"I must protest my ugly treatment these last few days, since you have decided to bring it up," you reply angrily. "I am not only your wife, but the queen of this backwater! I am entitled to some respect!"\n\nThe king looks shocked. "Pardon me, madam?" \n\n"You heard me very clear, please do not insult my intelligence with this display." \n\n"Very well, if that's where you'd like this to go. I tried to be polite, but if you insist on continuing to play the petulent child, I can continue to treat you like one. Do not forget, my dear wife, you are no longer in Mervia. You are next to friendless here. Your power comes from what I am gracious enough to afford you. Do not forget that!" \n\n"We shall see about that," you reply. "If you'll excuse me, your majesty." \n\nYou leave the royal apartments and [[spend the night in your own quaters.|temp end]]
Oden's research into new crops finds that branching out into more legumes has the double effect of keeping your peasants more healthy, and making the soil healthier. Janus frowns, and makes small talk with you for a little bit, but is obviously relieved when another noble requests his attention. He slowly begins drinking more as well, and soon he is quite drunk. \n\nSuddenly, a horn is blown, and the room erupts in ribald cheers. \n\n[["What is going on?"|bedding negative]] you ask the Dowager Duchess Villamine, who has come to make converastion with you in your mutual native tongue. \n
"What do you mean?" The king asks, taking a sip of his wine. \n\nYou consider your words carefully. "I mean, we have been entrusted this position by the Lord Above himself. A capable administrator is a boon in some matters, but in others our word is the only one that matters. To neglect this is to neglect your very existence as ruler." \n\n"I must say, I had never seen it quite like that before." \n\n[[Offer your support and advice on any matter, no matter how small.|courtly intimacy cunning 2]]\n\n[[Suggest that you would be willing to relieve your husband of some of these burdens, if that is his will.|courtly intimacy ambitious]]

You spend the day in a flurry of preparations for the wedding, which is to take place in three days. Most of the preparations have already been done, with food for the feast having been shipped into Karza for almost a year, but there are still many last minute things that need to be done now that you are finally in the country. \n\nA trip to the seamstress to do the final fittings on your gown, blue silk trimmed with silk thread, considered to be lucky in Karst. You brought a hairdresser as part of your retinue to make sure that your hair is in the latest style, and you spend much of the afternoon discussing what will be best. It's all much more complicated than you thought it would be, for how you are perceived at your wedding can have a huge impact on how much the people will like you. \n\nThe hairdresser asks you what sort of look you think is best. \n\n[[Something simple.|wedding positive 1]]\n\n[[Something elaborate and trendy.|wedding negative 1]]
King Janus seems a bit offended that you have not curtsied to him and shown the proper deference, but kisses your hand nonetheless. \n\n"Come, let me [[show you around our beautiful castle,"|welcome to Karza Keep]] he says affably, and leads you into your new home to give you the grand tour. \n\n
"A pleasure indeed, Your Majesty. You did very well today, word is people are very impressed with you. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have business to attend to." Duke Kranz gets up and leaves you alone, but his mother, Villamine, is quick to take his place.\n\nYou are stuck in dull conversation with the old nearly the whole evening, while the king appears to get very drunk. You are startled when you hear a horn blow. The room then erupts in ribald cheers, mostly from the male portion of the room. \n\nYou do not realize how much time has passed until a horn is blown, and the room erupts in ribald cheers. \n\n[["What is going on?"|bedding negative]] you ask the dowager duchess.
You awaken the next day, a bit depressed, but eager to throw yourself into your new duties as queen of Karst. After bathing and dressing, you have a light breakfast in your sitting room. After you've eaten, one of your maids brings in a nervous looking young man carrying a ledger. She announces that he's your secretary. \n\n"Please sit down," you tell the young man. "I assume you're here to tell me what I need to do today." \n\n"Y-yes your majesty." \n\n"You can start with your name." \n\n"Of course your majesty. I'm Oden. You open your mouth to speak, and are surprised when Janus actually speaks to you first. \n\n"You look beautiful today, my lady," he says. The king takes your hand and kisses you on the forehead. \n\n"Of course, my love." He stands and motions to the court to be quiet. \n\n"It is with regret that I have to request that the bedding ceremony not be conducted tonight. It is my gift to my new bride, whose customs are different than ours. I wish to give her at least part of the wedding that follows Mervian traditions, as a sign of our new friendship." Janus raises his wineglass towards the Mervian emissary. "May our new alliance withstand the tests of generations!"\n\nThe court seems a tad disappointed, and the jovial air quickly dies down, but no one questions the king. Janus is savvy enough to have a servant tell the troubadours to play something a little more upbeat, and soon the party is back in full swing. You are almost ready to fall asleep on your plate when Janus takes your hand and you both [[depart for the bedchamber.|in the bedchamber private]]
You and the king are deposited in the royal bedchamber, where your maids and his manservants await to undress you. \n\nThe high lords, Lord Coxwell, Duke Kranz, Victor D'Marca who is there to represent your family, and a few others whose names you do not remember take their seats around the room in full sight of the bed. You can hear what sounds like the entire population of Karst outside the door. \n\nSoon you are in your shift and in bed with Janus, the gauzy curtains drawn. He smooths your hair and kisses you gently on the lips. \n\n"Are you ready?" You nod. \n\nJanus tries to be as gentle as possible, though it still hurts. You can tell that he doesn't like hurting you and you try to reassure him as much as possible. You knew it was going to hurt a little. \n\nHe kicks out the high lords the moment it's appropriate to do so. \n\n"Would you like me to leave as well, husband?" \n\nHe pulls you close. "No, I'm not done with you yet." \n\nYou spend what [[remains of the night|queenly duties positive]] getting to know each other much better, and learning what it means to be more than just a wife.
