<font face="courier new"> Between 1845 and 1850 Ireland was plagued by a potato blight known as the [[Great Famine|http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/victorians/famine_01.shtml]]. The blight and the British government’s decisions to provide minimal support for the Irish people led to stravation, disease, and death. Around 1.5 million people immigrated to the United States between 1845 and 1857 in search of a new life.
County Tipperary was particularly devastated by the effects of the Famine which led James Feeley and Sarah Liberty to immigrate to Baltimore, Maryland.

<font face="courier new"> You were born in County Tipperary in 1826 to a family of poor Catholic peasants. In 1845 your county is devastated by the failure of the potato blight and mass starvation ensues. Without the potato crop you cannot pay your rent and face eviction from your property. The small amount of land that your family survived on is forcefully taken from you.
You have no prospects in Ireland and decide to move to the United States in the hope of a better life. You board a ship named the Margaret Hugg and arrive in Baltimore on May 22nd 1847.
Your first challenge as am immigrant in Baltimore is to find a steady place of [[Employment]]. </font>
<font face="courier new"> Sarah Liberty was born in Tipperary, Ireland in 1835. Tipperary like most of Ireland was based around agriculture and your family have based their life on the land. However, in 1845 the potato crop fails and you are faced by a diaster.
Many irish men and women are starving to death and your family must emigrate to survive. Your Father decides to bring your family to the United States. You move with your father, sister, and brother to Baltimore Cityand your first challenge is to find [[Employment.]]</font>
Dear Father,
I know it has been a long time since I wrote you last but life has been busy in the new world. I took a job on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The pay is good at $10 dollars a month and I have enough to eat meat three times a week!
The work is bone crunching as we are often using shovels and picks to break rocks or digging deep ditches. Many men have caught illnesses and plagues. I hear rumours of a mass grave of Irish men along the canal.
I am looking at the two local [[Churches]] to see which one I want to join. I will write to you again soon.
Yours faithfully and lovingly,
James Feeley
Dear Father,
I hope this letter finds you well.
I have gained employment on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. They said I have not got enough skills to qualify as a blacksmith or boilermaker but I can work as a manuel labourer. The railroad pays better than the canal. I make $15 dollars a month while my friends on the canal make $10. The money lets me eat plenty of meat and rent a nice house.
The work is often dangerous and many good men have been injured along the way. We get free whiskey along the road to numb the pain but it often makes the boys from County Cork rowdy.
I have heard of two local [[Churches]] that I may join if the priests are good.
faithfully,
James Feeley
Dearest Uncle,
I hope this letter finds you well!
I miss you and I hope the beautiful fields of Ireland are recovering from the Famine. I have recently gained employment as a domestic servant. I maintain the house for a Protestant family on Gay Street. Finding employment was a challenge because I was constantly faced with advertisements that stated [[No Irish Need Apply|https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5SiLTPx9jM /]] 'Protestant Only' or 'American Only.' The wealthy Americans don't seem to trust us and display an upon displeasure against our Catholic background.
I care for their children and I clean their house but I often feel an unwanted stranger in the house. I hope to find some inspiration by joining a [[Church.]]
My Eternal love to you Uncle.
Sarah LibertyMy Dearest Uncle,
I have recently obtained a job in a linen factory creating quilts. The quilt industry in Baltimore is famous in the United States. We work a hard and long day on the factory but we have more job security than the women in the domestic services. I saw many 'No Irish Need Apply' signs placed against maids, housekeepers and nurses. I hope to gain some money from this job and find a nice [[Church.]].
Love,
Sarah LibertyDear Loving Father,
I have arrived in the United States and I have settled in the city of Baltimore. I am in good health thanks be to god! There are many opportunites for Irish lads here despite my lack of skills. They say employement can be found at the [[C&O Canal]] or [[B&O Railroad]]. Both have plenty of Irishmen in their employ! So i will apply for a job in one of those locations.
I remain your affectionate son,
James Feeley
My Darling Uncle,
Living in Baltimore city is an adventure that provides new challenges everyday. Since your last letter I have been actively looking for employment. Opportunites for women are much more limited here than they are for men. The men work on the railroad and the canal but the women can only gain employment in the [[Domestic Service]] or [[Factory Work]].
Yours faithfully and lovingly,
Sarah Liberty
<font face="courier new"> The church was the heart of Irish life in every major city in America. Maryland had long been the center of [[Catholicism in the United States|http://www.tenement.org/encyclopedia/irish_catholic.htm]]. John Carroll, an Irishman, founded the first archdiocese of the United States in Maryland in 1789.
Irish people supported their churches and through their donations the church underwent massive growth. In return, the church built schools and hospitals that would provide an education and health care for Irish people. Additionally, Irish groups like the Land League and Ancient Order of Hibernians were founded in churches and priests actively participated. The two most famous Irish churches in Baltimore were during the 19th century were [[St Peter the Apostle]] and [[St Patrick's]]. </font>

