A Smuggler's Year: The Last Job
Before the Hawke Family can enter Kirkwall, they must spend a year in indentured servitude to either Athenril's smuggler gang or a mercenary band. This story takes place at the end of the year if Hawke chose to work for Athenril and the smugglers.
A few world-state questions before we begin:
Who survived the trip to Kirkwall?

[[Onto the story!]]Hawke enters in a little hovel in Darktown that Athenril uses as her base of operations. The hovel seems uninteresting upon first glace. There are a few cots and sleeping mats in the corner next to a chipped water jug. A few wooden crates are set up as a makeshift desk, and more are along that back wall. As Hawke enters the hovel and approaches Athenril, she is moving crates back over a passageway at the back.
[[Approach Athenril]]Athenril grunts with a final shove, and then looks up at Hawke, with a frown.
(if: $Blue is true)[ Hawke: "Athenril, I’m glad I get to see you at least once more." ](if: $Purple is true)[ Hawke: "Why do I get the feeling you didn’t just call me here to say goodbye?" ](if: $Red is true)[ Hawke responds with a matching frown and crossed arms. ]
Athenril informs Hawke that she has one last mission she needs Hawke for. Hawke has the option to either agree to the job right away or get upset with Athenril, because Hawke’s indentured servitude was supposed to be completed by now.
[[Hawke agrees without complaint|"Got the job, then?"]]
[[Hawke confronts Athenril]]
Upon leaving Athenril’s base, a middle-aged woman with a strong Kirkwall accent calls to Hawke. Her name is Nora, and she's been Hawke's smuggling partner for the better part of the year. Nora says that Athenril wants them together on the job, as they’ll need Nora’s familiarity with the city.
[[Ask Nora some questions]]
(if: $Carver is 1)[ [[Go home to get Carver]]] (if: $Bethany is 1)[ [[Go home to get Bethany]]]
Hawke can talk to Nora and ask her some questions about how she'd been. Hawke asks with genuine interest and concern. It's clear these two are at least friendly, if not outright friends.
[[How is your family?]]
[[Why does Athenril want you to come with me?]]
[[What jobs has Athenril had you been running?]]
(if: $Carver is 1)[ [[Go home to get Carver]]] (if: $Bethany is 1)[ [[Go home to get Bethany]]]
Once back at the hovel where the Hawke family lives, Hawke tells Carver and Leandra that Athenril gave them one more job before they have full access to the city and are free of their indentured service. Carver appears eager to go, but Leandra is hesitant to send her youngest son on a potentially dangerous mission. Hawke can either insist on Carver joining the group, or ask Carver what he wants to do.

There's a note of frustration and worry in Nora's voice when she answers you. She says that she's been helping with small jobs. She says she needs this job since Athenril promised her a lot of gold if they succeed.
"And you always succeed," she finishes with a laugh.

