,,,,,,,,,,,,Hello.
<<timed 5s>>[[... Hello?|Intro2]]<</timed>>
<<addclass "html" "intro">><<addclass "html" "babyowl">>\
You are a baby owl.
You live in a tall, tall tree in a big, big forest under the bright, bright moon.
You live with your mother, and the two of you are perfectly, perfectly happy.
[[>>|BabyOwl2]]Each night, Mama Owl teaches you many different owl things:
How to hoot. <i>Hoot! Hoot!</i>
How to fly. <i>Woosh! Woosh!</i>
And how to hunt for food. <i>Shhh!</i>
You are a very good learner.
[[Mama Owl|MamaOwl1]] is very proud of you.
[[>>|BabyOwl3]]
<<removeclass "html" "mamaowl">><<addclass "html" "babyowl">>You are now Mama Owl.
Do you want to be [[Mama Owl|MamaOwl2]], or would you rather remain as [[Baby Owl|BabyOwl2]]?
<<addclass "html" "mamaowl">>The big, big forest is scary on dark nights. The moon is hidden, and creepy crawly things come out to play. Witches and ghouls and goblins and squirrels. Mama Owl warns you to stay in your tree on these nights. She wants you to be safe!
“You never know what might want to gobble you up, my dear!” Mama Owl always nags. “We owls may be able to see in the dark, but you are young, and I worry. Please do this for me and stay hidden, my baby, just like the moon.”
[[>>|BabyOwl4]]
You do hide on these nights, but you are not happy about it. Not one bit. You love flying and hunting with your mother. You want to be just like her!
Yet, every dark night, you are left alone in the tree, safe from the creepy crawlies in the dark forest while Mama Owl hunts for food. You sit. And wait. And pout. <i>Hmph!</i>
[[>>|BabyOwl5]]
On one of these dark nights, you sits in your tree, pouting away. Outside, rain falls through the leaves.
<i>Plip! Plop! Plip! Plop!</i>
You are sad that you can’t fly with Mama Owl tonight, but you love to watch the rain! So, you stare out of the hole in your tree with wide eyes.
[[>>|BabyOwl6]]
The rain picks up, a low <i>shhhhhhhhh</i> that grows into a dull roar. A pleasant noise. You settle farther back in the tree, among the twigs and leaves that are your nest, so you don’t get wet.
[[>>|BabyOwl7]]
It's nice.
<<timed 2s>>It’s soothing.
<<next>>It nearly makes you fall asleep.
<<next>>[[>>|BabyOwl8]]<</timed>>
A rustling comes from the branches above. You barely hear it over the rushing rain, but it’s there.
[[>>|BabyOwl9]]You're very awake, now.
[[>>|BabyOwl10]]You scamper forward, peering up.
Beady eyes stare back from one of the branches.
You flinch in surprise, but immediately fluff up indignantly.
<i>Hoot hoot hoot!</i> you cry into the night. Regardless of who or what this [[creature|BennySquirrel1]] is, it’s not allowed near your tree. Mama Owl would certainly not be pleased!
[[>>|BabyOwl11]]
<<removeclass "html" "bennysquirrel">><<addclass "html" "babyowl">>You are now Benny the Squirrel.
Do you want to be [[Benny the Squirrel|BennySquirrel2]], or would you rather remain as [[Baby Owl|BabyOwl10]]?
[[Test Benny + Nix|TestPanel]]
<<removeclass "html" "babyowl">><<addclass "html" "bennysquirrel">>“Go away!” you hoot. The whatever-it-is chitters noisily, scuttling closer on the branch. You back away on instinct, tripping over a spare twig and fluttering to the floor of your home.
[[>>|BabyOwl12]]
The whatever-it-is chitters again, something like a cackle, before turning and disappearing into the night.
The sound of rain takes over again, but now it feels quiet and empty.
[[>>|BabyOwl13]]You creep closer to the hole in the tree, cautious, careful. There’s no sign of whatever that creature was. You realize you don’t really want to know. You turn to settle back into your nest--
[[>>|BabyOwl14]]But wait, what’s that in the distance? You see something in the dark! Something new between the trees.
<i>Twinkling lights! Flying sparks! Little specks that glow and dance! </i>
You can’t look away. “They’re so pretty!” you think. “So very bright without the moon!”
All at once, you decide you must know what’s making those colorful lights.
“Just one look,” you reason. “I’ll be quick, and Mama will never know!”
