Somehow... after all of what happened last night, I managed to fall asleep. Any other day and I might have tried to sleep in, but my nerves forbid me from staying idle for too long. It was just a bit after the break of dawn that my feet carried me to the central bailey to see a large pile of luggage and a girl with dark hair standing next to it.
CHIYOE: ......
She looked lost in thought, analyzing the luggage whilst unmoving. She eventually turned and noticed me, a slight amount of surprise written over her face that soon fell into her more neutral expression that I had seen all yesterday.
CHIYOE: Good morning, Saneyo.
SANEYO: G-Good morning! Erm... I think.
She cocked her head to the side a bit. Though no words escaped her lips, her eyes seemed to ask her questions all on their own.
SANEYO: Well... I mean... I think it's hard to really believe in such a positive greeting when... last night...
She gave a nod of understanding before beckoning me to join her side in front of the luggage. I followed.
CHIYOE: You must be unused to the sight.
SANEYO: Are you?
CHIYOE: ...I don't know.
SANEYO: ...?
CHIYOE: Have you found yours amongst these?
She breezily changed the subject and it took me a moment to realize what she meant—
SANEYO: Oh! Are these all ours?
CHIYOE: Mmhm.
SANEYO: Well, I can help you find yours while I look for mine!
CHIYOE: That won't be necessary. I've already found mine.
She pointed languidly to one small trunk smack dab in the middle of the entire assortment.
CHIYOE: If yours is at the top, it would help me be able to retrieve mine...
SANEYO: Oh... Chiyoe, have you been waiting this morning for someone to come by and grab the one on top for you?
She blushed a bit before nodding. I hadn't really gotten to know her the day before, but seeing her today really opened my eyes a little bit of how awkward she could be. It's nice.
I gave her a reassuring smile.
SANEYO: Well, let's try and move these together then! That'll make it easier for you, right?
CHIYOE: ...Thank you, Saneyo.
In return, I got a smile from her myself. We set to taking the heavy trunks off the top and onto the ground beside us so we could more easily get to hers but when we removed one, we happened upon a slip of parchment with a scrawled note:
"The one who kills becomes emperor."SANEYO: …!
Though the note had sent a chill down my spine, when I looked over to Chiyoe, she just seemed pensive.
???: H-Hey! Saneyo! Chiyoe!

SANEYO: …!
Though the note had sent a chill down my spine, when I looked over to Chiyoe, she just seemed pensive.
???: H-Hey! Saneyo! Chiyoe!
Mystery ManA voice shouted at us, and we turned to see Haruharu running towards us. He stopped a few paces away and was panting a little bit.
HARUHARU: There you two are-! Geez… I was runnin’ all over the place and you two are just in front here?
CHIYOE: Hm…?
SANEYO: Um, if you ran everywhere, do you need to catch your breath a bit…?
HARUHARU: Th-That doesn’t matter! Listen, all the rest of us are in the dining hall. If ya wanna eat, then hurry up an’ join us!
At his insistence, we followed Haruharu back to the dining hall. He seemed to be chipper, willing to chat with us the entire way back but no matter what, Chiyoe merely looked on ahead without another word. He didn’t seem to mind, willing to carry on a whole conversation by himself with me occasionally filling in some gaps so it wouldn’t be entirely awkward. He had slowed his steps to let us keep up with him, so I figured I should offer him the same courtesy.
Haruharu had only gotten halfway through his story about how Yukitsuna and he had almost nearly gotten into a fight that morning over some dream before we had arrived at our destination. We entered to be greeted by a large amount of food prepared into light dishes as well as plenty of people happily eating— the same people who had skipped the evening meal last night after that unsettling sight.
MealYUKITSUNA: Oh man, you actually found ‘em.
HARUHARU: Of course I did! Did you think I’d just give up?!
When the two of us arrived in the dining hall, it looked like everyone else was gathered except for us beforehand. Well… everyone except Akinari.
NENE: Where were you two anyway? We were, like, trying to just grab everyone in their rooms to gather for the midday meal, but yours were completely empty!
CHIYOE: ...In the central bailey. I found our luggage.
CHIYOE: ...and something else.
Chiyoe looked over to me, her eyes expectant.
...I guess she wants me to explain it, huh?
SANEYO: Yeah… Chiyoe and I found this note alongside our luggage.
SANEYO: All it said was: "The one who kills becomes emperor."
KIYONO: Emperor…?
Kiyono cocked her head to the side a bit.
NOBUYORI: ...How concise.
HARUHARU: J-Just like that?! No questions? Just kill and, wow, you’re emperor?!
NOBUYORI: Most likely not, but… that teru teru bozu does not seem to be the… best at explaining things rationally.
NAGATOKI: Ah, ah… Can’t you tell? This is a game, is it not? If you could just kill and become emperor that easily, that wouldn’t be any fun, would it?
MASAKO: I can’t say that I find the idea of murder in general to be… ‘fun’.
MARCELIS: The ‘ghost’ said something like… ‘you die here if they get away with it!’, yes?
TEISHI: I remember it saying that..! It was so… so scary…
MASAMORI: So it costs fifteen lives for just one of us to suddenly gain status and riches, hm?
MASAMORI: I wonder… does that not suggest the ones most desperate to kill are the poorest here?
OICHI: That is implying that only the poor are interested in power… If you truly think about it, the poor would be more interested in just having enough to care for themselves. It is those who already have that always want more and more.
GOZEN: That’s great and all but… What does it mean by ‘getting away with it’...?
In the midst of our discussion, an eerie laughter could be heard from above our heads.
TERUBOZU: Curious now, ar e w e…?
YUKITSUNA: AAAAAAAA— IT’S YOU-!!
Ignoring Yukitsuna’s loud reaction, Nobuyori merely looked up at the makeshift ghost with a stoic stare.
NOBUYORI: Are you going to answer clearly, at least?
HARUHARU: Says the guy who never writes a clear sentence…
TERUBOZU: Oooooof course!
Terubozu lowered itself to get closer to us all. It sort of sounded like it was mimicking a throat clearing before it began to speak.
TERUBOZU: When three people find a dead body, a speeeecial gong will ring—
Just then, the sound of a gong rang— one different from the one that Akinari had used to summon us all to meet with his father yesterday.
TERUBOZU: That’s how everyone’ll know to hustle and get to the corpse!
TERUBOZU: For a few hours after that, you’ll all get to INVESTIGATE!!
TERUBOZU: Use any methods you want— check the body, clear the rooms, interrogate your buddies, anyth i ng go e s ..!!
TERUBOZU: The gong will ring again at the end of it, and we’ll meet in the audience hall to whisk you all away to a suuuper secret place! There you’ll get to argue and argue and ARGUE! ...With evidence! Oooor not.
TERUBOZU: If you can’t reach a majority vote on who the culprit is by the time I tell you all to STOP, then the culprit gets off free as a b i r d !
TERUBOZU: Of course, if most of your vote for the correct culprit, well… that’ll be a S E C R E T ☆ ! But it won’t be very fun for them, heehee.
With that, Terubozu disappeared into thin air, the soft sound of raindrops accompanying its exit.