If Hawke gets upset, Athenril stands firm, insisting that it has to be Hawke, but not saying anything else. As Hawke leaves, Athenril, with some apology in her voice, swears that this will be the last job and she'll make it worth Hawke's trouble.
[[Hawke departs|"Got the job, then?"]]Carver is irritated by Leandra's fussing, and irritably insists that he's perfectly capable of taking care of himself and aiding Hawke in the job.
[[The party makes their way to Hightown|"So Hawke, what do you know about this job?"]]Leandra makes a final, half-hearted fuss, but then sends her children and Nora on their way.
[[The party makes their way to Hightown|"So Hawke, what do you know about this job?"]]Bethany attempts to sooth Leandra's worries, telling her that she'll be careful. She then faces Hawke, determined. She says that she won't be a burden and Hawke can rely on her.
[[The party makes their way to Hightown|"So Hawke, what do you know about this job?"]]As they depart, Nora asks Hawke about the job they’ve been assigned. Athenril said that some Northerners were traveling through when their goods were confiscated by the Kirkwall Guard. It’s Nora and Hawke’s job to get the goods back and delivered to the Northerners.
[[Nora: "That slippery knife-eared bitch"]]Nora swears, upset that Athenril didn’t tell her directly. When Hawke asks what’s wrong, Nora says that if the Kirkwall Guard has confiscated it, they’ll have to break into the Viscount’s Keep so they can find any clue of where the goods might have been stashed.
[[Hawke: "Are you still in?"]]This is bigger than anything they’ve tackled with Athenril’s smugglers before, and Hawke asks Nora if she’s still okay going though with the job. Nora says that she’s still in. She needs the job and Athenril’s promised to pay her handsomely.
[[Enter Hightown]]
The crew sets off, creeping through Hightown in the dark. It’s surprisingly easy. Even though the estates of the noble and wealthy surround them, the streets are nearly empty. They soon find out why, as they encounter one of Kirkwall’s many gangs. However, except for the thugs, Hawke, Nora, and (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] don’t run into anyone.
[[Approach the Viscount's Keep]]
The Viscount’s Keep is more of a challenge. As Hawke approaches, the Keep towers above the other estates in Hightown. Guards can actually be seen on the walls and by the main door of the keep. Hawke, Nora, and (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany's] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver's] silhouettes are dwarfed by the great building, emphasizing how much bigger this job is than they’re really prepared to take on. The three smugglers are somber and quiet.
Hawke eventually breaks the silence.
(if: $Blue is true)[Hawke, clearly trying to rationalize the size of their task: "I’m sure Athenril wouldn’t have assigned this if she didn’t think we could handle it." ](if: $Purple is true)[ Hawke, glibely: "Next thing you know, she’ll be asking us to break into the Gallows." *Beat* "Perhaps I shouldn’t say that out loud. Don’t want to give her any ideas."](if: $Red is true)[ Hawke gives an irritable sigh: "That *bitch*." ]
[[Turn to Nora]]
Nora gives a weak laugh. Hawke turns to her, and a little desperately, asks if Nora knows any alternate way into the Keep. Nora is quiet for a moment, and then responds that she’s not sure, but most of the estates in Hightown have basements or cellars with doors or windows they could break into.
[[Break into the Keep]]Following Nora around the side of the keep, Hawke and the others do find such an entrance, and clamber in. The cellars are not as heavily guarded as exterior of the Keep, but there are some people around. When they spot Hawke and the party, they attack and Hawke must kill them. There are a few short skirmishes, and they group makes it to the Guard offices, which are thankfully empty for the moment.
[[Spread out and search for any clue about the goods]]Sneaking in, Hawke, Nora, and (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] don’t run into anyone. They rummage through the papers and eventually Nora finds a report that seems to be about the confiscated goods.
Before Hawke can read the note, there’s noise from the nearby barracks, and Hawke, Nora, and(if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] make their escape.

Hawke shrugs and follows. Nora leads them to the docks, and on the way, (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] remarks that they are facing more resistance down here than usual. Nora eventually stops by a warehouse with an noticeably new door. Nora manages to pick the lock and the three venture inside.
[[Search the warehouse]]Like most warehouses in the area, the floor is dirt, but this floor seems particularly trampled. When Hawke brings it up, Nora brushes it off as there must have been many guards taking care of whatever goods they’re here to recover.
As they start journeying into the warehouse, Hawke remarks that Athenril never really said what the goods they were looking for were, and asks Nora if the notes she found in the Keep mentioned anything. Nora, clearly anxious, snaps that they didn’t. This catches both Hawke and (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] by surprise.
[[Talk to Nora]]
Hawke pulls Nora to the side to talk. Nora is clearly anxious and nervous. She only very reluctantly meets Hawke’s eye when pushed.
[[Confront Nora about her odd behavior]]
[[Ask Nora what's bothering her]](set: $norafriend to 0)
"What isn't?" Nora responds harshly. She comments on how the streets to the warehouse district are packed with gangs and mercenaries tonight, which probably has something to do with the goods their trying to retreive.

