently, make it easier for you to continue your efforts to control your compulsions, you drink a potion once a week made of Bruin berries and Elfroot. This lessens the anxiety you feel and makes it possible for you to remain calm even when things are in disarray.

[[And so...]]You grew up on the streets of Gwaren, a small southern city on the eastern coast of Ferelden. Your mother was a sailor and your father died when you were a child, leaving you in the dubious supervision of the local criminal element, your elder siblings, and yourself. Unsurprisingly, this means you had to get most of your education out on the street.
As one of the many needy folk in the city, you were a frequent visitor to the local Chantry, where you learned to praise Andraste and the Maker. There was always a Chantry Sister willing to feed a hungry child, a Templar on hand to quote scripture at you, or a warm room to sleep in if your home wasn't safe that night. While the Maker might frown on your sticky fingers and disregard for Fereldan law, you've yet to be smote for it, so you figure you can't be //that// bad.
Teryn Loghain is the lord of your city, though he hasn't been back in town for years. The stories say he single-handedly saved King Maric from the Orlesians during the occupation, and built up the Ferelden rebellion and its forces despite being a nothing and nobody himself, at the time. Maybe nobles are shite and you'd spit on one if you could, but for Loghain you'd probably make an exception.
Now that you're grown you make do with fishing and thieving as your primary sources of income. Trading off one for the other tends to work well-- go on a fishing run up and down the coast and you're likely to avoid the heat for a crime until the authorities forget your face. Steal a few jewels to fence and you'll be able to drink till you forget how miserable it is being a sailor.
Everything is going fine, more or less, except for the small factor of your family shop-- which recently closed down.
[[Well, sounds like I might be in trouble if I need to find a place to sleep...|Hafter 001]]
[[No, I don't think I want to deal with this problem. Start over!|chargen]]While the legacy of Dwarvenkind is famously that of Orzammar, those who yet live below in the ancient Dwarven Thaigs and observe the ways of their ancestors before them, there are some who are born to the surface-- to Thedas itself, topside-- and that's you. You were born to two dwarves who were on the run for the theft of a very expensive shipment of lyrium from a very powerful crime boss, in fact, so it was made clear to you from an early age that you should never, ever use your parents' names. They gave you one instead, made it up, and hoped it would cover your needs.
Fortunately, that wasn't //all// they gave you. Not much an honest, hardworking dwarf can do with just a name, now, is there? So while your father was a merchant, just picking up and selling wares his line of work, your mother's skills as an enchanter were something you picked up as you grew and took over the family business. Most dwarves can work with lyrium more safely than humans or elves can, sure, but you were gifted with your mother's touch and knowledge. You can shape powerful magical runes out of raw lyrium and merge it with other ores to enhance weaponry, armor, even accessory items or furniture, at times. While this is technically quite illegal by both surfacer //and// Orzammar law, it hasn't stopped you from doing excellent business at a pretty nice profit, besides.
Dwarves are pretty uncommon up on the surface, so when your old parents decided to retire off to Antiva, that left you with very few other dwarves to socialize with. That doesn't really bother you much, of course, since you get along fine with humans and elves, but there are other ramifications.
For example, you're about the only dwarf who tries to procure shipments of lyrium without going through official channels and does it regularly. Now you've made sure never to cross anyone you were doing business with, to minimize potential grudges or vendettas against you in the future, but some people take success personally, too, and you're very successful.
A letter from your parents, recently, warned you (in code) to keep an eye out for incoming storms, so you're trying to do just that.
[[Yep, this is me. Let's get to work!|Orzedan 001]]
[[Wait a tic, I think I've got a better idea. Start over!|chargen]]Tal-Vashoth! You are a Qunari, though only in race and not in spirit, according to the customs of your people. Your parents, before you, chose to flee the Qun, seeking freedomg from the teachings of Koslun and the rigid system of governance which they had been born into.
Your mother was originally Arvaraad, who keeps the Saarebas safe and trains them, teaches them. She could not bear the loss of her charge after a battle, and so quit the field while the smoke of the enemy's attacks still clouded her sight. Your other mother never spoke of her role before she became Tal-Vashoth, but said that she could not stand to fight any longer, and hoped only that she might live in a peaceful place for the rest of her days. This wish was granted when she met your mother, and was given the opportunity to flee the Qun and become her true self.
Your parents settled in Rivain, where they were successful traders, capable of working with imported wares that many native artisans found difficult to mold. When you were born to them, the gentle teachings of native Rivaini mages and seers saw you through the eventual awakening of your magic, bringing wonder and joy to your mothers, who both witnessed your growth with hope for a brighter future. Under the Qun, your mother Once-Arvaraad has said, you would not have been permitted to live freely, for mages are feared and bound, collared and silenced, made completely dependent on their Arvaraad. Your freedom, as a mage and Tal-Vashoth, has made them happiest of all the great blessings they received since they fled their homeland.
Though you bear the horns of your people and many humans and elves still fear you for your race, you have found that Rivain is a welcoming place, not so backwards as most of Thedas in their traditions and their customs. Life here is good, and you serve upon a trade vessel, currently working as the ship's navigator, since you can manipulate the weather when needed to clear the sky and see the stars.
[[Yes, this is who I am, who I was meant to be!|Herah 001]]
[[No, this life is not the one I would choose. Start over, please!|chargen]]Glory be to the prophet Koslun, whose teachings govern your way of life, your purpose, and your knowledge of the world. You hail from the island nation Par Vollen, where your people are most common and the teachings of the Qun are understood to be the Way of Governance best suited to the happiness of all people. Within your homeland, all persons are granted a role by which to live and so absolved of the weight of worrying about whether they will be provided for or looked after.
Granted the role of Ashaad by your Tamassrans, your priests, you have lived your life since maturation as dictated by your role as military scout and infantry fighter. There is a deep contentment in serving this purpose, for you are quite good at it and enjoy the simplicity of your duty. Traveling the world and viewing its wonders, staking out enemy camps and reporting their weaknesses back to your Sten or your Arishok (once, it was your fortune to deliver such a report) is something you enjoy and relish.
Currently, you are part of a scouting party sent to investigate Ferelden, in the southern lands of Thedas. As is customary, you are one of several Ashaad in this group, equally tasked along with the others to observe and, ultimately, report back to your leader, Sten. This is an exciting new prospect for you, and though the weather is cold and unpleasant, making your horns occasionally ache, the land is strikingly beautiful, populated with strange and foreign flowers. When this country too comes under the sway of the Qun, you are sure its people will flourish.