Dear Father,
I recently decided to join St Peter the Apostle Church which is known as “Mother Church of West Baltimore.” They say the cornerstone was laid in May 1843. I am always surrounded by Irish men as the church is full of railroad workers but we do have a few coloured people.
Father McClogan is a hell fire Irish nationalist and wholeheartedly supported Daniel O'Connell. He suggests that we raise money for Irish people back home and support the indepdenece movement. The good priest schools for both the boys and girls of the railroad to gain an education. He has persauded some of us to become involved in the cause of Irish [[Nationalism]].
Yours Faithfully,
James Feeley

Dear Father,
I hope the lord finds you well!
I recently joined St Patricks church under the leadership of an excellent priest named James Dolan. The church is filled every week with Irish men and Father Dolan is known as the "Apostle of the point." The priest has some spirit as he is always actively fighting for the church and the orphans. Some say that during the famine he was at the docks helping sick and dying Irishmen.
He wants us to get involved in openning an orphanage for the sons of Irish people who died on the boat. We are going to try to open an [[Orphan School]] for the young boys and girls soon.
Yours Faithfully,
James Feeley
<font face="courier new">Irish areas of Baltimore were known for their commitment to the cause of the motherland. Fr. McClogan was often the host of Irish nationalists and Irish politicians, like Charles Stewart Parnell and Michael Davitt, when they visited the city. Furthermore, McClogan encouraged many Irishmen to join the Land League and attended many St Patricks Day events. During the Fenian invasion of Canada in 1866 the Irish of Baltimore sent two regiments to help the Fenian Irishmen and sold Fenian Bonds for $500 dollars in local newspapers. </font>
[[Join Hibernian Society]]
[[Join Fenian Movement]]Dear Father,
The great Fr. Dolan has enlisted many Irishmen to help provide for the Manual Labor School. The School provides aid to Baltimores orphan population. Most of these children the sons and duaghters of Erin and their parents have died of Cholera.
I help Fr. Dolan maintain the house and we are encouraged to donate money whenever possible to ensure that the school survives. The story of Fr Dolans committment to the Irish poor will compel generations of Irishmen to supply the school with money and labour.
May the Lord Bless you!
James Feeley
[[Anti-Irish Feeling]]Dear Father,
You will be proud to know that your son has joined the Fenian Brotherhood!I am following in the footsteps of men like John O'Mahony and Michael Doheny in the hopes of freeing our great nations from the hands of British tyrants.
We are planning to sell Fenian Bonds that would raise money for the Irish Republic to local Irishmen. These Bonds would be repayable once the Republic is achieved. We hope to be successful and sell $500 Bonds through the nation. Additionally, I hear plans of an invasion of Canada in the future.
Yours Faithfully,
James Feeley
[[Anti-Irish Feeling]]Dearest Father,
I have joined the Hibernian Society of Baltimore!
The society has been in the city since 1803 and in 1823 John Oliver bequeathed $20,000 to the Society for the purpose of establishing a free school in Baltimore. The school has helped many Irish children by providing them with skills and education. At least one of the childs parents must be Irish to attend the school but if the numbers ever get too low we allow non-irish families to enroll their children.
We host a magnificant ball every year on St Patricks Day to remember our heritage and promote Irish culture. Additionally, we have been able to help many newly arrived immigrants with their problems. It is great to be part of a society that helps the Irish in Baltimore.
Yours Faithfully,
James Feeley

[[Send Money to Ireland]]Dear Father,
I have raised some money from my job and it is being sent home to you to provide for the land and family. It is not a lot but it is all that I can spare at the moment. Tell everyone at home that I wish them well and I miss the shores of the isle every day.
May God Bless You Always.