The entire room was hung in silence afterwards, everyone shifting and glancing about awkwardly. A few nervous coughs and Yukitsuna excused himself from the room. It did not take very long for everyone else to follow. The few that tried to continue eating out of politeness for whomever made the food eventually gave up too.
And so with heavy steps, I left, hopeful that I could occupy myself with thoughts other than doubting the good natures of my peers and fearing what any one of them might do next.
Free Time 1I have a little bit of spare time on my hand, so I think I might try to hang out with some of the others. Maybe it'll be easier to bond with the group as a whole if I take some time to get to know everyone a little better.
Where should I go check out?
Central Bailey 1
Art Hall 1
Kitchen 1
Bathhouse 1
Living Quarters 1
As I enter the central bailey, I see Akinari standing there. He approaches me as soon as he spots me.
AKINARI: Ah, Miss Saneyo? Did you want to talk about something?
Akinari FTE
Free Time 1 AKINARI: Alright. I'm all ears.
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Akinari.
AKINARI: So, what is that you wanted to talk about?
SANEYO: It's just... I don't understand why you have to separate yourself from the others like you have.
AKINARI: ...
SANEYO: But more than that... Why don't you turn me away, like you have everyone else?
AKINARI: ...
SANEYO: ...
The more I try to get out of him, the more it seems like he's ignoring me. I guess this isn't something he really wants to talk about right now.
SANEYO: I'm sorry if I'm bothering you... I just wanted you to know that it's not your fault, alright?
AKINARI: Miss Saneyo...
SANEYO: And... Even if I don't understand why... I appreciate that you at least trust me enough to let me come talk to you like this.
AKINARI: I'm sorry... Right now everything is just... A lot to handle.
SANEYO: Akinari...
AKINARI: I'll get over myself soon... I just need some time to think it over, alright?
SANEYO: It's alright...
SANEYO: Hey... If you ever just want to talk... I'll always be willing to listen to you, alright?
AKINARI: Of course, Miss Saneyo.
Even as I turn to leave, I take a quick glance over my shoulder as I exit the hall. I just hope he'll be okay... He's really letting what happened to his father get to him.
Akinari VisitsEntering the art hall, I spot Kiyono.
KIYONO: Ah... Hello. Was there something you wanted from me?
Kiyono FTE
Free Time 1 KIYONO: Ah... Alright.
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Kiyono.
SANEYO: So...
KIYONO: Hm?
SANEYO: S-sorry. I was just wondering... When did you first discover your powers?
KIYONO: Isn't that kind of a strange question...?
SANEYO: Eh?! Is it?!
KIYONO: Welll... Asking something like that is kind of like if I were to ask you when you first discovered that you could see, or smell, or hear.
KIYONO: The answer is that... I've had these abilities since as long as I can remember...
SANEYO: Oh! I had no idea... I just thought... Maybe you gained them after a lot of training. Or an enlightening journey.
KIYONO: Ah, I see... It is a common misconception. Although, people with my ability are only born with it.
SANEYO: I'm glad that I'm not the only one to make that mistake, then.
Part of me feels like I'll never be able to relate with Kiyono. Although, I do find her and her talent to be really intriguing. I just hope I'm not bothering her.
SANEYO: Hey... I was also just wondering, isn't being able to see spirits a little... scary?
KIYONO: Hm? Why do you think that?
SANEYO: I don't know, aren't they just a little... Spooky?
KIYONO: Ah... I suppose I felt that way when I was younger. But now... I'm not really bothered by them anymore. I've accepted the fact that some can't cope with the fact of their death, and choose to take that out on the few who aren't deaf to words.
SANEYO: Wow... I didn't even think about anything like that. Just the idea of a dead person speaking to me gives me the chills... Let alone an angry dead person.
KIYONO: It's alright, though... No matter how angry they get, they can never hurt you.
SANEYO: Really... Can't they fling stuff around the room?
KIYONO: I think someone has been listening to a few too many scary stories... Hehe...
That was the first time I had ever heard her laugh. I'm glad that I could spend some time talking to her like that. She normally seems so serious, but I guess she's just a kid like me, after all. Except she also has spiritual powers.
Checking up on AkinariAs the sun starts to go down, I notice most of the others heading back to their rooms. I start heading in that general direction but...
I'm a little worried about Akinari. He wasn't there in the dining hall with us this morning. I guess the death of his father hit him really hard. I can only hope that he at least ate at some point. But still, I know it's best if I don't bother him.
But as I go to enter my room, I hear someone approach me from behind.
AKINARI: Hey Saneyo... I'm sorry about earlier.
SANEYO: I'm just worried about you...
AKINARI: Don't waste your time worrying about me. Focus on yourself.
SANEYO: I know you don't want me to worry about you but... Please. You can't do this to yourself.
AKINARI: I know that you're worried for me, but... I just can't go back to pretending like nothing happened.
SANEYO: Akinari... Please... You don't need to erase your father's death from your memory. But please... Stop isolating yourself from everyone.
AKINARI: ...
SANEYO: What if... What if we tried to set up a party. Like the feast we were going to have originally before...
AKINARI: Saneyo... Please stop...
SANEYO: I'm... I'm sorry...
I quickly realize that I'm starting to cross some boundaries. Maybe it's just best if I leave...
OichiAs the sun starts to go down, I notice most of the others heading back to their rooms. I start heading in that general direction but...
I'm a little worried about Akinari. He wasn't there in the dining hall with us this morning. I guess the death of his father hit him really hard. I can only hope that he at least ate at some point.
Without thinking about it, instead of heading to my own room I go straight to Akinari's. I tap on his door a few times to gather his attention.
AKINARI: What is it?
He doesn't sound too pleased.
SANEYO: I'm sorry if I'm bothering you, I just wanted to talk.
AKINARI: Fine then.
SANEYO: Um... Do you mind if I come in?
AKINARI: Go ahead.
Speaking to him through his door was a little nervewracking, but with proper permission I slide the door open and walk in.
AKINARI: What did you want?
SANEYO: I'm just worried about you...
AKINARI: Don't waste your time worrying about me. Focus on yourself.
SANEYO: I know you don't want me to worry about you but... Please. You can't do this to yourself.
AKINARI: And what exactly am I doing to myself?
SANEYO: You're shutting yourself off from everyone!
AKINARI: Yeah, well, I can't trust any of them.
SANEYO: Akinari... Please... Just give it a shot.
AKINARI: ...
SANEYO: What if... What if we tried to set up a party. Like the feast we were going to have originally before...
AKINARI: Saneyo... Please stop...
SANEYO: I'm... I'm sorry...
I quickly realize that I'm starting to cross some boundaries. Maybe it's just best if I leave...
OichiAs I walk into the kitchen, I notice Haruharu in the room with me.
HARUHARU: Huh? You wanna really hang with me?
Haruharu FTE
Free Time 1 HARUHARU: Let's hang then!
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Haruharu.
SANEYO: ...You look a little dejected.
HARUHARU: Huh? Man, am I that obvious?
He heaves out a sigh.
HARUHARU: Guess you caught me. Sorry, I don't mean to be, but...
HARUHARU: Whenever I look at you, I just think about Akinari.
