From within the royal chamber you sit listening to the King, your father, telling a story of his childhood to the royal family. You cherish the kings stories, though you doubt all of them are true (father did tend to exaggerate, you chuckle to yourself). As the king carries on however, a dull rumbling takes grip of the castle and soon begins to grow into a violent tremmoring. A disgusting roar erupts through the halls followed by a piercing assemblage of screams of everyone in the castle. The screams give way to many abhorrent sounds that shake you to your very core, but just as soon as the madness starts, the castle falls eerily silent. Everything stays silent for a moment as the dust settles. The silence is then pierced by the sound of screams echoing through the many corridors, but this wasn't like the ones before, the screams are accompanied by various shrieks and inhuman groans.
The king gives you a stern yet concerned look and you know what you must do.
[[Open the door and investigate]]
You cautiously creep to the door and gently push the door open. The air is thick in the short cobblestone corridor leading to the grand hall. The once welcoming corridor is now host to an ominous fog that chills to the bone with every breath. Corpses of the guards that once protected these halls are strew about the hall with traces of viscera coating even the banners that hang from the high ceilings.
It becomes clear that there are no survivors left in the castle, all that is left is the empty silence and the occasional inhuman shriek as the castle becomes host to some sort of new threat.
A strange darkness envelops the corridor leading from the royal chambers down to the grand hall, and in the darkness you spot something crawling. An unidentifiable mass seems to be taking hold in the grand hall and spreading fast.
[[Report the news to the king]]
"I see," says the king furrowing his brow, "The situation sounds dire indeed... I hate to ask this of my own son, but the kingdom is counting on your success in this mission. I am but an old soul, and I do not possess the strength that I once did. I need you to investigate what vile creatures are roaming these once proud halls and find a way to send them back from whence they came."
You simply nod in agreement and think to yourself about your father, after the way he saved you from the streets when you were just a young child and took you in as his own flesh and blood, you would not want anything to happen to him, or even his kingdom.
"Although I am unsure of the exact origin of this mysterious threat, to shake the castle to its very core, it must have emanated from somewhere below the Grand Hall, that is the most central point of our castle. Please... stop whatever is happening before it can leave the grounds of the castle... I have a terrible feeling that this is something to do with the dark arts that used to be practiced in Thulheim, and there is no controlling that power."
As you begin to walk away and start your journey, the king interupts:
"And please be careful son... Although the kingdom and castle are important to me... I don't know what I would do if I lost you."
[[Exit the Royal Chambers and begin your quest]]
As you leave the royal chambers, you hear the door lock and some heavy shuffling, probably a barricade to keep the royal family safe. You venture down the cold hallway, now rich with the stench of death.
You continue moving down the corridor until you approach the grand staircase, the hall opens up to a horrific view.
The grand hall was once a proud place where the usual hustle and bustle of the kingdom took place. It was the lifeblood of the kingdom, but not any more. Now it was some sort of disfigured monument to the old Thulheim, proving the ancient legends of dark sorceries and other dimensions to be true.
The pillars scattered about the enormously vacant hall are now coated with disgusting tendrils that pulse and writhe with movement. They appear to reach out and grow with every pulse, surely if this is not stopped, they will envelope the entire castle.
[[Proceed down the stairs]]
As you proceed down the stairs, you look around.
The grand hall acts as one of the last bastions of the castle itself. Though traces of the new inhuman threat have taken hold here, the strange pustules and growths seem to lie dormant for now. The grand hall stands as the tallest room of the castle located at its most central point. The deep chamber houses the abandoned gilded thrones of the royalty, now coated in mysterious viscera that hint at the horrors that lurk elsewhere in the castle. The once proud marble hall houses four large chamber doors surrounding the thrones which lead to the far corners of the castle, the servant’s quarters, the library, the dining hall, and the “trophy room”.
The grand staircase, once covered in a vivid tapestry is now barricaded by all of the family relics and statues that once lined the hall. The hanging tapestries are now coated in blood and various other viscous substances. There appears to be a corpse that stands out from the other lacerated bodies near just towards the cellar door with some sort of idol in its possession. Out of the corner of your eye, the idol almost seems to waver and change.
[[Approach the corpse]]
You decide that the best course of action is to investigate the idol itself, it almost seems to call out to you in the darkness. The corpse itself is wearing a strange outfit, almost ritualistic in appearance, perhaps this person brought this fate upon the castle, but why did they perish as well. Could they not control the powers of the old kingdom?
In the the grasp of the corpse lies a small idol. Somehow, despite the decaying state of the bodies and the various innards that now coat the hall, the idol is immaculate. The small statue appears to be of some sort of foreign deity, perhaps an ancient relic of another time. The figure carries with it a certain nostalgia almost as if you recognize the abhorrent carving of the beast it portrays. The cool stone of the figure appears to heat up at the slightest touch. The base of the otherworldly statue has four small indentations seemingly hungry for what was once occupying their space.
[[Reach for the Idol]]
The idol calls for you, and as you reach out to retrieve it, an electric jolt runs through your entire body as if connecting you to the idol.
The current also gives way to a vision, at first the vision appears to be of some form of ritual taking place in the basement of the castle. A woman appears to be leading the ritual, praying to the idol which begins to vibrate. The vibrations spread to the woman who shakes with tremors as her prayer escalates in intensity.