[[Anti-Irish Feeling]]<font face="courier new"> The church was the heart of Irish life in every major city in America. Maryland had long been the center of [[Catholicism in the United States|http://www.tenement.org/encyclopedia/irish_catholic.htm]]. An Irishman named John Carroll founded the first archdiocese of the United States in Maryland in 1789.
Irish women were the life-blood of the church. They donated money, organized societies, and handled the day-to-day operations of the church. The church used these donations to build schools which supported Irish families by providing them with an education. Additionally, Irish groups like the Land League and Ancient Order of Hibernians were founded in churches and priests actively particpated.
Baltimore had two major Irish Catholic Churches during the 19th century known as [[St Peter the Apostle Church]] and [[St Patricks Church.]]. The Irish dominated both churches and both priests were proud Irish men. </font>

Dearest Uncle,
I recently joined St Patricks church under the leadership of an excellent priest named James Dolan. Father believes Father Dolan is a great man! The church is filled every week with Irish men and Father Dolan is known as the "Apostle of the point." The priest has some spirit as he is always actively fighting for the church and the orphans. Some say that during the famine he sat at the docks of Baltimore helping poor Irish men and women who were sick from the coffin ships.
He wants us to get involved in openning an orphanage for the sons of Irish people who died on the boat. We are going to try to open an [[Orphan School.]] for the young boys and girls soon.
Loving Wishes,

Dear Uncle,
Our family have recently decided to join St Peter the Apostle Church which is known as “Mother Church of West Baltimore.” They say the cornerstone was laid in May 1843. My father and I think St Peters is the perfect choice because it has a strong Irish community and the priest is excellent. Father McClogan is a hell fire Irish nationalist and he wholeheartedly supported Daniel O'Connell. The good priest schools for both the boys and girls of the railroad to gain an education. He suggests that we [[Send Money to Ireland.]] to provide relief and support attempts at freedom.
Yours Faithfully,
Sarah LibertyDearest Uncle,
The great Fr. Dolan has enlisted many Irishmen and women to help provide for the Manual Labor School. The School provides aid to Baltimores orphan population. Most of these children the sons and duaghters of Erin and their parents have died of Cholera.
I help Fr. Dolan each week by providing support around the house and he encourages us to donate some money to maintain the school whenever it is possible. The story of Fr Dolans committment to the Irish poor will compel generations of Irishmen to supply the school with money and labour.
Your Loving Niece,
Sarah Liberty
[[Anti-Irish Prejudice]]Dear Uncle,
I have raised some money from my job and it is being sent home to aid the movement in Ireland. As a lady I want to support the Irish people in whatever way I can. I hear that the Fenians are gaining support around the country. They are planning a big campaign soon. The Irish in Baltimore demonstrate their loyality by buying Fenian Bonds and some have suggested they are willing to fight for the cause if it is nessacary.
May God Bless You Always.

Dear Father,
I hope you are doing well! I haven't heard from you in some time.
The Irish community of Baltimore has come under a lot of problems lately. The Nativists and the Know-Nothing Party have been giving us a hard time because they are afraid that good Irish men can work harder than them. The blood tubs, a nativist gang, have been attacking Irish immigrants in the streets in order to get us to stop voting democrat. Additionally, many of the women have faced 'No Irish Need Apply' in the domestic service. The advertisments are all over the Baltimore Sun.
It has made our community stronger though. The Know-Nothings attempted to burn down St Peters Church but we surrounded the church and told them that we would fight them to death in need be. Dear Uncle,
I have the most excellent and amazing news! I have wed a strapping young Irish lad named James Feeley. He is from Tipperary, not far from home. He moved to Baltimore in 1847 during the darkest period of the Famine. He gained employment on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad as a laborer and has proven himself as a great and useful employee. Father McClogan from St Peters Church married us in a beautiful ceremony. We are hoping to rent a house in [[Lemmon St]] or [[S Arrlington Ave]] soon.
James threw a handful of coins into the air during the ceremony for good luck! May god bless our marriage.
Loving Wishes,