"Oh child," the dowager answers. "What is there to tell? There's no culture, no art here, almost no beauty, unless you like trees. There are increasingly more heathens here every day. You'd never know this place is as wealthy as it is. It's quite unlike anywhere I've ever been, but not in a good way."\n\n"All you need to know my dear is how to find a decent seamstress, how to stay warm in winter, and how to please your husband. Everything else is up to the king and his councillors to work out, not us women. Don't try to rise above your place and you will do fine here. These Karstian men are not fond of a woman with an opinion." \n\nYou thank the dowager duchess for her counsel, and try to enjoy the rest of feast. You see no need to make any improvements to the farming system in your lands if there is no need to. It's fine for now. \n\n"Would you like to [[try something else?|duchess of letz]]" asks your secretary.
"The Aliat Empire is very wealthy, and very powerful. Maybe it does make sense to take advantage of that, my lord," you suggest to Janus. He thinks on it a moment, and agrees. \n\nLord Coxwell looks pleased that you've both come over to his side, though several other members of council, particularly Duke Kranz, seem a bit displeased with this ruling. It turns out that much of that land lies near Kranz's duchy, and he had hoped to take advantage of that. \n\nYou also learn that Karst and the Aliat Empire were once fierce rivals, constantly raiding each other, and even enslaving their people. It hasn't been until quite recently, since the time of Janus' grandfather, that a truce was negotiated. For the most part this has held, though nomadic tribes from the east, not technically under the jurisdiction of the Aliat Emperor, occasionally will raid Karst's borders. Since Karstian timber has been in such high demand, so has Aliat interest in Karstian trade. Given this past, much of the nobility, especially the border lords, are still not entirely trustworthy of the Aliat. \n\nCouncil lasts well into late afternoon, and afterwards you receive an invitation via your secretary by Lord Coxwell to [[dine with him.|dinner with the high steward]]
It would be a lie if you said you were not scared. Of course you're scared. But you are a princess, now a queen, of the blood, and it would be a disservice to your ancestry and training if you let it show. You find it quite charming that your lord husband seems so apologetic about it. \n\nYou take his hand. "Do not fret, this will be fine." \n\nSuddenly, your chair is swept up by by the royal guards, with your husband beside you, while a bawdy song plays. Janus does not let go of your hand. \n\nYou are both [[whisked away to the royal bedchamber|in the bedchamber positive]] while courtiers and guests make very uncouth remarks about the royal persons.
The Karstian wedding ceremony is simple and straightforward. The priest recites the vows, and the couple exchange plain steel bands that are decorated with runic symbols for fertility, happiness, and good health. \n\nThen comes the coronation. The crown of the queen of Karst is a rather plain circlet, also inlaid with runes. It fits easily on your head with your simple hairstyle, and is heavier than you expected. You sigh with relief that nothing has gone wrong. \n\nThe formalities over with, it is time for [[the wedding feast.|wedding feast positive]]\n
The big day finally arrives, and you are woken at dawn and immediately dunked in a bath filled with scented oil. You are dressed in your gown, and your hair is adorned in a simple twist. \n\nThe Karstian royal wedding is an all day affair, beginning with the bride and groom taking a ride around the city in a carriage, while its residents throw flowers in order to bless the marriage. You are greeted after your toilette and breakfast by the Mervian amabassador to Karst, Victor D'Marca. He is a balding, middle aged man dressed in the Mervian fashion, albeit the Mervian fashion from before you were born. He bows deeply, and you have refreshments brought to the foyer while you sit down and converse. \n\n"Good morning, your highness. I have come this morning to introduce myself less formally and to offer my services as your guide in this court. I have been here for many years, and I know many things about the Karstians. If ever you need anything, I am here to be your ally and friend.\n\n"I am also available to advise you in any diplomatic matters between Mervia and Karst. As queen of Karst, we hope you do not forget your homeland entirely.\n\n"Highness, I am pleased to see you have made a good impression on good King Janus last night," he said. "Our king is an easy man to please, as long as you know the way. Just be careful not to distract too much of his time, for I heard some mutterings from those who had hoped to seek favour last night. The wedding feast is a rollicking, 7 course affair. Both noble and commoner are invited and able to sup at the king's expense, though naturally the common folk are not allowed into the inner keep. The food is simpler than you're used to, but is not terrible. Mead and wine are even more abundant than at the welcome feast. From the look in his eyes, you can tell that King Janus is well pleased with what he sees. The gathered court, however, does not. He takes your hand with both of his and helps you to your feet. \n\n"Come my dear, let me [[show you around our beautiful castle,"|welcome to Karza Keep]] he says affably, and leads you into your new home to give you the grand tour. \n
You're not sure what to make of this invitation with the lord high steward. The highest office in the land, Lord Coxwell wields enormous power and influence at court, and it is known that Janus often turns to him to make important decisions and even preside over council. You know little about the man personally at this point, though whispers have told you he is extremely intelligent and shrewd. He is not a man to be toyed with. \n\nServants take you to his quarters in the palace, which are in very close proximity to the king's. The dinner is a simple one, and Coxwell's family, his wife, the Lady Maria, and two daughters, Emme and Marta, who are around your age. All bow and curtsy as you enter, and the family does not sit until you are seated. \n\nThe dinner is pleasant enough, and Lord Coxwell's family are agreeable enough, and try to entertain you with stories about the court. But you know this is not Lord Coxwell's intent inviting you here, and it's not until he dismisses his ladies from the table that he [[gets to his point.|dinner with the high steward 2]] \n\n
Diversifying Letz's trade goods will take more time. Oden and Sir Marsh are searching for a new unique product througout the duchy that will be an asset to trade. This is easier said than done. For now, farming and woodworking is stable enough. \n\nSoon the end of the day is upon you, and it's time to [[rest.|temp end]] You were so engrossed in learning your new role that you barely noticed the time passing.