(if: $norafriend is 1)[Nora sighs and lets the worry show on her face.
Nora: "Also... Remember what I said about my family just barely staying afloat?"
Since the arrival of all the Ferelden refugees, her family's dye business has been hit hard, since travel in and out of the city is harder. They rely on Nora's contacts with Athenril to get cheap ingredients so they can stay afloat. So she *needs* to get the job done right.]
[[Hawke tells her she can leave now if she's worried]]Nora says that she's still in this. She needs to see this through, she seems to regain her composure. (if: $norafriend is 1)[ She promises that if they get through this job, Hawke better go drinking with her (and pay), if Hawke thinks their sorry Southern liver can take it. Hawke scoffs and agrees to drinks.]
[[Investigate the warehouse]]
Nora seems calmer as they head back into the deeps of the warehouse. They search all the rooms and find that it’s empty. No traps, no enemies, no loot. Occasionally, there is a thumping sound and muffled shouts. The team races back the beginning of the building, and fight a small group of bandits trying to follow them. Nora suggests barricading the door behind them. It’ll stop any more bandits from coming in after them. (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] points out that it also means they’re cut off from backup if things get ugly.
[[Hawke: Barricade the door]]
[[Hawke: Leave the door open]](set: $barricade to 1)
Hawke, Nora, and (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] manage to get the door shut and bolted.
[[Return to searching the warehouse]]
Hawke, Nora, and (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] close the door but do not bolt it.
[[Return to searching the warehouse]] Hawke expresses frustration with the warehouse, having found nothing, but with the pounding and shouts coming more and more often. Finally, (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] call Hawke and Nora over to a corner, where the floor is particularly worn. Nora mentions that it’s probably a false wall, and it turns out she’s right.
Hawke comments:(if: $Blue is true)[ "The guard really didn’t want anyone to find this." ](if: $Purple is true)["Who wants to go into the creepy tunnel first? Anyone? Anyone at all?" Hawke gives a heavy sigh when no one answers. ](if: $Red is true)[ "You only hide something this well if it’s dangerous or valuable."]
[[Enter the tunnel]]
Hawke steps into the tunnel and Nora hands them a lantern. Then tunnel slopes down at a sharp angle. Footsteps echo around them, creating the illusion of more than three people walking. A whispering noise starts, barely perceptible, but getting louder. Eventually, (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] asks if that’s people they’re hearing. Hawke says it could be running water.
[[Continue down the tunnel]]
The group keeps winding down the tunnel unopposed. (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] brings up the whispering noise again.
(if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver]: "That doesn’t sound like water."
Hawke: "And what if it is people? The cargo we’re responsible for is down there."
Nora, very hesitantly: "And what if the people are our cargo?"
[[Down, Down, Down]]
Hawke continues to lead the group down the path, which finally levels out and begins to widen. Eventually, the tunnel opens into a large cavern. On the other side of the wall are somewhere between ten and twenty elves. They are in rags, many of them are coughing, and they shy away from Hawke and the group as they enter.
[[They must be the "goods" Athenril wanted]]
The group stops short and stares at the pitiful huddle of bodies against the wall.
(if: $Blue is true)[ Hawke: "Athenril wanted me to deliver slaves?" ](if: $Purple is true)[ Hawke: "I knew when Athenril asked for “one last job” I should have been worried." ](if: $Red is true)[ "Slaves. Of course its slaves." ]
(if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver]: "It explains why the Guard was involved."
Nora: "They paid Athenril a fortune. She’ll pay us a fortune if we follow through."
Hawke turns to Nora, who won't make eye contact.
[[1. This isn't about money]]
[[2. You can't be serious]]
[[3. We don't deal in slaves]]
[[4. How much of a fortune are we talking?]]Hawke: "It’s not about how much we’re being paid! We can’t just send these people off to be enslaved."
Nora: "And why not? We're just following our orders."
[[Hawke glares at Nora with clenched jaw|You've killed people for less]]Hawke, with a hint of anger in their voice: "I’m sorry; I wasn’t informed that it was compromise-our-morals-day. There's no way we're following through on this!"
Nora, angrily: "Don't get high and mighty with me, Hawke!"
[[You've killed people for less<-Hawke's usual smile drops]] Hawke, decisively: "So we send them off to Tevinter to be slaves? I won’t allow it."
Nora, disgust filling her voice: "You won’t allow it??"
[[You've killed people for less<-Hawke's fists clench]] Nora, anger pouring through her: "Since when do you have such moral problems with our work? Maker’s sake, you’ve killed people! You killed guards just to get here tonight? And this is what you get hung up on."
Nora glares and shakes her head. There is an awkward moment of silence before Nora takes a deep breath and asks, “Well, what about Athenril? We don’t get this job done, she’s not going to be happy.”
[[1. I'm done working for her]]
[[2. She can sod right off]]
[[3. She better watch out]]Hawke speaks with a hint of regret: "Athenril has done a lot for me." *With finality* "So I leave. Athenril never contacts me again and we go our separate ways. No one gets hurt."
[[Nora's anger starts to boil over]]Hawke: "If Athenril has a problem, she can eat my entire round, perky arse."
[[Nora's anger starts to boil over]]Hawke, speaking darkly: "If Athenril dares give me trouble, I'll give her a lot worse right back."
[[Nora's anger starts to boil over]]Nora gets visibly angry at Hawke’s response. She’s just barely keeping herself from exploding.
Nora: "Not all of us are so talented that we can get away with that! What about me? What about my family? Without being on Athenril’s good side, we can’t get our supplies!" (if: $norafriend is 1)[ Her voice takes on a desperate quality "Hawke, I know you care about them. You ask about them every time we see each other. Just help me finish this."]
[[1. I can help you, Nora]]
[[2. You'll think of something]]
[[3. Not my problem]]Hawke, trying to inject as much assurance as possible into the words: "You don't need her, Nora. You'll see, I can--"
Nora, disbelieving: "You can what? Protect me? You may be my friend, Hawke, but I won't sacrifice my family for your morals."
[[Nora: "Please..."]]Hawke, encouraging: "Come on, Nora. You're family's bright and talented. I'm sure you'll all manage." *Beat* "Somehow."
Nora, angry: "Will you take this seriously for once? If Athenril knows what I did, my whole family will be on the streets! Or working at the Rose. I can’t do that to them for the sake of your morals."
[[Nora: "Please..."]] Hawke, the threat clear: "Don't push me, Nora."
Nora, her voice loses it's anger. She sounds resigned when she speaks: "I know what happens when people push you, Hawke. They end up ina gutter or washed up on the docks a week later. But I won't let you put my family on the streets just because our work got dirty."
[[Nora: "Please..."]] Nora, getting more desperate: "I’ll beg Hawke. Please. Just finish the job with me. Help me return the slaves. It’ll be the last bit of business with Athenril you’ll ever do. You’ll save my sisters. Please."

