You slowly take in a deep breath organizing your thoughts after a stressful day. You’ve given in to your comfortable bed for the night and start to scroll through your instagram feed when you come across a picture of your best friend. You smile for a second but it almost immediately goes away. Suddenly you realize your best friend hasn’t talked to you in weeks. A slight discomfort boils inside your chest because you and your friend normally talk all the time. You try and think about the last time you’ve actually hung out with them, but can’t think of an exact day.

It takes them a while to reply again, but they begin telling you that they’ve been going through some things that no one knows. Encouraging your natural curiosity you ask them what they’ve been going through which gets them uneasy. You guys end up having a deep conversation. They come out saying they’ve been diagnosed with depression which shocks you entirely. They’ve always been an energetic charismatic person walking through the halls of the school. You don’t really know how you feel about it since they didn’t tell you right away. I mean, you guys tell each other everything

After a long night of deep conversations with your friend you felt good and infact even closer to them than you were before. Even though you still didn’t know how you felt about it still you tried to keep an open mind. The next day you see them walking into the counselor's office for the first time. Has this been where they’ve been going instead of school? You try to catch up with them but they just seemed to ignore you. You wanted them to stop keeping secrets from you. They need to learn they can trust you, which irritates you that they can’t even though you’ve known each other since you were three years old.

You decide to text them on instinct asking them how they’re doing. They don’t text back until an hour later with just a simple “Hi” which gets you a little confused. You keep texting them until you’re fed up with the one message replies and ask what’s wrong. It takes them a while to answer but they finally reply saying they’re fine and nothing’s wrong.

Ever since your friend hasn't been at school you've hung around a new group of people. Homecoming is coming up and your friends decided to go. The next day you get invited to a big after game party on the same day you planned to study with your friend. You try to explain to them that you can't but they want you to come anyway and ditch your friend. You can always plan another study hour with them. Plus they are the friends you've been hanging around with lately. However you've been looking forward to spending time with your friend.

You come to a conclusion and take them to the party. They seemed to be excited when you asked them to come with you which gave you a bit of hope. They were a little nervous going into the crowd that has been mocking them but you told them they would be fine because there’s going to be a bunch of people there. You drive to the party with them in the passenger seat and you both gaze into the oversized house towering over the both of you. Once you guys are in you head over to the food and immediately people start whispering about you. Out of the corner of your eye you see someone lean over of whisper to the person next to them. Just then you have a whole bunch of people from your school crowd around your friend yelling random things like “hey emo!” “Ew who invited the freak!” Instantly they go over to you telling you they want to leave.

You try to focus and listen but all you hear is faded words almost like your friend is rambling. You tell them to repeat themselves but you still aren’t able to hear them properly. You can tell they’re upset and going off about something but you don’t know specifically. People keep bumping into you and trying to talk to you but you push them away. Outside it seems like it would be quieter but you don’t feel that safe outside at night in this neighborhood.

The next few days go by and you guys haven’t been talking a lot. You’ve picked up study guides from your teachers a few days ago so you could get an overview of what to study. It was a bit annoying since almost every teacher asked how your friend was doing, mainly because they haven’t been able to be in school for certain things no one will tell you about. You walk over to the school library and head into the study room you guys picked for that day. You text them saying that you were already in the room but they don’t answer. Half an hour goes by and they still haven’t shown up which makes you question if they’re even coming.

You let the phone ring a bit more but it immediately goes to voicemail, which irritates you. You begin to realize that they’ve been irritating you a lot lately and basically popping in and out of your life. You hang up the phone with out leaving a voicemail because they didn’t seem to want to talk to you.

Everywhere around you there’s laughter, music and food. The party was better than you thought it would turn out to be, which is surprising since you just started hanging out with your recent friends. You don’t feel any guilt about missing out on study hour because your friend insisted you have fun at the party. You’ve had more than one drink causing you to stumble around hysterically with someone from a different school. They seem to be really into you but you don’t really know if you like it or not. Just then you feel slight buzzing in your back pocket and it takes a while to realize it’s your phone ringing. You fumble your fingers around to grab your phone and see your friend’s blurry name written across the screen.