Oh? Does he mean with everything that happened lately to him...?
HARUHARU: Don't tell him, but... I hate his guts.
SANEYO: ?!
HARUHARU: He grew up in a samurai family. Lotta folks would kill to be in his position, y'know?
HARUHARU: Samurai are cool and actually change lives and get noticed for it. Who doesn't want to be one? Then it's THEIR families that get the most of the rice as tax.
SANEYO: Are you... upset because your village was poor?
HARUHARU: .......
HARUHARU: ...I had to find a way to make enough food to actually survive after all of it got nabbed by those dirty tax collectors. And then there's other folks sufferin' and starvin'— in the same shoes because of some noble prick.
HARUHARU: Everything could be different if I was just him, and he were me.
SANEYO: .........
HARUHARU: Augh-! I don't mean to say I don't want to hang out with YOU if you think that... Yer kinda like me.
HARUHARU: ...Besides, I got a good feelin' 'bout you.
SANEYO: Oh?
HARUHARU: Sorry I can't describe it really well right now, but I got this odd fuzzy feelin' that I could trust you? Don't stab me in the back, y'hear me?
He said it with a strange smile, but I believed him when he said he trusted me.
HARUHARU: Oh! Darn, I took a lotta yer time, huh? Sorry. I'll get outta yer hair. You can have the rest of my snack if you want. Consider it repayment for listenin’ to me vent.
He tosses his onigiri towards me before scrambling away. He looks back at me over his shoulder as he dashed away, giving me a thumbs up.
Checking up on AkinariEntering the batthouse, I notice that Chiyoe is also here with me.
CHIYOE: Ah... you wish to join me?
Chiyoe FTE
Free Time 1 CHIYOE: Very well.
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Chiyoe.
CHIYOE: .........
Though we're in our most exposed states in the bath, I can't help but feel like I'm the only one flustered here. Chiyoe is wearing the same neutral expression as always...
CHIYOE: Is there something on my face?
SANEYO: ...!
SANEYO: N-No...! I'm sorry if I was rude!
CHIYOE: ...It's fine. I'm used to being stared at.
SANEYO: Ah... that makes sense.
CHIYOE: ...You look like you have a question.
SANEYO: ...Urm, well, it's kind of rude to ask.
She stares back at me, her gaze inviting the words out of my mouth though her own lips never parted to give me that explicit consent. It was... strange, but I got the feeling that it was okay to ask.
SANEYO: Um... are you used to doing... well... um...
How do I word this?!
SANEYO: ...to being naked with someone like this?
There! I said it! I can't believe I did!
Heat rose on my cheeks out of my sense of shame. As red-faced as I was, Chiyoe seemed completely unaffected.
CHIYOE: No.
CHIYOE: You heard rumors then... I am not one of them. I dance in the plainest meaning of the word.
CHIYOE: I visit high-class social gatherings. Young girls do sell what you wonder, but not all. Everyone has their own struggles.
SANEYO: I'm... sorry to be rude. Would you like to talk about something else?
CHIYOE: ...It's fine. You are an outsider, aren't you? You know little. It's in your nature to ask and feed on information that you won't get in your regular life.
CHIYOE: Be careful, Saneyo.
Unsure what to say, I wordlessly nodded.
CHIYOE: I'll be leaving the baths now. Are you?
SANEYO: ...Yeah. I don't want to faint in here.
SANEYO: Would you like to have something cold to drink or eat after this?
A pause came where she gave a captivating smile.
CHIYOE: ...I'd love to accompany you.
After another exchange, we parted.
Checking up on Akinari I notice Teishi as I'm making my way over to the living quarters. I just stare at her for a few moments, unsure of what to say.
TEISHI: Heehee, is there something you'd like to do? You've been staring at me, you know...
Teishi FTE
Free Time 1 TEISHI: Let us spend time together then, mmhm~!
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Teishi.
TEISHI: Urm...
SANEYO: Yes, Teishi?
TEISHI: Well...
She started fiddling with her hair.
TEISHI: Have you noticed something... different about me?
SANEYO: ...Ah, you're wearing a new hairpin!
TEISHI: ...Y-yes.
SANEYO: Do you make accessories along with kimonos, Teishi?
TEISHI: Um... sometimes, but I'm not very good at it.
SANEYO: But it looks so expensive! You are better than you think you are.
TEISHI: Mmhm...
She's avoiding looking at me. She seems restless, but she's not moving. Is there something else she wants me to say...?
TEISHI: I wonder...
SANEYO: Hn?
TEISHI: ...W-Well, is that all ya hafta say-?!
Ah... she's starting to raise her voice and rake her hands through her hair more. I should say something..!
SANEYO: You look nice in it! The hairpin, I mean..!
TEISHI: .........
She looks a little calmer now. Thank goodness...
TEISHI: ...Heehee.
SANEYO: ...Do you like to be called cute, Teishi?
TEISHI: U-Um..!
Her face is bright red. I suppose she does.
TEISHI: If you'd like to call me that again... I wouldn't be opposed to it...
SANEYO: Hehehe... Of course.
TEISHI: If you want me to make you look cuter too, um... I could see what I could do.
SANEYO: But I wouldn't be as cute as you?
TEISHI: ...!
TEISHI: Hehehe...
She left with a spring in her step. I suppose I made her very happy. Maybe she's simpler to understand than I thought...
Checking up on Akinari The next day during our midday meal, we all gathered in the dining hall again. To my surprise, even Akinari had joined us today. It seemed we all were able to be more at ease and in better spirits after taking some time yesterday to ourselves.
Partway through it, however, Chiyoe spoke up, her expression as neutral as ever even when surrounded by a lot of lively and smiling faces.
CHIYOE: Marcelis… you should speak when you want to.
Everyone paused their own idle chats amongst one another to stare at the foreigner. He gulped, hesitating, before he eventually nodded under all the pressure and eyes of the rest of us.
MARCELIS: Excuse me, but um… would anyone say ‘no’ to the idea of having the feast?
TEISHI: Oh! Do you mean the one we were supposed to have on the first day?
Marcelis nodded again, attempting to work a polite smile onto his countenance.
MARCELIS: It sounds like a good event to meet you all better. Parties usually work very well.
AKINARI: Actually, about that… Miss Saneyo had discussed something like this last night.
SANEYO: Y-yeah. We did.
AKINARI: I think it would be a good way to show that sick ghost that it can’t divide us so easily. I won’t let him ruin our feast a second time.
MASAMORI: Quite the optimist, aren’t you two?
NENE: C’mon, Lord Masamori! Don’t be such a stick in the mud!
MASAMORI: What? You honestly mean to say that you want me to think that eating and making a fool of ourselves is a display of strength?
YUKITSUNA: Well… heck, it’ll at least make things less pathetic and sad around here, right? I’m all for it!
TEISHI: If Akinari suggests we should, shouldn’t we just listen to him?
SHIGETAKA: Sorry, but a party like that sounds soooo boring.
MASAKO: Really? I think that it could be interesting.
SHIGETAKA: Um… Actually, maybe it could be cool? Hehe…
Shigetaka seemed to genuinely be interested now, grinning goofily from ear to ear.