Praise be to the prophet Koslun, who saw the disorder and chaos of life as it was before the Qun, and devised these laws of self-governance to mend it. You were born in Par Vollen, and chosen to take on the role of Tamassran by those who came before you. While you grew to maturation, you made study of the teachings of Koslun and became intimately familiar with the Qun.
You have no doubt in your heart that the Qun is a system which frees people to live lives greater than would otherwise be possible. It is simple: all are assigned a role, a name, and with those things, a purpose. Thus named, they are relieved of the burden that comes with uncertainty, with not knowing one's destiny or place. Your role, the role of Tamassran, is that of teacher and leader, a priestlike figure whose foremost task is to be knowledgeable of the Qun and capable of sharing its import with others.
Over the years you have enjoyed teaching Qunari children and the viddethari (or adult, non-Qunari converts), and helping them to learn the ways of the Qun. It is your duty and you have never seen reason to question it, for as promised, it does bring you great confidence and satisfaction.
Ordinarily, one such as you would never leave the sanctity of Par Vollen or Seheron, for the world beyond these holy places is largely made of chaos. Indeed, you have heard that humans, elves and even dwarves outside of your home worship strange deities and vaunt the dead to godhood. Many are left adrift, without purpose, recourse or support. Because of your knowledge of these things, you believe that it is no longer enough to patiently await the conversion of viddethari while lounging in the safety of your homeland.
It is your humble opinion that a necessary part of your role is to go out into the world and seek to spread the teachings of Koslun. You will be the first Tamassran to take these steps but you are hopeful that others will follow, once they see where you have led.
[[Yes. This is the role I was meant to perform, and I will do so. |Tamassran 001]]

This role was given to you by those Tamassrans who came before you, in their wisdom, and so you were raised with the important knowledge and skills of a priest, capable of imparting the wisdom of the Qun to your people and others.
Though it might be viewed as directly in opposition to the demands of the Qun, you also have taken up combat in order to defend your life. You have seen that this is necessary to fulfill your role as a Tamassran, and so you also carry the knowledge of...

