[[View beta notes.]]//Your mother, now known as the Queen Mother Rayne, enters your office.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' I can hardly believe your father is gone. Thirty-five years, he reigned. A shy man, really, but a damn good one.
//The Queen Mother's face appears more solemn.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' His death was so sudden. He didn't even have the chance to train you - to teach you.
//She walks over to your side of the desk and embraces you.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' You have to relenquish everything you once knew and everything you hold dear. The crown is a heavy burden. You are no longer yourself. You are the Sovereign. You are chosen of the gods. You are Queen.
[[I will live up to Father, and I will be great.]]
[[I understand.]]
[[You do drone on, sometimes. I know what I'm doing.]]
(set: $morality = 50)//The Queen Mother smiles happily.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' I know you will, my love. You have a long road ahead. You will stumble. You will fall, but the crown demands that you take it in stride. Never appear nervous. Never let them see you weak. Remember this, and you may yet survive the times to come.
//A knock at the door.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' I suppose it's that time already. I must go and let you attend your first day as Sovereign.
//Teary-eyed, the Queen Mother turns swiftly and exits the room.//
[[Come in.]]
(set: $morality +=1)//The Queen Mother smiles happily.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' I hope so, my love. You have a long road ahead. You will stumble. You will fall, but the crown demands that you take it in stride. Never appear nervous. Never let them see you weak. Remember this, and you may yet survive the times to come.
//A knock at the door.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' I suppose it's that time already. I must go and let you attend your first day as Sovereign.
//Teary-eyed, the Queen Mother turns swiftly and exits the room.//
[[Come in.]]//The Queen Mother is appalled.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' That is absolutely no way for a Queen to speak to their mother. Perhaps the weight of the Crown would do you some good.
//A knock at the door.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' I - I best be off...
//Teary-eyed, the Queen Mother turns swiftly and exits the room.//
[[Come in.]]
(set: $morality -=1)//Assistant Reginald tilts his head in confusion.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' Your Highness. If I may - I am not supposed to sit while in the presence of the royal family.
[[Oh. I see. Then, continue, please.]]
[[I am the Queen, and I demand that you sit.]]
(set: $morality +=1)//Assistant Reginald smiles.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' Each day, I will come to your office and present you with the latest headlines involving the royal family or the most recent bill that requires your signature. You will have to decide how you wish to proceed with these issues.
[[Wonderful! I appreciate the help.]]
[[Indeed.]]
[[Come on, then. Let's get to it, Reg.]] //He blinks.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' Well, yes. We are on a bit of time table, here. Should I come back later?
[[I apologize. Go ahead. |Indeed.]]
[[Yes. Later. Now, leave!|I am your Queen. Do not question my authority.]]
(set: $morality -=1)//Assistant Reginald smiles.//

[[Thank you for understanding my error. New Queen and all. Proceed, please.]]
[[Indeed.]]
[[Come on, then. Let's get to it, Reg.]]
(set: $morality +=1)//Assistant Reginald gulps hard.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' Certainly, your Majesty.
//He sits in the chair opposite you and your desk.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' A news article concerning your brother has recently surfaced and is making front page headlines in all outlets. A photo was taken of him leaving a bar late last night drunk and bloodied. I believe the quote, "Royal Rampage" was used frequently. Crown and Country, the largest outlet that reports on royal happenings, would like to hear a response from the new Queen. I suggest we clear this up as cleanly and swiftly as possible. How do you wish to proceed?
[[I suppose I'd like to make a statement to Crown and Country.]]
[[What do you suggest?]]
[[How dare they slander my brother in such a way!|I won't do it.]]//Assistant Reginald smiles once more.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' Of course, your Highness. So, the agenda for today is rather simple, but unfortunately concerns a sensitive matter.

[[Won't my brother resent me, Reginald?]]//A man in stately uniform appears, shutting the door behind him. He holds a stack of paper before you and bows his head.//

[[Very well.]]