I am happy to report the news that I have wed a young Irish lass from Tipperary. Her name is Sarah Liberty, now Sarah Feeley. <font face="courier new">On April 19, 1861, a few days after the surrender of Fort Sumter, The 6th Massachusetts Infantry arrived at the President Street Station in Baltimore and were met by an unruly crowd. The crowd blocked the tracks of the train with timber and anchors. As the soldiers disembarked they heard howls and jeers from the crowd and chants of "Jefferson Davis". The crowd attacked the soldiers with stones and someone fired a shot.
Officers order the troops to fire into the crowd in order to protect themselves. Rioters, soldiers, and innocent bystanders died in the chaos of the riot and many men were arrested. Many Irish men were present during the riot and became actively involved by choosing to <<choice "Join the Mob">>,<<choice "Help Union Soldiers">> or they choose to <<choice "Stay At Home">>.</font>
Dear Father,
Union soldiers came into our city armed and ready to turn their arms against our brothers. A mob surrounded the soldiers as they arrived in the train station and met them with disdain. I joined the crowd as we made our loyalty to Jefferson Davis and the right of the States known.
The soldiers quickly turned on the crowd and began firing on us. Many men were killed or arrested. I must decide if I should [[Join the Confederate Army]]

Dear Father,
A riot broke out in Pratt Street on April 19th 1861. Union troops that marched through the city were attacked by pro-Confederacy members of the community. The threw stones and other objects at the soldiers and yelled slanderous remarks about the Union. The crowd chanted for Jerrson Davis as the soldiers walked passed at double-pace.
The poor soldiers had no choice but to fire back at the angry mob and the chaos that ensued led to many men getting killed or injured. I aided the Union soldiers in getting to Camden station. Now I must decide if I should [[Join the Union Army]] or [[Continue Working.]]
Faithfully,
James FeeleyDear Father,
I witnessed a major riot in the city recently. The United States is in danger of falling apart. Virginia and other states have seceeded and war seems likely to break out. Lincolns men marched through Baltimore April 19 1861 and they were met with a mob of secessionist supporters. Many of the secessionists were Irishmen including a man named Davis, who was killed by Union soldiers. The mob threw stones and fired shots at the soldiers and the soldiers angered by their hostile reception in the city fired back.
I am loyal to the Union but I am also a tried and true democrat so my loyalities were divided. I decided to sit out the riots and continue working on the railroad. The war is coming and I have the opportunity to [[Join the Confederate Army]] ,[[Join the Union Army]] or to [[Continue Working.]]
Your loving son.

Dear Father,
I have enlisted in the Confederate army to fight against the Union. The Republican party under Lincoln is no friend to the Irishman. We fight for the democrats. A large section of Baltimore City is pro-Confederacy and they have been suppressed by Lincolns men and thrown in Fort McHenry. The Confederacy will surely be led to victory by Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee!
Glory to the cause!
Faithfully your son,
James Feeley
[[Outcome of the War.]]
Dear Father,
I joined the Union Army today to fight for our adopted home. The Confederates threaten the peace of the nation and the British are supporting them. Irishmen from throughout the country have enlisted to take down the Confederate army.
General Corcoran visited the city and encouraged all members of the Irish race to fight for the Union! We know that our cause it righteous and we hope to finish the Confederates off soon.
Glory to the Union!
Faithfully,
James Feeley