[[>>|BabyOwl15]]And so, you take flight, following the trail of lights. You are very excited, but a little nervous. Your feathers shiver in the rain as you dodges trees and branches in the dark.
Suddenly, the lights are getting brighter, brighter, <i>brighter!</i> Oh, no! You can’t see! You knock into a stray branch, tumble through the air, and land in a bush with a <i>thump</i> and a <i>crash!</i>
[[>>|BabyOwl16]]
<<removeclass "html" "babyowl">><<addclass "html" "intro">>\
It’s very dark.
The lights are gone.
You can barely see the leaves right in front of your beak. Plus, your wings hurt a little from when you hit the tree! Oh, what trouble you’re in...
You can only hear the <i>plip plop plip plop</i> of the rain, the <i>cheep cheep</i> of crickets, and the <i>rustle rustle</i> of the bushes nearby...
[[>>|BabyOwl17]]<i><b>Wait!</b></i>
That rustling... sounds very close…
You turn left,
then turn right,
then turn left and right again.
You look behind and in front and under the little talons of your feet.
You only see leaves and shadows, but you’re certain...
you can feel it...
something is nearby...
watching you...
[[>>|BabyOwl18]]
<i><b>Mrrrrrrrow!</b></i>
You jump out of the bushes, fluttering and hooting and squawking in surprise.
You land in a heap of feathers in the middle of a muddy clearing and turn toward the awful noise that had frightened you.
[[>>|BabyOwl19]]
A large creature lumbers out after you, eyes bright, claws sharp and glinting in the dank, wet dark. It rumbles low in its chest.
You squawk even louder and shield yourself behind your wings.
You shiver in the cold.
[[>>|BabyOwl20]]
Through the rain and the rumble and the rasp of your feathers in the leaves, a louder rustle sounds.
You’re filled with despair and hunch further into your wings. Maybe if you keep trying to make yourself smaller, you’ll disappear altogether.
[[>>|BabyOwl21]]
Against your better judgment, you peek through your wings long enough to see a tall, dark shadow, bigger even than the rumbly creature getting steadily, glintily closer, emerging from the bushes.
A big, big shadow in the dark, dark forest.
The darkness around you gets closer still.
How do you react?
[[You’re stunned to stillness and silence.|BabyOwl22-1.1]]
[[You barely squeak a meek little hoot.|BabyOwl22-2]]
[[You screech and shout in renewed panic.|BabyOwl22-3.1]]
<<set $surpriseLou to false>>\
After a long moment, the shadow bends down toward the sharp-eyed creature.
“[[Nix|NixCat1]], you naughty thing,” comes a voice that’s surprisingly sharp and bright. It catches you off-guard. “I told you we came out here to practice, and here you are chasing after nothing.”
<i>Mrrrrrrow</i>, the creature grumbles insistently, creeping ever closer to you. Its eyes glow, steady and intelligent.
You shuffle back on instinct, only to trip over a rain-slicked pebble and hoot softly in surprise.
[[>>|BabyOwl22-1.2]]
<<removeclass "html" "nixcat">><<addclass "html" "babyowl">>The shadow seems surprised at the noise you make, stepping backwards just a bit and stooping down... almost gently...
“Hello?” it says, voice surprisingly high and sweet. “Is someone there?”
[[>>|BabyOwl23]]<<set $surpriseLou to true>>
The shadow rears back, tripping on a branch and--
<i>Fizzle! Snap! Pop!</i>
Sparks flash, colorful but too bright and too loud to be pretty.
The creature with the sharp eyes lets out a blood-curdling yowl and streaks off into the trees.
You squeak and hide behind your wings again, wishing you had never left your tree.
“Mama!” you cry, terribly scared and trembling.
[[>>|BabyOwl22-3.2]]You are now Nix the Cat.
Do you want to be [[Nix the Cat|NixCat2]], or would you rather remain as [[Baby Owl|BabyOwl22-1.1]]?
[[Test Benny + Nix|TestPanel]]
<<removeclass "html" "babyowl">><<addclass "html" "nixcat">>The shadow looks up at the noise you make, stepping backwards just a bit and stooping down... almost gently...

[[>>|BabyOwl23]]
<<removeclass "html" "intro">><<addclass "html" "babyowl">>\
A light glows. It’s soft, this time, and doesn’t disappear. You part your wings a little further and look up.
A young woman with a round face and a floppy, pointed hat looks down at you with concern. A little ball of yellow light floats above her hand that glitters with little jeweled rings. You can’t believe your eyes...