It seems like it could have easily been us in their place."

Nora, trembling with relief: "You’ll do it then? You’ll save my family?"
[[1. Of course]]
[[2. I can't refuse you]]
[[3. You owe me]]
Hawke: "Come on, Nora. We're not slavers. We're freeing the slaves."
Nora becomes distant and her jaw sets. When she speaks, her voice is hollow.
Nora: "I can't let you do that."
Nora draws her daggers and faces Hawke. A short fight ensues, but Nora falls quickly.
[[She's dead]]Hawke, earnestly: "You're my friend, Nora. I'll do anything to make sure my friends are safe."
Nora, on the verge of tears: "You have my gratitude, Hawke. I knew you wouldn't let me down."
[[Take the slaves and leave]]Hawke, a smile returning to their eyes and voice: "Oh, I just can't say know to those big puppy eyes. And you know how we Fereldens are with dogs."
Nora gives a slightly strained laugh: "Well, what ever went on in your unfathomable mind to make you do this, I am grateful."
[[Take the slaves and leave]]Hawke, voice hard, anger running just under the surface: "You and Athenril are in my debt. I shall collect on it one day."
Nora nods and says: "Understood."
[[Take the slaves and leave]]Hawke looks over at the elven slaves still huddled against the walls. They stare at Hawke in silence, their expressions flat and unreadable. Their staring goes on for an uncomfortably long time, until Hawke looks away.
The slaves offer no resistance as they are taken away. It's clear they have no will to struggle against their fate.
[[Return to the warehouse]]Hawke, (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver], and Nora are leaving the tunnel with the slaves in tow; there is a loud noise from the distance. As the group steps out, back into the warehouse.