[[Fine. Whatever is best for the Crown.|I suppose I'd like to make a statement to Crown and Country.]]
[[I won't do it.]]//A bead of sweat drips down his brow.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' Your Highness. I implore you to think about this for a moment. This is bad publicity for the Crown.
[[I suppose you're right.|I suppose I'd like to make a statement to Crown and Country.]]
[[I am your Queen. Do not question my authority.]]//Assistant Reginald bows his head and leaves in a hurried pace.//
''The Next Day...''
//Your brother, Alexander, enters your office unnannounced. He waltzes over and sits upon your desk in a casual manner. He places his hands, cloaked in pristine white gloves, upon his lap.//
''Alexander:'' I appreciate you staying quiet about my... incident. However, it only encourages me to move forward with my plan.
[[What are you talking about?]]
[[Plan?]]//He giggles maniacally.//
''Alexander:'' You don't deserve this. You don't deserve any of it. You've proven that in less than 24 hours. I did something despicable, and you - you failed to defend the honor of the Crown. One day as Queen, and you have already failed. Honestly, I'll be doing the country a favor.
[[What? What's going on, Alex?]]//Alexander pulls a blade from his pocket and slashes at your throat. He then places the blade onto your desk. Upon it is an engraving which states, "Property of the Queen Mother."//
''Alexander:'' Mother will be so happy to hear that she will be sentenced to death for the assassination of the Sovereign. Then, I will be King. I will rule, just as I rightfully deserve.

//The Queen Mother approaches.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' May I have a word?
[[Of course, Mother.]]
[[I have no time for this.]]//The Queen Mother sighs.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' Was it really necessary to comment on your brother's recent behavior? Oh, you know Alexander's quite sociable - to a fault, really. Honestly, I believe he is only acting out because of your new position. Perhaps you should assign him a task. Give him something to do so that he has the opportunity to shine.
[[A task? What exactly do you suggest?]]
[[A reasonable idea for a wayward man.]]
[[I refuse to help the little monster after what he pulled.]]//The Queen Mother slaps her hand onto your desk.//

''Queen Mother Rayne:'' The palace will be hosting a gala - a small gathering, truly - for the Duke of Vordenshire. As you know, he also has experienced a great loss in his family recently. I say, as a show of good faith to your brother, let him host. It will give him the chance that he desperately needs right now.

[[Fine. I will give you this chance to redeem yourself.|I'll see you at the gala.]]
[[Absolutely not.|What? What's going on, Alex?]]//Alexander shakes his head.//
''Alexander:'' You truly are vile... It makes this so much easier.
[[Excuse me?|What? What's going on, Alex?]]''The Next Day...''
//Reginald enters your office.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' Good day, your Highness. I have a proposal that needs your attention. The Shrubbery Guild has drafted plans to expand the palace gardens. It's a luxurious schematic that includes the finest and most exotic flora imaginable. However, this extension will require the removal of a few popular shops and restaurants in the Palace District. You should know, moving forward with these plans may label you as a Queen who cares more about her gardens than her people. The choice is yours.
[[I would never put myself before my people! (Deny the guild.)]]
[[Those plans are surely lovely. The gardens will be beautiful! (Sign for the plans.)]]
(set: $morality +=1)You have decided to deny the guild's proposal. In this matter, you have sided with the people, and they will remember that.
''Assistant Reginald:'' Excellent choice, your Highness. Although, I wouldn't want to be in your shoes right now. The Shrubbery Guild is owned and operated by some of the most financially powerful people in the country. They may not take too kindly to you turning your nose up at the schematics they surely paid top dollar for.
[[My decision is final, Reginald.]]
[[Are you mad? Why on earth wouldn't you tell me that before I signed?]]You decided to sign off the Guild's plans. The people will remember this.