Dear Father,
We have moved into a beautiful two-floor-and-attic house in South Baltimore. It is in a proud Irish community and I am surrounded by good friends like Cornelius McLaughlin and Dennis McFadden. The floor is wooden! A mighty improvement on the mud floored, one room house that we had back home. I hope that one day we can provide you with the money to move over with us!
It is big enough for Sarah, myself and the children to grow up as a family and the children are never far from the local schools. Sarah maintains the home well and I am right beside the railroad so after a hard days work I can set my aching body on a seat and relax.
Your loving son,
James Feeley
[[Pratt Street Riots]]Dear Father,
We have moved into a beautiful main street house in South Baltimore. It is in a proud Irish community and I am surrounded by good friends and Sarahs family. The floor is wooden! A mighty improvement on the mud floored, one room house that we had back home. I hope that one day we can provide you with the money to move over with us!
The house is much bigger than the one in Lemmon Street and the children will have room to grow. The local school is not far away and the children will be able to recieve an education while I am at work. I have hopes that they will take a skilled job on the railroad when they are old. Sarah maintains the home well and I am right beside the railroad so after a hard days work I can set my aching body on a seat and relax.
Your loving son,

[[Children]]Dear Uncle,
I hope you are doing well on this great day!
Life in Baltimore is magificant. Our family is growing and the children are attending the local school. The Church has set up a school for boys and one for girls. I have decided to continue to work to provide additional income for the family. We have money to spare but I do wish I had more time to spend helping the children learn their letters.
Your Loving Niece,
Sarah Feeley
[[Pratt Street Riots.]]Dear Uncle,
I am proud to inform you that James and I have had our first child! Her name is Mary and she was baptised in St Peters Church.
Our family is growing and we hope to have many more children walk to floors of our new home. May God Bless our Family. I must now choose to [[Continue Working]]
or [[Focus on duties as wife]].
Love and happiness!
Sarah Feeley
Dear Uncle,
I have decided to leave my job and focus on my duties to my children and James. James is working on the Railroad and providing for the family but my loss of income has been hard on the family.
The children Mary and Michael are doing great and they are going to attend St Peters School. They have a school for the boys and another for the girls. I will help tutor them when they return home by helping them with their writing and reading. Education is important for helping the younger generation move up the ladder in the United States.
I hope you will one day join us in the United States.
Love Always,
Sarah Feeley
[[Pratt Street Riots.]]Dear Father,
I have decided to continue working in Baltimore and not get involved in the war. Many Irishmen have continued working on the railroad and the docks instead of enlisting.
I am aware that the United States is my new home and it has treated me well but I do not wish to fight against the democratic party or the good people of the South. The Democratic party are more of a friend to Irishmen than the party of Lincoln but General Corcoran stated that the Confederacy has the support of Great Britain and I cannot aid a cause that is supported by the oppressor.
Sarah's brother John Liberty has enlisted in the Union Army and I hope to god that he returns home safely. My biggest concern now is providing for my young family and my wife Sarah so I cannot afford to lose my job in the railroad and fight for either side.
Faithfully,
James Feeley
[[Outcome of the Civil War]]Dear Father,
I am writing to inform you that the Civil War has come to an end and the Union has emerged victorious. 140,000 Irishmen fought in the war for the Union Army. The men of the Irish Brigade showed the Americans that we Irish are loyal to the Union and are willing to pay our price in blood.
General Meaghers name will be placed in the history of this great nation for all men to see! We must now rebuild the nation and fix the problems of the South. The evil of slavery has been vanquished but we must continue building upon our good work.
Faithfully,
James Feeley

Furthermore, the Irish who fought in the Confederacy fought with equal valur and honour. Many Americans have been won over to the cause of the irish people because of our efforts in the war. Now we have to rebuild the nation and move forward. John Liberty came back alive and was welcomed as a hero.
Since I did not partake in the war I was able to continue working and I have been promoted to a skilled position. I could not become a tinner, blacksmith, or a boilermaker. Our children and Our Family will be in a much better position for the future.