I… really don’t understand him at all.
AKINARI: I understand if some of you are against the idea. I also understand that without my father here, none of you have to feel the need to treat me like an authority figure either. But I really think that either way we need to find a way to try and get along. We can’t give into that murderous spirit’s demands.
SANEYO: I… I agree! I really think that we should try hosting the feast again.
MARCELIS: Ah… I am glad that this works out…
HARUHARU: Let’s give it our best effort then, yeah? All of us gotta pitch in now!
TERUBOZU: Oooo, what about ME?!
At the return of Terubozu, I could hear the starting to grow familiar sound of Yukitsuna screaming.
TERUBOZU: Oops, was I interrupting something?
TEISHI: Yes! Yes you were!
TERUBOZU: S O R R Y !
TERUBOZU: I just figured you all would like to have a little check-up on the outside world!
KIYONO: Outside... World...?
TERUBOZU: Buuut everything comes with a P R I C E !
NOBUYORI: ...Of course?
TERUBOZU: If none of you are dead in the next three days, then you can say goodbye to ALL your family!
HARUHARU: It can’t do that, right?! Right?!
TEISHI: Um…
Teishi faked a quiet cough and gestured her head slightly towards Akinari. It seemed that was all that was needed for Haruharu to slump his shoulders and draw himself inwards, reconsidering his rebuttal.
HARUHARU: R-Right…
The room was filled with an uncomfortable gloom. Nobody cared to raise their voices anymore, seeing no way to be able to protest the threat that was placed before us.
TERUBOZU: Thaaaat’ll be all! But hey, enjoy your little feast! Save some for me, O K?
And just like yesterday, Terubozu disappeared into the air, vanishing with the accompaniment of the soft sound of rainfall for us to dwell with.
Much like yesterday, we eventually dispersed, many of us not taking another bite of our meals. Finding little else to do by myself, I walked out of the room and began to explore, hoping to dismiss the motive that Terubozu tried to instill within us.
Free Time 2In the middle of the night I hear a knock at my door. My first thought is that it's just my imagination until I hear them from the other side of my door.
???: Saneyo?
Without thinking of the potential danger that could come with answering the door in the middle of the night, I jump out of bed and throw the door open. There I see, standing in my doorway, Oichi.
OICHI: Sorry to disturb you.
SANEYO: Oichi...? What are you doing here so late at night?
OICHI: I want you to do me a favor.
SANEYO: A favor...? Why me?
OICHI: It involves Akinari. You're much closer to him than I am, from what I've seen.
SANEYO: I mean... We've spoken a few times but-
OICHI: Next time you're able to talk to him, I need you two to go and find Kiyono.
SANEYO: Kiyono... Oh...
OICHI: She should be able to connect him to the spirit of his father.
SANEYO: Right, but... Why did you come to tell me this?
OICHI: His father might have some clues as to who could be behind this whole thing.
SANEYO: Oh, that makes sense.
OICHI: Oh, but before I leave, just between you and I...
OICHI: ...
OICHI: I think someone among us may be controlling that ghost.
Before I could even react, before I could even respond, she backed out of my room and closed my door.
I lay back in my bed, trying my hardest to go back to sleep and just forget that last part... But I know it'll stick in my brain for all eternity.
Next Day I have a little bit of spare time on my hand, so I think I might try to hang out with some of the others. Maybe it'll be easier to bond with the group as a whole if I take some time to get to know everyone a little better.
Where should I go check out?
Kitchen 2
Living Quarters 2
Art Hall 2
Administrative Space 2
Dining Hall 2As I walk into the kitchen, I notice Nene.
NENE: Oooh, Saneyo! You wanna hang out with me?!
Nene FTE
Free Time 2 NENE: Let's make this a ball of a time then, Saneyo! Sorry you have to just watch me cook though.
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Nene.
NENE: There! Now we just have to wait for it to cook. Hmm... maybe I could make some dessert?
NENE: Do you like anmitsu? I remember you have a sweet tooth!
SANEYO: Eh?! You remember that?!
NENE: Of course! I don't forget a customer and their tastes! Ever!
SANEYO: But... I don't visit very often...
NENE: You think that'd stop me? You must be kiddin', haha!
I wonder... does Nene know more about me than I do her? It sure seems so.
Maybe I could learn more about her now if I ask something...
SANEYO: Nene, can I ask you a question?
NENE: Hm? Of course, darlin'! Shoot!
SANEYO: Um... you have an older brother, right?
Her face fell in that instant. Oh no...
NENE: ...Yeah. His name is Takao. He's a good big brother.
Ah. I guess he's still around. Maybe he's doing something in the back of the restaurant now that Nene works in the front?
SANEYO: Oh? What was he like when you last talked with him? I'm sure he must've been really nice when you parted!
NENE: Hmm... What did he say?
NENE: Something like...
NENE: ❛When everything's done, let's go into town and find the most expensive stuff we can and eat good! Let Mama and Papa take it easy, aight?❜
NENE: ❛...Hey, don't cry. It's not like this is goodbye forever. Jeez, you're such a crybaby!❜
SANEYO: Oh, I didn't realize you were so emotional.
NENE: Is it not normal to be that way when you think you're gonna be away from your folks for a while?!
NENE: Haha... you must be thinkin' of how funny my face looked if I was crying!
SANEYO: Hm... You DO wear a lot of makeup... It would run, huh?
NENE: Yeah! It's the worst!
NENE: Hmm... but it's fun to apply it again, so maybe it's not the worst?
SANEYO: Doesn't it take a long time though?
NENE: Buuuut it's totes worth it! Hey, lemme do your makeup sometime. But first, anmitsu time!
SANEYO: Sure thing.
We continued to make food. I smiled a lot; good company really does make good food.
Seeking AkinariIn the living quarters I spot Yukitsuna.
YUKITSUNA: Oh, it's Lady Luck's favorite! You wanna spend some time together maybe?
Yukitsuna FTE
Free Time 2 YUKITSUNA: Haha, nice! Let's train together a little, yeah?
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Yukitsuna.
SANEYO: Haaaah... I'm exhausted...
YUKITSUNA: Heheh, you lasted longer than I thought you would at least! You hurt or something?
SANEYO: No, I'm not, but... I never swung a practice sword before! Much less so many times...!
YUKITSUNA: Well, if you keep at it, you'll get used to it. And then you'll be stronger.
SANEYO: Do you want to be stronger, Yukitsuna? You look plenty strong already to me...
YUKITSUNA: ...Hm. Yeah. I guess you could say I'm compensating for something.
SANEYO: ...?
I want to ask, but maybe I shouldn't pry...
I'll ask him about something else.
SANEYO: Yukitsuna? Why did you want to train with me? Shouldn't you try and practice with someone stronger like you?
SANEYO: You didn't even really get to do anything... You were just instructing me the whole time...
YUKITSUNA: .........
YUKITSUNA: Well... you can say you reminded me of someone.
His smile grew very melancholic.
YUKITSUNA: I have a little sister— you kinda seem a lot like her, at least from what I know of you.
SANEYO: ...Do you miss her?