//As you stand in your living quarters, alone with your personal dresser, Betty, as she tucks you into the tight, designer gown, a loud commotion stirs just beyond your door. A few moments pass before the Queen Mother races in, accompanied by Reginald.//
//The Queen Mother is red-faced and distraught.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' Oh, it's terrible! Just terrible. How could this happen?
''Assistant Reginald:'' There is an urgent matter you must attend to, your Highness.
[[Mother? Reginald? What has happened?]]//Reginald bites his lip.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' We have a situation. As guests began to arrive, they were escorted into the first floor parlor on the east wing. Unfortunately, they were greeted by--
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' --some mad man painted a message on the wall in red - threatening your life! How could this happen in a castle full of guards at all hours?
''Assistant Reginald:'' The real question is: What do we do now? The local authorities have closed off the premises. No one enters or exits the royal palace until someone is brought to justice.
[[We cannot hold these people hostage!]]
[[Whoever did this will die by my hand. I'm the goddamn Queen.]]
[[Move them to a new waiting area and tell them to remain calm.]]''Assistant Reginald:'' I'm afraid it's a bit more complicated than that, your Highness.
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' The message said you were going to die. Tonight. At that party.
''Assistant Reginald:'' Which means there may be a killer in the crowd. I've posted guards just outside your door. I suggest you and the Queen Mother should stay here until further notice.
[[If you insist, Reginald.]]
[[I'll do as I please.]]
(set: $morality +=1)//The Queen Mother's eyes widen.//

(set: $morality -=1)//A few hours pass. Night falls. Silence.//
//The Queen Mother paces before you as you sit quietly on your sofa.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' How can you be so calm at a time like this? An actual assassin could burst through that door at any moment!
[[Do sit, Mother. There's nothing we can do right now.]]
[[Keep pacing like that and those swollen ankles of yours will burst.]]//Reginald shakes his head.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' Your Highness, we don't have a choice here. This is a delicate matter. Lives are at stake. Most importantly, yours.
[[Fine. Leave. We'll stay put.|If you insist, Reginald.]]
(set: $morality -=1)//The Queen Mother halts and stares you down.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' Damn it, my daughter! There is someone in your very own home who has threatened your life. As far as we know, they still plan to do it. I know, you're still new to this, but by god, you are the most powerful human being on this planet. You are the Queen. How dare you sit idly by while this monster plans his next move!
[[You know what? You're absolutely right.]]
[[And how dare YOU speak to me in that manner.]]
(set: $morality +=1)//The Queen Mother gasps!//
''High Queen Rayne:'' Ruling has given you such a filthy tongue. I suppose I should have expected that...
[[Just sit.|Do sit, Mother. There's nothing we can do right now.]]
(set: $morality -=1)//The Queen Mother sits next to you.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' Good. Now, ask yourself: What would a Queen do?
[[I'll march downstairs and confront him or her face-to-face.]]
[[A true Queen would get someone else to do it for her.]]
//The Queen Mother smiles.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' For the very first time, I look in your eyes and see a true leader. A Queen. I couldn't be prouder! I'll deal with the guards. You get down to that party and make this beast fear you.
[[Right!]]//The Queen Mother rolls her eyes.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' Oh, for god's sake. Do whatever you bloody well please.
[[Oh?|Right!]]
(set: $morality -=1)The Queen Mother leaves the room before telling you anything about her plan. She immediately makes a scene, holding her stomach and complaining of nausea. The guards, as planned, surround her, and accompany her to the on-site medical room. This diversion gives you the perfect opportunity to escape.
Moments later, you find yourself in the small parlor that overlooks entrance hall of the palace. The room is filled with worried guests bustling about. Meanwhile, your brother, Alexander, climbes up the first level of stairs, then turns to address his captive audience.
''Alexander:'' Attention! I'd like to thank you all for coming, and I do apologize for our current status. As host of this little soiree, I say we make the best of what we have. Let us bring this party to the entrance hall.
Guests immediately speak up. All of them address the situation of there being a would-be assassin amongst them. No one is in the mood to party.
What will you do?
[[Look around.]]
[[Confront your brother directly.]]//You glance around the room. There is nothing suspicious of note... at first. You soon realize that your assistant, Reginald, is alone in the corner. He pats his head with a cloth to clear sweat from his brow. He appears quite nervous.//
What will you do?
[[Wait.]]
[[Check on Reginald.]]
[[Talk to Alexander.]]You charged your way back toward the stairwell, but are quickly taken by a group of hooded figures, all of which have the image of a shrub on their robe. Swiftly and eloquently, they drag you to another room.
It is dark. None of the figures make a sound. You hear a familiar laughter before the sensation of immense pressure fills your gut. Only when you feel warm drips of fluid down your thighs do you realize what has happened. Unfortunately, it is far too late.
You failed as Monarch. Why don't you [[start over|Start Page]] and steer clear of such foolish decisions next time?//You decide to wait and let events unfold. Your brother, Alexander, continues speaking to the crowd, but they don't seem to care. Reginald, still nervous, walks toward the stairs. He whispers something to Alexander, then proceeds to the second floor. He immediately spots you in the parlor and races over.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' Your Highness! What on earth are you doing out of your quarters?
[[Why are you so nervous?]]
[[That is none of your concern.]]You walk over to the railing and wave to Reginald. Still nervous, he dutifully comes to your call, but not before whispering something to Alexander. He then proceeds to the second floor.
''Assistant Reginald:'' Your Highness! What on earth are you doing out of your quarters?
[[Why are you so nervous?]]
(set: $morality +=1)//Reginald's eyes widen.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' There's just - just so much happening this evening. Still trying to process it all, your Highness.
[[You're not telling me something.]]