As the tremors give way, so too does the woman's flesh, it transforms into an abominable conglomerate of misshapen bones and flesh. The woman's prayer gives way to screams that grow more guttural as her form betrays her.
Finally you see that the creature before you is no longer her, the tremors that once were contained in the idol, now spread to the castle as a flash of light opens up before the beast. Through the unearthly light comes more disgusting creations, unlike any creatures that you have seen before, the monsters that come from the portal must have been the source of the screams that you heard which means...
The creatures are now in the castle.
You suddenly feel electrified again as when you first touched the idol, and you vision gives way just as fast as it had come on. With this strange new feeling comes with it a voice...
[[Listen to the voice]]
"Hello? Can you hear me?"
"What are you? How are you able to speak to me?" You reply cautiously and question the idol.
"I have made a huge mistake.." The voice responds. "Please, you have to stop it from taking over"
"What are you talking about??" You exclaim.
"I was decieved by the entity that is taking hold of this castle... I was tricked into letting it into our world, I had no idea what I was meddling with. You have to stop it, you have to stop what I have started, you must defeat The Voice!"
"Wait... you are the woman from my vision! You brought this apocalypse to this castle! You killed all of those people! How could you?!"
"I was lied to by the entity, it came to me when I was a child and called itself 'The Voice'. It promised me power and a home if I could just help it achieve form in our world... I just wanted a place to call my own... I never wanted this to happen, I never wanted these people to die."
"Well then how am I supposed to stop it?" You question
"The ritual. If performed again, we may be able to seal the monster away and shut the portal to its world before it grows massive enough to escape the castle."
"Then what are we waiting for, just tell me what I need to do."
"Unfortunately, it is not that simple, the idol as it is now is incomplete, there were four stones that were in the base of the idol. Just before I was detached from my body, before it turned into that... thing... I saw the stones gravitate toward the monsters that spewed forth from the portal, if I am correct, the beings that came forth act as guradians to the stones. We need to destroy the beings and reunite the stones to put an end to this."
"I suppose it is up to me then to fell these beasts..."
"The first one headed off to the eastern wing of the castle, my guess is it is in the library."
"Let us start there then, we need to put an end to this as quickly as possible before the monster spreads its dominion any further than it already has, these repugnant tendrils are growing by the second."
[[Venture to the Library]]
The hallway to the library is filled with a revolting maze of clinging webs. As you carefully navigate the labyrinth of corpses and destroyed bookshelves, the hall gives way to the once proud library holding all of the knowledge of the old kingdom. The bookcases are coated in the same web that impeded the hallway, destroying many of the precious tomes held here. Many scholars lay dead on the ground and some hang from the walls in horrific cocoons.
The only remnant of the life that inhabited this hall is the cobblestone fireplace which stands ablaze despite the consuming darkness. The fireplace would serve as a beacon of hope blazing from across the room if not for one thing…
Hanging above the fireplace at the center of the large circular corridor is a horrible conglomeration of legs. Far worse than any spider you have seen, this abomination shrieks furiously as it sees you enter its new domain with its many dead eyes. As you approach the center of the room, the many legs begin to carefully crawl towards you with intent to kill. Much like the spiders you have witnessed around the kingdom, the monster approaches cautiously, it is a predator and it moves as if to ambush you, staying in one place could prove dangerous. The creature has the high ground; perhaps you could turn its surroundings against it somehow.
[[Climb the Web]]
[[Move to the Fireplace]]
You decide that the best course of action is to get a higher vantage point. Scanning the room quickly, you find a loose portion of web hinging near the fireplace; you sheath your sword and climb the web. Luckily the gantlets that you are wearing are somewhat resistant to the web.
Reaching the highest point on the bookshelves, you realize just how staggeringly large the library was, it’s a shame that the castle has come to such a state. You can’t stay in thought for too long as you notice the monster quickly approaching.
You are now much closer to the beast, but you must act quickly, you are now fighting on its level, should you try and brave the heights of the web and fight the demon, or do you continue looking for another solution. Though fighting head on can be risky, inactivity will most likely lead to your demise as well.
[[Check your surroundings]]
[[Fight it head on]]
You decide that the best course of action is to approach from another angle. You quickly circle the room to the fireplace on the opposite end. Standing this close makes you realize just how large the fireplace is, you feel the heat radiating out and warming your skin, and this gives you an idea.
Looking around, you notice a strand of web hanging very near. You grab the strand and prepare yourself for what you are about to do, with the many old tomes collected here, you know this will be fast, but what consequence does it carry?
You take the strand to the fireplace and drop the stray fibers into the open flame. Working quickly, the fire creeps up the strand soon connecting to the rest of the web. The horrible creature backs off to the center of the web as the flame begins to engulf not only the web, but also the bookcases that surround it. The shrieks of the creature escalate in intensity as it becomes surrounded in a ring of fire. The supporting strands of web quickly disintegrate and the web becomes incapable of supporting the creature’s weight. It crashes to the ground; the shockwave of it hitting the ground rattles the entire room shaking the very walls. As the flames crawl up the sides of the room, a bookcase is shaken loose and tips towards the creature. With one final shriek, the creatures life is put to an end as the weight of centuries of knowledge topple onto the creature’s body. The pressure of the bookcase hitting its mark is enough to separate its head from its body. As a torrent of blood surges forth, a small glint catches your eye. You see a brilliant crimson stone, matching the color of the blood around it.