You attempt to make small talk with His Majesty, and he answers in short, curt, answers. It's clear he has no interest in talking to you. He seems to be displeased with you, but you're not entirely sure why. It makes for a *very* awkward few hours. Your hair is also very heavy and starts to hurt your head, and it doesn't hold up well in the humidity of the carriage. \n\nBy the time you finally arrive at [[Mellen Abbey|wedding negative 2]], Karza's richest and largest church, your hair is frizzy and drooping. The abbey though is by far the most impressive building to date, obviously newer than most of the other buildings in the city. You summon the Mervian emissary to see if he has any contacts for importing heavy plows from the south. It turns out that he does, and you work on bringing them into you new lands. \n\nSome of the lesser nobility in your domain complain about the change, particularly the older ones, but since you are importing them at your own expense they don't do anything to stop you. \n\nYields go up around your domain, and the peasants seem pleased with their new tool, because it saves them so much time and helps drain the fields during the rainy season. \n\nSoon the end of the day is upon you, and it's time to [[rest.|temp end]] You were so engrossed in learning your new role that you barely noticed the time passing.
You arrive in the council chambers as the rest of the King's Council has just arrived. All stand to bow when you enter, though none of them look happy about your presence, particularly Lord Coxwell, Lord High Steward. You know he has been one of the most powerful men at court for years now, and has been the one who has had the King's ear. He obviously feels threatened by your own intimacy with your husband, and fears what you might do with it. \n\nJanus seems very happy to see you again so soon, and he takes your hand and guides you to your seat at his right hand. \n\n"Well, this day just got more interesting," he whispers to you, before addressing the other men in the room and calling the council to session. A clerk sits in the corner, ready to take notes. \n\n"Today we have some pressing matters to attend to regarding free land along the Karza river," Lord Coxwell begins. "Trade with the Aliat Empire has never been higher, and we have many interested purchasing land there for the trade implications. Merchants from nearly every land have made bids, but the highest have been from the Mervians, local Karstians, and the Aliat themselves. Personally, I think selling to the Aliats will improve relations with them, though we should add an extra tax for non-residents to appease the nobles."\n\nJanus frowns. "I'm not sure that's such a good idea...I would prefer to keep such valuable land in Karstian hands." He looks to you. You propose that Mervia of course be taxed extra for this privelege, as Lord Coxwell suggested for the Aliat. You can tell the council approves of this slightly more, and Lord Coxwell likes that you were favourable to his idea, but you can tell you've made no friends here, though Janus decrees going ahead with this plan. \n\n\nCouncil lasts well into late afternoon, and afterwards Janus invites you to [[dine with him.|courtly intimacy]]

"That lot, sends their best regards, do they? Easy for them, they weren't sold off like a sack of potatoes to a man with all the brains of one." \n\nYou are so taken aback that you have no choice but to let the Duchess continue. Luckily, she does all of this in Mervian, which no one else at the high table speaks. \n\n"I tell you my dear, there is no culture here. I am simply starved for it. You must come and visit me sometime and tell me about all the goings on in Mervia. I must hear about what the latest fashion is. Tell me, is that how they're doing the sleeves these days? I'm not sure if my seamstress will be able to match Mervian craftsmanship, but the poor girl does indeed try..."\n\nThe old woman prattles on for hours, and the only way to get away from her is to plead ill health. "If you would like me to take on some of these duties, know that I am here to do so, if that is your will, Lord Husband. I would like to be both companion and helpmeet, if that is what you want. I just hope you do not regret telling me so!" \n\n"If that is what pleases you, how could I regret it? I would not be much of a queen otherwise." \n\n"My dear lady, do I need to be afraid of your silver tongue?" Janus says this with a laugh. \n\n"Of course not, your grace. My silver tongue is ever at your service." You say this with a meaningful look, and Janus is more than happy to [[take the hint.|temp end]]
You decide to engage your husband in less political topics in order to take his mind off of these weighty matters. You spend your dinner continuing to get to know this stranger that you have married. \n\nYou find that he is an engaging storyteller, with a great love for the history and myths of his people, particularly how his ancestor, Sweyn Norden, united the jarls of ancient Karst into one kingdom through the might of his axe and the charm of his personality. He tells you that he feels he could never live up to that kind of legacy. \n\nJanus is also a great lover of music, though not the type of music you grew up with. He likes to hunt, and one of his favourite things is raising horses. He has even created a new breed by cross breeding the shaggy, stout workhorses of Karst with the fast, sleek, smaller horses from the Aliat, creating a tougher, faster breed with great speed and endurance, and a greater tolerance for the cold. \n\nYou try to be as attentive a listener as possible. Your mother once told you that while kings have no shortage of people who want to tell them what to do, they often do not have anyone who will listen, truly listen, and often a queen's greatest service can be simply to be the one person that will do that. \n\nThe candles are nearly half the size they were when the servants first lit them, and your husband [[invites you to stay the night again.|temp end]]