''Assistant Reginald:'' I'm only looking out for your well being.

(set: $morality -=1)(if: $plans is false)[//Reginald gulps hard.//

[[No. If you're going to make a move, do it now.]]
[[Fair enough. Let us go.]]//Reginald scratches his head.//
''Assistant Reginald:'' All I know is that it is someone close to you. Do you have any idea who - in this very palace - may want you... dead?
Think about everything you have experienced so far. Who do you think is behind all of this?

''You begin:'' This evening, a member of my own house attempted to have me killed. Right here in the public eye. He assumed he could undermine my authority in my own palace and in front of my own people. My brother, Alexander, wanted to make a statement.

''You continue:'' He believes I am unfit to rule. Yet, here he sits in my custody. After the events that Alexander set into motion this night, his future rests in the palm of my hand. [[Alexander will be banished from the capitol. (banish him)]]The next day, the gallows are set up in the city square, just outside the palace grounds. The whole city stands in attendance as an ex-member of the royal family, Alexander, prepares to meet his fate.
You and the Queen Mother stand side-by-side before the broken man as the noose is wrapped around his neck.
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' How could you do this? How could you do this to your own flesh and blood? You were so priviledged. You had everything. Obviously, it was not enough. I never thought I'd see my own son at the gallows.
[[We're ready, executioner (watch Alexander die)]]
[[Wait. I'll pull the lever myself... (kill Alexander)]]
(set: $morality -=3)The next day, Alexander is sent to the most dreadful prison in the country: The Dead Square. It is a fortress built atop a rocky island. The nearby seas are prone to violent storms. No one has ever escaped and lived to tell the tale.
The Queen Mother is happy to know that you spared his life. Although she realizes that he is a threat, Alexander will always be her son.
You have survived the trials and tribulations of a MONARCH.
[[Final stats.]]The next day, Alexander is forcibly banished from the country. He is taken by carriage to the distant south, and dropped off in a small market village somewhere in the desert. He still holds nothing but hatred for you, and just may come back to finally take his vengeance upon your life.
The Queen Mother is happy to know that you spared his life. Although she realizes that he is a threat, Alexander will always be her son.
You have survived the trials and tribulations of a MONARCH.
[[Final stats.]]
(set: $morality +=3)The lever is pulled, and your brother dies before your very eyes. The crowd roars for you. As Queen, you have proven yourself to be the ruler this country deserves. No one will stand before you, not even your kin.
The Queen Mother sobs relentlessly. She grabs onto her son's dangling body and cries out for him. The nearby guards are forced to pull her away. Although she agrees that her son had to die, she will never look at her daughter the same way again.
You've survived the trials and tribulations of a MONARCH.
[[Final stats.]]You pull the lever, and your brother falls. Not only are you the first Queen in history to execute someone by your own hand, you chose to do it to your own flesh and blood.
The Queen Mother faints and is immediately rushed back to the palace. Seeing her children so bloodthirsty to kill one another was too much to bear. Later, a formal announcement comes from you, the Queen. You explain to the public that the Queen Mother has passed away due to sudden heart attack.