You decide that the best course of action is to approach from another angle. You quickly circle the room to above the fireplace on the opposite end. Standing this close makes you realize just how large the fireplace is. You see a few supports to the large web in the corner close to the fireplace.
You take sword in hand and begin swinging with all of your might to shred the webs into pieces. The monster shrieks angrily and begins to charge at you, but the weakened supports cause the web to give way as it reaches the center of the room.

You decide that the best course of action is to waste no time and to fight the demon head on. With a valiant cry, you charge forth as the monster shambles towards you.
You take sword in hand and begin swinging with all of your might to shred creature to pieces. The monster shrieks angrily and begins to charge at you, the force of the creature is immense as it lurches forth. Although you block its charge with your shield, the sheer size of the beast breaches your defenses and its large and vile pincers pierce your left hand. Immediately your shield falls to the ground as a numbing mist seems to take hold of your hand. This must be how all of the scholars went, cold and unfeeling. But you will not fall that easy, with the demon this close, you thrust your sword violently into the creature’s eyes and it reels back taking your sword with it. The creature writhes around in agony and soon slips off of its own web.

You unsheathe your sword from the creature's now empty and dead eyes and grab your left hand, the creatures venom has taken its use from you, but you must press on.
[[Grab the Red Stone|Red 2]]
The small stone seems to fit into the base of the idol which takes the gemstone hungrily as you attempt to place it in its original home. Its brilliant crimson glow bathes the monstrosities that lurk through the chambers in an ominous shade of red that only highlights their grotesque features.
“The next monster lurks in the northern end of the castle, in the king’s trophy room.” The woman informs you.
“Why did you listen to that voice, why would you have started all of this” you ask.
“Now is not the time for explanations, we must first defeat these monsters, then maybe we can talk”
Without a response you begin moving to the northern end of the castle through the grand hall. The organic growth covering the pillars of the room is still spreading, you must end this quickly.