The young woman... is a witch.
<<if $surpriseLou is true>> [[>>|BabyOwl24-2]] <<else>> [[>>|BabyOwl24-1.1]] <<endif>>
But then.. you notice a shift in the looming shadow’s stance. It stills, stoops low...
You wait, petrified.
But then...
[[>>|BabyOwl23]]The witch speaks, then, bouncing in a bubbly way that seems more from habit than actual shock. Her hat goes a bit askew. A spider drops from the tip of it on a silken thread.
“Oh, my!” the witch says. “You poor dear! Are you alright? What are you doing out here in the rain?”
You shiver, flinching away from the ball of light and thinking of the angry sparks and snaps from just now. Mama Owl told you stories of witches—evil, ugly hags who curse and eat up little owls who don’t follow rules—so you're still a little scared.
[[>>|BabyOwl25]]
And the creature... Well, now you just feel silly, coming face to face with a fluffy, indifferent-looking cat. It regards you, looking bored, then licks at its paw.
You try not to be offended by that.
You fail.
[[>>|BabyOwl24-1.2]]
“Oh, my!” the witch says. “You poor dear! Are you alright? What are you doing out here in the rain?”
You shiver, glancing warily at the ball of light. Mama Owl had told you stories of witches—evil, ugly hags who curse and eat up little owls who don’t follow rules—so you’re still a little scared.
[[>>|BabyOwl25]]
The witch frowns. She looks at the ball of light in her hand and wiggles her fingers.
The yellow light changes to blue, to red, to orange, to green, to every other color you've ever seen!
Bright specks fall from the witch’s fingertips. Glowing bubbles float down and pop into little fireworks just above your head.
Your eyes go wide. “Wow!” you gasp in awe.
[[>>|BabyOwl26]]The witch smiles, sweet as butterscotch, and crouches down. She takes off her floppy, pointed hat and holds it above your head, blocking the rain that's still falling.
“There now,” she says, “are you feeling better, little one? You must have followed the light of my magic. I was practicing! It’s so fun to practice in the rain!” The witch chuckles, and you find yourself brightening even more.
<<if $surpriseLou is false>>[[>>|BabyOwl27-1]]<<else>>[[>>|BabyOwl27-2]]<<endif>>
But then, the witch looks sad again. “I’m very sorry for scaring you, little one…” she says, then pouts as she looks down at the cat by her feet. “And I am especially sorry for my familiar here doing the same.” She pauses expectantly, then sighs. “Don’t you ignore me, you naughty cat, why don’t you apologize to our little friend--<i>hey!”</i>
The cat scampers off into the trees with barely so much as a pompous chirp and a flick of its tail.
[[>>|BabyOwl28]]
But then, the witch looks sad again. “I’m very sorry for scaring you, little one… I’m not as skilled with magic as I would like to be…” she says, then pouts as she looks over her shoulder, off towards where that sharp-clawed creature had disappeared to. “And I am especially sorry that my familiar scared you, as well.”
[[>>|BabyOwl28]]The witch plants her hands on her hips with a scoff and a shake of her head. “Awful thing,” she murmurs. “He’ll be back. We feed him, after all.”
(That, somehow, doesn’t seem to reassure you.)
[[>>|BabyOwl29]]“But never mind that! I live in a cottage nearby. Let me give you shelter from the storm. It’s the least I can do. Oh, and my partner can make you tea!”
(This, somehow, does seem to reassure you.)
[[>>|BabyOwl30]]You ruffle your wet feathers. You would certainly love to warm up away from the storm… But won’t Mama Owl be worried if you aren’t in your tree when she returns?
What do you do?
[[Agree to go to the witch’s house.|BabyOwl31-1]]
[[Politely decline and ask to be taken home.|BabyOwl31-2.1]]
<<set $wheresMama to false>>The witch smiles, pleased, and holds out her hand. You are just big enough to fit in the center of her palm.
So you hop on, minding the rings that click against your talons.
The two of you set off into the forest, lit brightly by the witch’s orb of light.
[[>>|BabyOwl32]]<<set $wheresMama to true>>The witch smiles, something solemn, and nods like she understands.
“Of course you would want to go back home after all this. Well, allow me to escort you! I’d hate for you to get lost in the forest…” She looks down, sheepish as she tugs on the brim of her hat, and adds in a mumble, “Again…”
[[>>|BabyOwl31-2.2]]
It’s not long before you come upon the witch’s cottage--a quaint little thing made up of polished cherry wood and stone (according to the witch, who is really quite chatty). The flower-lined windows glow warmly behind their stained-glass panes. From the chimney atop the thatched roof, a strangely glittering cloud of magenta smoke filters out into the still-misting air.