Papers release the following day calling you the "coldest" Queen in history. Two of your closest family members died the very same day, and you barely shed a tear.
You have survived the trials and tribulations of being a MONARCH.
(set: $morality -=3)
[[Final stats.]](if: $morality >50)[You have proven yourself to be a strong and valiant Queen. You would stand against your own brother to save your people and your Crown. You have set a fierce standard for your reign. An age of prosperity and hope will surely bless this country.]\
(else:)[You have proven yourself to be a ruthless Queen to be feared by all. You have set a standard for your reign and for the future of the Crown. None shall stand before the Queen in this new age of oppression and absolute rule.]
(if: $publico >50)[The public praises your leadership. Your choices, whether good or bad, have earned you their trust.]
(else:)[The public despises your leadership. Your choices, whether good or bad, have bred distrust. You may have an uprising on your hands.]
[[Next.]]A yelp.
A thud.
A mountain of screams.
The crowd cannot contain itself seeing the bloody heap of Reginald on the floor.
Before you can react, piercing, cold steel penetrates you from behind. You glance behind you to get a look at your killer, but your vision has begun to fade. As you fall to the floor, all you know for certain is one thing: Reginald was innocent.
You failed as Monarch. Why don't you [[start over|Start Page]] and steer clear of such foolish decisions next time?//The Queen Mother shakes her head.//
''Queen Mother Rayne:'' How can you possibly keep up that disgusting attitude at a time like this? Nevermind. Don't answer that.
[[I'm listening...|You know what? You're absolutely right.]]

[[Back. |Start Page]] Not a day has passed since your brother's sentencing. You sit alone in your office when...
//A knock at the door.//
//A man in white is let in by your guard.//
''Doctor Livingstone:'' The autopsy on your father's body has revealed some rather troubling news. Small traces of nightshade was found in his system. Small, but just enough to be lethal. My colleagues and I believe he was subject to regular poisoning in small doses. Now, as far as we know, your brother was no expert on herbology. As sick as he was, we don't believe he was responsible. However, this means you may still have a killer lurking about this castle.

[[I just wanted to check on you.]]''Alexander:'' You? Care? That's... unexpected. What do you want?
[[I want nothing except for my brother to stay with us during this troublesome time.]]''Alexander:'' Why do you care all of the sudden?
[[I love you. And chances are, the full royal family is the target. I don't want you out here, Alexander. Come back to the suite with me.]]''Alexander:'' Is that really what you want?
[[Yes.]]Alexander appears surprised - even a tear falls from his cheek.
You take your brother's hand and make your way upstairs.
The night moves on and nothing of note occurs.
The next morning, the authorities enter the palace and find no evidence pinning any particular person. For the next few weeks, security is hightened, but nothing ever comes of it.
You and Alexander seem closer than ever. The man, himself, seems happier than ever.
Whether he was truly responsible for the events of that night, you'll never know. All you care about is that your family is together and closer than ever.