You are greeted after your toilette and breakfast by the Mervian amabassador to Karst, Victor D'Marca. He is a balding, middle aged man dressed in the Mervian fashion, albeit the Mervian fashion from before you were born. As queen of Karst, we hope you do not forget your homeland entirely.\n\n"I hope you don't find this too forward, but I heard many whispers of your actions last night. Many people noticed you did not speak to the king, and that you left early. People are becoming concerned about the viability of your marriage. You must make more of an effort to make yourself pleasing to your future husband, for our alliance counts on you giving him heirs. It is part of the marriage contract that he can put you aside if the union proves unfruitful." \n\nYou are a bit shocked. This is not something that your mother had told you, or even something you had really thought about in more than an abstract way. \n\n[["I will do my best, sir. Thank you for your counsel."|wedding preparations positive]]
"Those stuffy old things? There is truly nothing like a Karstian comedy. There is always a dancing bear. Always. I find those men with the painted faces quite terrifying, actually." \n\n"Truly!?"\n\nYou pass the rest of your time together talking about books, and art, and the theatre. King Janus is, quite to your surprise, a fan of all three, though his taste differs greatly from yours. You both periodically pause your conversation to do your duty and wave at the gathered subjects, who seem to be very pleased with their new queen, at least for now. \n\nYou finally arrive at [[Mellen Abbey|wedding positive 2]], Karza's richest and largest church. It is by far the most impressive building to date, obviously newer than most of the other buildings in the city. The inside is even more impressive, full of richly decorated reliefs and almost dripping with gold leaf. \n
You are startled by such a large man's nearness, and can't help but move away from him a little. It's not really your fault, being 14 years old. But Janus notes your body language, and spends the rest of the feast ignoring you. \n\nYou take your leave early, which is noted by all present, and [[spend the night disappointed in yourself for making such a poor impression.|meet the Mervian emissary negative]] \n\n
You take a deep breath, and try to still the thundering of your heart. You had thought you were ready for this part, but you definitely weren't ready for it to be so...public. Your mother, your maids, not even Duchess Villamine had warned you about this custom, and it is a daunting prospect. \n\nYuo must look pale because the dowager pats you on the hand awkwardly. "It's really not so bad. My son will be there. He will make sure you come to no harm, I have raised him well." \n\nIt's a cold comfort, but you squeeze her hand encouragingly. Suddenly, your chair is swept up by by the royal guards, with your husband beside you, while a bawdy song plays. Janus is drunk and laughing uproariously at the song, which is clearly a favourite of his. If he's afraid, he gives no sign. \n\nYou are both [[whisked away to the royal bedchamber|in the bedchamber negative]] while courtiers and guests make very uncouth remarks about the royal persons.
"Of course, your grace. I am here to serve." \n\nYou wave a hand for Oden to continue. \n\n"The main town of Letzenberg, which is where your main castle is, lies along the Lind and is the main point of commerce. There have been more and more craftsmen setting up shop there in recent years, particularly carpenters and woodworkers. Their work is well known throughout Karst. That chair you're sitting in now is from Letzenberg, your majesty." \n\nYou take a moment to admire the intricate carvings on your red wood chair. It's a very intricate style, quite unique from anything you'd seen in the south. The arms are carved into mythical dragons, and the feet of the chair are its mightly claws.\n\n"To the south of Letzenberg is Millford, an agricultural centre, and a cathedral town in the northeast called Felterly." \n\n[[Ask Oden to look into developing the woodworking trade.|letz woodwork]]\n\n[[Ask Oden to look into developing other trades.|letz diversifying]]\n\n[[Ask about something else.|duchess of letz]]
"Yes, I suppose we now are. I am having a tolerable enough time, Your Majesty. I want to personally congratulate you on your nuptials. His Majesty has been searching a long time for a bride with just the right...attributes." \n\nYou can tell he means your dowry and trade agreements, and not your own self. \n\n"Now, I hope you will excuse me, cousin, I have much business to attend to tonight. I believe my mother has been wanting to talk to you. She is so pleased to have someone from her homeland to speak with." \n\nThe dowager dominates your evening, and most other noblewomen seem too intimidated by her presence to come and interrupt her. The king, meanwhile, works on getting thoroughly drunk. \n\nYou do not realize how much time has passed until a horn is blown, and the room erupts in ribald cheers. \n\n[["What is going on?"|bedding negative]] you ask the dowager duchess.