The War has ended and the Union has emerged victorious. We are outnumbered by their armies but we were not outmanned. They had superior numbers and resources but our men fought bravely. We fought bravely at the First Balltie of Manassas and Robert E. Lee proved to be a gallant leader. Irish men like Patrick Cleburne demonstrated that we are a proud fighting race and earned the respect of Southerns and Northerners.
I was captured during the war and placed in Fort McHenry for being disloyal with some other Irishmen. We were kept in the fort and told that we may not vote once the war had ended.
I hope to gain employment on the railroad soon and see my wife Sarah.
Faithfully,
James Feeley

Many Irish men were present during the riot and became actively involved by choosing to <<choice "Join the mob.">>,<<choice "Aid Union Soldiers">>
or they choose to <<choice "Stay away">>.</font>
Dear Uncle,
Union soldiers came into our city armed and ready to turn their arms against our brothers. A mob surrounded the soldiers as they arrived in the train station and met them with disdain. I joined the crowd as we made our loyalty to Jefferson Davis and the right of the States known. Plenty of women decided to help aid the mob.
The soldiers quickly turned on the crowd and began firing on us. Many men were killed or arrested. I must [[Aid the Confederacy]]!
Lovingly,
Sarah FeeleyDear Uncle,
Riots broke out at Pratt Street this week as Union soldiers moved through the city. Virginia has secceded and the country is going to war. The soldiers were met by disloyal members of the population, who attacked them with stones and fired shots at the soldiers.
This unprovocated attacked led the officers to order the soldiers to fire on the crowd. The riot was brutal and the poor soldiers were injured. Me and some other girls tended to their wounds and helped nurse them back to help. My brother John are signing up for the Union army and I may help by becoming a
[[Underground Railroad]].
Your loving Niece,
Sarah FeeleyDear Uncle,
I witnessed a major riot in the city recently. The United States is in danger of falling apart. Virginia and other states have seceeded and war seems likely to break out. Lincolns men marched through Baltimore April 19 1861 and they were met with a mob of secessionist supporters. Many of the secessionists were Irishmen.
The mob threw stones and fired shots at the soldiers and the soldiers angered by their hostile reception in the city fired back.
The war has gotten our of hand and I have encouraged James to stay at home. He is an honorable man and he coudl fight in the war but our loyalities are with our growing family and I need him to provide for us while the war is ongoing. We have to look after our children and maintain our income. I will look after the children and James will continue at work. My brother John is fighting on the side of the union and I hope he return homes safely.
Lovingly,
Sarah Feeley
[[Outcome:]]Dear Uncle,
The war is taking its toll and as a woman I must help the Confederate cause in my own way. We help organise relief committees for the COnfederate soldiers who fought so bravely and I have been known to provide a free meal to confederate men.
I helped convince James that fighting in the war was the righteous path and he has gone to help General Lee and his men defeat the Yankees. Thousands of Irishmen have signed up to fight for the rights of the state and against the abolition of slavery. We know our cause is righteous and we will ensure that our men are remembered for their fight.
Your loving niece,
Sarah Feeley
[[Outcome]]Dear Uncle,
The War has ended and the Union has emerged victorious. OUr cause was righteous but we were outnumbered. Our men fought bravely against great odds. We fought bravely at the First Balltie of Manassas and Robert E. Lee proved to be a gallant leader. Irish men like Patrick Cleburne demonstrated that we are a proud fighting race and earned the respect of Southerns and Northerners.
James was captured during the war and placed in Fort McHenry for being disloyal with some other Irishmen. The lack of income affected our family badly as we fell on harsh times. It was a rich mans war but the poor man paid for it. The kids were worried for their father but I attempted to keep a brave face through it all. James has since been released and we hope to build our lives together. The memory of the honorable Confederate soldier will be passed on to our children.
Lovingly,
Sarah Feeley.

I am writing to inform you that the war is under way and that my brother John has joined the Union Army. James and I are keen to play are part in the war for our adopted land so I am actively helping raise money for soldiers and nurses in the war.
This city has a massive free black population and it is not uncommon for the colored people to be seen mingling with the Irish. We are using this opportunity to help them escape to a better life through pratt street. The Irish know oppression more than any other race in Europe and we must help others make their way to freedom.
Lovingly,
Sarah Feeley

We women did our part for the cause by aiding the soldiers as nurses, providing uniforms and other material for the men, and helping slaves escape to freedom. The Underground railroad in our area helped colored people make their way to a better life.