[[Head to the trophy room|Trophy 3]]
Your approach to the trophy room is accompanied by many horrific grunts and other guttural sounds ahead of you, there are many corpses scattering these hallways, but their deaths seems to have been much more violent…
There are various bodies with heads or limbs missing, whatever lurks ahead is less stealthy and much more of a brute.
As the hallway leads to the trophy room, you begin to see the silhouettes of the many animal heads mounted on the walls and the other awards and riches collected within this hall’s lengthy marble chambers. Among these silhouettes is one that does not belong here. At first, the form appears almost human, two legs, two arms, and a head, but it soon takes notice of you and turns around. With its back no longer to you, you see the beast’s face, unlike a human, it lacks all features besides a mouth, but this creatures mouth is a horrible blood drenched mangled mess of teeth. It lets out one final roar before breaking into a sprint straight for you. There is little time to react now.

Seeing the menace barreling toward you, you decide that the best course of action is to raise your guard and prepare for the worst. You stand your ground and plant your feet to support your shield. As the beast runs at you, you draw your sword and strike. The beast makes contact with you as you swing your sword down onto its head. The impact against the shield is fierce and pushes you backwards a few feet towards the wall, but your guard is unbroken. As your sword makes contact with the beasts face, it clamps its jaws closed around your weapon. The force of the creature’s mandible snaps your sword in half. The creature is forced to swallow the blade and is taken aback. It stands for a few seconds gurgling and spitting angrily as it thrashes around the room, but soon its saliva runs red and its angry spit projects its own blood. The blade it swallowed was tearing it apart from the inside out and it soon collapsed to the ground. With one final sputtering noise, it spit out a small purple gem.

Seeing the menace barreling toward you, you decide that the best course of action is to dive out of the way and search for any other options. With a quick roll, the monster barely misses you and instead slams into the wall you were standing in front of. The crater the monster left was a pretty good indicator of just how powerful it was, but this gives you an idea. You sprint to the back half of the room in front of the boor mounted on the wall and taunt the monster. The beast is practically steaming with rage and it charges straight for you. Just like last time, you barely escape with a quick roll, but instead of a wall, the beast is now charging straight for the monstrous tusks that are mounted on the wall. You watch as it desperately tries to stop, but its momentum was too great and it charges right into the tusk.
A glorious spray of crimson coats the room. It manages to pull itself off of the tusk and stands for a few seconds gurgling and spitting angrily as it thrashes around the room with an enormous hole in its chest, but soon its saliva runs red and its angry spit projects its own blood. With one final sputtering noise, it spit out a small purple gem.
The room is utterly destroyed with the foundation shaken to its core, but you consider the alternatives and are happy to escape with your life.

The mysterious glint of this amaranthine stone seems to hold within it some sort of eldritch truth. Gazing into the gemstone is like being surrounded by the void itself. It is best to place it into the idol where it belongs lest you be lost within its nether grasp.
“The stones are powerful are they not?” questions the woman, “This is the power that The Voice told me that I could control, but clearly, it is best not to be consumed by it like I was. Let us move on. The next beast should be in the western portion of the castle, the servant’s quarters hosted many lives, and my guess is that that is where the next creature would strike.”
“Understood.” you simply mutter as you trek back through the grand hall, which like last time is even more overgrown by hideous fleshy growths. They now seem to pulse larger as if building up to something, what are they for?

The servant’s quarters proved to be a much different situation than the rest of the castle so far. There were still the corpses of the many servants that you used to know growing up here, but they each had plants growing out of them, these plants were very strange and seemed to be otherworldly, but they were strangely beautiful. You could not spend very much time appreciating the life that had sprung up here though, as in the middle of the cobblestone room, a large tree was growing. But this tree proved to be much less beautiful than the flowers that bloomed around it.
At the core of the tree was a mysterious almost humanlike figure embedded in the bark. Its eyes were as hollow as the many trees that surrounded the castle, but something was different. The figure began to move inside of the tree and with it the tiles coating the ground shifted and crunched. Underneath, the roots of the tree began to squirm and writhe around. At first it was almost entrancing the way they moved around, but that was soon interrupted as the face in the tree let out a squeal that echoed through the room. The roots and branches of the tree moved as spears aimed right at you. You have to act fast.