"I think maintaining local interests makes the most sense. Karst must always come first if we are to be competitive, wouldn't you say? Surely there is some other way we can appease the Aliats, without giving them valuable crown land?" \n\nJanus seems to approve of you agreeing with him, though unfortunately the issue of how to appease the Aliat is not a simple one. \n\nYou learn that Karst and the Aliat Empire were once fierce rivals, constantly raiding each other, and even enslaving their people. It is a precarious situation, with no easy solution, and council eventually must move on to other business. \n\nCouncil lasts well into late afternoon, and afterwards Janus invites you to [[dine with him.|patching things up]]
Janus seems shocked by your question, but you can tell that he appreciates its playfulness. \n\n"Why, you are so small, with such a tiny waist, that I daresay you could not even finish that cup!"\n\nWith a wicked smirk, you pick up your full cup of mead and down it in one gulp. You feel dizzy, and warm, and Janus laughs at your boldness. Janus spends the rest of the feast jesting with you and feeding you Karstian delicacies from his own plate. You are pleased with your own success, but it seems that many of the king's male courtiers are displeased that you monopolized their leige's attention. \n\nYour servants have to help you back to your rooms by the end of the feast, [[but you sleep soundly and without care.|meet the Mervian emissary positive]]
You awaken the next day sore and tired, but ready to take on new challenges now that you are officially the annointed queen. You arrange to have clothing brought over from your quarters to dress, and have a light breakfast with Janus, who is conversational and in a good mood. \n\nThe king's secretary arrives as you both finish, along with another young man. \n\n"This is your secretary, my queen. As queen of Karst you are also the Duchess of Letz, in additon to your other properties. Oden here will help you in any task regarding its adminstration. I would also be interested to have you join me in council today, if that would please you." \n\n[[Leave Oden in charge of any of Letz affairs and go to council.|council positive]]\n\n[[Stay with Oden to learn about your new holdings.|duchess of letz]]\n\n
You are a princess of the kingdom of Mervia. Since you were very young, you have been betrothed to the king of the kingdom of Karst, a harsh, remote place to the northeast of your homeland, in order to secure the rights to their vast amounts of timber in order to build ships. \n\nYou have recently turned 14 years old, and are finally considered old enough to be wed. Tearful, you are sent away from your family with gifts for your future husband and no idea of what future lies in store for you. \n\nAfter a seasickness-filled voyage north, and a rickety carriage ride overland to the capital, Karza, [[you finally arrive at your destination.|meet your king]]\n
The king drinks heavily, even more so than at the last feast. \n\nYour hair has since been taken down by the hairdresser and arranged artfully over your shoulders, so that your royal crown can sit properly on your head. \n\nYou are again seated at Janus' left, but this time his cousin, Duke Kranz, is sitting on your other side. \n\n[[Talk to Janus.|Janus wedding feast convo negative]]\n\n[[Talk to Duke Kranz.|Rex wedding feast convo]]\n
Janus chuckles at your jest, then pauses a moment, as if mulling something over. You have been sitting across from each other in the carriage, and he suddenly decides to come over to your side and take your hand. There is barely room between you and your gown. \n\n"Sir, you'll muss my dress!"\n\n"You are simply too enchanting a creature for me to be so far away from you." He kisses your hand. "The Lord Above could not have sent me a better wife. I have no idea what I have done to deserve such good fortune." \n\nYou spend the rest of the carriage ride in amiable conversation, and Janus does not let go of your hand for a moment. The people erupt in cheers when you both decide to stick your head out of the carriage and give them a glimpse of their new king and queen. \n\nYour gown is indeed very wrinkled when you finally arrive at [[Mellen Abbey|wedding positive 2]], but you feel it was worth it. Mellen Abbey is Karza's richest and largest church. It is by far the most impressive building to date, obviously newer than most of the other buildings in the city. The inside is even more impressive, full of richly decorated reliefs and almost dripping with gold leaf. \n
"Please, tell me what I need to know about Letz," you say to Oden. \n\n"Yes, your grace. Letz is about 50 km south of Karza, along the Lind river. It's mostly farmland, but there's a greater merchant presence since trade along the Lind has picked up with the south's desire for our timber. As part of central Karst, it's politically very stable, and you don't have to worry too much about invaders or anything like that. Your viceroy's name is Sir Ogden Marsh, a fairly capable man, formerly a palace steward for your husband's father. Is there anything else you'd like to know?" \n\n[[Ask about towns.|letz towns]]\n\n[[Ask about farming techniques.|letz farming]]
The royal bedchamber is not empty, of course. Both your maids and your husband's manservants await you there to help you take off your heavy finery. They are very good at their job, and you stand in nothing but your underclothes in no time. Janus dismisses them. \n\nYou giggle nervously. "I hope you have not angered anyone by accepting my silly request." \n\n"Of course not. You're my wife. You are entitled some respect. Now, come to the bed." \n\nYou do so, you spend [[what remains of the night|queenly duties positive]] getting to know each other much better.
"Why must we sell the land to anyone?" You ask. "In the south, we parcel off much smaller bits than this, and lease it to those who are willing to pay. It's certainly large enough. Why not say yes to all three?" \n\n"This does make the most sense financially, your grace, especially if we take Lord Coxwell's suggestion and tax all foreign interests," says Duke Kranz. \n\n"Well, it seems I have a much more clever little bird at my side than I originally assumed," replies King Janus with a smile. "Look into it, my lords." \n\nCouncil lasts well into late afternoon, and afterwards Janus invites you to [[dine with him.|courtly intimacy]]
Janus blushes, which looks rather odd with his beard. "I...had forgotten about this part. It's the bedding ceremony. Surely someone told you about it?" \n\nYou shake your head. \n\n"I'm so sorry," the king says, sounding actually apologetic. "I should have had someone explain this to you, but I didn't realize...it's part of the uh...consummation ritual." Janus turns even redder. "It's not...private. The high lords will be there." \n\n[["I understand, I think. Very well"|proceed bedding positive]]\n\n[["Please my lord, I don't think I can..."|stop bedding positive]]\n
"Madam, you forget your place. I am your lord husband now. I am not a cruel man without cause, so pray you do not give me any." There is a coldness in his eyes that truly frightens you. \n\nYou fight back tears and try to do your duty by accepting the introductions of the Karstian noblewomen. The king, meanwhile, decides to indulge his desire for drink, and gets louder as the night goes on. \n\nEventually you are rescued (or are you?) from your duty by the Duchess Villamine, who scares away any other ladies. You do not realize how much time has passed until a horn is blown, and the room erupts in ribald cheers. \n\n[["What is going on?"|bedding negative]] you ask the dowager duchess.