YUKITSUNA: Well, of course! Don't you miss your younger brother?
SANEYO: ...Yeah. I hope he's doing okay.
YUKITSUNA: Well, kids can be tougher than you think. I'm sure he'll be fine no matter what that teru teru bozu says. No, he'll DEFINITELY be fine...!
SANEYO: ...Thank you. Hearing you say that makes me really believe that. I hope you're right.
YUKITSUNA: Mmhm. Besides... sorry for kinda projecting my li'l sis onto you. I promise I won't do it again.
SANEYO: If you want to spend time with me to feel like your little sister is here... I'm okay with that.
SANEYO: I'll train with you as much as you want! No one should have to feel lonely.
YUKITSUNA: .........
His eyes go wide but then he lets out a harmonious laugh.
YUKITSUNA: Thanks. You're one of a kind, you know that?
YUKITSUNA: ...That's a compliment by the way.
He patted me on the head. His touch... it felt warm and comforting.
Seeking AkinariAfter spending some time with some of the others, I decide to seek out Akinari. Memories of Oichi from last night flood into my mind.
I head over to his room and knock on his door. A few moments later, the door slides open to reveal him standing before me.
AKINARI: Was there something you wanted to talk to me about?
SANEYO: Um... I wanted to apologize about last night.
AKINARI: You don't have to apologize. It's my fault for snapping at you.
SANEYO: It's fine... But um... I also came here because I needed to take you to meet someone.
AKINARI: Hm?
SANEYO: I'll explain more when we get there.
I grabbed him by the hand and pulled him along with me
Finding KiyonoWhen I enter the art hall, I notice that Shigetaka is already in there, tapping his foot impatiently.
SHIGETAKA: Y'want something from me?
Shigetaka FTE
Free Time 2 SHIGETAKA: Alright, whatever...
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Shigetaka.
SANEYO: I know you're an architect and all, but I guess you never struck me as the type to like admiring art.
SHIGETAKA: Hah! You think I'm actually here for the art?
SANEYO: Um...
SHIGETAKA: No, stupid. I'm here because I was hoping someone like Masako or Chiyoe would show up.
SANEYO: Oh, so you arranged a meetup here or something? Sorry if I'm getting the way, then.
SHIGETAKA: Ehe... Not really...
SANEYO: ...?
SHIGETAKA: I was kind of just hoping one of them would show up.
SANEYO: Isn't that a little... creepy?
SHIGETAKA: Hey, what's so creepy about hanging around, admiring some cool art.
SANEYO: But you just said-
SHIGETAKA: You really are dense, aren't you? It's called a cover up.
SANEYO: That's even creepier...
SHIGETAKA: Yeah, yeah whatever.
SANEYO: Why don't you just go up to one of them and ask if they want to hang out?
SHIGETAKA: Ugh, I don't want to come off as some creep.
SANEYO: Because what you're doing right now doesn't already accomplish that.
SHIGETAKA: ...
SHIGETAKA: Whatever.
With that, he exits the room in a hurry. He seems a little strange, but I think deep down he's capable of being an alright guy... Maybe.
Seeking Akinari Waiting in the administrative space, I notice Nobuyori.
NOBUYORI: Ah... would you like to take some time and be with me?
Nobuyori FTE
Free Time 2 NOBUYORI: That is perfectly fine with me. I'm sorry I'm a little boring however.
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Nobuyori.
SANEYO: You've been spinning that thing for a while now.
NOBUYORI: Hn? This?
He stopped pushing his hand and abruptly stopped the sphere with the maps on it.
NOBUYORI: It's fascinating though, isn't it?
NOBUYORI: All the maps we've seen before this... they were flat. And look at all these charted lands unbeknownst to us in Japan.
NOBUYORI: We're so many clans at war... yet we look merged together on this, don't we?
NOBUYORI: It makes our warring seem irrelevant when there's so much expansive and mysterious lands.
NOBUYORI: I cannot even read the names of these lands.
NOBUYORI: How little do we truly know? How little do I truly know?
NOBUYORI: They call me a poet... a master of language... yet I am stumped merely by basic terms as these. It makes you wonder—
SANEYO: You had a lot of fun spinning that, didn't you?
NOBUYORI: ...!
He looks up at me and blushes, his cheeks and ears a bright pink. He has a kind of goofy, shy smile on his face grow.
NOBUYORI: Y-Yes...
SANEYO: Ah...! I don't mean to ignore anything else you've said! It all sounded big and all but...
SANEYO: You were rambling faster and faster like you were trying to hide something. And you looked like you were really alive when you were playing with that, so...
NOBUYORI: ...I suppose I can't hide my most elementary self with just words.
SANEYO: Well... why hide that? I think we all get amused by something, so...
NOBUYORI: Yes, yes we do.
NOBUYORI: I think there's a mature part of my fascination too though... or maybe you'll ridicule me and say that it's childish too.
SANEYO: I never would-!!
NOBUYORI: Haha... It's a joke.
...He's not very good at making his jokes clear then. Maybe he doesn't talk with people very often?
NOBUYORI: Saneyo, where did you grow up? Was it always the capital?
SANEYO: Yes.
NOBUYORI: I come from farther away than you then for certain. I come from Echigo.
SANEYO: Oh! That's really north, isn't it?
NOBUYORI: Not the farthest north... but it is northward of Kyoto, yes.
NOBUYORI: I had no qualms about making the travel to here however... because I enjoy travel. I believe that is why I accepted my talent to begin with years ago...
NOBUYORI: This sphere reminded me of my thirst to travel... my wanderlust...
NOBUYORI: I think after this mess is over and we're freed, I'll hope the wars end and I'll be able to visit places more freely... Maybe even places beyond Japan.
SANEYO: ...I think that sounds very nice. Like a vacation.
NOBUYORI: Maybe you'd like to come along with me?
SANEYO: Ah..! I'd have to ask my parents and—
NOBUYORI: No need to fret and figure out those details so soon.
He laughed. It was a very heavenly laugh that stole the words from my mouth and pacified me.
NOBUYORI: I believe we still have quite a while before anyone unifies all of Japan's lands besides.
I nodded and watched him spin and play with the map sphere for a little while longer, my thoughts lingering on his words.
Seeking Akinari As I enter the dining hall again, I see that Gozen is still seated at the table, even after everyone left.
GOZEN: Hey, Somethin' up?
Gozen FTE
Free Time 2 GOZEN: Well, I'm free to talk, if ya need.
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Gozen.
As we talk, Gozen continues to chomp on her food. It seems like while everyone left after Terubozu, Gozen still remains in the dining hall.
SANEYO: I'm surprised you still have an appetite after all that.
GOZEN: Eh, what do I care.
SANEYO: Are you really not afraid about what might happen to our families?
GOZEN: Sis, I don't exactly have a family to go back to.
SANEYO: Oh... I'm so sorry.
GOZEN: Nah, don't feel sorry for me. They've been gone for a while now. I've long since gotten over it.
SANEYO: It's still sad...
GOZEN: Eh, but if it didn't happen, I don't think I would have picked up archery. Losing my pops like that made me realize that I needed to learn to defend myself.
