<html>\n<img src="http://slissrv01.iowa.uiowa.edu/~hmkane/my_face.jpg">\n</html>\n\nI'm a library and information science student at the University of Iowa. I also work at the University's main library, and part of my job is patrolling the stacks looking for materials which need to be hard-bound. I'm pretty good at finding things, and even though it's not really my job, sometimes people approach me in the stacks asking where to find something. \n\nThe Library itself has these handy-dandy floor plans which are pretty helpful, but my copy is heavily annotated so I can get exactly where I need to go as soon as possible. Given how often people come up to me asking for help, I figured I could share some of my wisdom. \n\n[[Back it up|Start2]]

"Can You Help Me Find...?"
If you've pulled up a book and its location starts with numbers, you've come to the right page. Chances are your item is classified according to the <html><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dewey_Decimal_Classification" style="color:#FFFF33"> Dewey Decimal System</a></html>. You've probably heard of it. \n\nYou probably haven't heard of the Swank Classification System, though. Swank is used for state, county, and municipal documents, so this is going to be local government stuff. \n\nBoth the Dewey and Swank gov info is housed on the [[Fifth Floor]] in the northwest corner of the building. \n\n[[My call number starts with...]]\n[[Start over|Start2]]\n
Collections on the Third Floor include [[Journals|Periodicals]] -- both current (unbound) and bound issues -- [[Theses]] and Dissertations; [[Government Information (SuDocs)|Government Info]]; the Iowa Women's Archives; the [[Maps]] Collection; [[Special Collections]], and University Archives. If your call number starts with GOV, look no father! (Okay, a little farther.)\n\nAt the Main Library, government info comes in two main types: \n\n1. [[Those which start with letters|Second Floor]]\n2. [[Those which start with numbers|Dewey]]\n\nThere's another weird type called [[SuDocs|Third Floor]]. These call numbers will start with a letter and often have colons, slashes and dashes which distinguish them from Dewey numbers (e.g. EP 1.23:600/R-98-23).