"I think maintaining local interests makes the most sense. Karst must always come first if we are to be competitive, wouldn't you say? Surely there is some other way we can appease the Aliats, without giving them valuable crown land?" \n\nJanus seems pleased that you agree with him, and while Lord Coxwell doesn't seem to like being opposed on council, he can't really argue with your logic. Talk then turns to other ways that you can solidify relations with the Aliat Empire, on which no one can come to an agreement. \n\nYou learn that Karst and the Aliat Empire were once fierce rivals, constantly raiding each other, and even enslaving their people. It hasn't been until quite recently, since the time of Janus' grandfather, that a truce was negotiated. For the most part this has held, though nomadic tribes from the east, not technically under the jurisdiction of the Aliat Emperor, occasionally will raid Karst's borders. It is a precarious situation, with no easy solution, and council eventually must move on to other business. \n\nCouncil lasts well into late afternoon, and afterwards Janus invites you to [[dine with him.|courtly intimacy]]
"Oh, I'm sure a young lady as capable as yourself would have found no problem, but I thank you for the compliment. It really does much for a man's ego to know that a woman can't live without him, but I can tell you already know that." Janus winks at you. \n\nYou spend the feast with the king, jesting and flirting, but remembering D'Marco's advice not to completely monopolize his time. He continues to hold your hand and touch you (albeit appropriately) at every chance he can get. \n\nYou do not realize how much time has passed until a horn is blown, and the room erupts in ribald cheers. \n\n[["What is going on?"|bedding positive]] you ask the king.
"As your majesty commands."\n\nOden and Sir Marsh are very good at their jobs indeed, and they work on attracting more skilled craftsmen to Letzenberg and increasing the reach of the trade. Your wealth grows. \n\nSoon the end of the day is upon you, and it's time to [[rest.|temp end]] You were so engrossed in learning your new role that you barely noticed the time passing.
The king is clearly in his cups, and obviously not in the mood for formality. He replies as courteously as he is able in his condition, but it quickly becomes apparent that he would prefer to be speaking to anyone else. You spend another hour at the feast, awkward and unsure of what you should be doing, before you decide enough time has passed to take your leave. Janus kisses your hand, very sloppily, and allows you to leave. \n\nThe spend the night [[despondant and depressed.|meet the Mervian emissary negative]]
"If ever you feel you are in need of advice, on any matter, please do not hesitate to come to me, husband. I might be quite demanding." \n\n"As is your right." \n\n"Now, I believe there are other duties that we must occupy ourselves with. For the sake of the realm, of course." \n\nYou must admit, you have a much better time [[fulfilling them this time around.|temp end]]
The king's nearness makes you feel embarassed, for you've never been in such close proximity to a man who is not a member of your family before. It feels quite strange. Luckily for you, you blush quite prettily, and Janus seems to find amusement rather than offense in your reaction. He spends the rest of the feast doting on you, feeding you cakes make of tasrt berries and cheese, as well as other Karstian delicacies that you find quite strange. \n\nJanus has you send to your rooms once he notices that you tire, and you [[spend the night sleeping soundly and quite pleased with making a good impression on the king.|meet the Mervian emissary positive]]\n\n
"You have quite thoroughly embarassed me today," he continues. "I had worried about marrying someone so young, and so foreign, and it looks like I was right," Janus sighs. "But now it appears we are stuck together, and I have no cause to get rid of you unless you can't give me sons. So I suggest we smile and get it over with."\n\nThe king then proceeds to spend the rest of the feast drinking and jesting with his friends and close family (often at their expense, and not entirely with their participation). \n\nDespodant, you spend the evening greeting some of the noblewomen of the court, before being monopolized by the Dowager Duchess Villamine. You do not realize how much time has passed until a horn is blown, and the room erupts in ribald cheers. \n\n[["What is going on?"|bedding negative]] you ask the dowager duchess.