SANEYO: What happened to him... If you don't mind me asking, that is.
GOZEN: Our village was raided a few years ago. My pops was one of the only ones that had any fighting experience, so he tried his best to help fend them off but... Even he wasn't enough...
SANEYO: That must have been really scary...
GOZEN: Yeah. At the time, they seemed unstoppable. But in reality, they were just a band of weak, petty thieves. I could take them out in a few minutes nowadays.
SANEYO: I see...
GOZEN: Like I said, don't feel bad for me. It's all in the past. I've come to terms with it, and it's helped shape me into who I am today.
SANEYO: I wish I could be like you Gozen. I just feel bad for everything that's happened so far, like Akinari's father and...
GOZEN: Don't be, none of it is your fault. You're just an innocent bystander like the rest of us.
SANEYO: I guess... But-
GOZEN: Instead of moping about what already went wrong, you're better off trying your best to prevent anything like it from happening again.
SANEYO: You're right! Thank you so much, Gozen. I'll... I'll try my best to keep that in mind going forward.
Gozen seems like a really dependable person. I'm glad to have her around.
Seeking AkinariEventually Akinari and I find Kiyono wandering around the central bailey aimlessly.
KIYONO: Saneyo...? Akinari...?
SANEYO: Ah! There you are!
AKINARI: Wait... Why were you taking me to meet Kiyono?
SANEYO: Because... I wanted to see if she could help you speak with your father...
AKINARI: Tch.
He didn't seem too pleased by that idea.
SANEYO: Is... Is something wrong?
AKINARI: Do you think I haven't thought of that myself?
SANEYO: I... I'm sorry...
AKINARI: I don't even want to imagine what he's going through or...
SANEYO: But... What if he can give us a clue as to who is behind all of this.
AKINARI: ...
SANEYO: Kiyono... Do you think you could help us speak with Akinari's father.
KIYONO: Of course.
AKINARI: ...
AKINARI: Alright, fine.
Kiyono closes her eyes tightly for a good few moments, and while her eyes are normally a pale blue, as soon as she opens them, they instead appear to be a deep red color.
KIYONO?: Where... Where am I...?
AKINARI: Father...?
KIYONO?: Is that... Is that you, Akinari?
AKINARI: Father...
It's a little hard to believe but... Could she actually be channeling the spirit of Akinari's father?
KIYONO?: I'm sorry that all of this had to happen Akinari, but... You need to leave immediately. Gather everyone and leave.
AKINARI: I wish I could, but they've blocked off all the exits. We're trapped here.
KIYONO?: It's as I have feared then.
AKINARI: Father... The person behind this is trying to persuade us into killing each other.
KIYONO? The person behind this...
AKINARI: Father... Do you remember who did this to you?
KIYONO? I'm... I'm afraid I... I do not...
AKINARI: Father...?
Kiyono's eyes fluttered shut and her eyes returned to their normal pale blue color.
KIYONO: I'm sorry... Keeping a connection in this place is so difficult.
AKINARI: It's fine. I guess he didn't have much to share with us, anyway.
SANEYO: Akinari... I'm really sorry for making you do this.
AKINARI: It's no problem. I know you were only trying to help.
Still... I couldn't help but feel bad.
After that, the three of us separated and returned to our rooms for the night.
Day 3The next morning, we all discussed over our morning meal what we'd all be doing to prepare for the feast later that night. It was decided that we'd all be splitting up into different roles.
Haruharu, Nagatoki, Nobuyori, and Marcelis were all chosen as the chefs for the night.
Nene and Teishi were selected to serve the food.
Chiyoe and Masako would be performing for entertainment.
Kiyono offered to help ward off any negative omens or spirits from the dining hall for us.
Akinari, Oichi, and Gozen volunteered to be on guard duty in case Terubozu came to mess with us.
Masamori declined to be involved with the feast at all.
And then finally, Shigetaka, Yukitsuna, and I were selected as the cleanup crew for after the feast.
Why do I get the feeling that Shigetaka probably won't help us at all...?
Free Time 3I have a little bit of spare time on my hand before the feast, so I think I might try to hang out with some of the others. Maybe it'll be easier to bond with the group as a whole if I take some time to get to know everyone a little better.
Where should I go check out?
Apothecary 3
Art Hall 3
Central Bailey 3
Administrative Space 3
Audience Hall 3Just as I figured, Masamori is hanging out in the apothecary.
MASAMORI: Are you insisting on tailing me today, city wench?
Masamori FTE
Free Time 3 MASAMORI: Then don't get in my way.
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Masamori.
MASAMORI: Don't you have other people to hang out with? Things to do?
SANEYO: Is there something wrong with me trying to spend time with you?
MASAMORI: It shows you're not very smart.
SANEYO: I don't have to choose who I spend my time with based on anything more than a want!
Not that I knew entirely why I wanted to… but there was something natural about it I couldn’t deny.
MASAMORI: Desire alone is what gets people killed, you know.
He sticks something into my mouth.
SANEYO: ?!?!
I didn't get a good look at it since it was so sudden, but it was something round. I swallowed it and began to cough violently afterwards— just for a bit before calming down.
MASAMORI: Oh dear. I suppose the taste surprised you?
SANEYO: Wh-What did you feed me?!
MASAMORI: Kikatsu-gan. It's very helpful, just so you know, so you shouldn't be making that ungrateful, disgusted expression.
SANEYO: Wh— Am I going to die?!
MASAMORI: The opposite, actually. You should be thanking me. Now you won't need to eat for the rest of the day. No hunger at all. Astonishing, isn’t it?
SANEYO: B-But! The party—!
MASAMORI: ...You honestly think that feast will be not dubious?
SANEYO: Why should you think it is?!
MASAMORI: Because you shouldn't trust anyone. Think, I could've killed you so easily just now when I fed you that. If it had just been something poisonous—
SANEYO: ...But it wasn't.
MASAMORI: Wh...
MASAMORI: ...Don't tell me you think I'm trustworthy from that. Especially when I was trying to prove a point of how you shouldn't trust—
SANEYO: But.. you did that because you might have worried that I was too trusting and might get myself in trouble, right? And you fed me that because you're worried I'd get poisoned at the party, so... you're trying to save my life, aren't you?
MASAMORI: ...!!
Though his eyebrows furrowed and his face grew red, somehow I didn't get the idea that it was because he was angry or anything. Maybe... he was embarrassed?
MASAMORI: ...Don't try and twist my personality into something it isn't, you dullard.
MASAMORI: I... I'm just trying to prove that I'm right...!!
SANEYO: ....Pfft.
MASAMORI: D-Don't you laugh at me! I'll rip your tongue out-!!
Even though he said that, I couldn't help but giggle. He just grew exasperated, but he never laid another finger on me after he had fed me that small ration ball.
I watched him continue to work in the apothecary, using the materials at his disposal to make whatever it was— medicine, maybe?
Regardless... my heart felt as full as my stomach in that moment.
TroubleThere's still a bit more time before the feast. Everyone else had duties that they're currently working on, but I don't really have to do anything until after everyone's done eating. So I just find myself aimlessly wandering around the castle, until...
NENE: Saneyo! Quickly! There’s trouble in the kitchen-!!