The servant’s quarters proved to be a much different situation than the rest of the castle so far. There were still the corpses of the many servants that you used to know growing up here, but they each had plants growing out of them, these plants were very strange and seemed to be otherworldly, but they were strangely beautiful. You narrowly avoid the volley of natural spears and charge toward the heart of the tree. You reflexes prove to be useful in getting you to the middle of the tree with relatively little harm to you. You reach the core of the tree and stare it face to face. You grab its chest and attempt to rip it apart from the inside much like you did to the last abomination. With all of your might, you successfully pry open its chest, but unfortunately, that is just about all of the damage you are able to inflict.
As you pry open the inside of the tree, you see a very similar sight, Inside, the tree has even more branches, and like the ones you just avoided, they are all pointing right at you now. At this distance they are unavoidable and before you can even blink the branches move as quick as lightning piercing your chest over and over. An eye for an eye it would seem… As you fall to the floor from the pain, you can see the same wildlife already overtaking your body, reclaiming it. The life drains from inside you as it sprouts on top of you coating you in a wild grave.

The split branches reveal to you a small stone in the very heart of the tree that appears overgrown. You grab the stone and pull as hard as you can; the stone goes flying as the vines separate from the stone. The tree begins to struggle less and less, the life is draining from it fast and the tree shrivels and darkens. An empty husk remains in the room, a monument to the destruction of the people that once lived in here.

The roughness of the green stone is much unlike the other stones; its mossy-like coating seems to hold the very power of the tree that was felled in obtaining it. Upon placing it in the idol, the stray roots of the stone seem to take hold cementing it into its socket.
“There should only be one more stone, the only other part of the castle that we have not explored is the dining hall, there we should find the last stone and we could put an end to this once and for all.”
This time going back through the main hall, you can see the pustules and tendrils have covered the entirety of the room, inside the pustules you can see the embryo of new monsters and more horrors. This thing is breeding an entirely new set of creatures. It will certainly take over if you do not put an end to this soon.

The hallway leading to the dining hall was coated in a thick black sludge that randomly lurched and bubbled up as you passed over it. Entering the dining hall led to quite the sight. At the center of the lengthy room, lay a thick concentration of the sludge, as you walked closer, humanoid forms appeared and disappeared on top of it. The sludge took notice of you entering its domain and began to slide towards you from the opposite end of the room much like a slug creeps forwards. The room was coated in this same sludge that seemed to make way for the larger mass. The long dining table served as the conglomerate’s platform and it swallowed up the dining utensils and any stray corpses that it left behind. The only thing that was not coated in this thick sludge was the large antique crystal chandelier which glittered in the light of the dining hall. The slime was closing in and it was time for action, fighting the monster head on could be dangerous, perhaps the rope to the chandelier could be useful, or perhaps it would prove just as dangerous.

The sludge proves to only impede progress with its viscous sticky nature; you decide that it must be stopped at all costs, as you draw your sword to fight the sludge, some of the herbs from earlier fall into the stagnant pools around the room, the second the herbs touch the puddles, the sludge recoils as a strange growling noise is heard. This is all the sign that you need of what to do. You ready the bag of herbs and approach the enormous mass of sludge. It misshapes into many weapon-like tendrils to fight and consume you, you hold up your sword and cut them down as they strike, the excess sludge falling to the ground before reshaping and returning to the mass with each strike, until its strikes leave it open and defenseless, you toss the bag of herbs into the central mass and the sludge can’t help but absorb it. It retracts violently and swells up. The mass keeps swelling filling the room and expanding. Finally with a loud crack, the mass erupts violently around the room, knocking you back into the chandelier which pierces your leg with a loud slash. The stone is the only thing left of the sludge as the excess mass seemingly melts into nothingness. Though you can only hobble to the stone, you are again happy to just be alive.

You soon find your technique fading fast as you tire yourself out. Eventually you collapse as the sludge seems to never tire, instead of spearing you with its tendrils, it sees your weakened state and slowly creeps over you. A cold washes over you as you are slowly surrounded and you take your last breath before you are completely engulfed. With no air, you last only a minute before you black out and become just another skeleton giving form to this beast.

The sludge proves to only impede progress with its viscous sticky nature; you decide that it must be stopped at all costs, you draw your sword to fight the sludge, and the sludge merely reshapes itself into a host of pointed tendrils.