Another witch, one with long, dark hair that nearly falls over her eyes, greets you at the door. You are a little wary of her at first, but her smile is soft and she smells like lavender and warm berry tarts, so you find yourself relaxed in no time.
[[>>|BabyOwl33]]
She then holds out her hand. You are just big enough to fit in the center of her palm.
You hop on, minding the rings that click against your talons.
The two of you set off into the forest in the direction you’d come from, lit brightly by the witch’s orb of light. With the light, you are able to see more clearly and easily direct the witch to your tree.
[[>>|BabyOwl31-2.3]]
As you walk, you talk to the witch, who you find is named Lou. She is quite chatty, pointing out different paths through the forest where her friends live--goblins to the south, a clan of ghouls over the hills, a squirrel hoard that settled in the west but migrates rather often, and--
<i>WOOSH!</i>
You and Lou are nearly knocked over as something--well, several somethings--zip through the air just above your heads!
You hoot indignantly after them, whatever they are, and your beak drops open at what you see.
[[>>|BabyOwl31-2.4]]One of the <i>somethings</i> paused in its flight, hovering a few feet off the ground. Lou raised her orb of light, casting a glow over soft features, pink hair falling messily over pointed ears, rough-spun clothing…
...and glowing pink wings.
A <i>[[fairy|MayFairy1]]</i>.
[[>>|BabyOwl31-2.5]]

<<removeclass "html" "babyowl">><<addclass "html" "mayfairy">>The fairy’s eyes widen, almost impossibly so, and calls in a wavering, youthful voice, “So sorry, Lou!”
Lou shakes her head. “All good, May. Not a scratch on us.” She holds you a bit higher, like she can tell how awestruck you are and wants you to have a better look. “Don’t let us keep you. You look busy.”
The fairy nods, worry present in a gnaw of a lip and a flutter of wings, before giving a hasty wave and following after the other fairies in a flash of pink light.
[[>>|BabyOwl31-2.6]]You are left speechless for a moment. You’ve never seen a fairy so close before.
Lou chuckles, setting off again. “May is one of the four guardian fairies in the forest. Must be having a meeting or… or playing tag for a fae festival or something. Did you know...”
And she goes on. She is really quite chatty.
[[>>|BabyOwl31-2.7]]
You reach your tree soon after, and feel an overwhelming sense of relief. With a convenient bit of magic, Lou rises up in the air to set you in your hole in the tree.
“Mama!” you cry, damp wings outspread and ready to embrace--
Nothing. Mama Owl is not here. You instantly deflate, and you feel your heart beat steadily with worry.
[[>>|BabyOwl31-2.8]]“Is something wrong, little one?” Lou asks from outside the tree. “Is your mother not home yet?”
You shake your head. Hop over to look at the stars in the sky, the placement of the moon. Mama Owl should have been back by now. “Nuh-uh, she’s not here…” You try not to sound scared.
You fail.
[[>>|BabyOwl31-2.9]]Lou frowns. “Oh, my dear… I couldn’t leave you alone and shivering in your tree like this… Please come back to the cottage with me. We can wait until the rain stops, then try again. Would that be okay?”
You look around your home, at your nest, at the bark, at the distant trees behind Lou’s pudgy, freckly face.
[[>>|BabyOwl31-2.10]]
What do you do?
[[Go with Lou.|BabyOwl31-2.11]]
[[Stay in your tree.|altbabyowl1]]You hold back a few sniffles and convince yourself that Mama Owl was just caught up hunting. She’ll be back home soon and you will see her before the night ends. You nod, then, hopping back into Lou’s palm.
The two of you set off again, walking deep into the forest, heading north. You can recognize it now, since you have your bearings.
[[>>|BabyOwl32]]Double-click this passage to edit it.Once you enter, you find that the cottage is very warm, indeed! After a flurry of fussing and introductions--during which you learn the witch who found you is named Lou, while her partner is named Violet--you end up sitting comfortably on a plush green couch in front of a brightly lit fireplace. The flames--multicolored--heat a boiling cauldron filled with a bubbling green liquid. Magenta smoke curls along the surface before rising up the chimney.
Lou bundles you in a soft, soft blanket and pats your head.
Violet brings you a sweet-smelling cup of tea and tends to your sore wings with a healing touch of magic.