NENE: Marcelis can’t cook anymore!
SANEYO: Did something happen?!
NENE: Well… um, yes, but it’s probably better if you just see for yourself-!
NENE: I hope it’s not getting worse...
He is on fireIn the art hall, I spot Nagatoki admiring the art.
NAGATOKI: Ah, Saneyo... Is something on your mind?
Nagatoki FTE
Free Time 3 NAGATOKI: Very well then, allow me to be of your service.
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Nagatoki.
NAGATOKI: Tell me, then... What is it that is troubling you?
SANEYO: You don't think that... Someone is actually going to go through with this whole murder thing, right?
NAGATOKI: Hm, it's hard to say...
SANEYO: Yeah...
NAGATOKI: I can promise you this, my dear: I have no interest in murder.
SANEYO: I'm glad to hear, but I'm unsure of the others.
NAGATOKI: Ah, do you doubt them?
SANEYO: N-no! Well... I don't want to doubt them.
NAGATOKI: I see, I see...
NAGATOKI: Well, my dear, it's not healthy to doubt your friends entirely. But it isn't any healthier to fully put your trust in them. Just be cautious. Stay alert at all times.
SANEYO: That still just feels like it'd be me doubting them, though.
NAGATOKI: I suppose...
SANEYO: But... Do you think there is a way that we could guarantee that no one will murder?
NAGATOKI: Hm... Perhaps we could lock everyone in separate rooms so that they can't interact.
SANEYO: That sounds... disturbing.
NAGATOKI: Ah, well, I'm out of ideas then.
SANEYO: Um... Thanks for the suggestions, though. I'll try to figure something out...
NAGATOKI: I wish you luck, my dear.
Something about that guy just creeps me out. But, I still want to have trust in my friends. So I should keep my trust in him, too. He seems genuine, outside of some of his more twisted ideas.
TroubleWalking into the central bailey, I notice Marcelis.
MARCELIS: Ah...! Saneyo... Good morning..! May I spend some time with you today?
Marcelis FTE
Free Time 3 MARCELIS: Thank you. I hope I am interesting to you.
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Marcelis.
SANEYO: ............
MARCELIS: ............
SANEYO: ............
MARCELIS: .........snnz.
SANEYO: Sigh...
I didn't think he'd fall asleep on me out here. When he was falling forward, I had no choice but to catch him in my arms, but he's getting really heavy... His head also feels awkward draped over my shoulder...
I should probably wake him.
SANEYO: Marcelis... Marcelis… Come on… Wake up...
I whisper in his ear to try and gently rouse him. After a little bit, he opens his eyes though they remain half-lidded.
MARCELIS: Hnnh...?
When he realizes he was leaning his head on my shoulder and sleeping, his body jerks and he moves back a bit away from me and stands up straight.
MARCELIS: Aaaah..! I am so sorry, Saneyo...!
SANEYO: ...It's alright. You don't drool, if that's anything.
MARCELIS: Pl-Please do not tease me... I did not mean to...
SANEYO: It's okay. Do you feel tired still?
MARCELIS: ...Surprisingly, no. I feel very refreshed.
SANEYO: I'm glad. Though... I am envious of how you feel so comfortable sleeping out in the open like this.
MARCELIS: That is a bad trait.
MARCELIS: Someone will take advantage of me if I do this often.
MARCELIS: I become a boy in shelter to avoid this. I am growing too comfortable.
SANEYO: Do you not want to rely on anyone?
MARCELIS: ...I do not. I am weak because of that.
I probably shouldn't talk too much in this direction. I feel like I'll make him feel bad if I do.
SANEYO: Why were you tired? Were you doing something last night?
MARCELIS: ...Reading.
SANEYO: Oh? What kind of things do you read?
MARCELIS: I have some children's stories in Japanese. It is hard to sleep sometimes, so I study your language. It is soothing to be able to read familiar content.
SANEYO: So... they're not our own stories?
MARCELIS: I am afraid not. But... if you would like to tell me some, I would like to hear.
MARCELIS: I am an eager listener if you shall have me.
SANEYO: I shall. Tell me what you're interested in though, alright? I... don't want to bore you with tales you don't like just because you want to learn.
MARCELIS: Oh. That is... embarrassing...
I cock my head to the side.
MARCELIS: ...Princesses. I like to read stories with princesses.
MARCELIS: Th-There is a charm to their romances-!!
SANEYO: Pft... haha...
MARCELIS: I told you it is embarrassing...
SANEYO: It is not! I... think it's nice to meet a boy who does not talk of war and fighting.
MARCELIS: Oh? I can talk of that if you wish.
I think he missed the point, but oh well. We chat for a little bit more under the sun until it is time for us to part for the feast preparations.
TroubleAt the end of the audience hall I can see Masako, practicing on her koto.
MASAKO: ...
SANEYO: ...
MASAKO: ...
SANEYO: Um...
MASAKO: Oh, did you want to talk to me?
Masako FTE
Free Time 3 MASAKO: Ah... My apologies, then.
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Masako.
MASAKO: I must apologize for not being the most talkative person.
SANEYO: No! It's alright, I promise.
MASAKO: Say... Earlier, you asked if I could play a song for you on my koto. Are you still interested in that?
SANEYO: Oh, of course!
MASAKO: Alright, just give me a moment...
After taking a few minutes to prepare her instrument, Masako began playing a lovely song on her koto. It wasn't a song that I was familiar with, but it still sounded extremely pleasant.
MASAKO: Did you enjoy my performance?
SANEYO: Yes! It was great. I'd never heard the song before, but it still really captivated me.
MASAKO: Ah... That's probably because this is an original piece of mine.
SANEYO: Wait, you compose your own music, too?!
MASAKO: Why of course.
MASAKO: I'm not so great at communicating with others through words or writing. But... I've always found it much easier to convey how I feel through music.
SANEYO: I think I understand. Well, I hope we can talk like this more often.
Although I had a hard time understanding Masako the first time we met, I think I've grown a new appreciation for her now.
TroubleWhen I enter the administrative space, Oichi quickly approaches me.
OICHI: Can you spare a minute?
Oichi FTE
Free Time 3 OICHI: Thank you.
We hung out for a while... I think I've gotten a little closer with Oichi.
SANEYO: Um... I did what you asked of me earlier. Akinari and I talked with Kiyono. She let us speak to his father but... We didn't learn anything too important.
OICHI: That's fine. At least you tried your best.
OICHI: However, that's not what I'm here to talk to you about.
SANEYO: Huh? What did you want to talk about, then?
OICHI: I just wanted to warn you.
SANEYO: I-is something happening?
OICHI: No. Not yet, at least.
OICHI: It's very likely that a murder will be attempted tonight.
SANEYO: But... I thought the motive wasn't due to end for another day?
OICHI: That's true. But... a murder can take place at any moment.
SANEYO: I guess that's true.
OICHI: I will be on guard duty for the paty tonight. But... I was wondering if you could keep an eye out for me when you're in the dining hall with everyone else.
SANEYO: I... I will!
OICHI: Thank you.
SANEYO: Can I ask why you're so sure something will happen, though?