The Dowager Duchess Villamine is a thin, proud looking woman in her early 50s. She picks at the food, which is heavy on the meat and root vegetables at this time of year due to the cold climate. There is a twinkle in the king's eye, and you can tell he approves of your response. He spends the rest of the feast regaling you with Karstian legends, tales of Warrior Queens and giants and witches and winters that last for many seasons. You are very impressed with his storytelling skills, and his warm manner and attention leaves you quite flattered. \n\nHowever, it becomes obvious that many of the other courtiers do not approve of your forward manner, and the fact that you have monopolized almost all of the king's attention for the evening. Whether or not the king notices this too becomes irrelevant, because he talks with you until the feast is over. \n\nJanus kisses your hand gallantly before you take your leave of each other, and you spend the night [[pleased with your success and happy that the king seems to be a decent man.|meet the Mervian emissary positive]]\n\n
You turn to your new husband and beg him to skip this part of the ceremony. \n\n"This is not the way a princess, no a queen, should be treated!" \n\nJanus, quite flushed with drunk, brushes away your concern. "You are not in Mervia anymore my dear, and I am your Lord Husband now. You will do as a command, and it is my will that the ceremony will proceed." He leans in, as if to offer comfort, but instead squeezes your arm under the table, hard. "I don't want to force you or hurt you, but I will if it comes to that." He then kisses you on the brow. From far away, it must look like you were sharing a private, intimate moment. \n\n[[Yes, my lord," you reply meekly.|in the bedchamber negative]]
You're not sure what to say to your future husband, for you've never been truly alone before. Luckily, he decides to speak first. \n\n"You look truly beautiful today, my lady," he says. "I believe the court and my people can find no fault with your appearance today."\n\n[["Thank you, your Grace."|carriage formal]]\n\n[["Your approval means so much to me, your majesty. Duke Rex Kranz takes after his mother, the Dowager Duchess Villamine, and he is very tall and thin. He is roughly the same age as the king, and the next in line as it currently stands. Despite being the King's cousin, the only thing they seem to share in common are their brown eyes, though Rex's are more flecked with green. His clothing is very rich and fine, almost more so than the king's. You remember that he is also the Lord Treasurer, which must put him in a position to buy such things. \n\n[["I do not believe I have had the pleasure of making your acquaintance, Duke Kranz. "My nephew? Oh, he's an alright man, if that's what you're asking. He'll probably be a decent enough husband. Loves the drink a little too much, a little too prone to flattery, if you ask me. He has no head for politics. If Lord Coxwell were not Lord Steward nothing would get done around here. But I'm sure you don't care about that."\n\n"You probably want to know about the mistress, don't you? Countess Velden. Well, you're certainly younger than her, and I daresay prettier, though what these boors consider for beauty is beyond me most of the time. She is a crafty one though. I would keep an eye on her, my dear." \n\nYou aren't sure that you wanted to know this information, or even what you can do with it. You take your leave as soon as it is prudent to do so, and [[spend the night worrying about the mysterious Countess Velden.|meet the Mervian emissary negative]]
You suggest that as your allies, Mervia should receive special consideration in this instance. \n\n"Absolutely not! There is much more at stake here than just Mervia!" says Duke Kranz, visibly unhappy. It turns out that this land lies quite close to Kranz's own domain, and he had hoped to take advantage of that. \n\n"Now, there's no need for histrionics, though I quite agree with you," Lord Coxwell replies without batting an eyelash. "You may not realize, your hi-I mean, your majesty, that we also have our delicate relations with the Aliat to consider here, as well as our own." \n\nYou learn that Karst and the Aliat Empire were once fierce rivals, constantly raiding each other, and even enslaving their people. Since Karstian timber has been in such high demand, so has Aliat interest in Karstian trade. \n\n"Might I suggest we table this for now, gentlemen?" Janus asked, obviously getting bored with the whole affair. Council moves on to other business, and you make sure to sit and listen instead of interjecting for the rest of the session. \n\nCouncil lasts well into late afternoon, and afterwards you bid your husband good night and [[return to your own chambers.|temp end]] \n\n
"I want to sincerely apologize for my actions these last days, Lord Husband. I am but a young woman, and this is all so new to me. I fear I let my emotions get the better of me. I would very much like to make this marriage work. I am not naturally a cruel man. I prefer to have my wives like me. But you must put forth more of an effort." \n\n"Of course, my lord."\n\n"Now that we have that untidy business out of the way, let us move on to more pleasant topics." \n\n"Please." \n\nThe king spends the rest of dinner trying to engage you in lighter topics. Janus has arranged for a private meal in his quarters, and you are relieved that you do not have to sit through another large, court dinner. King Janus is a bit drunker than you had initially suspected, and he seems momentarily confused by who is talking to him. \n\n"Ah yes, your highness, the Karstian welcome feast is a tradition that goes all the way back to when our people lived in longhouses and still worshipped trees!" You are officially presented to court in the great hall of the keep. Names of various dukes, earls and counts are thrown at you, and you have a hard time keeping track of them all. He is also Lord Treasurer; Lord Anders Fitzroy, Janus' half brother; Lord Martin Coxwell, the Lord High Steward; and Lady Marie Velden, who is rumoured to be the king's mistress. \n\nAt the evening's feast, you placed at the high table, to the left of the King. "But it is getting late. We should do this again another time, and talk more concretely about our future plans. "Yes, let us toast!" Janus beckons over a servant to come and refresh your wine. He then stands, and the rest of the great hall are forced to follow suit. You can hear what sounds like the entire population of Karst outside the door. \n\nSoon you are in your shift and in bed with Janus, the gauzy curtains drawn. You pull up the blankets as high as they'll go, but Janus pulls them down. \n\n"Enough of that," he says, climbing on top of you. His breath reeks of wine and you feel stifled by his weight. It's all you can do not to tremble and cry. \n\nHe's much rougher than you would have liked, and you can't say you enjoyed the experience. He rolls over and falls asleep the moment he's finished. The high lords take their leave as discretely as possible once they've seen what they need to. \n\nYour maids return you to your [[own chamber for the night|queenly duties negative]], for apparently King Janus requested to spend the rest of the night alone.
Villamine frowns. "Oh yes, the bedding ceremony. Barabric, but necessary."\n\n"What do you mean, no one told me about this part," you ask. \n\n"You are going to consummate your marriage, my dear. But here you must do it in front of the high lords. It's most undignified, and you must not show any fear." \n\n[["No, I don't want to."|stop bedding negative]]\n\n[[Bolster your courage.|Proceed bedding negative]]
The king has been drinking honey mead all night, and you can tell he's a little bit drunk at this point in the evening. You decide to try and start a conversation with your future husband. \n\n[["I had no idea how lively a Karstian welcome feast could be. Your emissary in Mervia really did not do it justice."|Janus flattering feast response]]\n\n[["Your Grace has been very welcoming to me. I would like to thank you for your courtesy."|Janus formal feast response]]\n\n[["Tell me Your Majesty, how many cups of this wonderful mead do you think my delicate frame can handle?"|Janus flirtatious feast response]]
That's all there is of Long May She Reign.(So far.) As mentioned earlier, this is a demo of a larger project I'd like to make into a complete game in the future. One that will be filled with political intrigue, backstabbing, conflict, alliances, and maybe even romance (not necessarily with your husband, or even men), depending on what hand you play. Anything can happen!\n\nI hope you enjoyed it!