After Hawke fends them off, the scene cuts and it’s implied that Nora and Hawke take the slaves back to the slavers.
[[Collect Athenril's reward]]As Hawke walks in, Athenril is sitting on her makeshift desk of crates. She hands them over to Hawke.
Athenril: "You're now free to enter Kirkwall. Legally. Well, sort of legally. At least they won't kick you out now."
[[Hawke leaves without another word|End]]
[[Hawke talks to Athenril again]]
When Hawke doesn't leave, Athenril looks up.
Athenril, defensively: "You've got your papers. What more do you want?"
[[1. Why?]]
[[2. Actually...nothing more]]
[[3. Watch your back]]Hawke leaves Athenril's hovel and heads off towards Lowtown and the next chapter of life in Kirkwall.
Hawke sighs then says, "Athenril, you've always been fair with me. When you took me under your wing, you swore we never dealt in slaves. That was true until yesterday. Why now?"
Athenril sizes up Hawke before giving a sad sigh, "Times are changing in the city, Hawke. We'll all have to do terrible things to get by in the coming years. I wish you luck."
[[Depart from Athenril's for good|End]]
Hawke gives a nervous laugh, then speaks way too quickly: "You know what? I don't. Well! I'll just see myself out. Write to me." *Beat* "Actually..." *more nervous laughter* "No. I'll write *you*! How does that sound?"
Athenril, irritated: "I assume you know how to leave."
Hawke: "Of course"
[[Depart Athenril's for good|End]] Hawke, deadly serious: "I don't appreciate being misled of lied to. The only reason I went along with your little slave job was because I knew what you'd do to Nora if we let them go. Next time I catch wind of you smuggling slaves in this city, I'm coming for you."
Athenril, showing no sign of being intimidated responds sarcastically: "Thanks for the warning. I'll keep it in mind.
[[Depart Athenril's for good|End]] (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany, horrified: "Maker! We killed her! We killed our own friend.] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver, like he's about to throw up: "That was barely a fight at all. We just...cut her down like she was nothing."]
Hawke walks over to the corpse and shuts Nora's dead, staring eyes.
[[1. We couldn't abandon the slaves]]
[[2. So much for friends]]
[[3. She doesn't matter]]Hawke, desperately trying to justify what happened: "She left us no choice. We couldn't let slavers take these people. I'm just sorry it came to this."
[[Look at the slaves]]Hawke gives an overly dramatic sigh: "And I had just spent all that silver on matching friendship scarves." Hawke starts to giggle a little manically. "Whatever shall I do with them now?"
[[Look at the slaves]] Hawke, snapping at (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver]: "She wanted to give these people back into slavery! She got what was coming for her."
[[Look at the slaves]] Eventually, Hawke looks up at the elves. They stare warily and stay silent. After a moment, one of them gives a nod of thanks. They follow Hawke willingly through the tunnel.
Hawke: "Come on. Let’s get these people back to the guard. They’ll be safer there."
[[Return up the tunnel]]
Hawke and (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] are leaving the tunnel with the elves in tow; there is a loud noise from the distance. The group steps out, back into the warehouse.
(if: $barricade is 1)[The barricaded door still holds, giving Hawke and the group a tactical advantage as a wave of bandits finally breaks down the door.] (if: $barricade is 0)[ The door of the warehouse is hanging open, and the bandits have had time to prepare an ambush on Hawke.]
After Hawke fends them off, the scene cuts and it’s implied that Hawke takes the elves back to the Guard where they'll be safe.
[[Confront Athenril about the job]]The next day, Hawke arrives at Athenril’s hovel. She’s is awaiting them, with arms crossed and more bodyguards than usual surrounding her. She shows Hawke the papers for entering Kirkwall.
Athenril, her anger grows as she talks: "It’s been a long time since someone failed me so spectacularly. One of my agents dead. Your cargo now under guard at the Viscount’s Keep. Dangerous people are breathing down my back, not to mention the large amount of gold I won’t be getting now. Give me one good reason I should hand these over."
[[1. My friend is dead]]
[[2. Because I'm so cute]]
[[3. Things will get ugly if you don't]]Hawke, quietly and with pain: "You'll give them to me because my friend died for your stupid job. Because you swore you'd never deal in people."
Athenril looks regretful but makes no apology. Finally, she hands the papers over to Hawke.
Athenril: "I'm sorry. Now get out."
[[Depart Athenril's for good|End]]Hawke, with bravado: "Why, you should give them to me because I'm brave and daring and generous and handsome and I'm absolutely *irrisistible* when I pout."
Athenril, clearly desperate to get rid of Hawke, gives a frustrated groan and hands over the papers.
Athenril: "Just stop. I hope to never see you again."
[[Depart Athenril's for good|End]]Hawke, angry and out of patience: "Because I've run out of patience and I'll take them by force if is means I never have to deal with you again."
Athenril makes a disgusted, defeated shout and hands over the papers. She silently glares as Hawke departs.
[[Depart Athenril's for good|End]]Nora looks up hopefully.
Nora, speaking quickly, "She promised me enough to keep the shop running for months. With both you and (if: $Bethany is 1)[Bethany] (if: $Carver is 1)[Carver] getting paid, you'll be off to a rich start in Kirkwall."
Hawke ponders Athenril's offer.
[[1. Sounds acceptable]]
[[2. Ooo! Money!]]
[[3. Forget it]]Hawke looks guiltily at the slaves.
Hawke: "I think it would be fore the best. Our families need the money... And really, where would they go?"

Hawke: "I'm sorry. I can't just send them to that life."
[[Nora's anger starts to boil over]]