OICHI: A party is the perfect time to set someone up. There's so much going on, and if you let your guard down, it'll give someone with dark intentions an opening.
SANEYO: A-alright.
OICHI: But still. Try to have fun. I don't want to ruin your good time.
I'm still not sure what to think about Oichi. She clearly has thought all of these things out a lot more thoroughly than I have. Still, she has made me a little more nervous and doubtful around others.
TroubleI followed Nene to the kitchen, struggling to keep up with her speed. When we got there, I was greeted with the sounds of the four boys yelling and a bright red cascade of flames.
HARUHARU: Why won’t it just die down already?!
NENE: H-How is the fire not out yet-?! I left to get Saneyo— isn’t that enough time?!
NOBUYORI: ...I’ve never extinguished flames before.
HARUHARU: J-Just give us a hand already, okay?!
After a team effort and some time, the flames eventually did die down and we could all exhale with a sigh of relief.
MARCELIS: ...I must apologize for this.
SANEYO: What even happened to start this horrific fire?
MARCELIS: I was trying to cook and well…
NOBUYORI: Boom. Flames. Everywhere.
HARUHARU: I thought you said you could manage a basic meal...
MARCELIS: I am not this bad at cooking in normal situations, I swear!
NENE: Well, we can’t cry over that now! What’s done with is done with!
NENE: Saneyo, can you trade jobs with Marcelis? You know how to cook, right?
SANEYO: Yeah, sure. I can cook, but… I can’t say I’m the best at it.
NAGATOKI: As long as you’re able to cook without erupting the rooms into flames again, we should be alright.
SANEYO: I’ll try my best!
MARCELIS: Sorry again. I look forward to eating what you four make.
He looked legitimately upset over what he had done. I couldn’t help but feel sorry, even if he was the reason why this had all happened in the first place.
HARUHARU: You better! It’s gonna be GREAT!
NENE: Alright, I’ll leave you four to it then~! Let’s go, Marcelis!
As Marcelis began to leave, I noticed a burn mark on his hand, a little hidden behind his sleeve.
SANEYO: Wait—
Before I could ask him about it, he and Nene had already left the kitchen. The other three left were quick to fill me in on what they all had left to do, and I resigned myself to my new duty.
The FeastA few hours later, the food for the feast was done. It looked… edible. It wasn’t as nice as anything that was probably going to be prepared for us the first night, but hopefully the others wouldn’t mind?
We all reconvened with everyone else in the dining hall. The food had been served by a perky Nene and an overly sweet Teishi, though she had complained during the night about how Nene wasn’t being fast enough about it. Regardless, everyone seemed to be in high spirits.
YUKITSUNA: Hey— I thought you weren’t gonna show up?
In the entranceway was Masamori. He stared at the rest of us with his usual frown.
MASAMORI: I didn’t intend to at first, but I had nothing else to do and figured I’d like to watch you all make fools out of yourself at least for a little while.
YUKITSUNA: Well, don’t just stand there! C’mon, join in and have a bite and drink!
MASAMORI: Um… that’s really not necessary…
YUKITSUNA: Don’t be a party pooper!
MASAMORI: Unhand me!
Yukitsuna practically manhandled Masamori to the only empty seat in the room and forced him to sit with the rest of us. The poison tester grumbled, but he made no sign of leaving once he was there and Yukitsuna returned to his own place. Nene came to serve him food before rejoining Teishi towards the kitchen where they disappeared.
Not too long after Masamori had some food, he spit it out. The disgust upon his face was evident.
NOBUYORI: Not a fan I presume?
MASAMORI: ...Not in the slightest.
HARUHARU: Well, yer loss! It tastes //fine//.
MASAMORI: I see peasants are easily placated by simple food.
NENE: Nuh-uh! You two are NOT starting a fight! Not tonight! Geez, did you forget the whole point of this thing?
Nene and Teishi re-emerged from the kitchen just in time to witness the brewing spat between Haruharu and Masamori. The two carried with them various bottles.
Behind them was Akinari, who appeared to be coming to join the party.
SANEYO: Akinari! I thought you were on guard duty.
AKINARI: Don’t worry, Miss Saneyo. Oichi, Gozen, and I have decided to take shifts.
I watched as drinks were poured and people were sipping and downing their small drinking glasses.
SANEYO: Akinari, are you not going to drink any?
AKINARI: I have no interest in alcohol, Miss Saneyo. I’m pretty sure it just rots the mind.
NENE: Right, you’re not a fan, huh...
NENE: You should drink some though, Saneyo! It’s not really a feast without some sake!
NENE: And if you don’t feel like you can walk right after it, I can bring you back to your room afterwards or maybe Akinari can since he’s not drinking? Whatever, just don’t worry a thing and drink up! You deserve it, Saneyo!
I assume she means after subbing in for Marcelis in the kitchen earlier today. She eagerly pours me a serving and I can’t help but feel compelled to drink. She’s already on her feet to refill everyone else’s drinks, and I sit there watching everyone else have fun and loosen up.
Time seems to blur and an hour passes by in what feels like a few moments. I had been snacking on some food and hesitantly sipping on the sake. Akinari ate the food, but still refused to drink any of the sake. I just wondered if his mouth must be dry because of it.
I turn to Akinari, intending to make sure he’s not feeling left out, but I watch him stand up.
AKINARI: I’m.. I’m sorry. I should… Probably be going back to… Back to guard duty.
SANEYO: Akinari?!
BitterHe begins to leave, his steps quick and a little shaky. I follow him out into the hallways, leaving everyone else behind to try and catch up to him. On my way, I collide into Gozen and Oichi.
GOZEN: Saneyo?! What’s the rush.
SANEYO: I-I’m really sorry! But I’m in a hurry I need to get to Akinari!
OICHI: I’ll come with you. Gozen, stay on guard duty until we get back.
GOZEN: Ugh. Fine.
I bow, grateful, for Oichi’s help and the two of us scurry to catch up with Akinari. When we see him, he’s collapsed onto the ground in the middle of the corridor.
SANEYO: Akinari?! Please get up!
…
SANEYO: Akinari please!!
No matter what I said, he wouldn’t respond. I could hear the footsteps of Gozen coming in from behind us.
GOZEN: Saneyo?! Akinari?! Is everything alright?
All of a sudden, the sound of a gong resounded through the night air. However, it was not just any gong: it was the special noise that Terubozu had assigned to murders.
I felt the world spiral around me and was only brought back to my senses when I heard a cacophony of footsteps behind me. I turned once I heard someone shriek.
SHIGETAKA: Wh-what’s going on?!
TEISHI: I...Is that-?!
TERUBOZU: Did you guess Akinari? If so, D-I-N-G~!
Terubozu flew in and hovered above us. A cheery laughter emitted from it, and it carried with it my worst fears.
TERUBOZU: C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S ! One of you killed Akinari! You r e a l l y did it!
Hearing it confirmed from Terubozu suddenly made the night air feel dreadfully cold. Akinari had not just fallen and would get better after we carried him to a futon to rest and careful, attentive watch.
My friend was really, truly, honest to goodness, actually dead and I couldn’t do anything to change that.
