The spread of the barrier slows, then stops. But suddenly there are flashes of light behind Jack; Prangley and Rodriguez are there, arms raised, joining their power to hers. Then a dozen more flashes as the whole squad of Grissom Academy biotics work together to form a barrier. It extends outward until the whole street is covered by a shield of brilliant violet light.\n\nThe Alliance soldiers give a cheer, and open fire on the Brute. It collapses under the barrage, dead, and the advance continues. Her students, clustered around her, do the same - all except Rodriguez. \n\nRodriguez falls, dead, a moment too late in bringing up her barrier. \n\nJack and Prangley lock eyes. She sees the shock in his face, knows she needs to keep him moving, before it really sets in. She starts moving at a deliberate pace, like she's training. He recognizes the mneumonic gesture and copies it, moving to mirror her. Rodriguez commands, and the students step closer together, filling in gaps but covering a smaller total area. \n\nMeanwhile the soldiers focus their fire on the Brute blocking the advance. Finally, a soldier with a rocket launcher takes aim and manages to finish the creature off. They're more effective than the marines, whose return fire is largely useless against the Reaper servitors' superior position, but they're also drawing a lot of fire. One of the other students, Michaels, goes down before her eyes.\n\n"Hey!" she shouts. "Remember what we practiced! //Focus fire//, you guys. The Brute's blocking the way - let's take it down!" \n\nShe turns back to the creature, and this time half a dozen other biotic projectiles fly out beside hers. Rodriguez shouts, once again feeling like stronger words are called for, if she only knew quite what. "Come on!" She hustles forward, joining the press of marines pushing their way out of the kill zone. As she passes the Brute, she looks back, grinning, giving the thumbs up. \n\nThe other students are all dead behind her, a trail of red uniforms through the kill zone. I always loved the big space battles that the Mass Effect games reward you with, right at the end of the game! Sovereign's attack on the Citadel, the SR-2's desperate attack on the Collector Base, and (of course) the counterattack on Reaper-occupied Earth - all totally awesome!\n\nHowever, I always thought that Operation Hammer - the huge infantry attack on the Beam at the end of ME3 - wasn't presented in quite as much depth as it deserved. A lot of the resources and allies you gather in ME3 are really about the land battle, and that's how most of Shepard's many friends take part in the war, so it felt like we should get to see some of that. \n\nThis is a fanfic I've written to fill that gap. But every playthrough is different, and those differences are what makes the game Mass Effect. So this is a fanfic that can reflect at least some of the things that are unique about Operation Hammer in //your// game. \n\n[[More.|somenotes2]]\n\n[[Back.|credits]]

The OHFG doesn't do everything and isn't meant to. It's NOT, for instance, a response to the end of the game, neither a defense nor an indictment. It doesn't tie in every little thing in the game I would love to see included - like gosh, I would love to have a bit with elcor infantry if you did that fetch quest. \n\nIt also doesn't really explore anything outside of ME canon. That's just a result of me setting boundaries for the project. There were some things I'd love to have as options in the OHFG that aren't in the game - for example, content for Shepards who are romantically involved with Joker - but to keep the size of the project down I made the call early on to keep it tied to the games as we have them.\n\n(That said, the principle of simplicity cuts both ways - there's nothing to stop you from picking Miranda as the romance in ME2 for your femshep; I didn't see any need to go to extra effort to add that kind of restriction.)\n\n[[Back|credits]]\n\n[[Hack this game!|hackthisgame]]

He sights with care above the husks, finding marauders and cannibals who come out of cover to take a shot, taking them out with one custom-modded round. \n\nHis eyes widen minutely as he sees a ravager come around the corner of a relatively intact building and advance toward the chokepoint; he knows that kind of firepower could put a very quick end to their makeshift defense. \n\n"Incoming," he breathes into the comm, and thumbs a switch on his rifle to change the setting. He deploys a prox mine in the creature's path. \n\n<<if $james is 1>>"Yeah? What've you got, Vakarian?" James asks.<<else>><<if $liara is 1>>"What is it, Garrus?" asks Liara. "What do you see?"<<else>>"Please clarify," EDI replies.<<endif>><<endif>>\n\nThe prox mine goes off. Garrus doesn't answer; he doesn't have a large window. He fires once, twice, three times; his ammo is customized to cut through Reaper armor, and those prox mines don't mess around, but he knows from experience that ravagers are tough. \n\nBut after the fourth solid hit, the ravager stops in its path and falls; a pool of green forms around it, its highly acidic blood. Garrus smiles slightly to see a husk blunder into it and stumble as the corrosive fluid eats away at its legs. \n\n"Oh, nothing you need to worry about," he says. "It's dead now, full of holes. You can thank me later."\n\n<<if $tali is 1>>[[Next.|talisquad]]\n<<else>><<if $kaidan is 1>>[[Next.|kaidansquad]]\n<<else>><<if $ash is 1>>[[Next.|ashsquad]]\n<<else>><<if $javik is 1>>[[Next.|javiksquad]]\n<<else>>[[Next.|theend]]\n\n<<endif>><<endif>><<endif>><<endif>>\n\n<<set $victory to $victory + 1>>

The atmosphere in the observation lounge of the Alliance science vessel SSV //Rosalind Franklin// is strikingly different from the vicious fighting on Earth - but through the windows, the personnel of the Crucible Project are watching a scene just as important to the future of the galaxy unfold. \n\n"This is Admiral Hackett," comes a voice over the loudspeakers. "Operation Hammer is nearing the Beam. It's time to deploy the Crucible." The assembled scientists and engineers watch as the engines on the patchwork space craft built around the Crucible itself fire, moving it toward the Sol relay. \n\nDespite the enormity of their accomplishment in building the thing, the atmosphere is tense. So much effort has led to this moment, and now they are sending their creation into the heart of a battle with so many unknown factors. <<if $rachni is 1>>Even the rachni workers feel the mood; they sit in small groups, chittering softly, subdued.<<endif>>\n\n[[Next.|crucible2]]
An immense object appears in the sky, and with speed that's still surprising even after all the wars many shocks, a Reaper capital ship settles from orbit. A name passes through the ranks, passing from mouth to mouth, frequency to frequency: Harbinger.\n\nAdmiral Anderson's voice crackles over the comm.\n\n"We gotta move! Hammer squads, go go go!" \n\nAnd everybody knows: one way or another, this is it.\n\n[[End.|credits]]

In one corner of the battlefield, a pair of asari commandos advance rapidly towards the cover at the other end of the battlefield. They move through husks and cannibals with flawless grace; one, with clear, sky blue skin, focusing on biotic attacks, the other, with violet skin and a complex dark markings on her face, carefully picking targets with a Disciple shotgun. \n\nThey fight with the effortless synergy of longtime partners. A cannibal draws a bead on the pair and is thrown off-balance by a biotic pull; when it recovers its balance, it looks up directly into the barrel of a Disciple.\n\n[[Next.|samaraclip2]]