Eventually it works, though you are still a bit unsettled.] Whatever else might be the case, your dreams must have been restless, and you conclude this is the source of the issue.
But what were you dreaming about? You can't remember. And why do you find yourself suddenly awake?
You wake up in a cold sweat. You can't remember what your dreams were saying, exactly, but you have the strange feeling that they were full of ominous portent and you feel nervous about what that could mean for you.
You're weary from the previous day's work, but you find yourself roused from your slumber despite your best intentions. It's time to face the day, and this particular day has, regretfully, come-- though you wanted to ward it off.It is a fine, late autumn day, and you are on the hunt with your closest companion, Tamlen. He is scouting ahead, while you check for signs of any trespass on the land near the Clan's Aravels. As you return from another victorious hunt, you couldn't be happier. You march your horse proudly towards the stables, waving to the knights practicing in the training grounds and proclaiming to them loudly that they'll eat well tonight. You have successfully slain another boar, and the first hint of winter's chill is strong in the air today.
$dogname is prancing along, doing the best she can to keep up with you.
The skies are cloudy and it looks like rain-- must be Ferelden, eh? Today's looking bleaker than some parts of your past, though, because with the death of your mother, your family's shop has just closed down, reclaimed by the local debt collectors to try to pay off some loans your elder sister had taken out in a futile effort to hire a healer for your mother.
Tonight there is a feast in your honor, so of course you are currently in your personal suite, dressing up in your finest armor to look the part. It's another day, another job, and another unwanted lecture from your mother about how disappointed she is in you and Rica. Business is booming of late, as you peddle your wares throughout the Free Marches. Things are looking up for you, $name Orzedan! But you've caught wind of a possible avenue of trade that you just can't resist, so while you would normally be on to Ostwick, this time of year, right now you're headed for Starkhaven. Today smells like trouble, you think to yourself even as you're waking up. It's a brisk day in Par Vollen, the lingering chill of winter still on the spring air. Wind whips through the ferns outside your small room's window, sending the smell of the nearby sea dancing through the room. Today is, at last, the eve of your daring undertaking.
Today, you will take ship to the Free Marches, in Thedas. From there, you hope to travel the world.
(link: "I want to take a last look around my room.")[You take a last, nostalgic look around your room, the place which has been your home for most of your life. Many years have you tended the garden growing in your window sill, seen to its flourishing life and praised its dedication to its purpose. Your simple bed, once too big for you, is now too small, though you have never felt particularly in need of more. The simple, geometric pattern, stitched upon the sheets, still feels comfortingly smooth when you lift them to press to your face, and breathe in the scent of home one last time. (if: $sight is not "blind")[Your walls have been painted with the teachings of Koslun, and your books of personal study are neatly stored in your small shelf.](else:)[Your books and other items are still arranged as always, along the wall where you can find them when needed.]]
Your necessary clothing, herbs, rations, and coinage are packed and ready. It is time for you to go to the docks, before any of your compatriots realize your absence is unusual and come to investigate.

[[Okay, anything else?]](set: $fullbody to "chronic fatigue")You experience chronic fatigue often and without warning, and this can interfere quite severely with your ability to maintain a daily routine. At the moment you use a tea brewed from a mixture of Ephedra, a spindly green plant native to Rivain. It helps stimulate your body and fights off the sleep urges. Alternately, you sometimes chew on tangy rashvine seeds, which help to keep you wakeful without making you quite so over-alert as the tea tends to do. These two treatments, combined with regular naps scheduled throughout your day to help lessen the strain on your body, do a fabulous job in improving your schedule.
Both the needed seeds and the Ephedra tea can be purchased even in small towns, so you are confident of your continued ability to provide yourself this needed care.
[[Okay, anything else?]](set: $fullbody to "chronic fatigue and pain")You experience chronic pain and fatigue, which often strike simultaneously or very close together. Naturally, it is necessary to plan your schedule carefully so that you can appropriately deal with these problems when you need to.
You have several tools to manage these symptoms, which you can take in combination. There are some salves which you apply during bouts of extreme pain, which are formed through use of pulp from Prophet's Laurel. Additionally, you drink a fine Ephedra tea to help improve your alertness, and add crushed elfroot leaves on days when the pain is bad to combat both symptoms at once.
Elfroot and Prophet's Laurel are, fortuitously, exceedingly common here, and Ephedra tea can be purchased even in small towns, so you are confident of your continued ability to provide yourself this needed care.