"I think this arrangement could be quite mutually beneficial. I agree to your terms, Lord Coxwell. Now, if that's all you wanted..?" \n\n"Of course, my queen." The Lord High Steward pulls out your chair and escorts you out of his quarters himself. \n\nYou [[return to your own chambers|temp end]], and hope you haven't made a grievous mistake.
Karza Keep is very much a keep in the old style, made of limestone and very chilly, with none of the conveniences that you're used to at home. Still, your quarters are comfortable enough, and it is certainly not your place to complain. At least not yet. \n\nYour future husband bids you and your retinue adieu for the evening, and promises a busy day tomorrow. You will be [[formally presented to the court|meet the court]], and the traditional welcome feast will follow.
Not even Janus can get by with offering the Mervians such preferential treatment, and you don't have the clout yet to get this passed. It's obvious that council now distrusts your intentions, and even the king seems to trust you less. \n\nOnly Lord Coxwell seems truly happy, for Janus decides to give the Aliat the land. \n\n\nCouncil lasts well into late afternoon, and afterwards you bid your husband good night and [[return to your own chambers.|temp end]]
"Oh, well his majesty did not seem to be expecting you there today..."\n\n[[Insist on your right to attend.|council negative 2]]\n\n[[Decide to tend to your holdings instead.|duchess of letz]]\n\n
With nothing to say to each other, the traditional carriage blessing goes very slowly. The inside is even more impressive, full of richly decorated reliefs and almost dripping with gold leaf. \n
"I'm afraid I must decline your generous offer, Lord Coxwell," you say, trying to choose your words carefully. "I thank you for your concern, but I don't think it's appropriate to be making such backroom deals without figuring out what I can do on my own. I bid you goodnight, sir." \n\nLord Coxwell seems angry that you have refused his offer outright, but he remains polite. He rings for one of his servants to return you to your own quarters. It's not until you are in your own chambers that you feel you can breathe again. \n\nYour maids [[ready you for sleep|temp end]], and you hope you haven't messed up a potentially useful opportunity.
"I'm not sure I read the situation the same way you do, my lord. I don't approve of bribery, and I especially don't agree that I can't figure out my place here on my own. I'm afraid I have to decline. Now, if you don't mind, I am quite tired from the day's events." \n\nLord Coxwell doesn't look especially happy with your refusal, but he remains polite. "Of course, your grace." He rings a bell for a servant, who escorts you out of the Lord High Steward's chambers and back to your own. \n\nYou are [[tucked into bed by your maids|temp end]], and hope you have not made a big mistake.
You have never met your future husband before, or even know that much about him. Your mother showed you a portrait of him once, a man of almost 30 with brown eyes and a reddish bushy beard. The hair on his head, however, is blond. \n\nWhen he greets you within his keep, you discover King Janus is a large man, tall and broad, who would be intimidating if he wasn't so quick to smile. It appears he has trimmed his beard considerably for the occasion. \n\nYou take his offered hand as you descend from your carriage, as propriety would decree, and he kisses your hand. He's not as ugly as you had feared, but you remember the warning your mother gave you many times: "A handsome face can hide a loathsome heart." You hope her words do not ring true in this case. \n\n[["I'm pleased to finally meet you, your Majesty."|bold greeting]]\n\n[[Curtsy, but say nothing.|shy greeting]]\n\n[[Give a *very* low curtsy, in order to effectively show off your assets.|flirty greeting]]
You and Janus spend a rather awkward carriage ride talking about trivial things - the weather, what will be served at the feast later, differences in customs. You don't feel that the king hates you exactly, but you definitely feel like you have missed an opportunity to become more intimate with him. \n\nHowever, the people of Karza seem pleased with your look, for they cheer every time you and Janus stick your heads out of the carriage window and wave. \n\n
When you arrive in council chambers, it's clear that proceedings have already started. It's also clear that no one seems happy that you came, including your husband. You remember Villamine saying something about how Karstian men often don't appreciate women butting in, but it's too late now. \n\nTo their credit, the council doesn't try to physically oust you from the room. They have enough courtesy to let you stay, though you're given a seat at the far end of the table, with their apologies, of course. \n\n"Today we have some pressing matters to attend to regarding free land along the Karza river," Lord Coxwell begins, somewhat awkwardly. "I'm not sure that's such a good idea...I would prefer to keep such valuable land in Karstian hands." \n\n[[Agree with Janus.|council negative Janus]]\n\n[[Agree with Lord Coxwell.|council negative Coxwell]]\n\n[[Insist on Mervian rights.|council negative Mervia]]\n\n[[Try to broker a compromise.|council negative compromise]]
"Well my lord, it has been an eventful day. I must say I am glad that it is almmost over." \n\n"I am glad your hair has been taken out of that ridiculous frippery from before," Janus replies. \n\n[[Be too shocked to say anything.|Janus feast convo shock]]\n\n[["Excuse me?"|Janus feast convo arrogant]]