The sludge proves to only impede progress with its viscous sticky nature; you decide that the chandelier could be a useful weapon. You sheath your weapon and begin to climb the rope. The slime appears to take notice of your activities and bubble upwards in response. It appears to collect all of the sludge throughout the room in an attempt to reach up to you. You quicken your pace until you reach the chain holding the chandelier. Just as the monster bubbles enough to reach up to you, you detach the chain from the chandelier, and in an instant the chandelier comes crashing down on top of the bubbling mass. The creature is both crushed and set ablaze at the same time until the tar melts away leaving only the skeletons of the people it had consumed and a brilliant blue stone.
The crash of the chandelier destroyed what little was left intact of the room and sets the residual tar ablaze. This hall would see no more grand parties or happy family meals.

The deep cerulean hue of this gem brings to mind the thoughts of a never ending sea. Perhaps the monstrosity that possessed this relic once dwelled in its own aquatic nightmare. The idol pulses with the power of the sea as you place the gem in its socket.
As the final gem is placed into the mysterious idol, a nebulous glow takes hold in its eyes. The idol practically is vibrating with power at the reunion of these ancient relics. Perhaps this is the power that can put an end to the horrors that have taken hold, but the true intentions of the idol are unknown.
“That is all of the stones together, we can beat it now, and we can stop the voice.”
“I suppose it is off to the cellar then, to where you started this whole mess…”
“I-I was just a child when the voice first came to me, I was alone and abandoned at a young age and sought any way to stay alive, I came across dark magic and at first I was successful, the voice contacted me after one of my incantations and offered me the skills I needed to survive. It provided for me at first, I had no idea that I was simply a pawn in its scheme. I didn’t mean for it to take over like this. That is why I bound my soul to this relic before it erased me, I had to make sure I could help to defeat it, even if I am just a guide, you probably wouldn’t understand being raised in a castle like this.”
“I understand completely, I was abandoned as a child as well, and like you I too did anything I could to stay alive, Hell, I broke into the castle just to sneak a bite to eat, it was because of this that I ended up here, the king took me in much like the voice provided for you, we were both at the mercy of the world. What is important now is that we beat this monster and end all of this, let’s go.”

In the cellar you are greeted by more disgusting pustules and growths, but down in the epicenter of the event, everything has been taken over completely. The entire room is made of the flesh that surrounds the walls, it all culminated in what you can only assume used to be the woman. Her body is no more; in its place is an enormous mouth with endless rows of fangs. You can only guess that this is the voice’s true form.
In front of the disgusting wall of flesh before you is the summoning circle from which it all started. As you approach the circle with the completed idol, the flesh begins speaking.
“So you have made it past my elite guard… How unfortunate, well as you can see, I am but a vessel, a host to the new world. Though you may have bested me here today, the war is not over. I am ever growing and changing and even though you might banish me from this world today, know that I am not defeated. Think of what you have been fighting for this whole time, a father that is not truly your own, what sacrifices have you made along the way?
Your sword and status of being a knight have been stripped from you due to your unquestioning loyalty to a petty ruler.
Your struggle in the dining hall was in vain, the halls have been destroyed and with it, any sense of family you have had there, all you have left are your memories.
A king cannot rule with his kingdom in shambles. ”
“I’ve heard enough!!” you shout at the entity, you slam the idol down in the circle. The same rumbling that took hold of the castle at the beginning of this mess begins anew, but this time you are at its center. The woman appears in spirit above the small idol and resumes her chanting that she had performed in your vision.
The rumbling intensifies as it had before and the tendrils appear to be receding from the castle, slowly returning to the monster at its core. Finally the mass returns to the shape of the woman as she once was.
“I thank you for helping me and trusting me, I must apologize for what I have done here, and I am going to ensure that this never happens again.” She looks you in the eye before using her magic to rip the idol into pieces. As the magic tears it apart, the woman’s form is also shredded, and she lets out a single tear before her spirit disappears.
The castle is now completely silent, the nightmare is over, but there is no way that things will be the same again.

Your struggle in the dining hall was in vain, the halls have been destroyed and with it, any sense of family you have had there, all you have left are your memories.
A king cannot rule with his kingdom in shambles.

The library is ablaze, the knowledge with which the king used to rule is completely gone, where is your power without knowledge? ”
